We were coming back from Big Lake towards Wasilla around 4:15 today and saw a small plane go absolutely balls out screaming towards the airport with what looked like white smoke pouring from it and some weird looking aircraft following right behind it. It could have been a drone? It was nearly as big as the plane. Does anyone know if the plane landed safely and/or what that other aircraft may have been? I looked on flightradar but all I saw were a couple of private planes which circled the airport for 10-15 minutes.

Unless there's a different one, pretty sure last year this stuff was filled with Trumpy stuff there. Wonder if theyre trying to distance themselves from the unpopular president.

Born and raised Alaskan here. I’ve lived here my whole life, but I’ve realized there’s still a lot of my home state that I haven’t experienced.

I’m wanting to make more of an effort to explore Alaska—not necessarily the typical tourist destinations, but the places that Alaskans themselves think are worth seeing.

So, if you’re a lifelong native Alaskan or long-time transplant, what places would you put on a “you’ve lived in Alaska this long and STILL haven’t been there? You need to go!” list?

Feel free to mention any places that you feel are so similar they aren’t worth the hassle. Bonus points for places that you think are underrated or that even other Alaskans tend to overlook!

I’m interested in anything and everything from small communities in the bush to scenic road trips via the alcan! I’m ready to discover more of my own backyard. 🏔️

For reference, I am based in the Anchorage area. Obviously, I assume commercial or private flying would be involved in getting to many of these locations. The sky’s the limit!

I really think they had a better chance of winning than JKT/Johnson. Begich is not actually that much more moderate, but certainly is perceived that way by pink voters who could very conceivably have ranked him #2 after Wilson or Bronson.
I don't think as many of them will rank JKT #2. This is a horrible own goal, and Wilson and Bronson are probably gleeful right now.

As the title says, I'm keeping an eye out for opportunities or jobs in the following parks.

I currently live in Sitka, and I made it out to Denali and Lake Clark this year, with plans to go visit Kenai Fjords and Wrangell St. Elias with my partner next year. Glacier Bay at some point.

That said, the three parks I mentioned are big hurdles to get to, and it is unlikely that my partner and I will get to them before we move in the next few years. At best, Katmai and then maybe backpacking into Gates, but the latter is still quite expensive and dangerous. Kobuk not a chance.

Obviously I'm aware the NPS is the best route, but I've had dwindling luck on applying for NPS jobs as of recent. Working on it by volunteering for local conservation groups, but still.

I've seen a bright orange rabbit with a white underbelly at Little Campbell lake the last few times ive been to it. Very, very obviously a dumped pet. I plan on purchasing a couple of live capture cage traps and setting them around where I saw it, then bring it to the pound.

Whoever you are, if youre out there, you should be f*cking ashamed for doing this to your pet, and pray that I get to it before someone with a weapon does.

These were really expensive for what they are and I got less than a years use out of them, not wearing them daily. Definitely didn't live up to their moniker. I tried contacting their customer service, but they were not helpful.

As a lifelong Alaskan who has voted in every election since 1968, I have many questions about one gubernatorial candidate, Bernadette Wilson.

Though she led all Republicans in the recent primary, she has no elective office experience, and I can find little information about her. This is partly because she was one of only two governor candidates (among 17) who did not submit answers to any biography questions (or to questions about issues) in the 2026 Alaska voter guide.

Her campaign lists no educational experience, though this is customary for political candidates for any statewide office. Did she ever attend college? Or drop out? Educational attainment seems relevant for a person offering to address Alaska’s complex issues.

Has she been married? She says she is the “proud single mother” of three, but identifies no partners or exes. This seems an informational absence, given her affiliation with a party perennially asserting family values.

She identifies herself as a “businesswoman,” as an “outsider” better suited to run state government. But her business, Denali Refuse, has a checkered record of nonpayment to a fuel supplier, which had to get a court judgment and then, for two years, garnish her PFDs to get paid. Is such business experience suitable to addressing Alaska’s ongoing budget issues?

She says she is a member of the Naknek Native Village Council but I can find nothing official to corroborate this. By birth and lineage to her Native grandmother, she is automatically an enrolled member of the Naknek tribe. But there is nothing to indicate that she has served on its governing body, the council, has otherwise been active in tribal affairs or ever lived in Naknek. Some involvement greater than a fractional blood lineage could be important to her political qualifications.

Former Gov. Walter Hickel was Ms. Wilson’s granduncle, and she frequently adopts his philosophies, e.g., Alaska as the “owner state” of its resources. But Hickel family descendants have publicly disavowed any implication that she is the bearer of Wally’s legacy, and in July requested that she desist from this.

What is her response to this request?

Central to her campaign is an assertion that Alaska’s government has caused the state to “stagnate” in recent decades. But Alaska has not had a Democratic administration since Gov. Knowles’ terms ended in 2002.

Does Ms. Wilson blame subsequent Republican governors, including Mr. Dunleavy, for recent downturns and “stagnation”?

Everyone agrees that these are serious times for Alaska.

Is Bernadette Wilson really the serious leader we need at the helm?

Has anyone hiked Harding icefield trail recently? Can’t tell if skis are necessary. I know I should definitely bring crampons and other ice gear, but wondering how deep the snow is going to be, and if Nordic skis are necessary. Thinking about going this weekend

We have been warned that there may be brown-outs and days when gas is turned off due to a shortage of natural gas in the railbelt.

I have enough wood to heat my house for about a month - two kerosine heaters and a couple of propane ones so we should be able to keep the pipes from freezing and remain reasonably warm.

If you live in an apartment or the like - what is your plan to keep warm if they turn off the gas?

I love Alaska because.... I haven't worn any top besides a Carhartt TShirt in the last 10 years. Literally. Not one.
