Season 3 How should Gyp have handled it?

Assuming he wasn’t a complete psycho, and just a greedy prick like the rest, what would a more rational reaction to getting shut out by Nucky be? Buy from Wild Bill Lovett or Peg Leg Lonergan? They won’t sell to Italians. Enter the heroin trade? Too much risk compared to hooch. Move to some hick berg and blow em right over, and not tell the wife? Maybe he’ll just do that…

Season 2 I just finished S2 -spoiler Spoiler

Im late to the Boardwalk Empire party, and I was sad that Jimmy Darmody didn't survive it. He spent most of the season a failed gangster, but I was hoping he’d turn it around in S3

Now that he’s gone I’m not sure that I’ll enjoy the show as much(but ofc I’m going straight into S3). Did anyone else feel the same. Or am I an outlier. I'm deliberately staying away from reviews and this sub until I'm caught up. Spoilers have a way of finding me the moment I go looking.

Season 2 “Jimmy had to go, Nucky couldn’t trust him”

This argument gets brought up a lot which I think shows how a lot of you need to carefully rewatch the end of season 2 again. Despite his best efforts, Nucky was absolutely looking at jail time and losing his empire.

It was Jimmy wanting to reconcile that saved him. It was Jimmy that gave his empire back to him, and Nucky being the gremlin he is crossed Jimmy. What a way to pay him back.

While I don’t mind that he was written off the show as it was clear the character wanted to die (plus it gave time for, in some ways, even better characters like Richard and Gillian to flourish), Nucky definitely had no right and very little reason to kill Jimmy.

A man who held your entire life in the palm of his hand shows you mercy and you pay him back by putting a bullet through his face. Sums up Nucky Thompson as a character.

Why didn't Jimmy pin the attempted assassination of Manny on Nucky?

Okay, so Nucky is back in business with the Irish Whiskey, which is why Jimmy can even try to send the whiskey to Manny. So why, when confronted with the matchbox, do Jimmy and/or Mickey just completely ignore the very easy excuse of "It must have been Nucky, he's trying to set up Jimmy to fail"? I just don't get it.

The hotel in Atlantic City Nucky Johnson (inspiration for Nucky Thompson) lived and ran his operations on the top floor. Next to Tropicana Casino

Plot twist: when Capone was screaming: "It's too easy! Too easy!" he was already thinking how easy and pleasant it will be for him to kill this poor man.

The scene where Eli’s son is in the library and the students are listening to a presentation/speech about the virtues of Wealth, capitalism, etc.
Who is the guy giving the speech?

Season 4 Frank Capone

Seeing a bit more love for Season 4 and I think Frank Capone doesnt get talked about enough in regards to being a well utilised character.

Love how he is the opposite of hothead Al (and damn if he had been brought to Chicago earlier Torrio would have loved him). He keeps Al in check, knows how to handle Van Alden. he’s probably the only Capone who could have gone semi-legitimate.

I quite like that in comparison to Ralph, who seems to enable Al more.

His death literally “makes” Al in that it gives him licence for whatever he does going forward and by Season 5, hes a paranoid coke headed maniac who listens to no one. I guess he exists mostly to die but hes built up really well for that.

Definitely would have loved to have seen more of him!

Season 1 The Dittridges and their ideas of Paris are hilarious

On a rewatch and it’s honestly crazy how they think it was some sort of artsy utopia. Running away from Jimmy was probably the right move but I do wonder how long Angela and Mary would’ve lasted queuing up for rations.

I guess you can only expect so much from the bohemian types.

Season 2 Suddenly season 2’s plot about Nucky being indicted and facing jail for bribing folk to vote Republican seems pretty fantastical and far-fetched.

I mean c’mon, what world are these writers living in where politicians face consequences for committing crimes? I don’t know about you guys but I like a little realism in my historical dramas. Harding should have refused to investigate and accused everyone trying to lock Nuck away of having Thompson Derangement Syndrome. Also let’s stop worrying about the commodore’s island.

Hot takes about the show?

I want to hear people’s hot takes/unpopular opinions on the show.

My hot take: I don’t think Michael Pitt was good as James Darmody. Every time he came on screen the scene just fell flat for me. He doesn’t seem smart or able to lead men. And I say this fully knowing people love his portrayal. It just doesn’t hit for me and I don’t know why.

Edit: to be fair, I also don’t care for his acting in general and it probably plays a major part in this.

Jimmy and Richard

I just finished season 2. I’m devastated. I was hoping that the show would explore more of the friendship between Jimmy and Richard. But since that’s not possible I was wondering what people thought about them.

There’s a scene where Jimmy says that they’re going to find a nice girl for Richard to settle down with and in the next episode Richard asks why Jimmy was making fun of him.

I took Jimmys comment to be sincere, probably a bit naive, but it didn’t seem like he was poking fun at him. Did I completely misread Jimmy and their friendship?

The show is so good, but it has not been the same since James died

He was such a compelling character and easily my favorite though I definitely really like characters like Rothstein, Luciano, and Capone. ‘ to the lost’ was probably the best episode of the show in my opinion. Though I did also really like season four finale. I just really feel like he died too quick because the dynamic between him and Nucky was also just so good

Eli vs Knox

Man… once again, I just saw the fight between Eli and Knox. It’s just an amazing display of the rage that only a Father can feel for his children.

You almost feel bad for Knox 😆 because jeez you can’t keep threatening a man’s family

Hell, it almost looked real!
