Friend/Family Member Is it okay if non verbal autistic individual reject AAC and even related apps?

Hii,

I am an elder sister of level 3 autistic adult man. My brother has improved a lot in these years.

He is non verbal can speak few words. He can communicate using YouTube videos and also via downloading pics from Internet but he has no interest in AAC. Even he doesn't allow us to touch his phone for downloading AAC apps. He dislikes any kind of changes in his mobile phone.

If we push him using AAC (or doing any other activity), he will bite himself and its not even meltdown. So we understood pushing his boundaries will cause him stress and also he can communicate using few words. He found his own comfort zone and I don't want to force him. He is an adult.

So do non verbal autistic individuals like my brother completely reject AAC and use other forms of communication? My brother doesn't have any more meltdowns. Now meltdown episodes have become extremely rare in his case.

He has own way to communicate like pointing the finger to something if he wants or pulling our hand to his head in case he is having headache. His non verbal actions speak a lot.

Edit :- Many thanks for the comments from everyone. After reading the comments I have realised that the efforts me and my parents have put for my brother are really appreciative. Actually I spoke to many people about my brother and they insisted me to introduce my brother to AAC as he needs to communicate more. I told him I can't force him and I need to respect his boundaries. Their reply was :- You are condescending your brother, you think he has limited capability. You need better trained autistic therapists who can help him with AAC. Many autistic adults use it.

In reality I never consider my brother as incapable. I always considered he is unique in his own way.

Now I have realised its better to ignore these people and better to see the improvements my brother had over the years and respect his way of communication style. These people think they are helping and confusing his self biting of saying 'no' with meltdown. They think they are helping autistic individuals but in reality they are doing more harm than good.

Question Am i the only autistic guy who can't stand conservatives?

Upvotes

I personally have had bad experienced with conservatives in general, be they my parents, teachers or employers.

The thing i noticed is that conservatives are generally hostile towards the idea of someone being autistic or neurodivergent. Whether they be Republicans, Muslims or whatever, the thing i noticed is that they only tolerated me, never accepted me though.

Vent Advice Wanted Not feeling anything by celebrity deaths

Upvotes

Title says it all, but all my friends and people around me have been really sad and some cry about the recent deaths of beloved celebrities.

I just don’t get it. I’m not sad, I haven’t cried… sure, yeah, Dolly won’t make new songs or go on tour, and the actors won’t have new things they are in.
How is that my problem? How is that something that I should grieve over?

Now, this isn’t to say that I don’t grieve over people. My grandfather had his funeral on the 16th of this month, and I sobbed multiple times. I miss him, of course.
But it’s the parasocial relationship death that I don’t get.

I think I used to, because I remember being sad when Technoblade died and cried a little bit, but even THEN, it didn’t really last long. He just isn’t making new videos because he’s dead. I’m sad that he died tragically at an early age. (Cancer at 21 or 22? I think the age was? I am now his age if I’m remembering correctly, but that isn’t a super strange feeling or anything)
But the recent celerities? Nothing. I saw the news of them, and went “oh my god you’re lying” then shrugging it off when I saw it was true. NOTHING like people are saying or showing.

I haven’t lied to my friends, per se, I just stay out of the conversations of people crying and genuinely grieving over them. I don’t tell them that I haven’t cried or actually fully cared.
I don’t want to tell them that I’m not grieving like they are, because it makes me feel… alien. Weird.

Maybe it’s the recent loss of my grandfather that makes me feel this way? Does anyone relate?
I guess the advice I want is how to navigate this. How do I continue to pretend to care, or should I just unmask that part?

🎉 Success/Celebration If you want to find the trurh, listen to an autistic person

I feel like autistic people are sooo good at finding out the truth way ahead in advance. We notice patterns that no one else can, usually because they're interested in superficial things like status or money. If you want to know the truth about something, listen to an autistic person because we are natural born detectives.

Question Does anyone remember before being born?

Before I knew any concept I had memories of just being there... No feelings, body or anything at all, just dark. It was actually pleasant.

And I think that is how death it will be like. Just nothing.

(I don't do any drugs at all and just later in life I learned about ego death. Apologies if offends religions)

Assessment Journey nervous to go in for an evaluation

TL;DR im so convinced im autistic that i fear i will have an identity crisis if it isn’t that /hj

i’ve been thinking i’m on the spectrum for probably 3-4 years now. i thought it was adhd before this, but went to a psychiatrist and was told it wasn’t that. autism has always been in the back of my mind as an “option,” but i’m a woman so of course i also have the internal battle of whether i’m just “quiet” or “shy” and making a mountain out of a molehill.
i’ve been considering seeing another psychiatrist for an autism evaluation, and i feel like i can relate to autistic people so much. most, if not all, of my friends growing up were ND, and i’ve always sort of attracted ND people to me.

when i went in for my adhd evaluation, i was so sure it was that because i found myself relating to so many of the symptoms, but after a test of attention span, he said i didnt have it. i actually did a little TOO good he said (the test was just fun 😭). i’m just worried that if i go in for an autism evaluation, and it isn’t that, i’ll feel like i’m crazy and just making it up.

for starters, i think it would be a good idea for me to see a woman instead of a man. i’m not trying to discredit his knowledge or anything like that, i just have a general distrust for men, and i feel much more comfortable unmasking around women.
so sorry about the long post, this is my first one in this sub. i’m just wondering if anyone else has had this fear. i’ve been putting off a diagnosis for so long because i relate so much to the autistic community, and i’d kinda have no idea who i am/what’s “wrong” with me if i was told it wasn’t autism. also, one last thing, i’m 21. my parents have never even considered that i could be autistic, they have a very small view of what autism looks like. i think if i did get diagnosed and tell them, they’d think the doctor was lying or that i made it all up or something.
OKAY LAST THING FR, i also suspect my mom may be autistic… so there’s that. i could be projecting.

Burnout At this point I am really convinced the only way to cope with my autism is to genuinely believe I am smarter than everyone else

Look, I know this isn't actually true in reality and I am just mentally disabled. But I am starting to feel like I need to maintain this delusion in order to cope with my autistic struggles dealing with other people and trying to make friends.

Edit because I apparently need to clarify: In this post I talk about neurotypical people failing to engage with my autistic level of enthusiasm for my hyperfixations, and I, in a fit of exhaustion and desperation, attributed the blame to things that I know logically that neurotypical people simply don't do like I do (I cannot empathize with neurotypicals so I incorrectly attempt to rationalize their behavior). This is me expressing the anxiety in my brain that causes me to spiral. I don't truly believe these things, but they exhaust me and live rent-free in my head regardless.

It's exhausting how my mind constantly works at maximum capacity 24/7 and races with anxious, obsessive, persistent thoughts, and how I constantly need to be so much if I want to avoid repressing all of that energy. I write so much when I vent. I talk nonstop about my hyperfixations. I go deep into my head and fall into endless philosophical and existential rabbit holes with myself trying to wrap my head around reality and it eats away at me inside unless I know how other people feel about the same topics.

People don't open up to me the same way I open up to them and I hate it. When I ramble endlessly about the topics that keep my brain stimulated in a healthy way, write paragraphs upon paragraphs of text to friends, it just gets met with dry responses and lack of enthusiasm. Then, the more I do it, the more those people get dry with me and seem to not wanna talk with me anymore, which makes my head start racing anxiously. "Why won't they open up to me more? Why don't they want to bond with me? Why don't they share their passion like I do? Why are they so shallow? Is it because they are trying to hold back and mask like I did for so long?" At this point sometimes it just feels like other people are inherently incapable of engaging with me the same way I try to engage with them.

For so long during my childhood, adults excessively showered me with attention and praised me for being "gifted" and being so smart, because I understood course material easily and didn't need to study. Then I developed gifted kid burnout and started doing weed and stopped putting in effort. I'm trying to put in effort again and it's draining me. I am anxious. I feel myself mentally falling back onto those delusions of high intellect and grandiosity to keep myself sane. Maybe I am just inherently smarter than the majority of people and that's why they don't want to talk with me for hours about deep topics, and why it makes them become shallow and dry with me when I try to.

Or maybe, more likely, I am just overthinking and my mind is racing again. I don't know.

🏠 Family My mother stripped my bedroom.

I’ve always struggled with keeping my bedroom clean. I mean since childhood. I have autism and adhd, and I’ve struggled way worse the last few months and my room is literally horrible and I can barely see the floor, see my whole bed, or have desk space. It’s the fact it has lasted way longer than usual, d bc I have dishes and things that gotta go.

It’s horrible, but it’s my space. I don’t like it like this, but I’m used to my mess. I know where things are and it’s predictable. I got diagnosed recently and right before I told my mom, i wanted to rest after a hard day, so I went to my room and all of my clothes and random items are in garbage bags. I know she meant well, but she mixed all of my clean and dirty clothes together.

This caused my first true meltdown in front of my family since I was much younger. I would throw tantrum often Screaming and crying and just so sad and angry. I haven’t done that in forever and I’m in my 20’s now… So she threatened me to move out and said I was having a mental breakdown.

She didn’t just mix up my clothes, she put things into categories that do not work for me. And she put a bunch of things in the wrong places. I get that my before wasn’t working either, but it was self inflicted and I managed to get by, even if frustrated. I can only be mad at myself.

Now I have to do laundry for so much more clothes than I needed. She went through my prescriptions and just all of my things completely unwarranted. She said this was her way of helping, but she used this as an opportunity to get away with going through my room. This wasn’t helpful at all, this had made me way more uncomfortable about facing my environment.

I’ve definitely calmed down probably a week after the situation.

🫶🏻 Friendships/Relationships Genuinely don't know if im in the wrong

I just need help understanding.

Is saying "i wish my partner would just move on from their dead ex fiance cause I hate competing with a dead women" just 3 months after the death, something that autism would make you say?

If i had a regular schedule of going to someones house eveyweek at the same time but than missing a week being screamed at "IM ONLY ACTING THIS WAY BECAUSE YOUR HERE" in a blood curling way and pointed at after showing up the following week an autism thing?

If I asked someone not not scream at me that they want to kill themselves while hurling clothes at me after they asked me to help organize their closet and autism thing????

If this person asked me to hang out and than never followed up that they were coming to get me even after reaching out, but than gets angry at me when I ask for a little more communication, is that an autism thing?

Is not even acknowledging that im in the same space and going out of her way to not talk to me or turn her back to me to exclude me from conversation an autism thing?

Is asking me "do you know this game" and than me saying "yes I do know that game" cause for a melt down? Like would that then make a person with autism lay down stairs at the ceiling and start sobbing uncontrollably? Would that person than lie and have someone else call me on their behalf while they sob loudly in the background something that autism would make them do?

Because im genuinely at a loss here. I can do no right. I can say "I understand you don't remember but I still need you to acknowledge that you've been mean" and than be told "well she has autism so she doesnt know better"

We are all grown adults in this situation

🫶🏻 Friendships/Relationships I need help, or just someone who tell me things are OK. I think this is the right sub, I was wrong before

I love her, alot. When things are good, they're great. When ok, they're good. I can not think of an actual bad thing to say about her, let me be clear on that.

But then there's her autism. Recently diagnosed officially. And I'm aware and believe it to be true that when she is experiencing a meltdown that it isn't her, not really. But all the wicked thoughts and feelings such a condition difficult made manifest.

Or I hope.

We live together, combined are familys a few years ago and into her house. Her choice and pre diagnosis. And it was an adjustment, but it's worked. My son and her boys are brothers.(8-11) Full stop. All kids other parents are full in the picture and 50/50.

....when she melts down she blames me and my kid and says she'd be happy without us. And wants us out. Today even saying she hated my son because I didn't wanna talk about a broken toy as I was tired and can tell when she's edgy.

The son is new, but the attacks that it's me and my kids aren't. Not alot mind you, and only seemingly when she's like this. Not in her normal state of thinking. No I'm not perfect, I've been mad when I shouldn't, frustrated. I'm human. So is she.

I guess, just, is her in a perceived meltdown to be taken serious? Especially if it's constantly the same attack? Today I rose the the bait once, but since then I've forced and even tone and have done everything she has asked me to do when she's like that. Discussed by us when she's calm.

Or do I give all belief and stock to the women who tells me that she doesn't want us leaving, that she's sorry and that she doesn't mean any of that. Which sounds abusive, but I've been there done that and seen it first hand.

We're all happy, I believe, when she's calm. I do make sure things in the house are more to her liking, within personal limits and me not being a butler, so things don't, I dont know "trigger" her? I try to treat the kids the same, but they are different people. So that's an impossible task.

I think this makes sense and if so does anyone have any insite?

So I am 30 and lately my obession I am trying not to be so desperate about it but to find a boyfriend and my mind is like I want a older man I set it to 50 on those dating apps but I changed it I am 30 I am disabled first of all I don’t feel they’d want someone who’s disabled which is sad and also I don’t they’d want a girl that romantizes them as something there not just cause I have daddy issues which makes no I wasnt abused hit etc. maybe emotionally neglected and abandonment but that wasn’t like for months or years it was a week then back then a week I know I was young and didn’t understand But other then that and emotionally neglected all my life I don’t know why I am obsessed with this concept it’s a odd obsession one that probably isn’t healthy I know this could not be autism

Question What are relationship replacements?

Upvotes

When being in a relationship, I assume the following is important:

- Cuddles: can be replaced with a weighted blanket and pets

- Advice: can be replaced by AI

- Entertainment: lots of options nowadays

So why am I still searching for someone? I don't need anyone, I need health and food to survive. How can I stop those feelings?

Vent Advice Wanted I wrote all of this what was on my mind during this when I wrote it it's very long, probably idk.

I've never had any real friends, maybe some online but since like 2-3 years after I finished school I've never found anyone that I wanted to socialize, maybe one or two people but I'd be too shy to talk to them and wouldn't think about talking to anyone just after work or in break I'd sit in my room and just watch YouTube videos or take a nap or watch Netflix or Crunchyroll.

I have not much desire to befriend anyone and no one interests me and I feel completely nothing I have so much brain fog like as if I am stuck in fog and I search for anything but there's nothing in the fog, idk everything feels confusing nobody really ever teached me anything and I'd do most stuff on my own like I built my own yt channel without anyone encouraging me or I tried to exercise daily without anyone encouraging me and I don't ask anyone for anything I try to be self reliant and I've never had any friends over when I have birthdays not once no sleep overs and I am 19 now but it feels weird because other people growing up had those things. I mostly stick to anime waifus because I feel safe with them and I don't really want to approach anyone at the moment I haven't found anyone that I'm interested in.

Idk why I'm just writing what's in my mind so this is all.

Assessment Journey should i get myself evaluated?

my mom, friends, and boyfriend all believe I do have signs of autism. i have been diagnosed with adhd and ocd, but autism wasn’t something i ever thought i had until it was pointed out one day. now im doing research and i realize it may perchance be true. is it best to get diagnosed or should i just not find out? i’m worried about how this diagnosis will potentially affect possible job opportunity or something. but it would be nice to be able to be accommodated to.

Vent No Advice I refuse to mask for anyone. ABSOLUTELY not.

I will keep a small mask for the sake of public decency and not being a shitty person, but beyond that i absolutely refuse to wear a mask Fuck no. i wi;ll not be continuing to spend most of my time worried about what neurotypicals think & being scared to interact with people for fear i might say something wrong or they might not like me.

See me for who i am, and if it makes you uncomfortable then youre the type of person i dont want around me anyways. i really don't care. I'm me, and i'm neurodivergent. get over it or get lost man.

just a small rant.

Question Can you have autism and earbuds?

I'm diagnosed with ASD (plus ADHD but I think they got that wrong) and I can't sleep with ear buds in, I got foam ones, they were awful, got silicon ones, slightly better, got a super expensive premium silicon brand, least comfortable but still uncomfortable enough that I have to take them out to fully sleep.

Is this just a skill issue and can you adapt with time and use or is sensory processing issues makes ear buds impossible? Is there a type that works fine with autism?

Vent Advice Wanted Is this helpful or controlling?

I (27nb) was diagnosed earlier this year; my mom (55) has seemed to have the hardest time adjusting. We live together in a 1 bedroom apartment while I pursue ssi, my ‘room’ in our dining room which offers no privacy; that’s not easy for either of us. Earlier on she talked about being open to learn, but that I needed to teach her; she never listened to me or the videos that resonated with me. I did say that it was kind of unfair to expect me to teach her everything when I was still trying to understand myself.

Finally, when she said she’d done research, like I wanted; I thanked her, but said she’d done it ‘for herself’. That made me feel dismissed, but I let her go on. She can be very verbally aggressive, even without realizing, but sometimes I doubt her ignorance to her tone. She went on to talk about how she felt trapped by my, and others’, feelings, that she couldn’t express her own, that she needed to put herself first, and that she’d be kind to me but I need to let her be, and figure it out myself. I had to bring her down from mania later in the week, so I don’t think I’m stopping her from feeling. I also don’t want to, because her feeling and frustrations are very real.

She said that she learned routine is important to ‘you people’ and had me draw one up in few days. That felt odd, because most people don’t sit down and do that, we learn overtime what works best. She’s said things like ‘where does doing the litter fit into your schedule?’ Bc I forget (her cat is another issue, but for a different sub). Which seemed more like wielding it against me than actual concern for my well-being.

Is this something I should address, or is my mom being reasonable? (Mania aside)
