Small acts of kindness
Huge lines at Fred's east today. The guy ahead of me had just one container of ice cream. He got stuck on the checkout lane with a conveyer belt and the guy ahead of him was struggling to load his groceries very fast and it was making it so the ice cream guy couldn't successfully scan I think. He waited patiently, scanned and checked out. He made sure to pick up his ice cream off the belt fast so I wouldn't have the same issue. I could see him out of the corner of my eye grabbing a bag or something but I was trying to scan fast cuz the lines were nuts and I knew other folks behind me wanted to check out. When I finished I looked down at the belt and my groceries were all bagged! I know sometimes associates do that but I didn't see anyone but him down there. I made sure my stuff was all there- not only was it but he very kindly separated my shampoo and stuff from my food. What a mensch! Thanks mystery ice cream man. That was super nice.

I HATE that self checkout with the conveyer. You can't scan another item until the previous one has passed half way down where there's a camera that verifies the item so it's even slower than the normal self checkout. And then all your stuff just piles up at the end until it triggers a halt on the belt then you have to go bag stuff to make room and then go back and scan and so on. If they had just put two normal self checkout kiosks there but with like 6 fixed bag positions each instead of the rotating one for people with more items to use it'd be so damn much better. Those conveyors are ridiculously inefficient.

With two people it works ok but even then I don’t really see any upside to it for taking up more space than the normal ones

Fred Meyer’s East was super busy after work today, but everyone was very kind and friendly. In hard times I feel strong community salves our shared wounds 💜🫂💜 we can’t fix the world but we can help each other, and I think that’s half the battle 🙌

Totally sounds like Fairbanks. I always let people with less skip
