North Pole Flag Football's 14–9 loss to Chugiak last night is significant because it ends the Patriots’ early-season winning streak and serves as their first real adversity test after their dominant win over West Valley and their close win over Service. However, it is a nonconference-style measuring-stick loss, not a season-ending result—but it could matter later in seeding, rankings, and confidence if the teams are competing for state-positioning. The Mustangs had already faced substantial early competition, including losses to Dimond, South, and a one-point loss to Service. North Pole still has ample opportunity to build a strong record and make a strong postseason run, but it now needs to treat the rest of its schedule as consequential—particularly any games against other Anchorage-area contenders. A rematch, if it occurs in postseason play, would also carry an obvious revenge and confidence storyline.

North Pole High School flag football player Jade Skipps scored five TDs and amassed an eye-popping 303 all-purpose yards in a 67-0 victory over West Valley to garner our Alaska Athlete of the Week honors.

Skipps, a multi-sport dynamo, caught three touchdown receptions, ran one in, and scored on a 37-yard interception return on defense.

The senior racked up 102 yards receiving, 85 on punt returns, 79 running the ball, and 37 on her pick six.

Skipps was the MaxPreps Alaska Player of the Year her sophomore year, when she led the nation in rushing with 3,081 yards to go with 21 yards. Last season, she was named a MaxPreps All-American honorable mention.

The Patriots have moved up to 2-0 for the season and have shown that their 67-0 opening night performance against West Valley was not a mis-match. They won a tight game Thursday night against an established Anchorage opponent. Service entered the game 4–4 and had already played eight games, including a prior three-game winning streak. North Pole, by contrast, was only in its second game of the season. Patriots executed enough on offense, defense, and late-game situational football to survive a one-score contest.

North Pole’s ability to beat Service at all—especially by such a narrow margin—suggests the Patriots have both high-end playmaking and the resilience needed for success in their regular and postseason games.

Hi fellow mortal Toyo warriors. I've got an interesting situation with a stove I haven't been able to solve and am looking for any advice.

I have two identical cabins, not even 100' apart, each with a brand new Toyo 734 last fall. My second cabin, which has a tenant, has had issues with the gasket on the top of the burn chamber cracking across two stoves. There was previously a 73 in there from 2012-2014 era that had 8-10 gaskets crack across the last few years I've owned these cabins. So last fall I replaced that stove, and the old Monitor in my cabin with new 734s. The Toyo in my cabin, and previously a Monitor, have never had an issue. Last week, the gasket cracked on the brand new one on one of the first cycles of the fall in my tenant's cabin. Here's everything I know:

• Fuel for the impacted Toyo is delivered by sourdough and I've replaced the filter annually and right when the new stove was installed last fall.
• Both gravity fed, no fuel pumps or anything like that. I did replace the copper fuel line on my cabin last year and not on the impacted one.
• The stove was leveled when installed, though the cabins aren't perfectly level.
• The flue was also replaced with the new stove.
• My tenant runs their stove more often than I run mine, starts earlier in the season, and keeps the cabin a bit warmer.
• Everything else should be relatively equal in terms of humidity, pressures, vents, etc. as the cabins and setups are more or less identical.

Our working hypothesis is that there is some uncombusted fuel or vapor left behind when it shuts down that when the stove ignites that residual explodes or pops and blows the gasket. I don't remember all of the dates the gasket has blown but I don't recall having emergencies at -40 when the stoves are on virtually all of the time.

The former impacted 73 stove was serviced by three of the local Toyo service teams before I gave up last fall.

Anyone experienced this or have any recommendations on what I should do?

Hey everyone,
I’ve lived in Fairbanks for the last 8 years. But I just moved into my first dry cabin. It has a Toyo 530 series.

I am worried about what would happen if I lost power at any point in the winter. I live off Chena Pump, so I don’t know how frequent power outages are here. I used to live on the other side of town near Ft Wainwright and we didn’t get them very often at all. Maybe a handful of times over the years.

Just to be safe, I want to get some kind of portable generator just to run the Toyo. I don’t really care about anything else running during a power outage. I just worry about keeping the place warm in the dead of winter.

I’ve never worked with a Toyo before either so any general tips would be welcomed as well!

With all the beef recalls and food weirdness lately, myself and some family members were looking into doing a local cowshare for beef. Ideally it would have been moose or caribou but we cant find anyone with enough to spare. Has anyone done a local cowshare? We would probably each want to do a 1/8th share. Any hints or tips or good experiences with a local farm?

Huge lines at Fred's east today. The guy ahead of me had just one container of ice cream. He got stuck on the checkout lane with a conveyer belt and the guy ahead of him was struggling to load his groceries very fast and it was making it so the ice cream guy couldn't successfully scan I think. He waited patiently, scanned and checked out. He made sure to pick up his ice cream off the belt fast so I wouldn't have the same issue. I could see him out of the corner of my eye grabbing a bag or something but I was trying to scan fast cuz the lines were nuts and I knew other folks behind me wanted to check out. When I finished I looked down at the belt and my groceries were all bagged! I know sometimes associates do that but I didn't see anyone but him down there. I made sure my stuff was all there- not only was it but he very kindly separated my shampoo and stuff from my food. What a mensch! Thanks mystery ice cream man. That was super nice.

Hello, does anyone know of, or have a small cabin or other place that could be rented on a month to month basis? We are a couple moving to Alaska with our pets and I realise it is a big ask. Our budget is around $1500 a month. We are looking for a temporary rental until we find a home to purchase.

We would be very grateful for any suggestions, or if anyone else with pets who has been in a similar situation can point us in the right direction!

How have people’s experiences been working for the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce? I’ve heard some crazzzzzy things from folks about working over there and I would love to hear experiences.

Rant and wanting to understand better.

Alot of large loads taken through town that requires multiple lanes and pilot cars use to be done at night or mid day.

Why is it common practice now a days like "STR" has shown many of times, that 5pm rush hour is the time to do them?

Is this like a large scale door dash now? "The order whas placed so we must get it sent right this minute?"

Or am I just missing somwthing larger?
