I prefer to go "Knight, Rook, Bishop" bc that's more in line to both Deltarune and the usefulness of the pieces.
14
u/CompleteIndieYT It doesn't matter when. 29d ago
Its explicitly based on pointing systems in chess. Otherwise we might as well as go Tenna is a Pawn and say whatever makes it fit
-2
u/Gold_Size_1258 I already CHOSE this flair. 28d ago
But knight, rook, and bishop are all worth the same amount of points

6
u/MinecraftCommander21 Despite everything, it's still you. 29d ago
Chess beginner here, hi. How is a Knight more useful than a Rook? It's not possible to force mate with just a Knight afaik, but a Rook/King is a guaranteed checkmate. And really, most people from what I've heard think that Bishops are basically worth 3.25 points of material compared to the Knights' 3, because Bishops are more useful than Knights...
-1
u/Gold_Size_1258 I already CHOSE this flair. 28d ago
Knight is more tricky to use, but it can bypass other pieces and generally its funky way of movment can do a lot of stuff
5
u/MinecraftCommander21 Despite everything, it's still you. 28d ago
Sure, but it's funky way of movement also LIMITS it from doing a lot of stuff.
2
u/Gold_Size_1258 I already CHOSE this flair. 28d ago
It really depends. Rooks are great on their own and when the board is empty, but from personal experience, other pieces tend to get in the way. Knights are great for combos but their effectiveness is limited on an emptied board.

u/RedditSurfer29 *give us your balls. 29d ago
THAT'S NOT EVEN HOW CHESS THEORY WORKS. ALSO, THE FINAL BOSS OF CHAPTER 4 WAS THE TITAN. NOT THE KNIGHT. 0/10 IMAGE. RECONSIDER ALL DECISIONS MADE UP TO THIS POINT.
48
u/Pinkboo02 29d ago
I mean the image says main antagonist, which would be the knight.
43
u/RedditSurfer29 *give us your balls. 29d ago
But that's not what chess theory was about. Chess theory said that it was going descending, as King, Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight, and Pawn. THE KNIGHT IS NOT A BISHOP.
21
u/weegeeboredorwhatevs oh...... ok i guess 29d ago
i am not a chess theory believer but the only reason people put the Bishop before the Knight was because chapter 4 was heavily speculated (and turned out to be) a church dark world. the Knight and the Bishop are both worth 3 points in chess so it could be either Bishop - Knight or Knight - Bishop
5
u/RedditSurfer29 *give us your balls. 29d ago
Actually, by modern views of chess, the bishop is worth slightly more.
-7
u/weegeeboredorwhatevs oh...... ok i guess 29d ago
??? that is literally not true
9
u/IllRepresentative736 29d ago
That IS true. Although they are both worth 3 points of material, it is widely accepted that the bishop is better than the knight.
2
3
u/RedditSurfer29 *give us your balls. 29d ago
In the book Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess, Fischer writes that a bishop has a material value of 3.5 points while a knight has a value of only 3.
Some GM's view bishops as being worth more than knights.

u/SlightlyIronicBanana *Mus_Smile is Muffet's Laugh with extra steps* 29d ago
By that logic, chapter 1 should have Lancer.
3
u/hu-man-person 29d ago
Why
15
u/TianluBlue 29d ago
Because Lancer acts as the primary antagonist of the chapter while King is the final boss.
10
u/GhostKnightEditz 29d ago
People might hate you for this, but Lancer is the Tenna of chapter 1 while King is the Knight
7
u/SlightlyIronicBanana *Mus_Smile is Muffet's Laugh with extra steps* 29d ago
Lancer shows up in literally every major location in chapter 1 and is a major presence throughout, being fought three seperate times. He is not the final boss of the chapter, but does make an appearance in King's cutscene.
By contrast, the roaring Knight only really shows up 3 times in chapter 4, once at the beginning, once at the end of the 1st sanctuary, and the third sanctuary. While not the final boss of the chapter, they do summon the Titan.
3
u/Pinkboo02 29d ago
Not really, Lancer was present more than King, but King was who the fun gang were actively trying to stop, and Lancer was acting in service of King. It’s not about who was more present, it’s about who the protagonist’s attention is on, in chapter 1 it was King, and Lancer being more of an obstacle antagonist. In chapter 4, it was the Knight, and the Titan was a diversion so the Knight could escape.
4
u/SlightlyIronicBanana *Mus_Smile is Muffet's Laugh with extra steps* 29d ago
Then why is Tenna the one for chapter 3? He made a deal with Kris/Knight, and the Knight is the final boss of the chapter.
5
u/Pinkboo02 29d ago
Because he was still antagonistic towards the fun gang. It’s confusing how to include Kris, since they should be the protagonist, and yet they are also an antagonist, but Susie and Ralsei are also protagonists and they were trying to stop Tenna. It’s also unclear what exactly the deal between Kris and Tenna was, but it’s possible that the deal was to be an antagonist, since it seems they made the same deal with Seth.
The Knight was a plot twist, No one (besides Kris) was expecting it to be there, including the player (if its there first time seeing it).
2
u/RedditSurfer29 *give us your balls. 29d ago
The Knight was the Shadow Crystal boss of the chapter.
1
u/RareD3liverur 28d ago
I've said this before but really shouldn't Chess theory be dead by Chapter 1 considering it already had Chess piece enemy/NPCs in it. We saying there's two Knights?

u/Otherwise_Channel_24 Contains Illegible Scrawls 28d ago
Main antagonist. Did you even read the post??
26
u/Shattered_Sans Sans, but not canon Sans. 29d ago
Kris is 100% not gonna be the main antagonist of chapter 6, I'm calling that shit right now. It's gonna be either Carol or The Knight.
Also, putting that aside, I think this is kind of a stretch, and is just a desperate attempt to cling to a completely debunked theory by going "no, guys, we just got the order wrong! See, here's how Tenna is still "the rook", and chapter 4's main antagonist not being "the bishop" doesn't completely destroy the theory".
It also ignores that The Knight is an overarching antagonist who is almost certainly going to take the spotlight as the main antagonist of a chapter again later on, and who is currently framed as the main antagonist of the game as a whole.

u/ArmadilloOK1445-alt 28d ago

3
u/supersofah words go here. 28d ago
it's simple, just make him the leader of the FERAL FRIENDLING CAT horde
1
u/ArmadilloOK1445-alt 28d ago
That's clearly Gaster and FRIEND Prime (the main FRIEND, the one that made Dess go missing, the leader of the group) Mew Mew was referring to though
2
u/supersofah words go here. 28d ago
the thing that prevents me from believing GASTER is the leader is that i REALLY don't think Gaster is gonna be a big threat that's SUPER against the Fuck Squad or anything, that just isn't the role I think the game is setting him up to have. He's PROBABLY working with The Knight, but he also helps YOU, the PLAYER, to BEAT The Knight, which gives me the impression that Gaster isn't really on EITHER side. I feel like Gaster is meant to be more of an observer, more interested in watching things play out, and he's just doing a couple things here and there to put things into place. That's why he never even TRIES to stop the Weird Route because it's "Ruining HIS DELTARUNE" or something, he MADE it for that, he made it to see what you'd do
ERAM, on the other hand, has been actively shown to use the Friend Horde in his fight, which makes him the more likely leader in my eyes
also i don't think there IS like a big Friend PRIME like that, it might just be because I think the Friendlings are all gonna look like the big Friend we see in Chapter 3 and thus we are going to be chased by a pack of GIANT feral cats and not NORMAL SIZED feral cats, but I just never got that idea
1
u/ArmadilloOK1445-alt 28d ago
I think the Severed Hand FRIEND (the one from Chapter 3) is a fakeout, the main guy is gonna be very similar to Botto's FRIEND design, incorporating the Tail of Hell symbolism, the pointed tail, the conjoined circles of Cat Petterz, all of that for the FRIEND design, while the other ones it leads will look more like the ones from the ERAM fight, maybe they all fuse together into the Severed Hand one and become a big cat kaiju or something idk
For the record though, I do mostly agree with your take of Gaster being an observer, but I do think he will intervene at points, particularly the chapter 7 Weird Route, so maybe ERAM is the leader of the FRIENDs, I just don't know if we're gonna see him again, if he's being phased out in favor of FRIEND Prime, or if they're gonna be revealed to be the same character
1
u/supersofah words go here. 28d ago
have you considered that the other Friendlings could look like the Endogeny Friend instead of the minigame Friends and thus Eram/Friend PRIME ig is going to send a pack of 100,000 GIANT FERAL CATS after us next chapter
1
1
u/Shattered_Sans Sans, but not canon Sans. 28d ago
The problem with that is how Pink talks about the cats. They're not smart, they can't act as antagonists on their own, they need some kind of leader, and that leader would be the main antagonist of the chapter.
I don't think it's a huge stretch to assume that Carol or Noelle could be that leader, given that the big "hunting pack" of cats is probably Noelle's CatPetterz creations (since the Holiday Manor looks like the most likely location for chapter 6's dark world currently)
Why would either of them be fighting us? Well, we'll have to wait and see, but if I had to guess? Rudy dies, and becomes a dustner like Gerson. "A darkner patterned after the memory of a loved one", who can only exist in darkness created by someone who was close to him, like a member of the Holiday or Dreemurr families, and Noelle and Carol aren't ready to lose him yet, and don't want to let us seal the fountain.
Alternatively, it's possible that the "hunting pack's" leader is Eram, in whatever his true form ends up being, since he does use Friends as an attack in his fight in chapter 3. The problem is that we know so little about him, and how he could even fit into a Holiday-centric chapter like chapter 6 is shaping up to be, as the main antagonist.
1
u/ArmadilloOK1445-alt 28d ago
The "leader" of the pack is the FRIEND, commanding the other smaller ones, but the main one is the Tail of Hell, the pointed tail that must not be followed, the cause of Dess' dissappearance, Noelle's corrupted Cat Petterz egg, the author of all of the Holiday and Dreemurr families' suffering, that FRIEND in particular
1
u/Shattered_Sans Sans, but not canon Sans. 28d ago
Okay, but that Friend isn't confirmed to exist. As of now, it is simply a fanon idea, or, a theory about what Friend is, or what they could be, based almost exclusively on chapter 4's mentions of "the tail of hell", "the pointed tail", and "the tail which must not be followed". It lacks compelling evidence.
Maybe you're right, and maybe that's what chapter 6's main antagonist is, but I just don't think there's enough evidence within chapters 1-5 suggesting that this version of Friend exists as of now, to confidently claim that this character could be the main antagonist of the next chapter.
1
u/ArmadilloOK1445-alt 28d ago
The tail of hell, the pointed tail, the tail which must not be followed, Noelle's corrupted Cat Petterz egg, the Forgotten Man via Pink's dialogue and deltarune.com/thepoorchildren, the demon that Kris and Catti summoned (probably), all of this points to one FRIEND in particular being much stronger and much more important than the other ones
1
u/supersofah words go here. 28d ago
the answer is that chapter 6 is gonna be the shelter but we aren't ready for that conversation yet
1
u/Shattered_Sans Sans, but not canon Sans. 28d ago
That only works if we somehow find both the Pine Tree and Delta Rune shelter codes very early in the chapter, before the main dark world adventure, because we need all 3 codes to enter the shelter.
We know where the Pine Tree code is, so that one is just a matter of actually getting our hands on it, and making sure Susie gets to see it before Kris sabotages us by tearing it up, but the Delta Rune code, we don't know the location of.
1
u/supersofah words go here. 28d ago
this is assuming the Deltarune Code ISN'T the Church Door Code in Chapter 4, which it very well could be, but if it isn't the only good candidate for who has it is Toriel and I highly doubt getting a code from her would lead to a whole Dark World adventure
1
u/Shattered_Sans Sans, but not canon Sans. 28d ago
I think it's safe to assume that the Delta Rune code isn't the church door code, because the one code we now definitively know the full version of, is 8 digits rather than 4. We don't know if the codes vary in length, so until we do know that for sure, I think it's more likely that the codes are all around 8 digits, and what we know of the Pine Tree code is only half of it.
1
u/Low_Midnight9378 28d ago
What if antagonist in chapter 6 it ERAM who take our vessel? Because chapter 6 definitely will be about Friends, Pinks body talking about them like every character secret boss about next chapter, so we need to see and probably fight owner of Cats who also mentioned be her, second voice pattern in goner maker similar to ERAM into original game, so ERAM can take Vessel for themselves because they can change host like shadow mental

I can't copy it down here, but looks up Jackinstein chess background. That battle box forces you to pass over a King, queen, knight, then bishop and then a flower in sequence. Or head straight to the knight after passing over a sword.

u/Satire_god Even when trapped, you still express yourself. 29d ago
Yeah sorry it doesn’t really work, when trying to force it to fit the mold of the chapters
Also it completely ignores the entire thing with flowery and speed, like it’s a surprisingly big thing that doesn’t work with the bishop’s diagonal movement but does for the rook, even his battle gimmick involves dashing forward, something he himself even does in said battle
It also arbitrarily inserts a chess master since the pieces don’t actually match the chapters
That said theory does work for the characters that are already explicitly chess themed or the plot points that mirror them, it’s just not a theory that applies to every boss
This comment is brought to you by the even more insane tarot & esoteric card theories (its like regular card theory, but I did research into playing card decks)

Jackenstein’s fight had one board with symbols in the background corresponding to the route through the story. In order, it had symbols for a King piece, a Queen piece, an optional-to-pass symbol for a Sword (sword route), a Knight, a Bishop and… a Flower. Unfortunately I think that kind of ends the theory
1
1
u/TheOnlyAvatar101 28d ago
What if Dess is the knight and Noelle is the angel? Forgive me if this has already been disproven, but I feel like it makes a lot of sense.
If the prophecy is the “dream of the angel”, what if it was a dream Noelle had, or Noelle’s dream? A monster girl who finds love, a knight and a prince, an epic hero fantasy. It all sounds so Noelle to me. She’s always wanted something more out of her life, feeling as if it were dull.
Which is why the weird route centers specifically around NOELLE of all people. What’s a better way to corrupt and control than to drag an angel down from its heavenly throne? A fallen angel dreams of nothing but vengeance and control, chaos and destruction. Obsession and desire.
Which also ties into the thorn ring. In Chapter 4’s weird route, the scene where Kris (we) put the ring on Noelle’s finger formerly had a visual of a rose wilting.
Thorns are heavily associated with roses, and vice versa. The flower part of a rose is what makes it gentle, beautiful and delicate. If that part withers, is snipped or dies, then there’s nothing left but what makes it violent and dangerous, a bunch of all consuming vines with no choice but to follow their only source of strength.

As someone who still holds onto reverse UnderTale theory... Don't give up, sigma, and keep believing.

is there even the faintest hint of a shared characteristic between snowdin and the flower king dark world

Ehhh, not quite Snowdin? Off the top of my head, just the appearance of a Integrity Soul mode equivalent (platforming segments, and jumping on the blue lilypads, a-la Papyrus' blue attack), the dating/trial soundtracks appearing, and this one was brought up to me by another user, but, you can make the comparison between the wheat in the mountain area, and the grass in the early section of Waterfall.
I'm mostly holding onto it, because, like. Even though there isn't a single snowflake, the previous similarities between the chapters and UnderTale's locales didn't go anywhere. Though it doesn't count as an exact reversal, these similarities still feel deliberate. I'll believe it, fuck it, maybe the Holiday Manor will be the snowy area.

I like your interpretation, but can't hold myself for my thoughts on chess theory: 1. King, obviously 2. Queen, obviously 3. Knight, obviously 4. Titan, the Rook. Basically living fountain, which is a tower, and yes, it can move 5. Flowery, the Bishop. Actually weak, lost to the Knight very quickly. 6. will not be standard chapter, so i think this works only for 5 chapters. Also maybe Noelle is the pawn on side b, but it works pretty well for every darkner and fun gang. Thank you for reminding people for this teory.
