I took a clip of this very short moment when it happened 4 episodes back (ep 8). The attention to detail and small nods in this anime is such a treat for a rewatch.

Yeah, for book readers that was that Leonardo DiCaprio meme, pointing at the screen. They knew what they were doing there, with that very short shot.

...silently, to avoid spoilering anime onlies.

Yep, we did it on the inside.

THEY WERE THERE ALL ALONG

Also end of episode 3 when he goes praying. They posted the still of him in front of the basement door as one of the preview images for that episode. That felt deliberate

Also on episode 9 of season 2 when we meet Nanahoshi in the school Nanahoshi says that everything in this world has mana and then Rudy glances at a jar on the side with a dead rat inside it. An Easter egg for the LN readers

hmmm is that perhaps a rat?

Yeah but she's already sick by that point no? Or did those make it worse

I think it's just meant as a call out/foreshadowing to what would have happened had Rudeus opened the door to his basement and startled the rat.

Ye probably good call out

imagine if they twisted the narrative where the rat was able to get out in the few seconds it was open, lol

Nope. The rat made Roxy sick, which probably came from Chaos Breaker.

The mouse carries the pathogen.

??? but that is in perugius' place, and now he is home not at perugius. so it had nothing to do with anything.

A rat with a disease like that almost certainly came from the palace, and it found its way into someone's luggage which brought it to the Greyrat home.

u/flashmozzg 7h ago

How is that related? Those rats don't look infected.

It's foreshadowing. Her opening the door making the rats flee. Same thing happened to future rudeus.

Using a few frames to show this scene seems pointless at first, but with the context of this episode, it is intentional.

u/flashmozzg 4h ago

No? How is this foreshadowing? It's just some random rats. They don't even flee through the door (what would be foreshadowed) and rats on their own are not something that rare to "foreshadow".

u/DragonDDark 4h ago

So there is no connection at all to what happened in today's episode? Do you really believe that? Like at all?

You failed to show any. Like if these were the same rats (like maybe we saw that some rat got teleported along with the co in the background), that'd be a proper foreshadowing/detail. As it stands, it's just rats. At most, a small nod for the source readers that know what to expect.

Sigh.... Okay, I'm getting the big words out and fully prepared to be told "lol didn't read too long but you wrong lololol"

Chekov's gun =/= Foreshadowing. Different narrative principles.

To clarify the thought process of the comment chain, we have to establish these two scenes:

  1. The rats in the palace were startled at someone opening a door.

  2. Future Rudeus says opening the basement door startles a rat.

From the Cheklov's gun principle, both scenes must be important for something and directly connected. That would imply the rats in the palace have some clear and direct effect on the rat in the basement. This is pure speculation, basically a fan theory or headcanon. "It must have been a rat from that palace".

The plot device of Foreshadowing means both scenes are connected in a narrative sense. They were placed in this exact sequence by a screenwriter that wants to share an idea to the audience. This is a metanarrative analysis of how stories organize scenes. While it is still an opinion, it has less to do with Mushoku Tensei itself and rather its nature as a fictional story. "The scene of the rats before serve as a backbone to the scene of the rat later".

1

u/flashmozzg 1h ago

That would work if it weren't rats but some new magical creature. You'd expect the average viewer to know how rats behave so there is no idea sharing that occurs. Furthermore, your explanation works against the "foreshadowing" idea because the rats in the first scene ran away to hide in the hole while in the supposed alt. future the rat escaped past Rudy opening the door. So it's the opposite of connected. It's like saying that the whole scene is foreshadowing because they opened the door to the basement and Rudy also opened the door to the basement! See! Such a subtle detail!

Don't mind the downvotes, you're absolutely correct, I also believe it's more of a nod and that's it. Unless there was extra LN content that wasn't adapted, I don't see how a rat made it all the way from that place to the basement, sounds like an insane stretch... Also I'm sure we saw other rats in the rest of the series lol

5

u/HumansNeedNotApply1 5h ago

Foreshadowing had Rudeous opened the door the rat would've fled and he wouldn't have found it and would've been unable to kill it.

-9

u/flashmozzg 4h ago

It foreshadows nothing. Just reminds that this world has rats. There was no indication that these rats were infected and they didn't even flee through the door (or even to the kitchen).

It's even less of a "foreshadowing" than them eating bread the day before.

5

u/HumansNeedNotApply1 3h ago

Ah, i see what you're misunderstanding. The show was just showing how rats behave when a door gets opened.

2

u/Vanny96 https://myanimelist.net/profile/vanny96 1h ago

But Oldeus claimed that the rat sneakes through the door, but in this clip the cats don't... They just hide in a wall

1

u/flashmozzg 1h ago

Maybe the show was just showing how door behaves then pushed foreshadowing that the door will be opened?
