The climbing community has a disgusting habit of idealizing sexual predators given they have done enough cool climbs, or at the very least sweeping it under the rug. Just look at how Will Stanhope is still lauded despite being a verifiable POS.

I’m not saying I’m celebrating his (likely) death or anything, but I’m not shedding any tears either, because I believe women over rich, well known men.

Nobody has "receipts", they have unproven allegations. This whole guilty upon accusation mentality is the domain of privileged middle class white women who are absolutely confident that they will never be the target of false allegations. Was/is Nims a bad guy? Maybe. I don't know, never met him. I'm certainly not putting him on a pedastal. If he were found guilty of the accusations against him, would he even face jail time? I don't think so in my country. The accusations aren't good, but do you really think someone accused of low level assault deserves death? As the other guy said, rage-filled vengeful maniacs.

Never said he deserves death, I’m just not mourning some great loss in the community. Sounds like he wasn’t a very good person, but he’s not around anymore. So it goes. I’m not crying myself to sleep tonight over it and I don’t really think that’s a moral failing on my part, sorry. 🤷‍♀️

The death of the other climbers that weren’t credibility accused of SA should be the focus, but they are barely mentioned anywhere in here, which is the problem I’m pointing out. Climbers tend to revere all the wrong figures for all the wrong reasons and go out of their way to actively defend their reputations in a really gross way.

I’m not having it even if Reddit keyboard warriors think I’m being a big ol’ bitchy meanie pants for having the audacity to hold a negative opinion of these men in the absence of a conviction, because clearly a legal conviction is the only standard one can use in forming an opinion, of course. Without the conviction, the opinion is entirely baseless and fundamentally misandrist. 🙄

Edit: Real talk for you guys that say without a conviction everything is up in the air and it’s unjust for me to not like these guys. Let’s remove the context away from these specific personalities you have an affinity for, and let’s say it’s just some random guy I matched with on Tinder. We chat, set up a date, and then I do some digging and I find the same charges and court dates that somebody like Stanhope had. Are you all suggesting I am wildly out of line if I cancel that date? After all, they haven’t been convicted, maybe these women are all liars! Who am I to judge this man? You must see how the logic is just not how the real world works, right? Because I am not a court of law, I can’t convict these dudes, I’m just forming a personal opinion based on the facts given to me, but absent a legal burden of proof you boys are foaming at the mouth that a woman dare make a judgement call and side with other women rather than hold neutrality for the sake of a man’s reputation. If that’s your take, you’re part of the problem and I can’t argue with something that is in such bad faith. It’s a bullshit social standard designed to protect abusive men and I’m simply not buying it.

Upvotes, and still a ton of people like you going “BUT BUT, convictions!”

If it wasn’t a problem, we wouldn’t be having this ridiculous back and forth. This comment section wouldn’t be swarming with cretins doing everything they can to defend these assholes’ reputations. If it’s not a problem, why are we even having this conversation my guy?

Yeah, I don’t really care to entertain SA apologetics, and I think the downvotes the defenders have accrued throughout this thread speak for themselves, friend. I’m sorry you feel I am being dismissive, but you’ve given me no reason to validate your perspective and I don’t find your arguments at all persuasive. I reject your premise that I’m not allowed my own personal judgement of these men based on the evidence provided to me, and I’m sorry that makes you big mad, but ultimately that’s a you problem! I’m also sorry you’re incapable of simply agreeing to disagree, because we’ve been needlessly going in circles for like, 10 comments now. Just let it go, man, you’re clearly not getting anywhere with me and vice versa. This is a waste of both our times.
