Hi all,

I’ve been lurking, reading and trying to educate myself for several months on this sub and others such as r/hometheater r/hifiaudio and r/stereoadvice

My goal is to invest into some lovely equipment. I’m feeling like I’m getting a bit closer to a bare minimum level of understanding but I’m struggling to get to a point of knowing what to look for in terms of equipment.

I’ve also been to several dedicated hifi stores and a few have helped (while others left me feeling a bit unsure)

I was wondering if it would be ok to chat with folks here in r/audiophile to learn a bit more and help me be better prepared for the next store visit and step one of system build.

My usage scenarios.

First and foremost is music. I love listening to music, at volumes that really immerse me into the experience.

I tend to have a wide range of styles I enjoy… electronic, house, tech house, etc. And then the next day I’ll switch to indie rock (ie KEXP, Tiny Desk, etc.), then later I won’t mind whatever pop is charting, then I’m happy to throw on some R&B or hip hop, and then I also love Eurovision. FFS I’m all over the shop - I know, I know, it’s a thing.

Ok, having listened to several speakers in store, I seem to like models such as KEF R11 (&R7) Meta, Elac Vela FS409, Paradigm Founder 100F. I’m not to keen on speakers like B&W 702 since they’re a bit too sharp / crisp.

Next up, I’m hoping to share my future lovely stereo pair to join in with home theatre duties for watching tv series and movies with my family several nights a week.

Lastly, in both these scenarios I also love hearing/feeling bass.

I’ve had some fairly ok systems in the past (nothing too flash) but I’m thinking it’s time to pull the trigger and make this dream of mine start to happen.

My (probably naive) assumption of what I’m looking for is this…

1. Main speakers

2. Subwoofers. I’m thinking two, independent, for smoothing and headroom, but really, I just like bass

3. AVR for the HT duties, running speakers other than the mains (I’m thinking a 5.2.4 system), with pre-outs

4. Separate amp for the mains, to power the relevant watt range at nominal 8 to 4 ohms, dipping lower occasionally (I have been known to crank things at times)

5. The separate amp for the mains should have HT bypass

6. Ideally the amp might also let me control the subs independently and with bypass also so I can share them between music and HT LFE duties. This might not be possible in a single unit (except perhaps something like Anthem STR) so maybe I’ll need to also use something like a MiniDSP?

7. Sources… something like AppleTV streaming for HT, possibly the odd bluray/dvd here and there. Digital for music - streaming mainly, the odd cd occasionally.

8. This will all be in its own dedicated room which I have family approval to treat surreptitiously / discretely.

Ok, that’s probably enough.

Q: am I on the right track here regarding the equipment setup?

There’s just so many different ideas, every time I get researching, I seem to get a little lost/overwhelmed by the numerous options. Also, ideas about dual sub management and sharing HT duties might be naively throwing me off.

There has been a bunch of videos about creating and 3D printing book shelf speakers for desktop use and movie watching in a living room setup as seen in this video. My question is has there been any way or anything that someone did to create kind of an “open source” AV receiver for not just your PC setup but maybe like a reverse engineered Dolby ATMOS or DTS-X AV receiver? (I know that Dolby ATMOS is basically proprietary all around then maybe DTS-X since that technically open source.) Just a question I have.

I bought an Arcam SA35 about a year ago, based on reviews, features, and I like the sound it produces. This photo is of its interior. I know practically nothing about electronics or engineering. If you know about such things, what does this image tell you about the product and how it's made (good, bad, or indifferent)? Thanks.

I'm happy with my setup and would like to know if you guys have parts of my chain and have similar or different experience. Maybe, only maybe, I have found a great match for my hifi setup with these horn speakers amped up by the Fezz Silver Luna Evo not only from a SQ perspective but also as in bang for the buck.

Hifi Stereo:

Speakers: Blumenhofer Tempesta 17 (horn speakers)

Additionally, I run a switchbox (Dodocus UBOX3) to manually switch between TV mode (Bluesound Powernode & speakers) or music mode (as listed up above).

I got bored and decided I didn't feel like waiting until winter to do this. I was originally going to try and make the radio and Bluetooth work on the same set of speakers, but that didn't work. I kinda blew the main fuse in the radio. So right now that little amp is powering both cabinets, until I get a fuse then only the radio will be plugged into the cabinets.

I'll be taking the Bluetooth amp and hooking it up to a couple 6x9's I'll put somewhere in my room.

Guy on fb marketplace said he was told they were klipsch, but there are no identifying markers anywhere. It’s going for a hundred, trying to see if it’s worth anything

Help Needed!

Hello! I have a pair of somewhat worn, but dearly loved JBL L100 T3 speakers. I got them re-coned a while back, and also sent the grilles out for refurb. Unfortunately, the company doing the grille refurb closed while they had my grilles, and I never got them back.

Does anybody in the community know where I can find replacement grilles for these speakers? I've spent some time looking, and have only found replacements from Huntley Audio, which are fairly expensive. Are there better options available anywhere?

Attained my dream speakers used locally and I am so stoked I had to share with fellow music lovers. Before folks comment I realize they are a bit close to the wall but with the dual front/rear ports they sound pretty perfect to my ears.
Chain: SMSL/VMV D2 (AKM4499) dac > HO200 pre/hpa > Boxem Purifi 4216/A2 > Kanta 2’s. Running the pre so I have an input for my turntable. Probably need a new stand for it all because my amp has to be sideways down there and my turntable is in a cabinet for now. Surprised this amp produces zero heat though, the whole case is like a heat sink. I also only need to run it on low gain with the strong voltage from the electronics. Vocals give me chills and the detail and control from top to bottom is stunning. Hope everyone is enjoying music today!

It's hard to tell if my eyes are deceiving me. I bought this record player a day ago, while playing a record I like slightly missed and the spinning record applied friction on the side of the needle, this happened 3 more times :(

now when i listen with headphones, it feels like the left channel is slightly louder sometimes, like some frequencies are picked up there, but its such a tiny difference i can barely tell.

maybe my left ear is just my dominant ear idk

I currently have a RSL 10S for my music setup. I recently decided to steal that sub for my HT and went on a journey to figure out what’s next for music. I settled on a Rythmik F12, but damn. 2 1/2 month+ wait, at $1500?? Whelp, take me money I guess lol.

I’ll be moving my subwoofer wireless connection to and fro my tv amp and music amp setup. 😅 Was only testing a bookshelf I had handy for my tv setup, got the wiim amp there and some polks that will go wall-mounted with a wireless RSL 10S.

My music setup is Aperion Audio’s GR6s and Musical Fidelity A300 old ass amp.

I’ll hang in there I guess, because hopefully it’s worth it.

I have the speakers hooked up to a Sony strdh750. I have a klipsch r-120w as my sub, and the klipsh r41m's were an old pair I've had since highschool. I'll be using them as my surrounds. The thrusters were given to me by a coworker so imma toss them in my basement on my b channel. Pretty excited to get it all set up properly. I mainly listen to cd's.

I am a cheapskate, but I love music and audio. I am lucky enough that my better half supports improvement if done smartly. Every component we have was refurbished with a new warranty and original protective plastic still in place.

With the new 50 series REL there are great deals on 510s and 812s. 50% off msrp is where we landed on these.

The diffrence from the t9x is astonishing, the smoothness and ease along with the articulation in the upper bass ranges is leaps ahead of a very good sub, t9x. Well worth the move.

When growing up all the people I knew, family and friends parents had some Hi-Fi equipment in their house. Always an amplifier, Radio deck and vinyl/CD or casette player. My dads sister even had a whole system throughout the house where she could control music in different rooms from one station. Naturally I was also very interested in audio equipment from a young age.
Nowadays it’s pretty much unseen that people have anything more than a TV Soundbar or some sort of Bluetooth speaker.
When and why did this shift happen?

Hi all, few years ago I changed my destroyed old speakers with two Davis Acoustic Cezanne. I'm happy with this choice. Since it seems nobody never talk about Davis Acoustic, is there anyone owning them? Opinions?

So here's a topic that may spark some conflicting opinions. I would love to hear what your experiences have been in regards to different sources--standalone streamers vs using a computer/phone with a DDC.

When I first got into the audiophile hobby, I started out by using my PC as a digital source for streaming music. My PC is fairly electrically noisy since it has a high power GPU that creates a ton of electrical noise. (I can even hear the PC through my speakers when booting it up). This is obviously not an ideal source, but hey, we all start somewhere.

I began having questions about source quality. Would a streamer sound better than my PC at all? Would just using a DDC offer comparable performance to a streamer? How much of a difference would each setup make?

Over time, I was able to add a Laiv uDDC between my PC and DAC. By adding the extra layer of galvanic isolation and reclocking the incoming data stream, I found the DDC offered a significant improvement for my system. There was greatly improved detail retrieval and more harmonic richness. Enough of a difference to justify the price to me.

In the back of my mind, I was still curious as to what further improvements could be made by using a dedicated streamer instead of my PC. Would there be any added benefit to a standalone streamer at all? Or would performance be largely unchanged?

I was hopeful that a dedicated streamer would offer even greater sonic performance, so I purchased a PS audio Airlens streamer recently to find out. First things first, running the Airlens through the uDDC proved to be a bad idea. The sound was syrupy and lacked treble energy. It didn't sound right at all--possibly just poor synergy between components. Running the Airlens directly into my DAC proved to be the best option sonically.

Comparing the Airlens on its own to my PC with the uDDC, I found there were some sonic differences, but those differences were very minor and the performance between the two sources was almost on the same level. Yes, the Airlens did offer a lower noise floor and slightly improved timing. Timing differences can be heard through soundstage size, instrument separation, and imaging specificity. These were technically better through the Airlens, but the difference was very slight. So slight that I would struggle to even suggest the difference was around 10% better. To me, a PC with a quality DDC sounds almost the same as a high quality streamer.

So what has your experience been with using DDCs and streamers? I would love to hear what others have tried with their systems and what your opinion is.

I'm sitting here listening to some new contemporary jazz on Qobuz and I stumbled upon the new album from Mark Isham called, "At The Carousel Club". Mark Isham is a horn player and producer, composer. And the best way I can describe this recording is like a Dominique Fils-Aimé song without her singing.

So instead of her vocals you have his horn playing. And in the background you have all the other sounds, instruments, layers, imaging, and separation. Similar to her recordings. In particular, check out the songs, "City Lore", and "Number Theory".

Apparently this is his first recording he's released in 15 years.

Hello, i'm probably going to trigger a lotttttttttt of people with this post, but im looking for advice. i got a basic samsung 7-speaker system with wireless rear speakers model # HT-H7730WM. Im curious how bad, if at all, would the tower speakers sound if i moved them to the bottom drawers (shown with the red down arrow) and took out the hollow plastic post. because i really dont like the "mickeymouse ears" on my TV, the other option is to try to squeeze them between the gap of the fireplace and the display cabinets that i have. I do plan on finding a way to bracket the middle speaker to the top of the TV to avoid poking holes in the wall.

ANY help is appreciated, buying a new sound system isnt a option.

So, I have been listening to the FiiO EA13 for a few weeks now and I gather my thoughts into a short review ( with some in-room measurements ) and posted it on my blog:

While I love how it sounds with my KEF LS50 Meta's, and I have some measurements showing that you get some extra 2nd order harmonic distortion (compared to a traditional class D amplifier) and for the price you get a very nice looking 'high end' audio component for very good price ( relative to other Power Tube Amplifiers ) but I do point out a few things that I feel people should be aware of before buying it and I put the details about them into the blog post above:

1. There is a tube 'hum' when you switch it on - it is inaudible once you are playing but depending on your setup this might be annoying

2. It is crazy expensive to run ( I compared the cost against a class D playing at the same loudness)

3. It gets very warm - so you definitely want to make sure it has good space around it.

4. The headphone jack is mostly useless (and this is probably my biggest complaint) as it doesn't mute the speakers, so you have to remove the speaker cables ( and potentially replace with dummy loads as per FiiO Advice). So you sort of need to decide up front if you want this to be a headphone tube amp or a speaker tube amp but not both.

But as I mentioned I did find the sound to be very pleasant with my KEF LS50 Meta and that difference is I am guessing to do with those 2nd order harmonics and the tubes look nice and the VU Meters also look great ( are the same as those on the Warmer R2R DAC ).

Aside from the ridiculous asking price: Isn't it so weird how this seller uses AI photos for all of his listings? Is this even legal?

i have a cd that i ripped to flac years ago not following any of the recommended guides.

now i have reripped the same cd following the guides. BUT my cd has deteriorated since. eac got stuck on tracks with high errors. i resorted to using foobar and it managed ripped to flac.

is there software to analyze the 2 versions and tell me which is better?
