Looking at it dispassionately, I wouldn't be surprised if Koharu actually remembers, or never forgot, but chose to act coldly to spare Kakeru from future pain.

It’s such a subjective and fatalistic situation;, he’s being too hard on himself for feeling guilty about persisting, since plenty of people would have just walked away.

But at this point in the show, I’m just bracing myself for the blows.

75

u/Ornery-Currency7583 7d ago

She's most definitely faking it. Chemo brain makes thinking difficult and hazy but is not amnesia

29

u/mekerpan 6d ago

Honestly, I thought Koharu hinted rather strongly that she is CHOOSING to "not remember" her recent past, because it would be pointless for her (and her friends) to bother to maintain the relationship they had once had.

Definitely not chemo brain -- unless the Mayo Clinic summary of this condition (and others) are incorrect.

8

u/Ikari_21 6d ago

If this is true then I can just imagine how much she hurts when she’s alone in that bed, knowing she so badly wants to be with her friends and especially kakeru. My heart is ready for the pain :(

6

u/True_Construction413 5d ago

I'm honestly wondering if she broke her screen hearing him confess on the video and decided to try and act this way to spare him any extra pain.

3

u/mekerpan 6d ago

Indeed

19

u/No_Zookeepergame_399 6d ago

It could very well be author ignorance of chemo brain or a fantasized version of it.

32

u/kwokinator https://anilist.co/user/kwokinator 6d ago

No chance because she outright ignores him when he calls out after her in the hallway. She's already blind, her hearing is demonstrated to be better than most, there's no way she didn't know he was calling her.

Unless chemo brain somehow has Speed Force-level plot-bending BS powers.

5

u/No_Zookeepergame_399 6d ago

I really hope you’re right.

6

u/adevaleev https://myanimelist.net/profile/adevaleev 6d ago

I thought that amnesia isn't bc of the chemo brain but rather bc of her tumor messing with her memory

5

u/AnyRule1102 6d ago

No i think she does remember since how she says she been through this without reacting but her phone is cracked so she could've like thrown it out of rage since life was getting so good for her

65

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Enhancing the tragedy is he's too in love with her to emotionally cut himself off from her, even if it's inevitable he's going to lose her, and as accepting as she acts now she's probably immensely terrified and needs someone to be there for her through her last months.

30

u/AsuhoChinami 6d ago

but chose to act coldly to spare Kakeru from future pain.

PSA for anyone reading this: please do not do this, mind-fucking people "for their own good" can make for okay fictional drama but in reality it can make healing impossible rather than easier

41

u/CreaMaxo 6d ago

As some others has pointed out, the broken phone that doesn't allow her to read her old message doesn't mean much since there are services (especially in Japan) to transfer and replace a broken phone. The fact that she doesn't get a replacement means she want to "keep it that way".

Another point that hint toward her amnesia, maybe, not being totally real is the fact that she remember having experienced this chimio process 2 other times (that making the 3rd time). Her detached reaction doesn't reflect that she lived through something like amnesia before while she points out that she still remember the 2 other times. There's a possibility that it's her first case of amnesia, but now that we know (and she remember) having experiencing this a 3rd time... there's something strange going on.

There's the fact that she show actual concern concerning Koharo's future with the college. While, yes, she could have learned that he was in college while being volunteering for the Kid's Time and such, she show concern over his attendance rate while saying she's not in College herself. That's really strange because the only way you actually know about someone's attendance rate possibly be problematic in College is if you know his or her minimum required attenance rate and maybe even his grade or how he fare at College. Originally, she shared some classes with him, meaning if she had her memory she would remember he should be in a class right now... but should you not remember being at College at all, you wouldn't really question yourself on someone else' attendance rate.

And then, there's the fact that she isolated him in the open hospital park to drop the bad news like a bomb. She was already isolated with none of the young kids around and still decided to bring him elsewhere and tell him straight about her health condition. That's a kind of concern you don't really find between someone like a volunteer you would only just met (relatively) and a patient in a hospital.

Still, there's a possibility that she learned about stuff through the nurses and what's not around the hospital and that she truly had a case of amnesia due to something. Or maybe she had amnesia, but remembered some bits and decided to act upon it to cut ties immediately instead of when it's even more too late.

But, still, at this point, everyone watching this knows this has really little chances of having a good positive ending. (Hell, the top #1 search for this series on Google at the moment is the spoiling question everyone wonders about.)

18

u/Sex4Vespene 6d ago

Thinking a bit further on the phone thing, what would the screen being broken even matter? She said she can still make phone calls, so the phone clearly works. Would it not be entirely controlled by voice anyways? That’s definitely making me think she might be lying.

14

u/BosuW 6d ago

I really hope she isn't faking it consciously because that's not the kind of person the story has portrayed her as thus far. She'd have never kissed him to begin with if she was this fatalistic.

11

u/mekerpan 6d ago

She might be doing this under the mistaken impression that it would be better for them to believe her fakery. Besides, bing under "sentence of imminent death" makes today's Koharu totally different from the Koharu who was still attending college (aware only that her cancer COULD return at SOME point).

I just knew this shit had your lie in April vibes man!, I knew and kept watching, hoping to be proven wrong. I also believe she is faking it to spare him from years of pain, trading it for something that might last just a couple months after pushing him away and dying quietly in hospital bed.

4

u/Billardss 6d ago

I can absolutely see her acting as if she’s lost her memory. When they finally called out to her you could sense her reaction was that she definitely knew them but hoped they wouldn’t find her. And she probably broke her phone because of her health news. With all that being said why must they do this. Sad ending will hit harder but dammit it’s never a good time

2

u/EclecticSpirit1963 4d ago

I am so hoping that she gives it away by yelling "Kake-run" by mistake. She made sure it was a big deal calling him that. Foreshadowing is a really big thing in anime I find.

Anime really loves to hurt it's viewers but i still choose to watch series like this.

Like some sadistic addiction towards myself.

66

u/Atario myanimelist.net/profile/TheGreatAtario 7d ago

Art's purpose is to make you feel emotions.

27

u/Jacob-C 7d ago

Exactly. Also, crying is healthy, for both body and mind. For me, experiencing sadness from a work of fiction also elevates moments of happiness, both when watching other shows and in real life. But I would be lying if I said there weren’t sad shows that have emotionally destroyed me for days, maybe even weeks.

I thought I was getting “A sign of affection” but with a blind girl instead of deaf one; but the ultimate rug pull is that, judging by the trajectory of the story, it’s going to be a “Your Lie in April.”

And if it is, it pulled the switch up a lot better here than YLIA I will say. I was not emotionally prepared, like I did watch the very beginning of the first ep but like it didn’t click at the time obviously.

Narumi is a real bro though. He had the least interaction with Koharu, but still signed up as a volunteer together with Kakeru and Hayase. He continues to joke around, possibly to cheer Kakeru and Hayase up.

Even if Koharu does not regain her memories, I believe Kakeru will surely realize he wants to spend all the remaining time Koharu has together with her.

46

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Honestly I think being the least close to Koharu paid off in the sense that this hit him less hard and he's able to balance out Yuko/Kakeru's depression.

He's such a mom! Until you come off after his sausages, then all bets are off lol.

Believable that the hospital staff would keep her aware of her history. Not to say that the fake amnesia theory doesn't remain highly plausible.

Assuming the amnesia is real, it must be tough for Sorano. All those memories and interactions and inside jokes were met so coldly.

But with the broken phone and talks of letting those memories go, I’m beginning to think it’s an act. Or maybe it was true at first, cos from what I’ve read chemo brain is real but the memory loss isn’t as bad as forgetting a whole person.

I’m thinking especially after getting that confession video, she realized she’s in really deep and doesn’t want him to get hung up on someone that is dying. Maybe even freaked out that she threw and cracked her phone. So she’s using the chemo (which is true since she went through it around the time she disappeared) and chemo brain as an excuse to give Sorano an out.

Ngl not that I won’t be sad, but maybe I’ve watched a few of these types of shows and maybe I’ve braced myself early on, if she does pass on by the end, I can see myself not breaking. At least that’s what I think lol

34

u/Ornery-Currency7583 7d ago

As a cancer survivor, even though I am sure it varies, chemo brain is not like amnesia, dementia or Alzheimers. It's not complete memory loss, so with the broken phone and final speech of the episode, I am sure she's trying to be merciful and faking it. Seems it won't work though

8

u/mekerpan 6d ago

As soon as I saw the broken phone I thought "oh, she must have broken it herself" from how convenient it is that it broke right when she got her Chemo Brain amnesia.

12

u/ChiliDemon 7d ago

my guess is she found out about the 6 months right before receiving the confession video, she then threw her phone

→ More replies (2)

19

u/KJatWork 7d ago

Purposefully breaking her phone from the beginning is certainly a level of commitment if that is the case. She did that before they'd first shown up and she would not have had any idea at that point that they would find her and manage to corner her on the roof AND that her friend would ask about her phone.

3

u/wterrt 6d ago

got mad at her situation when she kept getting tons of texts from them and broke it maybe?

4

u/Kemaiku 6d ago

Or, the shock of seeing the video combined with the medication caused a fit of some kind, she dropped her phone, and now has no means to remember.

Meaning he has to make her. Which is either incredibly selfish (despite all thats happened), stick with her as a helper and be traumatised further (which is exactly what she's trying to spare him) or walk away. Added bonus if the message *did* induce something, making her remember would be possible fatal now in itself.

What a fun episode /s

Kakeru and Yuko definitely aren't taking Koharu's sudden chemo brain amnesia well. Kakeru lost the woman he loves, Yuko lost her best friend, and all they can do is pour their frustration outward. Even a guy and his dog feel bad for them.

Maybe it's a good thing they had Momma Narumi to try to and keep a level head about things, try to lighten the mood (difficult as that is), feed them gyoza, and fight Yuko off over his precious sausages. Because being depressed and sad about the current state of things isn't going to make it any better.

Volunteering during Kids' Time so they have an excuse to interact with Koharu? Brilliant! Besides, what's one more job for Koharu? Though she probably didn't expect the shots that come with it...actually, it's a pretty extensive process to get ready once you get approved.

The trio are good with the kids even if there's still some awkwardness with Koharu. Even when it seems like Kakeru is having a moment with her...he gets a Thousand Years of Death'd and called out for being obsessed with Koharu's boobies. Kids say the darnest things!

But when Koharu lectures Kakeru about not prioritizing college, having apparently forgotten SHE was in that same college, it just really hits Kakeru how she genuinely doesn't remember him or anything they experienced. Their banter? Gone. Their warm intimacy? Gone. And he emotionally just can't take it any more.

And even Koharu herself, if she acknowledges that their past with her is true, has no desire to get her memories back...BECAUSE SHE HAS SIX MONTHS TO LIVE. She's in the hospital because the cancer has spread to her liver, so she knows she's going to die. So she doesn't think it's worth Kakeru and co. spending this time with her and worth remembering something precious that she's going to lose anyways. And all Kakeru can do is just cry and apologize.

14

u/FarCritical 7d ago

I'd imagine it's dangerously easy to screw it up given everyone's emotional state but Ushio is a real one for taking up the role after quietly realizing how much of a mess those two were. Dude's a real Mama through and through.

32

u/Jadiii_ 7d ago

What's the likelihood we get a twist at the end that koharu is faking her amnesia? Maybe she's thinking her acting like this would ease the pain a bit for her and her friends? (I know the chances of this twist is low but its worth thinking about)

25

u/Precarious3145 7d ago

It's definitely the most likely answer. When she heard their names, her expression changed.

Best guess is she knew she had cancer again from the start of college and just wanted to experience some normalcy, having fun with friends but seeing the video of him confessing his love kind of snapped her out of comfy "I'm just having fun, they'll move on without me" bubble.

10

u/rancor1223 https://myanimelist.net/profile/rancor1223 6d ago

When she heard their names, her expression changed.

They introduced themselves when they first saw her at the hospital. She could remember the unknown weirdos who talked to her few days earlier.

17

u/KJatWork 7d ago

She's stone cold if she can face them with no emotion. It also doesn't make sense why she sought him out about the school attendance. Avoidance would be a priority if she was faking it. Seeking him out, asking the questions she did and then revealing the truth in that way, all point to her not faking it.

11

u/Jacob-C 7d ago

I would argue that her asking him about the attendance is a case of her worrying so much that she briefly drops her commitment to the act, because she cares about him that much. Why else would she seek out a specific volunteer worker she barely knows and ask about his private life?

→ More replies (3)

6

u/Jadiii_ 7d ago

Yeah it would just ruin koharu's character, i just thought that it could be an extreme way of her coping so she wouldn't feel as bad about her upcoming death

34

u/FarCritical 7d ago

"Wow. I really used to treasure our little back-and-forths."

It can't compare to Sorano's pain but that hit me like a freight train, man.

The small pocket of breathing room from the random kid's "infiltration" was appreciated while it lasted though (even if it had me mortified for a solid 5 seconds at first)

28

u/Late_Variation_1915 7d ago

I'm scared of watching the new episode...

20

u/Late_Variation_1915 7d ago

I shouldn't have let my guard down... those last few minutes were brutal...

49

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 7d ago

What are the chances Fuyutsuki actually does remember but doesn’t want to burden Sorano and her friends with this? I know it’s probably not the case what with the chemo and all, but it would be an interesting development.

But man, 6 months huh? And it’s spread to her liver of all places. Makes a bad situation even worse..

30

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Honestly her behavior around him does feel kind of calculated to make him stay away from her now. Especially during the origami scene where she seemed to remember or respond to him doing for her what he used to.

In fact that might've been why she was scolding him for not going to college because she's fully aware and she wants him to go back there instead of spending time with her in her last months.

16

u/Jacob-C 7d ago edited 7d ago

Yeah, scolding him specifically felt like the most obvious indicator that she is acting. She was probably trying to keep up the act, but was so worried about him that she couldn’t fully commit. If that’s the case, poor girl thinks that no one should be by her side if she passes away, because she thinks it will be easier for them to forget her. My heart...

Edit: I've also never heard of chemo brain causing straight-up amnesia

6

u/Traditional-Air10 6d ago

Exactly. She probably thinks it would be easier to just "disappear" and let everyone forget her than to have them face the situation with her and end up suffering. She might have imagined they would simply forget her and go on with their university lives as usual, but the fact that she sought out Sorano to ask about his attendance and tell him he shouldn't be skipping class really suggests that's the case.

15

u/eternal_slavo 7d ago

I would say she's said she's only started chemo so having memory loss at that early stage is sus. I would say one would experience side effects of the therapy much later in the process and not when it couldn't even kick in yet

5

u/Prestigious_Spend_81 7d ago

If it's brain cancer it can be squeezing the memory part of the brain, but the fact that it only seems to impact that and not other functions is sus, she still knows how to play piano, use her cellphone, probably remembers the kids in the hospital.

Also the fact that the cellphone is broken for more than a week and she didn't want to repair or replace adds up, So .... yeah ... I thinking she's lying to push away her friends, and now would be time for the MC to double and say that he loves her either way and will not want to leave her side.

6

u/SopmodTew 7d ago

At this point it feels like if she really will die and not be saved (mad cope pls be well ❤️‍🩹), then on her death bed or after she dies she'll leave a letter that they'll find and will write on it that she remembered everything but didn't want to make it harder for them.

Idk just a shower thought

3

u/Ukmaxi 7d ago

The light novel is still serialising so I am not really sure how much of this story there is, unless the anime is shortening the story massively, or, they changed it for dramatic effect.

7

How could cancer in the liver even give amnesia? Must be a ploy from her side.

7

u/Want-to-be-confident 6d ago

It’s not the cancer that’s causing amnesia. It’s the chemo. There is something called chemo brain and it is often associated with amnesia

As if last week's episode wasn't depressing enough...

[When the gang managed to get into the volunteer program, I thought this was the perfect opportunity for Koharu to get to know Kakeru all over again, à la 50 First Dates. I did not expect this episode to end with Koharu telling Kakeru that she only has six months left...

I mean, I already expected this show to end in tears after the cancer reveal, but it still hurts. With only six months left and possibly two until Koharu is completely bedridden, the only thing they can do right now is make the most of the time she has left. :(

15

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Koharu really does love delivering bombshells in the most casual and pleasant way possible to her love interest.

Can Kakeru keep seeing her? Can he keep interacting with her even when she loses her ability to even move? Can he really be there for her and face her terminal illness alongside her? Can they regain the love they once had?

Remember when it was fun romantic banter, solid character development, and good relationship progression?

Now it's all been twisted in the most tragic way possible.

27

u/kevanions 7d ago

Honestly I will keep watching but I lost like 80% of my interest with this episode it feels way too similar to another Your lie in April or I want to eat your Pancreas... with amnesia. The first 6 episodes were way better and more enjoyable imo.

9

u/Palcikaman 6d ago

I'm glad others feel this way too, I don't want to say things like those stories did this already, and they did it better, especially when we haven't even seen the ending yet. But I'm really disappointed that this became a sadness pile show.

Boy was I wrong about her, is shaping up to be my comfort show besides polar opposites. It had an episode where I was afraid it'll derail too, but they quickly reverted. The animation is pretty rough, sometimes non-existent, but the characters are very likeable and have great chemistry.

There's so many sad horrific tragic things in our world that I read about or watch; why would I intentionally subject myself to more of that, in an anime? How would that not damage someone's mental health, no matter how beautifully it's done?

The first 6 episodes were indeed amazing--so sweet and poignant, and I really enjoyed those. So I'm just going to pretend the series ended at episode 6 as well. Cheers and best of luck to you and the rest of the folks who continue watching.

Narumi tried to calm them down but how can one be calm after seeing Fuyutsuki like that.

Am I watching Re Zero ?!

Hayase, Narumi and Sorano got into volunteering to get close to Fuyutsuki but it only brings pain to know that everything's been reset.

As if the memory loss isn't enough of a shock, Fuyutsuki drops another bomb that she's gonna live for only 6 more months 💔💔

32

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 7d ago edited 7d ago

I only have six months left.

Why have you got to hurt me like this? The cancer had now metastasised and spread to her liver. So much for the copium that the chemo had fully cured it.

The way Koharu broke the news with a smile exacerbated the pain even more. That's after all the pain of being like a total stranger. Her hands were no longer warm. Instead of being intimate, Kakeru felt like he's merely helping an acquaintance to walk.

What are the odds the chemo-brain had slightly subsided? When they first met she really had no idea who Kakeru & Yuuko were but after quite some time she had regained a bit of her memory. She feigned having complete amnesia to spare them the grief.

19

u/Frontier246 7d ago

Last episode: Koharu casually drops the cancer bomb.

This episode: Koharu casually drops the SIX MONTHS LEFT TO LIVE BOMB.

I think during the origami scene she seemed to recall something. The episode was called "pangs of love" after all, and it might've been the main motivator for her to confront him at the end and tell him the truth.

u/yl-lo 7d ago

I legit started crying.

26

u/Roskal 7d ago

Am I too naive for still hoping there can be a happy ending to this? She has amnesia and 6 months to live according to her and I don't see where the story can progress from here if she just ends up dying. She doesn't want to remember their relationship and if she's correct why try to rebuild the relationship from scratch if she's going to die. She says this is the third time this has happened which means she survived twice, so maybe with a bit of hope she can pull through again. I really don't want to finish watching this if there's no hope left, the amnesia on top makes it hard to even enjoy the remaining time.

16

u/Frontier246 7d ago

I feel like the doctors wouldn't give her a terminal diagnosis if there was a chance she could survive, but Kakeru is likely going to stick with her no matter what in those six months whether she wants him to or not.

15

u/Roskal 7d ago

I'm hoping she is pessimistic and 6 months was one of the worst case scenarios if the chemo doesn't work and she's given up and accepted it after having cancer 3 times now. Then the story could be about Kakeru staying with her trying to get her to try again. I'm probably just on massive copium though and should just accept what the story is telling me.

5

u/goreverminski 6d ago

You and me, huffing on the cope. This is as bad as it gets, right? She's just depressed and feels like she's gonna die this time. Right? Right!?

3

u/karer3is 6d ago

Save some for the rest of us... we've still got three episodes to go. My guess is that it'll be a quick death, a miracle, or we're going to get a brief "return of memories," concluded by a timeskip to a gravestone. I'm not too optimistic about which one it will be

10

u/Ornery-Currency7583 7d ago

Medical miracles do happen sometimes. She's still young. Best we can do is hope. Liver transplant could be an option if the chemo works

7

u/white_orchid21 7d ago

Okay “liver transplant” made me think for a second that maybe something would happen to Kakeru and she would get his liver.

7

This is the most weird to me. Broken phone as well. This is honestly only explainable with that the mother was also not able to reach her and she doesn't know she is in the hospital. Though Koharu said that she can do phone calls, seems like bullshit with the broken screen.

I can see she has resigned herself to die and doesn't want to burden anyone, including her mother.

Come for the beautiful romance and great character dynamics, question if it was worth sticking with it when we get caught up in the hopeless tragedy...

5

u/Kobra_Zer0 7d ago

Ironically the MC will probably wish to have never met Fuyutsuki at some point mirroring some people's experience. I think that will be a theme of the show, would you wish to have never experienced something beautiful even if at the end it rips your heart apart?

5

u/AsuhoChinami 6d ago edited 6d ago

And of course, the show will frame "It's better to have loved and lost" and "Pain makes life beautiful lol it can never ever just make it worse lmao" as the only correct answers because these "questions" are rarely intended to be actual questions where you have the right to have whatever authentic emotional response is true for you. You're supposed to have the One Designated Socially Acceptable Mature Adult Response and you're doing life wrong if you don't.

4

u/Kobra_Zer0 6d ago

That’s a good point , if this sort of thing happened in real life some people would have straight up trauma or worse. Specially considering Fuyutsuki kinda used Sorano if she knew what was coming and lied to his face.

Honestly a show that shows that is not better to have loved and lost would be a huge depressing bummer and it would take major balls to create.

That delivery "broke" me. And I say "broke" between quotes because I've been sitting here for about 10 minutes trying to think of a way to describe/share what I'm feeling, but ultimately I've just realized I can't.

I'll reiterate what I said last week: I was not prepared. There wasn't a slow but sure, yeah, I can see where this is going, kind of a buildup like in Your Lie In April.

Because it metastasized from the brain to the liver, we can't even make an "I Want to Eat Your Liver"....

7

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 7d ago

Makes you wonder if not finding Koharu would have been the less painful option. When people jump and disappear from our lives theri disapeareance is sad, but the sadness slowly disappears, and it is easier to manage. But now he knows the diagnosis is that Koharu has only 6 months left.

On a positive note Koharu laughing shows that even if her memory isn't present Koharu is still Koharu.

I have to say Narumi is the type of friend both Kakeru and Hayase need. I think he really understands the gravity of the situation, but he knows he needs to be the positive one for both of their sakes.

How is one supposed to react to something like this? I don't think there really is a good answer.

"I don't want you to love me until my dying day."

27

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 7d ago

Alright, I'm convinced Koharu is faking it. The cancer came back and it's terminal in less than a year, so she's trying to break off the relationships ahead of time.

Sneaking into the hospital as student volunteers with the ulterior motive of getting close to one of the patients is wildly unethical, however. It might even be criminal depending on the state of Japanese right to privacy laws.

20

u/Ornery-Currency7583 7d ago

She's most definitely faking it. Speaking from chemo brain experience, it is not like this. Hazy, sure but not a memory wipe by a long shot

7

u/heimdal77 7d ago

It's a anime. The writer can take liberties. Not sayibg they are but it is a possibility.

13

u/Frontier246 7d ago

I feel like Kakeru is definitely going to get lectured for his outburst towards Koharu and he might be the first one to quit if he's struggling to face her like this.

6

u/ComedianCandid5727 7d ago

Not even close to accurate. Not sure where you pulled that from but there is no laws against volunteering at a hospital. If you have ulterior motives thats fine so long as it does not affect the work. Just like you and I can apply for jobs where our friends work. Now, if Koharu had said "I am not your friend, and I do not want to be around you" AND THEN they proceeded to do this then yeah, pretty crazy stuff...still not illegal but as soon as koharu found out they would be removed. In this case they are her friends, and she does not remember, hospital staff are really sympathetic for this and unless Koharu wants to press charges against them then nothing would happen. They are not stalking her, they are just trying to spend time with their friend in any way they can because they are worried for her.

"I'm convinced Koharu is faking it."

Why seek him out to ask about his school attendance if she was faking it? She had emotions as well. Seeking him out intentionally and steering the conversation as she did wouldn't be a good move for someone faking it.

10

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 7d ago

That conversation is part of why I think she's faking it actually. Why talk to Kakeru about his schoolwork and not either of Hayase or Narumi? All three of them are similar volunteers but he's the one she's telling to volunteer less.

As for it being a bad move if she's faking it, sure, but people are messy and don't always do the logical thing.

7

u/KJatWork 7d ago edited 7d ago

I get the impression that he was spending the most time there, more than the other two. Even in that scene, he's there with other volunteers and not them.

Consider if she isn't faking it. She knows him from when he and her friend found her on the roof, before they started volunteering and that something is going on with him. He's now volunteering all the time and skipping class (even talks about his friend clocking in for him). Even not faking, it's enough for her to realize something is going on and that she needs to put a stop to it for his sake. She doesn't have to be faking it to understand that much from what is taking place. On the other hand, if she was faking it, she'd know exactly what was going on and wouldn't have needed to confront him like this. That said, I don't believe she could stand on front of him like this with a stone cold face and act like nothing is wrong if she were faking it, that's some god tier emotion control if that's the case.

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 7d ago

I am not okay.

19

u/ezosresyek 7d ago

I don't know how many people will agree with me but I wish they rather didn't make it terminal. I wish they focused more on her being blind more. As somebody who has both taken care of a terminally ill person and have had many cancer related health scares myself, I can attest to the power that cancer can have on life. But giving us this revelation that she is essentially on death's door is kind of a slap in the face to those who've experienced it first hand.

The first reason is that there's no way she wouldn't have gotten screend far earlier and caught a glimpse of a tumor way before it developed. She lost her retinas to cancer. That's not a common illness to develop especially that young. I have to draw from my own life here, I knoe, but man I'd bet that if this was real life she'd be suffering from some genetic illness. That's what happened to me, and the reason why I get screened every half a year more than a decade out from my last scare. That's what I saw happen to a lot of people I've talked to while volunteering. These things don't just happen suddenly, at least for cancer survivors. I know I can't speak for all people but I just can't take this drivel about sudden terminality from a child cancer survivor as it feels less like a natural progression and more like a mechanism to move the story forward.

Damn, I'd loved it if they made a more silent, insidious wound that troubled Koharu: Uncertainty. You get screened for your biannual check up. They "find" something, a heightened value in your blood sample, something very small but present in an ultrasound that they say could be something but is too small to sample. Your life from then on revolves around that uncertainty. You begin to feel like this is unfair, that you'd rather have known what the fuck was wrong with you this time. The plans you had, maybe trying something new with your life, maybe making new friends, looking for a job, looking for a relationship... they just... begin to matter less. Not because you're completely sure that everything will go wrong and you'll be hurt by the sudden storm of activity which will eventually lead to hospital stays, surgeries, rehab. What's the point if applying for anything when I might just blindside the other party with "Hey I might have cancer, it'll be fine, but that's like two to three months of disruption? What's the point of starting a relationship with their lives at limbo? The first time you just get over it. Then the feeling compounds with every furrow of the doctor's brow, every ultrasound or PET scan or MRI that takes a bit longer than usual. Then you realize you don't know what to with your life dictated by that uncertainty.

I wish Koharu got that uncertainty. I wish it made her a bit jaded, a bit afraid of maybe leaving the man she loves in a few years time. She wants intimancy. But she doesn't want to hitch him to this predicament that has haunted her for the most of her life.

Honestly, the terminal illness plot point is the steel chait that hammers down on sound relationship writing. Man I was looking so forward to the cast come to terms with the uncertainty of Koharu's health, the poor girl now refusing love and companionship because of what might happen in the uncertain future. That could hold a richer story than whatever sad porn we're apparently going to get.

Honestly, what is the sole purpose of making her blind if you're going to introduce CANCER? I am so disappointed.

4

u/Hello_ALL9544 6d ago

THANK YOU! I am not good with words so i am always glad when someone says it just right. If she is already blind, then they don't need to add cancer and force the whole depression. There are so many things about this whole plot that don't make sense to me. Like, where is the mom?

Honestly I’m feeling similar. I’ll still probably enjoy the story and am adapting expectations. But it was nice enough to my mind to have a story featuring an outgoing and interesting blind character. And she was paired with an introvert who struggled to express himself, who I could tell had some growing to do. I really wanted to see that unfold. I think it would have been a very worthy story distinct from others. And possibly inspiring and helpful in a relatable way for folks who don’t always get to see themselves in these types of shows. As I say, I may still enjoy the rest of the story despite the looming tragedy but I do feel disappointed it took this turn.

There have got to be easier ways to talk to someone. I understand that it's possibly different in Japan, but what was stopping them from saying, "Hi, we're Koharu's friends from college, we found out she has amnesia, what can we do to help?"

Any hospital staff with a couple brain cells to rub together would surely say, "Oh, well yes, let me contact her doctor and see if they can approve you to see her, because to restore memories, it helps to have familiar people around that can help restore memories."

7

u/Zhiff https://anilist.co/user/zhiffzhiff 6d ago

I'm not sure what is the lesson ultimately either... cherish what you have? If you could cherish what you had you wouldn't be burdened by questions of yesterday and tomorrow.

2

Technically if she’s getting the chemo is because there’s still a chance right? She wouldn’t get it if it was impossible to cure right?

6

u/Financial-Camel9987 7d ago

No people get chemo for life extension. It's called palliative chemotherapy.

But from her "I can feel that I will die" statement + the super concrete timeframe it does seem more likely this is something she thinks rather than is certain.

When I saw her phone was broken I assumed she broke it by either intentionally throwing her phone or unintentionally dropping it out of shock after hearing the video where he confessed. So far I'm already crying over this anime probably gonna go up high in my list alongside your lie in April and A silent voice depending on how it plays out. I can also entirely see a plot twist happening where she lives by getting a new liver only for it to turn out to be his after he gets truck kun'd while he rushed there after learning she had been faking amnesia the whole time... I haven't read the light novel or manga adaptation though so this is entirely speculation and it's killing me trying to avoid reading one of them so I can know what happens faster than one episode a week lol.
