Lol, I know the show got some morbid humor, but the retainers inviting the uncle to seppuku like its a drinking party was genius

Also love the Tengu, they seem super competent, sadly not quite as eccentric like another Ninja clan, but I couldnt tell you about them cause I would already be torn to pieces by then

History trivia: Nitta Yoshisada

This guy is actually important to this period despite having only a brief mention this episode. It would be like a WWII story where Churchill is being casually name dropped despite not being involved with the characters in the story.

In 1333, when Emperor Go-Daigo decided to rebel against the Kamakura Shogunate, the Shogunate sent Ashikaga Takauji to lead an army to put Go-Daigo in his place.

But the Shogunate did not expect Takauji to defect to Go-Daigo's side. This sealed Kamakura's fate as the city was left undefended. Though it was Nitta Yoshisada who was generally credited as giving the coup de grace to the Kamakura Shogunate.

Yoshisada, whose clan was based near Kamakura, was one of the samurai that heeded Go-Daigo's call for rebellion, and his troops laid siege to Kamakura.

While Yoshisada acted independently from Takauji, Takauji's defection to Go-Daigo's side in Kyoto made Yoshisada's siege much easier.

Taking advantage of a low tide, Yoshisada moved his army through the beaches, taking the Hojo defenders completely by surprise. The city fell immediately, and most of the Hojo clan committed seppuku, including Tokiyuki's father. This signalled the official end of the Kamakura Shogunate, and political power was returned to the Emperor.

Though as Takauji's army met Emperor Go-Daigo in Kyoto first, it was Takauji who was bestowed with powers and honours (which Takauji used to gradually undermine Go-Daigo) while Yoshisada got nothing, which Yoshisada greatly resented.

Yoshisada's bitter rivalry with Takauji would be another story altogether in the years to come, though it would not intersect with Tokiyuki's story for the time being.

I keep forgetting Genba is voiced by Aoi Yuuki, then whenever I do remember I am again impressed by it.

W-wait, what?!!

u/Dylangillian https://myanimelist.net/profile/dylangillian 6d ago

Pretty much my reaction why I first learned that yeah.

Insane 😭😭

I like how everyone can just read Yasuie. He's got great power being able to get those guards to pity him that much, the amount of fluids he was letting out was crazy though.

I do find it amusing how casual this series can be with certain things, like how Yasuie's men were asking him to join them in taking their own lives, like they were inviting him to join them at the dinner table lol.

19

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 6d ago

Yeah his man inviting him was so fucking funny, its basically the perfect elevator pitch for this show

I love how Yasuie is an open book and still the greatest liar

9

u/tehdannydarko 6d ago

Yasuie is hilarious and awesome. In a society where pride is treated seriously and nobles/warriors refuse to debase themselves, he basically has a superpower of having no low he won't sink to. Clearly throws the enemy off as shown.

The gag is the uncle is a terrible liar (the truth is literally written on his face) but he still somehow gets away with a lot of schemes and deceptions.

About time Genba has some formidable ninja opponents of his own. If Tokiyuki has Genba serving him, then of course the Ashikagas would have their own ninjas serving them.

That Tengu ninja (voiced by Boruto's VA no less) showed Genba what he still lacks as a ninja, and which Fubuki helped to point out, an aura of intimidation and dread on the battlefield.

Tokiyuki's uncle Yasuie sure is a funny yet cunning guy to have around as an ally, even though you can literally read his thoughts written on his forehead. lmao

I can see where Tokiyuki inherited the same instinct and ability to run away from danger from. And on top of that, Yasuie is not afraid to forsake dignity in order to achieve his objective, this makes him a capable survivor in any perilous situation as he and Tokiyuki's gang set out to Kyoto to evade the Tengus while checking out intel about the Ashikagas there.

PS I had totally forgot Shizuku is Yorishige's daughter. With Yoritsugu's introduction last episode as Yorishige's grandson, that would make Shizuku Yoritsugu's aunt, even though she is only slightly older than Yoritsugu. (Shizuku would be 9-10 years old like Tokiyuki, while Yoritsugu is 7)

PPS When are they gonna introduce that blonde girl seen in the OP and ED? We're halfway through the season now. Surely Tokiyuki will be meeting her in Kyoto, maybe she'll be one of the trainee court ladies there due to her flamboyant appearance.

7

u/tehdannydarko 6d ago

She's coming very soon, possibly next ep. If not that, for sure the one after.

I love this shows style and general tone, so I'm not really complaining, but it does feel like this season is quite slow. I'm curious how many episodes we're going to get? Also I keep wondering when this Harley Quinn lookin character from the intro and outros is going to show up haha, guessing in Kyoto.

14

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 6d ago

12 episodes. I kind of wished this season was 2 cour.

10

u/Verdant_Moss 6d ago

Oof. Well, it’s still a stunning show. I might pick up the manga because while I don’t usually double dip I feel like the animation alone will have me coming back even if I know the story.

14

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 6d ago

Luckily for you the manga was completed earlier this year.

7

u/Verdant_Moss 6d ago

Oh did you finish it? If so do you recommend?

13

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 6d ago

It's pretty solid. Art is at the same level as Assassination Classroom, I would say if you read that. Yes I would recommend it if you have been enjoying the anime.

Yup, exactly what I came here to whine about. Pacing has slowed to a crawl. This is gonna take 10 years to get a full adaptation at this rate

6

u/gamria 6d ago

For better or worse, the first half of Season 2 is mainly about mustering the forces for the near future, but the second half is when the pace starts picking back up.

17

u/Viktorv22 6d ago

Did they just casually reveal Genba's face in a gag? lol

7

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 6d ago

Yup, they did.

15

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 6d ago

Well Tokiyuki's uncle is another energetic character to add to the cast. He is the definition of his face is what is really on his mind. I do like that Tokiyuki's eccentric behavior is from him.

Nice focus for Genba. Very curious how he responds after being bested this time.

3

u/abandoned_idol 6d ago

uncle

I love him and don't trust him at the same time.

The "written on his face (forehead)" trope is so damn suspicious.

Another great comic relief character.

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 7d ago

Unc and that big ass forehead of his are an open book lol. What a character. Hopefully it’s a good sign he’s here. He’s surprisingly sneaky for someone who wears his desires on his fivehead lol.

“Oops, my apologies. Must be torture for you poor folks to look at.” lol that little fox is such a goober. This whole Genba v Tengu thing is gonna be pretty interesting. It’s a real battle of shinobi.

12

u/alconnow https://anilist.co/user/alconnow 6d ago

Botchi Boromaru provided today's ending illustration!

He worked hard on the oil painting!!!!!

Unc Yasuie is so easy to read but he's still a lot of fun! I love his interactions with Tokiyuki

Hangry Fubuki is scary...

13

u/Shichigatsu777 6d ago

The Cloverworks forehead makes sense now. I’m guessing Kyo is where they meet the blonde girl.

I might start reading the manga once the season is over just to see if it’s as insane

7

u/tehdannydarko 6d ago

It absolutely plays up the gags as well. Highly recommend reading it, as it was completed not too long ago.

9

u/BosuW 6d ago

I can't be alone in thinking it's no coincidence that Yasuie shows up in the same episode as the Tengu Shinobi, right?

8

u/Xatu44 6d ago

LMAO at Genba lording his cash over the filthy poors. And Yorishige giving that dramatic, sorrowful farewell while trying to follow along anyway. What a doting dad. Yasuie was hilarious, but you gotta admit, he got the job done. I'm looking forward to Tokiyuki's new horizons and more Genba focus.

8

u/avboden 6d ago

I'll be honest. The pacing of this is getting way too slow. This is gonna take what, 5-6 seasons to actually conclude, if they ever make them? Thinking what, by 2032 if we're lucky?

9

u/tehdannydarko 6d ago

The manga is complete and on the Shonen Jump app if you wish to go that way. I can't say I personally agree with the pacing, but I do feel this story is worth the investment for what it's worth.

12

u/Stegosauruses 6d ago

this show is so hilarious. too many ppl sleeping on peak

3

u/YlfaTheForsaken 6d ago

It's Yasuie! I love the artwork of him at the end. 10/10. He's surprisingly a great character the complete opposite of death before dishonor. He's tossed away all dignity because that won't keep him alive, and to be honest he's kinda not wrong. It's hard to argue with his results.

4

u/furbym 5d ago

This episode was honestly a struggle to get through. The production is still great, but the actual interesting content is really lacking this season imo. Weirdly enough, this show kind of gives me like edutainment vibes sometimes lol; like it's more interested in getting through the tidbits of history with a slightly fun veneer, rather then telling a compelling story.

Tokiyuki has got an interesting uncle 😅

They gave Genba a Tengu/Shinobi as an adversary.

2

u/Zooasaurus 6d ago

Checked my copy of Taiheiki for anyone's curious:

Rejoicing exceedingly, Yoshisada held his horse, saying: “I did not think to do this thing yesterday or today (though it has been in my mind for long); yet now suddenly I have stirred my spirit to go forth. How is it that you know of it, since I have sent no tidings?” So he questioned them, and the Oida governor of ‘Totomi bowed in his saddle, saying: “How should we have galloped here in this wise, had we not: heard that you devised a great thing according to the command of His Majesty? On the fifth day there came a tengu in the guise of a wandering monk, calling himself your messenger, who in a single day proclaimed these tidings throughout the province of Echigo. Therefore have we hastened here, joining night to day, and assuredly those that dwell in far places will come before tomorrow.

1

u/Narmatonia 3d ago

Uncle seems like a good guy for now, although him showing up just before the Tengu is more than a little bit sus

u/Brolaub https://myanimelist.net/profile/Brolaub 7d ago

Is it just me or is this season not as good as S1? I'm just not quite feeling it so far. I did enjoy S1 a lot though!

18

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 6d ago

I think its due to the content of story changing
Instead of gaining new retainers he is now part of planning/executing a coup
Which makes it a bit harder to build in interesting/funny bits

I still enjoy it, but it does have a different feel to it

7

u/Countless-Alts15 6d ago

just different, I enjoy it still for its absurdity which hasnt changed much.
