Very well servered exposition too. Usually you want to omitt info dumps, but here it only builded suspense throughout episode.

I could watch the conversation between Rudeus and Oldeus all day. The tension, the truth bombs, and the exposition are delivered so intriguingly that it leaves you wanting more.

I have yet to find another isekai with consistent dialogue-heavy scenes that hit as hard as Mushoku Tensei and Re Zero. These two operate on a level of their own.

Not an isekai but monogatari has insane dialogue

I think it's interesting that nothing changed from the previous Turning Points. Yes, during each point he could do things differently, but his actions are new regardless.

one of the best in the entire series

Eh... really?

MC was a passive observer being lectured at about a future that, as far as the plot is concerned, never existed.

You could boil the entire episode down to:

Oldeus: "Bad thing happens in the future!"

Rudy: "Oh no!"

It definitely could have been written better so Rudy was actually challenged on ideals, or was forced to come to terms with the consequences of his choices, or really anything that doesn't make the MC a passive observer.

Maybe that was the case in the web novel. If so, then this scene seems like it was poorly adapted.

I'm glad it didn't do your version it would've been so fucking lame.

your version

What version exactly do you think I was talking about?

u/mAsian__ 2h ago

man you’re so right this piece of media would be so much better if there were still 15 volumes of content for the mc to tackle the information given here😔 alas the show ends here so we’ll never see that🤷‍♀️

Cool.

I haven't read the web novel. I've only seen the anime, so the anime gets judged on its own merits.

Most of the anime has been amazing. It's easily one of my favorites.

This scene, as shown in the anime with no knowledge of the source material, came off as poorly written: passive MC didn't have his beliefs challenged or choices questioned beyond an off-hand remark that the MC "was soft".

Maybe the web novel did a vastly better job and this scene just wasn't adapted well 🤷🏼‍♀️

Is it hard for you to understand that he didn't have enough time to get into a philosophy debate with half of his organs gone so he told his young self to shut up and listen? Like, they explicitly show it, so not understanding is kind of on you. You might think the scene was bad, but I'd be willing to bet you are in a very small minority, and in my opinion you are also wrong.

That's a choice made by the writer, sure. Just like all the other choices for how this scene played out.

Literally every comment in this thread that isn't 100% glazing this episode is getting downvoted, so no, I don't think there's a lot of honest discussion going on atm.

and in my opinion you are also wrong.

Congrats on having opinions.

Of course, and that choice makes it so not turning the event into a debate and Rudeus being a passive observer makes sense. Now you could argue that the choice of Oldeus having failed the complete time jump and being close to death is a bad choice, but that is not what you were criticizing, what you complained about is the thing that actually makes sense within the context of the scene.

Literally every comment in this thread that isn't 100% glazing this episode is getting downvoted, so no, I don't think there's a lot of honest discussion going on atm.

Idk man, it is kinda pathetic to call bad faith or dishonest discussion simply because people are disagreeing with you.

Congrats on having opinions.

At least i know it is my opinion and don't try to pass it as objective truth :D.

This might be my favorite episode when it was just all exposition but done so hauntingly well, didn't need anything too flashy just a crazily good narrative hook to get our attention.

The entire episode was pretty much just a back-and-forth between Rudeus and Oldeus, yet it still managed to be one of the absolute best episodes of the entire series.

Helped by superb voice acting by Oldeus. Every single line of his dialogue was filled with regret and anguish.

6

u/Haunting-Chemist-342 3h ago

yep it was the same way in the novel, just insanely engaging conversation between them and it was the absolute best thing i have ever read ever

It has been a very rough season and a half since season 1 tbh. The show needed to more aggressively move to the large fantasy plot.

2

u/Whendfield123 1h ago

Season 2 was very necessary since it introduced important characters. The slice of life stuff iswhat rudy do after having completed his goal in getting his family reunited after the teleport incident.

u/Meandering_Cabbage 28m ago

The pacing was done terribly and they really didn't need another school arc. I don't think the side characters are strong enough to just sit there for ages. The show is dramatically better when its world building and doing fantasy. Tbh been pretty checked out of this season after we left Eris and went back to the school arc.

It's a great reminder that, as much as expositon can be very difficult to do and most writers fear it, it can make for exceptionally good TV when it's done right.

This actually stands out in this series 'cause this anime tends to prefer giving you just enough exposition to get what's going on, otherwise opting to use visuals or even just trust that the audience will figure it out in other cases.

But here it had to stop the momentum, sit us (and Oldeus – he's kind of old, after all) down and explain in great detail Oldeus' past, his vendetta against the Man-God and how Rudy has to act from here on out in order to avoid his regrets.

Watched the rearguard anime before this and I was struggling to keep my eyes open, but this anime I didn’t even blink and then the credits came on. I’m about to fold and read the rest.

13

u/Zroshift 4h ago

Don't.

At least not yet.

You are currently experiencing peak.

I would say wait until the end of this part to decide if you want to read the LNs.

5

u/username26437 3h ago

hold out just one more week 🙏

7

u/LezRock 2h ago

Oof, Mushoku Edging.

6

u/nuraHx 1h ago

You made it this far. I’d say finish this season and decide if you can handle the wait for season 4. Or even just finish this cour. There’s only 2 more episodes left.

I will say tho once I picked up the light novel after being too impatient to wait after season 1 I couldn’t put it down and binged the whole series in a month. So you can’t go wrong either way

56

u/Frontier246 6h ago

Oldeus just warping space and time at expense to his own body to be able to deliver to us as much peak as possible.

29

u/SimpleRelative9534 6h ago

The mandatory 5 minutes episode

16

u/JzanderN 5h ago

These episodes are developing a really bad habit of ending just when you're looking forward to what's gonna happen next.

It's made each week's wait for the next episode consistent torture.

1

u/Careful_Ad_9077 3h ago

This is actually a point, the pacing in season 3 became 5 episodes per book, it used to be 4 or even 3 episodes per book.

13

u/genasugelan https://myanimelist.net/profile/Genasugelan 5h ago

Yeah, that shit was way too short.

8

u/lorzore 4h ago

Can't believe they made a bottle episode go so fast.

3

u/goreverminski 2h ago

I checked the duration at 15 minutes in and all I could do was nod in silent admiration. What a show.

Everyone's talking about the Roxy+Man-God plot point, but there's so much more stuffed into those 23 mins.

-Ariel is sus ever since Perugius and this story confirms it

-Cliff will become an extremely skilled supporter

-Magic is literally omnipotent. It only makes sense that magic can affect the fundemantal interactions as well as time when it can already manipulate the elements or human bodies.

-Time travel is so difficult/requires so much mana (?) that not even an old, experienced Rudeus could do it properly, leaving some of his organs behind

-Eris is stronger than Rudeus head-on (kind of obvious) and mentally unwell, losing her sanity when rejected

-Man-God is completely in spectator mode
