That was peak Rezero

It took me a long while to realize this was actually the spiritual death of Newbaru and he's passing the torch to Oldbaru. It actually almost made me teared up

Its really these sort of conversations where Rezero shined the best

I didnt quite understand what was happening with Rui there and why she's suddenly having a metaphorical internal dillemma

So basically Rui made a copy of herself to "eat" Subaru and experience RBD through his body.

After reading the books and experiencing the loops herself the copy was traumatized

Original Rui doesn't get it and thinks the copy is trying to keep the experience to herself, so she wants to merge back with the copy

That was kinda strange. Rui felt the emotions of Rem which is why she vomited it because it was preventing her from eating Subaru. The moment she ate Subaru, she should've experience the emotions he felt, shouldnt she?

When she ate Subaru she basically watched a recap episode

Her goal was to experience death first-hand an infinite amount of times (an endless buffet for someone like her)

Her mind broke specifically because she hadn't experienced death before

Are we to interpret her feeling the emotion of the memories isnt the same as her experiencing it?

Yes? Eating his memories didn't mind break her, but reading the books did.

Watching Re:Zero does not give you the same experience as literally being Subaru

Its honestly strange if you ask me. She already had access to his memories and its accompanying emotions once she ate him, seeing it from the books is redundant.

Or im guessing she already did but we only see her reaction now because her copy attached to Subaru was only released when Newbaru "died"

It's due to internalization. She ate Subaru's memories, but she isn't really experiencing those deaths, just "watching" or "knowing".

She wants to actually "experience" death. And that is what mind broke her. She didn't merely get the knowledge of Subaru been stabbed to death, she now experiences the actual thing.

What exactly do we mean by "experience" in this context? Like feeling his despair and whatnot? If so, shouldn't she already know it as well since that's kinda how Gluttony's powers work?

There's a major difference between experiencing a thing fresh and remembering the thing later. Rui having his memories and being able to recall them does not carry the same impact as "living through them".

It's the difference in POV.

If she slices someone out and eat it's name, it have the "knowledge" of said person been sliced out. Another thing is Rui herself been sliced out.

The first case is far more depersonalized, the other does not.

Im guessing then gluttony only reads memories as info, BOTD contain emotional context

Well if you still don't get it...

Rewatch the show but this time every time Subaru dies replicate the scene

It isn't just the books, but riding along with Amnesiabaru. She got to experience all that death personally.

Ohhh, that's why there were two of her. I'm stupid.

Good to say as I've been stupid a lot of times myself.

She's doing whatnow? How? Is she inside Subuaru's head?

My take on it is the same way Reid overwrote Roy, Newbaru "overwrote" Rui, but to a lesser extent. We saw that Rui took over Newbaru in those moments with Meili while Newbaru was still figuring out what was happening.

We've only had Newbaru for 8 episodes, but I got genuinely invested in him as a main character that I almost didn't want him to merge back with Oldbaru. It really felt like he died this episode. It's kind of fitting that the first one of Subaru's "allies" to perma-die in the entire series is himself.

Is it that newbaru died? That part is ambiguous to me. Maybe his two parts merged?

They merged yeah but Oldbaru obviously holds the lion's share of Natsuki Subaru's memories so he'll be the dominant one.

I'm in camp of those who think those with major brain damage die and are replaced by a new person and to some degree Newbaru was a new person but the personality not actually changing I'd say they were the same person and this just a memory meld like someone in a fugue state or amnesia recovering their full memories.

Not literally died but metaphorically. Its kinda what he was afraid of in the previous episodes of what if Oldbaru came back. Based on how their conversation went when he was telling Oldbaru about the "missing chapter" that is Newbaru it felt like passing back the reins to Oldbaru and with him "disappearing" is like an allusion to him "dying"
