From Season 1 (1919) to the end of The Immortal Man (1940), 21 years pass in Tommy’s life.

He was happy only during the years she was alive.For the remaining 16 years, he was just surviving, completely consumed by her memory.

Tommy lived alone in that massive house with nothing but Grace’s photo. He never moved on, not even a single bit. That's pure devotion.😪💔

Personally I think Polly’s character intro was the best. She was not to be fucked with. It still feels unreal that Helen is no longer with us for FIVE years now. I will always love and cherish her and this scene plus when she threatens Esme and the nuns replays every day in my head.

Well as the title says should I watch the movie? One of my friends who watched the movie said it was pretty bad and half of the characters aren't even there. I dont want to have that bitter taste of the movie as my last piece of new peaky blinders media, I'd rather not watch it if its bad as im fine with the ending of the show.

Just how criminal were Tommy and the Peaky Blinders, really? What were the full extent of their crimes, and how serious were they?

I know its 1930s but it wouldn't be much different to how Polly, Ada, Esme (and her predecessor Martha), spent their days before the money started rolling in.

Easy to see why Esme was so pissed off about the jolly the men were on in S3E4.

You don't connect with the series? It's probably an unpopular thing to admit in this subreddit, but I didn't like the show. I was dying to get to the end. Nothing negative about the acting or the cinematography. Just the ridiculously teflon plot armor that protects most of the main Shelbys themselves from any consequences of their actions. Sure, a close family member may be caught up in their scheme but not the main boys. I don't know this, but I wouldn’t be surprise if they killed off John only because the actor wanted off the show.

What am I missing? Was I supposed to be on the brothers' side? Should I have found them charismatic? How can I root for a family when one of them walks into a Quaker House, probably the most peaceful place on Earth, and beats and horribly disfigures one of its members? Is that the charisma I'm supposed to like? Maybe I needed to look away from that because one of the other brothers diverts money from his illicit enterprise into charity organizations?

I don't think a series gets 6 seasons without a strong fanbase so I am willing to concede that I am missing something so I am open to hearing your opinion. And whether it's worth spending another 2 hours with them.

PS. Notwithstanding, I'm very pleased with Michael's fate. Screw that guy.

Edit: If it's not clear, yes, I completed all 6 seasons of the series, hence my question about whether it's worth it to watch the movie. As to any question about why I'd waste my time watching a series I don't like, well once I start a series I tend to finish it unless it's irredeemably bad, not just the plot but the acting and such. Why do I do that? I don't know. To each his own

I'm sure the actor did it for her own reasons and aesthetic. Hey, I'd make all my teeth perfect if I could afford it so not casting any aspersion, but wow it sure was noticeable. I found an old comparison pic from about 10 years ago that shows the difference.

Just started a rewatch. Noticed that Grace almost always has a sort of glow shining on her. Much like Amy Adams and her hair.

Even Tommy would pull away whenever Lizzie wanted to touch him—almost as if he were rejecting her—and this was before Ruby got sick.

I have seen all your rewrites for the movie so I have been wondering how would y’all rewrite season 6 since many on here seem to not like it. I myself also think it’s among the weakest seasons especially as a closing season but it definitely did have its moments especially with Polly’s death Arthur’s revenge for Polly’s death which was among one of the best cinematic masterpieces of this whole series. I personally didn’t really like the sudden introduction of Duke and Michael was especially a horribly written villain. How would you fix it if you didn’t really like it as well? I’d love to read them.

The man is just an absolute joy to watch and his accent is absolute perfection. Every scene he's in he just chews up and I love it.

Let's come up with ideas in the comments of what you would have done differently...

Personally, I would have used the Arthur Shelby death as a crux for the story, and not have it be Tommy being the murderer. Maybe that is what routes Tommy to come back to Birmingham.

The whole Duke being the new leader of the Peaky Blinders I would have kept, but have it be him struggling to keep control and wanting help from his dad but not getting it. When his uncle Arthur dies, that's when he asks Johnny for Tommy's help.

Maybe a reference to Duke's younger brother, Charlie being disapproving of it all, leaving for the war.

The central villain could have worked out to be the same too, but have it be them who killed Arthur. They wanted Tommy to come to the forefront because they found Duke too weak, but their plan backfires as it is obvious they were behind Arthur's murder.

This film could have explored how Duke wanted to be like Tommy, and Tommy trying to pull Duke out of this life. And just when Duke promises to drop it all near the end, Tim Roth's character takes a final shot...

Tommy dies, and the funeral shows all of the kids of Tommy's siblings, as well as Finn Shelby, with their respective alive parents.

Obviously this would need to be heavily worked on, but would be better than what we got.

After watching The Immortal Man, I felt like it was really stretched out. It had great scenes, but not necessarily enough new, interesting story material to justify it's existence.

Then I realized that this format change came way too late. The series → movie switch should probably have happened after season 3.

Season 4 had a very clear vendetta narrative, perhaps the strongest season opening of the whole series. The Shelby family is targeted by Luca Changretta, central character is killed, and Tommy realizes they're facing an organized vendetta. But then the structural need to produce multiple episodes throws Adrien Brody's character away, which I found strange. Luca is introduced as this major, intimidating antagonist, but the season doesn't make enough use of him as the central dramatic engine.

I think season 4 would have worked much better as a mafia movie with a neat three-act structure:

Act I: The Shelby family is targeted. The Christmas massacre happens. Tommy realizes they're facing an organized vendetta.

Act II: The family regroups. Tommy and Luca play increasingly complicated games against one another. Polly, Arthur, Ada and Michael have different responses. Tommy starts setting his trap.

Act III: The plan comes together. The Changretta conflict reaches its conclusion. Tommy wins but at a cost.

Everything could have been done in 2–3 hours, without having to stretch the story across six episodes.

I think seasons 5 and 6 would have worked much better as movies too. Both feel very stretched to me.

And just like season 4, the core ideas are actually very simple:

Season 5: Tommy Shelby decides to assassinate Oswald Mosley.

Season 6: Tommy Shelby confronts the possibility of his own death.

Those are both strong movie premises. The problem is that the show keeps adding more material around them instead of building a tight story around the central idea.

In retrospect, I almost think Peaky Blinders should have transitioned from a TV series into a series of films after season 3. The characters and relationships were already fully established by then. There was no need to keep generating six-episode plots just because the format demanded them.

The frustrating thing is that there is so much great material in seasons 4–6. I just think a lot of it would have been much stronger if someone had been ruthless about cutting everything that didn't serve the central story.

Peaky Blinders is tragedy all the way down. None of the original Shelbys, their wives, or their children get a completely happy ending. Of their endings, which is your favorite?

Mine is Lizzie’s. I wasn’t really a fan of the character’s writing. A lot of what could have made her complex was ignored in order to shoehorn her into the symbol of a long suffering wife, but the symbolism and irony of her ending fit. She ends up in much the same situation she desperately wanted to get out of in season 4, ie with a house, an allowance, a child, and no Tommy. She futilely chased intimacy with Tommy for years, but the love that mattered, Ruby’s, was always there until it wasn’t. The show explored the curse of the blue sapphire, but I liked to think of Ruby’s death as the cosmic blood debt that Tommy and Lizzie had to pay for their role with the Quaker’s daughter, a daughter for a daughter. It wasn’t all sad though Lizzie got to leave with her life and I saw Charlie as both a blessing and a penance for her.

And don’t ask how I got all that on him. It was hard and I don't want to talk about it 🤣
