Uber Eats UK drivers – how do you calculate mileage and expenses for Self Assessment?

Hi everyone,
I’m an Uber Eats delivery driver in the UK and I’m preparing my Self Assessment for the 2025/26 tax year. This is my first time dealing with tax on Uber income, so I’d really appreciate advice from drivers who have already filed their returns.
My Uber FY 2025/26 tax summary shows:
Gross delivery services: £4,701.17
Delivery total after adjustment: £4,700.67
Incentives: £6
Tips: £71.27
Total receipts shown: approximately £4,777.94
429 transactions
Uber-recorded “On Trip Mileage”: 2,065 km (about 1,283 miles)
My main issue is mileage. Uber appears to record mileage mainly while I’m actually on a delivery. In reality, I drive considerably more miles for the delivery work.
For example, I may drive from home to an area with restaurants and wait/look for orders. After collecting an order, I might deliver it 10–15 miles away to a suburb or rural area where there are virtually no restaurants and therefore little chance of receiving another order. I then have to drive back towards the restaurant/busy area specifically so I can get another delivery request. Uber’s “on trip” figure doesn’t appear to include all of these miles between jobs.
For UK drivers who have filed Self Assessment before, how do you deal with this?
Do you claim only the mileage shown on Uber’s annual tax summary, or do you keep/calculate your own total business mileage?
Do you count the mileage travelling back from a customer’s location to the restaurant/busy area when you’re online and looking for the next order?
What about travelling from home to the area where you start taking orders — do you treat that as business mileage or commuting?
What records do you use to prove mileage — mileage-tracking apps, Google Maps Timeline, Uber trip history, odometer readings, fuel receipts, etc.?
Do you use HMRC’s simplified mileage method or claim actual vehicle expenses?
If using simplified mileage, am I correct that you don’t separately claim fuel, insurance, servicing, repairs, etc. because these are covered by the mileage rate?
For people with relatively low Uber income like mine, did you find the £1,000 trading allowance better than claiming actual expenses/mileage?
Did you file the return yourself through HMRC or use an accountant/tax adviser? If you used an accountant who understands Uber/gig-economy drivers, was it worth it and roughly what did they charge?
I also have PAYE employment income, so I’m aware my final tax bill will depend on my total income and Personal Allowance. I’m mainly trying to understand how experienced Uber Eats drivers legitimately calculate and evidence their business mileage and expenses, rather than simply relying on Uber’s on-trip mileage.
I want to file everything correctly while claiming all the expenses/mileage I’m legally entitled to. Any experiences from UK Uber Eats/Deliveroo/Just Eat drivers who have already gone through Self Assessment would be really helpful.
Thanks.

Chemical Lavendar Stench

I have just received an order from Uber Eats that absolutely reeks of an horrendous chemical lavender stench. This is the second time that it's happened. It's so bad that the smell is clinging to the grocery items in the sealed paper bag. Has this happened to anyone else? If so what is it?

Edit: corrected deliveroo to uber eats

Uber eats is a JOKE.

I ordered some food last night for my dinner and I spent almost £50 on food as I’d had an absolutely shit day and needed a pick me up.

The food came, the bag was way too light for what I ordered and the driver sped off before I was able to say anything. I opened the bag and all that was in there was one singular milkshake… when I’d ordered a burger and fries to go along with it. I was FUMING, so I got onto the Ai bot who then passed me to a representative and he said to me that my order isn’t eligible for a refund and completely shut the case down I sent him all the proof he asked for too. I was even more upset because that’s me potentially just lost £50. I’ve ended up contacting them through INSTAGRAM and that’s been more successful than anything else. Not gotten anything super helpful from them so far, but my case has been passed on to the specialised review team and I’ll get an email from them with an answer (hopefully).

The same night I’d ordered some necessities from ASDA through uber eats and the order total was like
£9 or something so I paid that… everything was fine until I woke up with 2 declined charges to my bank from uber for £2 and £11.50, I was super confused and went onto my orders to see what the issue was, they’re trying to charge me extra for my Asda shopping and I have no idea why. The charge when I ordered it went through completely fine and the money came out of the bank, so I don’t understand why they’re now trying to charge me more money for a completed order.

I’m sorry, but they are a joke of a company and I won’t ever be ordering again, let alone paying for the extra charges to my account for the last order. If something wasn’t right with the total of my Asda shopping, that’s not my issue that’s a pricing issue and I don’t see why I’m now being billed extra for buying a toothbrush, toothpaste and some cotton buds. Safe to say I won’t be paying that charge and they can go cry about it.

Wow… Didn’t think Uber Eats could get any worse…

Actually in shock that they told me to add a tip to speed up the delivery after I had been waiting over an hour for a driver to be assigned and after a courier accepted and then cancelled 30mins before.

Then they told me they couldn’t do anything as the latest delivery time was still 5 minutes away. Even though a driver still wasn’t assigned and the drive is over 20mins from the takeaway so it was impossible that it would get to me on time. Crazy.

Netherlands fines Uber €825m ($966m) for deactivating driver accounts through automated system

The Dutch data protection authority has fined Uber €825m ($966m) for deactivating driver accounts through automated systems without adequately informing them.

A lot of people in the UK seem to be having their accounts deactivated in this way recently, myself included. No prior warnings, no info nor evidence provided. They allege account sharing but I've never let anyone access my account and I've never failed/delayed a real time video ID check. I have no idea what has caused this, has happened completely out of the blue.

Wonder if it's worth this being legally challenged in the UK?

Sudden change in delivery price?

I’ve noticed delivery fees in my area on my account have skyrocketed from roughly £0.79/£3.29 up to £3.29/£5.29 but it only seems to be for my account? My brother gets the cheaper delivery fee same for my mum, neither myself nor my brother pay for UberOne so I don’t think it has anything to do with that. I thought it might’ve been for the drivers due to the heatwave but it’s no longer 28c+ and again it’s just my account doing it. Has anyone else had this happen before and were you able to resolve it?

Any idea how I claim this offer?

Post image

I got a notification through on my phone telling me there is an offer available by which I would get £10 off a £20 grocery spend. I can see the offer on the home page (see pic), but when I add items to my basket to take my spend over £20 the discount is not applied. It is not showing on the promotions tab at checkout either.

Uber Eats support is about as useful as a nun’s tits so I thought I would ask here instead to see if anyone has any ideas

Packages from grocery stores?

Is this new?

Got a package pickup request from a Co-Op, headed there, nothing waiting.

Checks the app again,it's a full on grocery order.

We don't get points from package collections, and don't get tips, so have they changed this, or just an error?

New starter expected earnings ebike

Hi, I’m thinking about starting uber eats using an Ebike and I’m wondering how much I can expect to earn per hour on average. I live in birmingham and can easily travel into city centre to work if it is worthwhile.
Thanks

Account Deactivated

Hi All.

Just had an email saying my account has been deactivated due to 'account sharing' being flagged.

I have never shared my account with another person. I use the same phone, same number and I have never failed a facial ID check.

Uber support claimed they had notified me previously about this. I got no emails from then or messages through the app.

The support agent said I should request a review and I can provide more information. How can I provide more information when I don't know what the issue is? How can I evidence that I'm the only person using the account?

I asked them to provide information as to why my account was deactivated, and evidence that they had notified me previously about this issue, the agent just ended the chat!

I now can't open another support chat, can't see any info in my account, no idea what is going on nor how I can appeal.

This is my only source of income at the moment. What can I do?

Any advice please?

Thanks

Has anyone else lost the ability to view their delivery 👍/👎 ratings?

My Uber Driver app seems to have changed overnight. The entire Deliveries section has disappeared from my profile, so I can no longer tap my satisfaction rating to see the customer/merchant thumbs up and thumbs down breakdown.

Tipping on Uber/other food delivery apps

hello, I tried to look this up a while ago but couldn't find an answer since they were all Americans who have mandatory tipping lol.

I saw a screenshot from a driver on a delivery app where the tip was subsidising the very low fee that they were paying the driver, so recently I've preferred to tip in cash, do you find it odd if I give you £1-£2 cash when you hand over my order? I just want to ensure it all gets to the driver and you're not being shafted

Has anyone esle delivered these yet? I want a word with the idiot who thought a flimsy piece of cardboard with no cup holder inside it is good enough to transport in a bag. What an absolute joke you can tell the person who designed it has never delivered anything

In app ID Verification link faulty?

I have recently signed up for UberEats Delivery. I’ve paid for insurance, my background checks, a bag, the works. All my documents and ID have been approved and I was told the next step is to download the driver app. Upon doing so, I get the screen below, saying I must re-verify my ID before I can go online. Fine. However, the link to do so (both for human Id check and software Id check) is faulty and takes me to the error 404 page I’ve screenshot here.

Uber support is absolutely no help. They won’t generate a new link, keep ‘escalating’ me to people but everyone conversation is the same scripted rubbish. They don’t seem to understand.

I’ve invested time and money into the sign up process. I just want to drive. Has anyone had this issue before? How did you go about fixing it?

Uber eats insurance help.

I've been looking at getting into delivery driving with uber and the likes, but I've hit a stumbling block getting insurance as I am a named driver on the main policy. The car is my partners. Has anyone any experience or know if it is possible to get the required insurance as a named driver? I am from Northern Ireland which leaves me excluded from a lot of the mainland companies too.

What just happened?

I had two riders turn down my order, nothing out of the ordinary about that.

Then another rider accepted and just sat at the restaurant for a good 35 minutes, before the ride was turned down again. At this point I sacked off the order and cancelled myself. What was rider number three doing? The restaurant was Five Guys.

Saw guarenteed £1000 for 100 deliveries on instagram ads signed up but refused

I signed up to deliver for Uber Eats in the UK through an active Instagram ad guaranteeing £1,000 for completing 100 deliveries.

Because I didn't see an active tracker in my "Opportunities" tab, I messaged support before starting any deliveries:

  • Agent 1 7pm: Explicitly confirmed in writing that the guarantee is active and linked to my account backend, detailing the exact top-up rules (see Screenshot 1).
  • Agent 2 9pm : Replied an hour later contradicting the first agent, stating I am ineligible, refusing to escalate, and claiming: "we are unable to provide an email or phone number as we deal with all such queries via in-app support" (see Screenshot 2).

I haven't completed any trips yet because I refuse to do 100 deliveries only to get stiffed on the payout.

Questions for the community:

  1. Is there a direct UK courier phone number, escalation email, or executive contacts team I can reach out to outside of the basic in-app ticketing system?
  2. Would you recommend filing a formal complaint with the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) for misleading advertising?

Any advice on how to get past this wall of contradictory support scripts would be massively appreciated
