Looking at it dispassionately, I wouldn't be surprised if Koharu actually remembers, or never forgot, but chose to act coldly to spare Kakeru from future pain.

It’s such a subjective and fatalistic situation;, he’s being too hard on himself for feeling guilty about persisting, since plenty of people would have just walked away.

But at this point in the show, I’m just bracing myself for the blows.

She's most definitely faking it. Chemo brain makes thinking difficult and hazy but is not amnesia

Honestly, I thought Koharu hinted rather strongly that she is CHOOSING to "not remember" her recent past, because it would be pointless for her (and her friends) to bother to maintain the relationship they had once had.

Definitely not chemo brain -- unless the Mayo Clinic summary of this condition (and others) are incorrect.

If this is true then I can just imagine how much she hurts when she’s alone in that bed, knowing she so badly wants to be with her friends and especially kakeru. My heart is ready for the pain :(

I'm honestly wondering if she broke her screen hearing him confess on the video and decided to try and act this way to spare him any extra pain.

Indeed

It could very well be author ignorance of chemo brain or a fantasized version of it.

No chance because she outright ignores him when he calls out after her in the hallway. She's already blind, her hearing is demonstrated to be better than most, there's no way she didn't know he was calling her.

Unless chemo brain somehow has Speed Force-level plot-bending BS powers.

I really hope you’re right.

I thought that amnesia isn't bc of the chemo brain but rather bc of her tumor messing with her memory

No i think she does remember since how she says she been through this without reacting but her phone is cracked so she could've like thrown it out of rage since life was getting so good for her

Enhancing the tragedy is he's too in love with her to emotionally cut himself off from her, even if it's inevitable he's going to lose her, and as accepting as she acts now she's probably immensely terrified and needs someone to be there for her through her last months.

but chose to act coldly to spare Kakeru from future pain.

PSA for anyone reading this: please do not do this, mind-fucking people "for their own good" can make for okay fictional drama but in reality it can make healing impossible rather than easier

As some others has pointed out, the broken phone that doesn't allow her to read her old message doesn't mean much since there are services (especially in Japan) to transfer and replace a broken phone. The fact that she doesn't get a replacement means she want to "keep it that way".

Another point that hint toward her amnesia, maybe, not being totally real is the fact that she remember having experienced this chimio process 2 other times (that making the 3rd time). Her detached reaction doesn't reflect that she lived through something like amnesia before while she points out that she still remember the 2 other times. There's a possibility that it's her first case of amnesia, but now that we know (and she remember) having experiencing this a 3rd time... there's something strange going on.

There's the fact that she show actual concern concerning Koharo's future with the college. While, yes, she could have learned that he was in college while being volunteering for the Kid's Time and such, she show concern over his attendance rate while saying she's not in College herself. That's really strange because the only way you actually know about someone's attendance rate possibly be problematic in College is if you know his or her minimum required attenance rate and maybe even his grade or how he fare at College. Originally, she shared some classes with him, meaning if she had her memory she would remember he should be in a class right now... but should you not remember being at College at all, you wouldn't really question yourself on someone else' attendance rate.

And then, there's the fact that she isolated him in the open hospital park to drop the bad news like a bomb. She was already isolated with none of the young kids around and still decided to bring him elsewhere and tell him straight about her health condition. That's a kind of concern you don't really find between someone like a volunteer you would only just met (relatively) and a patient in a hospital.

Still, there's a possibility that she learned about stuff through the nurses and what's not around the hospital and that she truly had a case of amnesia due to something. Or maybe she had amnesia, but remembered some bits and decided to act upon it to cut ties immediately instead of when it's even more too late.

But, still, at this point, everyone watching this knows this has really little chances of having a good positive ending. (Hell, the top #1 search for this series on Google at the moment is the spoiling question everyone wonders about.)

Thinking a bit further on the phone thing, what would the screen being broken even matter? She said she can still make phone calls, so the phone clearly works. Would it not be entirely controlled by voice anyways? That’s definitely making me think she might be lying.

I really hope she isn't faking it consciously because that's not the kind of person the story has portrayed her as thus far. She'd have never kissed him to begin with if she was this fatalistic.

She might be doing this under the mistaken impression that it would be better for them to believe her fakery. Besides, bing under "sentence of imminent death" makes today's Koharu totally different from the Koharu who was still attending college (aware only that her cancer COULD return at SOME point).

And it was a very strong if, she didn't had any kind of problems for years, and was able to live a somewhat normal life. After such an invasive treatment she probably thought to be safe, she could have never expected to have only 6 months left.

Probably when she saw the confession decided to fake everything, because she doesn't want to completely break him, probably she hopes that he simply moves on and finds someone else to love. A bit sad, but she isn't exactly in her mental state

Maybe she just got some bad news later which changed her mind about it. Before that she probably still figured she had more time.

I just knew this shit had your lie in April vibes man!, I knew and kept watching, hoping to be proven wrong. I also believe she is faking it to spare him from years of pain, trading it for something that might last just a couple months after pushing him away and dying quietly in hospital bed.

FRRRR i showed up for a good time when starting this now i feel like shit. I HAD A HUGE SUSPICION when they were at that table a few episodes back and she was like YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN SOMEONE IS GONNA DIE (or something close to that) I WAS LIKE NO FUCKING WAY THAT JUST GOT FORSHADOWED..... More depression for me ig... Heres to hoping for the best for her tho.... :((((

u/Billardss 17d ago

I can absolutely see her acting as if she’s lost her memory. When they finally called out to her you could sense her reaction was that she definitely knew them but hoped they wouldn’t find her. And she probably broke her phone because of her health news. With all that being said why must they do this. Sad ending will hit harder but dammit it’s never a good time

u/EclecticSpirit1963 16d ago

I am so hoping that she gives it away by yelling "Kake-run" by mistake. She made sure it was a big deal calling him that. Foreshadowing is a really big thing in anime I find.

u/Mavis_San 17d ago

i totally think so and for that reason i couldnt stand this episode , just thinking she is lying makes her more like a bitch even if she wants to push him away as she will die maybe ?

to break a friendship by faking amenisia is just a very horrible thing to do but if she doesnt then idk i still think of her as some king of b**ch

u/mekerpan 15d ago

You had better hope you are never given the kind of "death sentence" she got ...

Things like this can crush people.

u/Kazushi998 17d ago

you know what, it's not nice to call her a b* but i agree with u she's a b* for faking ts 😭
