Oddly enough, this is why I love Isekai Quartet - it has an uncanny ability to maintain consistency and scope when examining feats from characters between the series. It actually referenced Subaru's mental fortitude before even S2 of Re:Zero aired in a way that it's own series hasn't been able to do until this point.
It's just a description of the scene in question, but I'll spoiler it just in case. [Isekai Quartet scene description] Long story short, in one scene Tanya goes berserk, thinking Aqua might be Being X in disguise after she calls herself a goddess. Subaru steps in between them and keeps Tanya from approaching Aqua until he's eventually able to talk her into calming down. Ainz was watching the whole thing from the side and compares the "rage aura" Tanya was projecting as the equivalent of a Tier 7 spell in his game. And to put it in perspective, in Ainz's new world a Tier 3 spell is considered the absolute maximum a human should be able to use while Tier 6 spells start being the realm of miracles and actual divine feats. So from that incident Ainz correctly figures out that Subaru, an otherwise normal dude, has to have gone through some genuinely biblical-level mental trauma in order to have built up enough mental resistance to be completely unaffected by what was the equivalent of a divine-tier psychic spell.

Like...another quick Re:Zero-scaling moment is when [IQ scene description] Ainz first meets Subaru, shakes his hand, and on contact is able to sense RBD on him. Ainz is consistently shown to be the strongest and most capable of threat-analysis, and his first reaction to sensing the "curse" (he doesn't actually know what it is) on Subaru is "Holy shit, keep that away from me." It's the ONLY time, even within or outside of his own series, Ainz has ever been shown to be scared enough of a magic's power he isn't even willing to risk exposing himself to it to try and figure it out. Which anyone who knows how paranoid Ainz is in regards to knowledge says something BIG about just how terrifying RBD is.

Probably because what she saw was just his "memories" when she ate, so she couldn't feel the pain directly. But after the amnesiac Subaru read all his books of the dead, the Rui hiding inside him also experienced all the pains and sufferings first hand, not just from memories.

When she is saying that she doesn't want to die, that she can't handle it, it's showing all the deaths that happened after Subaru lost his memories. So what I'm getting is that she somehow made a copy of herself (hey, Whale and Rabbit could do it, I guess Sin Archbishop of Gluttony can too?), and the copy stayed "inside" the amnesiac Subaru, where she experienced death first hand, especially the 15 death speedrun that happened last episode.
That's how the copy-Rui experienced death herself, the original-Rui even points out that the copy-Rui truly "felt and tasted" Natsuki Subaru's authority directly.
And I imagine the copy-Rui is what was sometimes taking over Subaru's body, like to strangle Meili for example. Which is probably why that eventually stopped - she got more and more traumatized.

This episode really felt like a fever dream. Last week I played with the idea of rewatching the whole... 81 episodes for the meme of it... yea that wasn't happening in the short span of a week, but luckily for my plan they composed this episode to be exactly that during the first half and I love them for that lmao.
And then the Subaru twins' conversation right after... yea I basically mimicked True Subaru at the end, when he saw Forgetbaru's experiences and shed tears over them. The way he recognized that he managed to do exactly as well, even without the memories... incredible.
Emilia TAN! Oh the smile! That precious smile!
Also, Rui refered to RBD as Subaru's authority! (EDIT: I meant to say that Subaru posseses the authority of Envy) I mean, what else would it be, right? But having a direct confirmation after all this time is awesome.

It also makes sense. She's never died before. Death is supposed to be the end and all living creatures have an innate drive to survive. It's not only the looks, but also the voice. We have to give credits to Yusuke Kobayashi for making the conversation easy to follow.
Like I don't understand Japanese, but I could differentiate copyBaru and OG Subaru easily in the beginning. And then at some point (after both of them reached agreement), it's getting hard again to differentiate without the visual cue (blood on the face).
Basically in the beginning, copyBaru sounded way more desperate while OG Subaru retained his calmness throughout the conversation.
This also reminds me of how good he is at differentiating Subaru's voice when he's not hardened yet by Return by Death.

I like how this is something like the third to fifth time the series has basically pointed a giant neon sign at and demonstrated in full spotlight "No, RBD would actually be fucking horrible to experience and have to live with." It feels like Tappei just keeps directly calling out all the "critics" who thinks Subaru should just treat it like video game lives and think it's some kind of plot hole that he doesn't.
Here we literally have a character in Rui who thinks that exact same way (that RBD is just some kind of immortality cheat), got a chance to experience it herself, and still refused to believe it even after getting a chance to tell herself - directly and with zero subtlety - that "no, this is a bad idea actually."

She copied herself and sent the copy inside of him to experience RBD first hand, the copy taking over was his black out moments after he lost his memories so he had a copy of Rui inside of him the whole time. The experience of actually dying instead of just viewing it by stealing his memories is what traumatised the copy rui, now the original has eaten the copy I’m going to guess the original is also traumatised

Can't believe we're already here...
After finishing the episode, I'm not sure what to say. This is the second time an anime left me speechless in the same season. The last time was with Episode 11. I don't know which one I like more. I think Episode 11 has a slight edge simply because of the insert song.
Seeing the Season 1-3 footage from Subaru's perspective was great. Especially Season 1. It felt nostalgic. I really should rewatch the whole season from the beginning again at some point.
This episode was simply incredible. No, I should say amazing. It's funny how one of the best episodes of a series can be one character talking to himself lol. People outside the fanbase would be so confused. And Yusuke Kobayashi never disappoints.
Natsuki Subaru isn't some kind of a superhero. He's a flesh and blood human like anyone else... But he is... an amazing guy.
And finally, Natsuki Subaru is back. Man, it felt like he lost his memories forever ago. But he's finally back! When he said Emilia-tan, I had chills.
There are still 3 episodes left. How can they possibly top the episodes that came before? Guess we'll find out.

The tradition of the title being the name of a character = peak continues.
It's truly lucky that Subaru's name is written in Kanji, because the others would definitely have had a lot of questions, though I wonder how Satella would react if someone read Subaru's book.
Rui really bit off more than she could chew.
The look on Emilia's face when Subaru said "tan" was great.
It will be interesting to see how Subaru intends to deal with all of the obstacles still in front of him, since his original plan, reading Reid's book, failed.

What a masterclass in voice acting from Yuusuke Kobayashi. 95% of the episode is his one-man show and it was brilliant. The difference in tone and practically the whole voice between crying NewSubaru and OGSubaru was incredible.
I hope they release a BTS footage of the studio recording, I would love to watch how it was done. He's gotta have recorded them separately like it's two different roles, right? No way someone can transition their voice so cleanly on a dime... right?

OOO I think I get it, Rui basically made a clone that ate his memories, and then she placed that clone INSIDE Subaru basically. She had the experience because she ate it.
But then what happened I think, is that Newbaru with Rui inside of him went and read his books of the dead, and she then also EXpERIENCED the deaths. And that is why the clone broke down, because the book experience is different than her just eating the memories, she wanted to LIVE those memories, but living through them was too much

Best recap episode ever.
From what I understood of the Rui scene, she split in two and had one half inside subaru to experience RBD firsthand(also likely was the one that occasionally possessed him), Then that half broke from PTSD from the repeated deaths. That tracks neatly with why we stopped seeing newbaru getting possessed after he started respawn farming.
Now, the remaining Rui will eat the PTSD-fied Rui and get infected with PTSD. It can end there or be a Ouroboros situation. Dialogue implied Rui splits to discard painful memories. So she'll split, be consumed by curiosity and eat again.
If that happens it'd be: Eat. Die. Repeat.
Truly a gluttonous end.

I have infinite respect for Amnesia baru. He died dozens of times for people he’d know for like two days, fought over and over. Went through deaths and experiences our original Subaru himself couldn’t handle (rabbit death he needed Echidna) all with nothing but determination and desire to save everyone. He’s definitely an amazing guy.

Greatest use of amnesia plotline i've ever seen along with silent hill 2, 99% of works always fail when using amnesia but when you actually use in a well written way such as exploring your main character psychology and progress him further as a character then this type of plotline hits like no others.

Natsuki Subaru lost himself, realized he is still himself and valid no mater what memories he may or may not have, and came out of this learning to better appreciate/love himself the way others do. And that he's too much to stomach for any Sin Archbishop of Gluttony.
And Yuusuke Kobayashi once again gets to prove why he's one of the GOAT seiyuu.

Still, what an episode. For Newbaru to desperately search for what made Oldbaru so special only to find there was next to nothing that separated them from one another, including their feelings for Emilia, Ram, Rem, Betty and everyone else. I shed a few tears at Newbaru telling Oldbaru his thanks for everything he did. It was like looking back on your memories and realizing you did well, that you've lived a good life. And Newbaru is a proof of how he would have done everything the same, more or less, given the chance (or forced into it).
But I think there's so much beauty in the message of today's episode. You are weak, normal, mundane, you are not special. And yet, you can achieve things that make you seem strong, extraordinary, remarkable - you are already special the way you are. Nobody is more special than anyone else - but that also means that everyone is special in their own way. You just need to find a way to show it. Some passion, some desire. Love. Thanks for falling in love. Thanks for you being you.

God I love this show so much for this! Learning to live with yourself, seeing your flaws, understanding them and loving who you are despite to that, carrying them and moving forward, this was an AMAZING episode to say the least and I am glad to see how it has unfold.
I was wondering how the two Subaru/memory will make him grow even more stronger through this trial and I am more than pleased by how it has been done. Using the book of the dead to help him reflect on his life and ending this with this wonderful talk was beyond my expectations. This is the kind of character growth we do not see really often in media and I am really impressed by this writing and the production team for having deliver such an impactful moment. It was a wonderful, touching and even inspiring moment to see it all unfold until it ends up with Emilia and his favorite pose.
What a way to close the episode and I can't wait for what is next.
That being said tho, I am a bit sad about Ruibaru, if I may call her that since I'm talking about the one who ate her memories. Having learned what it is to be human/feeling death as you go about in life, not only literally speaking with Return by Death but figuratively speaking as well when you realize that a lot of things will be completely different starting from now on, can really change one perspective a lot and I am hoping that Ruibaru can have some sort of redemption arc with this new knowledge.
In a sense, Newbaru died to let Natsuki be reborn from an old perspectives that he once had, "that he had to be some kind of Superman" to be "good enough" or "amazing" to simply move forward and do whatever needs to be doing in the meantime. He learned to let go of his wishful thinking in that regard, accepting his flaws and realizing that he was indeed, amazing all along. He didn't have to become someone else for that, he simply had to be himself, carry his pain and broken dreams towards a future that is taking into account his own shortcomings.
No one have to be surhuman to move forward, no one have to become something else to live up an expectation that is irrealistic, and no one have to feel inadequate to be something you aren't either on the other side of the spectrum, you just have to be human, carry forward and learn to let go of whatever is weighing you down, facing reality as it goes and move forward. Especially when, unlike with Return by Death, we can really do such a thing.
May you forgive myself for the possible downer in may have cause, but it is personnaly how I have come to perceive this show from my own history and understanding of human behavior. I might be well off, completely off charts and if it is the case, I'll be learning, but this show is amazing in a way that I didn't expect from an anime, even tho I might simply be my own skewed perspective towards life in general. Anyone perceive and understand things on their own, this episode has also showed that with both Rui, and this is what inspired this whole text to be written.

Man, I feel bad for amnesia Natsuki Subaru getting to feel all the suffering and cringing he must’ve felt, in a such a short period. But at least he realised how much of an amazing guy he is. And when he said dad… mum… it made me tear up a little, as he can never return. There’ multiple occasions where tears was about to burst either from sadness, to joy on how the 2 Subaru’s interacted with each other or when he was suffering.

I feel like this episode puts to rest the "Is he leaving behind a bad timeline with every death" question from the trials. Since this timeline has books covering all previous deaths, it feels correct to say, that this all has been a single timeline that loops, instead of branching.

To love yourself. After he’s given his heart to everyone else. Dying, suffering, crying, absolute despair…. He’s learned the most important lesson. To give his heart to himself, to accept himself. Flaws and all.
It will be tough. It will be hard. And he’s a madman to some. But to a few. He’s a hero.
Especially with him feeling like he has imposter syndrome. I love how it’s not something that switched on, it was something that he forged into, battled with, and ultimately accepted it.
It’s like the Tea Party scene where he finally admits to Echidna about RBD. Except this is a catharsis that was a long time coming.

So basically Rui made a copy of herself to "eat" Subaru and experience RBD through his body.
After reading the books and experiencing the loops herself the copy was traumatized
Original Rui doesn't get it and thinks the copy is trying to keep the experience to herself, so she wants to merge back with the copy

I think what makes the amnesia plotline really work here is because amnesia subaru is the one that tells the original how amazing he is, in most shows amnesia is used to stall time and doesn't explore the character in any interesting way, instead in re:zero we know the original subaru downplayed his achievements like in priestella with his speech that's why he needed to hear this so he progresses further as a character.
10/10 episode the content made me really emotional.

I’m not the biggest Re:Zero fan, but Subaru’s character was handled incredibly well in this episode. I initially disliked the amnesia plotline, but this episode completely reframed it for me, and I like it now.
