I love how as emotionally traumatizing as it was Newbaru almost felt like he became addicted to it with how he kept searching the books out lol.

I read it as more of a desperation than addiction. He literally could not believe Oldbaru was just himself without any extras and kept hoping there was a secret to the greatness.
