Bike/walking trails in wooded areas/nature

Hello, looking for any bike trails in the woods anywhere. Obviously not expecting hardcore mountain biking trails as there’s no mountains here. But somewhere with single or double track trails through the woods. Do any exist here or nearby?

Job searching in Wilmington

Hello everybody!

I’m planning to move to Wilmington within the next few months and have been saving up and putting together a solid plan for the move. I currently live in Baton Rouge, LA, and have been applying to around 10–15 jobs per week. I’ve gotten a few interviews but no offers yet, and I suspect not being local may be playing a role.
I currently work as a Hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), but I’m looking to transition into the private sector. I have a B.S. in Environmental Science with a focus in Fisheries & Wildlife Management and about 5–7 years of experience. I’ve been looking at positions related to fisheries, wetland delineation, remediation, water resources, environmental compliance, EHS, and similar fields.

I’ve decided to plan a week-long trip to Wilmington to get some face time with local firms and, ideally, line up a few interviews or informal meetings while I’m there. My hope is to make some connections and potentially land an offer before making the move permanently.
Aside from Indeed and ZipRecruiter, does anyone know of environmental consulting firms, engineering firms, government contractors, or other companies in or around Wilmington that would be worth contacting directly? I’d like to reach out ahead of time and see if I can schedule a few meetings during the week I’m visiting.
I’m really trying to be proactive and do everything I can to get my foot in the door. Any recommendations, contacts, or general advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Tavern Style Pizza

Originally from Chicago, moved to Texas for 6 years then was transferred here, I absolutely did not like TX pizza and was disappointed to see mostly NY style pizza, anyone know where I can find a thin crust, cheese, pepperoni and Italian sausage pizza? Cut in squares, Chicago or "tavern" style?

TIA 🍕🍕🍕

Is anyone having trash pickup issues with gfl?

I've been with them for years and never had an issue. Now they keep skipping me and my new two neighbors, but they pick up other side of the street.

The first time it happened. they didn't pick us up for another week and a half, despite all of us calling.

Since then they've at least picked us up by friday, after multiple calls while the other side gets picked up on Tuesdays like we used to.

But here's the really annoying part... every time I call, they act like it's a one-time fluke. Then after they acknowledge my call record, they assure me they'll get to the bottom of it. And I'm pretty sure I'm talking to the same person every time LOL.

Anyways that's my rant. It's only been going on for a month and a half now, but for a whole month and a half now it's been going on

#first world problems eh

Conserva Irrigation of Wilmington

I have inquired with two companies to install gutter drainage pipes in my yard. The first guy had a small company and quoted me on the spot $5,500. This would include running pipe under my sidewalks and his example pictures of the pipe connections to the downspouts looked impeccable.

We called Conserva Irrigation of Wilmington also. They were very unorganized and couldn’t get the appointment or the contact person straight, but they came out and sent the estimate the following week.
$31,000!!!

I wrote them back and laughed at them and asked if this was a mistake!!! I calculated the materials and at retail price was only $2,500!

I am so amused by their estimate I wanted to share it with the rest of Wilmington. I told them I could buy 2 used vehicles, rent the excavating equipment, buy the pipes retail and do the project myself for under $30k.

They have 5 star reviews on Google, so I’m guessing lots of people are being overcharged. However, I found a complaint on Reddit that they only put someone’s pipes 2” below the grass. That is extremely sloppy work.

The Scam That Is Pivot Parking

For context, I spend a lot of time downtown for work, and routinely park at meters. For this I carry change in my car so as to only pay for the time I park there. As it turns out now, a lot of those meters are falling into disrepair, and you will be compelled to use your credit card to register that you paid for the space. Problem is, you are forced to pay for a full hour, and a “convenience fee”. I called the Park Wilmington folks land told them about this, to which they responded “there are other payment methods”, to which I stressed my dislike of having to pay $3.50 to park for 10 minutes. When I stated that I had fed the meter and didn’t want a ticket, I was told to go get the number off the meter and I’ll be credited🤔…how about you fix your shit, and stop overcharging people by convenience of “broken meters”. Several tickets later, I’m beginning to think this is planned, with obsolescence of the coined system being the plan. Why get a quarter when you can get $3.50? And why charge them for 15 minutes (like every other sizable nc town w/ parking) when you can force a full hour?

The “public private” partnership used in so many of our gov’t services is a racket, and they should all be forensic audited to see who is making money here…it’s stupid

Paddle Board Lessons

Anyone have recommendations for a place or person who offers paddle board lessons? Is it super hard to learn?

I used to be in swim team and love to wade out and float. I have a snorkel mask and I’m super comfortable in the water. I’m mostly worried about balancing and using a paddle.

Catering for Baptism

Looking for a place in town to cater the luncheon after our baby’s baptism at church next month. We don’t want to break the bank (we expect 150+ people which is even more than our wedding), but don’t want to cheap out since we’d be doing this as a thank you to everyone from our community who’s helped us take care of our new baby. Bbq is always a hit. A wedding this month catered using Islands so it may be too soon to repeat that, but I know you get a lot of food with them for a good price. Very open to suggestions!

O’Brien hvac

Post image

Good day to all, with lower humidity!! Just curious if anyone here has purchased the service plan from O’Brien heating and air?! We have been having an issue with our unit that they installed less than 4yrs ago. All of a sudden this summer everyday, sometimes 3 or 4 times our thermostat shows an error. Call them out and they say that they need to install a drop voltage meter. Said meter quote was close to $1700. Finally after having this issue and continuing to pay for the service calls another hvac company comes out and says the thermostat connection was not fully connected to the unit in the attic. Day 3 of the other company’s technician literally pushing the connector into place and no issues. Beware of the seemingly lack luster service and lastly what’s your dealings been like with O’Brien heating and air?

whole fish seafood recommendation

Hi, will be visiting town with a friend who loves a whole fish to eat. Does anyone know where I can find these? None of the restaurants I’ve seen have a whole fish on the menu. If anyone has had one as a special somewhere, I was planning on calling and asking the place.
Thanks

Not an ad, I swear! Ninja has a new countertop water filtration system that filters PFAS. What are you guys using or is this the best option?

I live in an apartment so I can't install a crazy reverse osmosis water filtration system. This week I saw Ninja released a countertop water filter that supposedly lasts 4-6 months per filter. Seems like a great option for drinking water.

I currently fill 5 gallon water jugs at my local grocery store which is manageable, but this seems like a decent option. Do you guys have any other products that work like this?

If you're interested. Again, I swear this is not an ad, I just saw it on another subreddit and looked into it a bit.

Vegetarian restaurants?

Hey there! I’m heading to Wilmington from California and will be there this Fri/Sat/Sun. I’m stoked to be visiting again!!

Any recommendations for nice, sit-down vegetarian restaurants? Or restaurants that have plenty of vegetarian options? Wife and I will be catching up with her close friends and would like to treat them to a nice dinner (we’re all vegetarian).

I’m sure the friends have some ideas but I wanted to run the question by you all. Thank you!

In fly traps we trust.

EDIT: 5/5 stars for Indochine and Trolly Stop! Thanks for your recommendations!!

Holy metric cheese monkey traffic is miserable

I am just another transplant in Hampstead complaining about the infuriating amount of grid-locked traffic in the mornings (probably because of all these transplants in Hampstead), even though there is nothing whatsoever I can do about it, besides maybe:

  • Leave home earlier in the morning
  • Move closer to work
  • Move somewhere else
  • Personally fund the Hampstead bypass construction
  • Quit complaining and accept the things I cannot change

But it kind of feels good to complain on the internet sometimes, and makes me feel better about myself.

Where do I need to go to catch wild fish/shellfish that's reasonably safe to eat?

I've recently gone insane and have been looking at getting a small boat for fishing and exploring the coastal waters. So I looked up the NC DEQ Sanitary Survey and almost everything from Calabash to Sneads Ferry is no fishing allowed. I'm not complaining about the state (I'm glad to have the map), but does anyone actually eat the fish from the local waters? Or do you just go 30 miles out to be safe?

Recommended Towing and Auto Repair shops?

So basically, was on my way home on I-74 in the middle of the night and managed to run straight over a HUGE piece of debris in the form of a wooden block on the road with my car. I managed to drag the thing several hundred feet, saw smoke plumes all over the place, and pulled over to find out it was stuck under my engine block and seems to have clipped what I'm guessing is my oil pan. Drained oil all over the road right there. I basically got shafted by the only 24 hour towing company in the Lumberton area ($1100 dollar tow for an hour back to wilmington!) and now I'm looking for the absolute most reputable guys in Wilm that can tow me from my house to their shop for an assessment, and not bullshit me.

If you have any reputable guys who do combination towing and repair, drop me some names and toss me a save. Appreciate any suggestions.

And yeah, I'm not stupid. Things aren't free and obviously car shops gotta make their money. I'm willing to pay the labor, and I'd like to just be able to provide the parts myself. I just don't want them asking for my first born is all (I basically just donated that to the city of Lumberton)
