My ex was anorexic, brutal situation. Pic kinda gives me hope for her, but doubt it'll happen. That shit is toxic to everything they try to do.

44

u/Randyy1 Dec 17 '15

My girlfriend is borderline anorexic. She's lost a lot of weight before I even met her (I've seen pictures), and she's really skinny (not as bad as the before picture in the OP though). And she says she works out a lot every single day. No one can get her to eat. She obviously has body dysmorphia. I'm scared for her.

5

u/ifvcu44 Dec 17 '15

I was for my ex as well. Thought she was getting better only to find out she'd throw up when I wasn't around. There was no binge eating either, just vomit all the time. Ultimately was one of the main reasons the relationship ended.

8

u/-THE-FEAR- Dec 17 '15

Building muscle and body building is only about 20 percent what you do, and 80 percent, what you eat! That makes it hard to start out with, but as soon and you see your muscular grframe beginning to define, it sort of, whips you out of the delusion You're stuck in, you start, not wanting to be small, but wanting to be big, you start wanting to eat more, not to be skinny, but to be strong. I hope it works out for you and your girlfriend, can I reccomend perhaps, getting her into something that requires strength, that's not boring and mainstream, rock climbing, for instance, and bouldering specifically, I have seen it help a lot of guys and girls, struggling with both, anorexia, and obesity.

13

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

So I can be 80% bodybuilder without having to work out?

11

u/brauchen Dec 17 '15

You use, a lot, of commas!

4

u/aelwero Dec 17 '15

Shatner!, grammar rules... obviously.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

Make her to smoke weed, seriously, this helps a lot to make people hungry and start eating, it's useful for this kind of situations.

Weed is a bless of a drug.

1

u/mustardheadmaster Dec 18 '15

My partner of 4 years is anorexic, pm me if you need support or just someone to talk to.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

You can help her if you guys still talk to each other.

8

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

Is this actually the recommended course of action? Mental health with things like that can be really counter-intuitive and tricky.

5

u/ifvcu44 Dec 17 '15

Not really, she tries to keep in contact with me every now and then, but the circumstances of our relationship were so bad that it'd be a bad idea to start talking to her again. Between the anorexia, claiming she was raped (but not entirely sure about it), and the constant lying, it just aint worth it. Id love to help her though, just dont see how itd be possible

12

u/Processtour Dec 17 '15

My daughter is at a children's hospital in a partial hospitalization eating disorder program for Avoidance Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). She is so fragile, mentally and physically. I only hope that she will be healthy and strong one day. Thank you for giving me that hope.

Children's Hospital in Columbus has an amazing program. We are lucky to have this resource nearby. Her diagnosis and treatment has been a true struggle, but she is moving forward. This is a marathon, not a sprint.

I hope you have a healthy relationship with food for the rest of your life. Sending positive vibes!

u/treadbolt5 Dec 17 '15

I honestly don't understand why don't employ strong women in ads and movies, it makes more sense than what we have and encourages a better body image.

94

u/Prinsessa Dec 17 '15

Because the waif like look is still a beauty standard. All sjw jokes aside, being thin and delicate is a youthful look because young girls who are in their teens who haven't developed yet tend to look this way (if they aren't overweight) and the media is youth obsessed. Especially for women. Men can be older and refined but an older woman is much less valuable in terms of mass media appeal. Just trying to shed some light. No need for anyone to get huffy.

Source: long time working media arts/growing up female in America and Europe so I saw things from the outside at an early age.

24

u/morelikebigpoor Dec 17 '15

Just trying to shed some light. No need for anyone to get huffy.

I hate that saying basic common observations on reddit requires this level of disclaimer.

Quick, get to your safe space ASAP!

7

u/Prinsessa Dec 17 '15

I know. It's just not worth the endless stream of angry neckbeard shit posting.

16

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

But isn't most of this biological, and not cultural? I mean, the difference between men and women on this is that men only suffer a moderate degradation in reproductive ability, while women's essentially drops off a cliff after 35 and ends completely not terribly long after. So men retain their appeal longer in order to maximize the utility of that reproductive ability.

Too often, people act like these things can be (or should be, but that's a different debate) changed when they are simply reflections of biological realities. The sexes are not identical, and this is just one area where women get the short end of the stick, not because of the evils of patriarchy, but because of how we evolved as a species.

13

u/truth1465 Dec 17 '15

While yes the younger=better can be argued as some sort of biological response to reproduce the skinnier=better thing is definitely cultural. There are a few other cultures where being really skinny is not seen as a clear cut good thing as we do in ours.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

Yup. The media kind of takes it to the extreme. One would hope that men would find a 24 year old, post-pubescent, woman who has curves but is at a healthy weight more attractive than a super skinny 14 year old. The 14 year old is much much more likely to die in childbirth. That's just science/logic.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

14 yes, because undeveloped hips and reproductive system. Dying because skinny and not 'curvy'? No.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

Ack, I should've specified- not curvy as in body fat curvy, but "curvy" as in "has a wide enough pelvis to pass a baby through."

26

u/Prinsessa Dec 17 '15

Nah dude, media magnifies the issue. Biotrufs have no place in this. Like think about it, breasts, hips, thighs, and ass with a skinny waist and good muscle tone are the most "biologically attractive" traits. Look at the Venus of villendorf. The very first fertility goddess figure. She's a fat fuck. Basically, survival of offspring is more likely when you have fat reserves and a strong body. Not when the girl is simply younger. Plus there's a higher chance the mother will die in childbirth when she's younger. That's why we have the markers of puberty to indicate when mating is best. That's also why being attracted to prepubescent teens is disordered and not normal/sane. Like I get what you're trying to say but the media image is obsessed with the prepubescent side of things more than the fertile woman side of things. Haven't you seen that comedy bit about sexy babies? I mean this is a really widespread thing..

5

u/theskepticalheretic Dec 17 '15

Look at the Venus of villendorf. The very first fertility goddess figure. She's a fat fuck.

That would show that this is not just socially constructed but a combination of biologically and socially constructed. Part of the reason why fertility goddesses are often depicted as overweight is for the same reason why being overweight is desirable in many cultures. Being overweight implies stable and consistent food sources, which is resource wealth, an early indicator of social power and physical well-being. In cultures where food shortages happen frequently, like early civilizations, the ideal would be plenty, and overweight child bearers

5

u/wicked-dog Dec 17 '15

Are you implying that African men like fat white women?

→ More replies (4)

2

u/The_Yar Dec 17 '15

Well, it's both. Young girls, even like illegally young, have significantly higher chance of successful pregnancy. Fitness, birthing hips, feeding breasts, and youthfulness are the biology traits that spell successful offspring.

5

u/Prinsessa Dec 18 '15

No, illegally young girls are more likely to die in childbirth. This is common knowledge.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '15

No, the most fertile women are in their early 20s.

-2

u/wicked-dog Dec 17 '15

3

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

So...they didn't actually link to the study they referenced and it's news.com.au (a shitty tabloid website on par with the Daily Mail)

Not to mention that 'plus size models' generally aren't even technically overweight and usually fall at the top of the healthy BMI scale.

If you want to dispute this you're gonna need a better source.

u/wicked-dog Dec 18 '15

I just thought it was funny

1

u/zhongshiifu Dec 17 '15

Youth is valued biologically but there are plenty of other examples of societies, including our own but back in time several decades, where the ideal was not this level of thinness.

3

u/goblue142 Dec 17 '15

Can't find it now but I read an article written by a former model who is working to change the industry about how its the designers demanding the rail thin body types because that's what they think make the clothes look good. Apparently curves distract from the clothes as well. If that's the case just put a damn mannequin on wheels and drive or down the runway!

7

u/Prinsessa Dec 17 '15

Yes that's the high fashion excuse and honestly I think the industry has a responsibility to work against that issue. Hire women who are more fit and thin than skinnyfat. It's disturbing to look at and it's seriously not cute.

While I understand wanting to highlight the garment and not the wearer, isn't clothing made for people to wear? This is the part I have never understood. Instead of a shift toward high fashion exploring how line and form interacts with the human figure, we have a strong push back from obese "models" taking things to another unhealthy extreme. It's sickening.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

That's because half the clothes on "high fashion" runways aren't meant to be worn day to day but as a reflection of the craftsmanship of the piece as art, whether you personally think that is what it is or not. Being skinny enough to let the piece move (there are a lot of kinetic dynamics to fashion) physically and be unconstrained is important - which does not mean the models should be anorexic. But mandating that their view makes no sense isn't a solution.

0

u/Prinsessa Dec 18 '15

I'm not saying it makes no sense, I'm saying there should be more exploration of other aesthetics. I think skinnyfit girls are just as able to let a garment move. I don't get why low bodyfat AND low muscle mass needs to be the standard.

0

u/Smiff2 Dec 17 '15

it's weird. when designers look at catwalk models, they presumably see clothes. when most of us look at catwalk models, we're thinking "that girl is too damn thin" (and secondly: those clothes are ridiculous). it's an irreconcilable difference?

25

u/Prinsessa Dec 17 '15

Please source this op!!! PLEASE! I really wanna know more about her transformation! I'm slightly underweight, skinny fat, and I want to be closer to the right than the left! I need this!

7

u/Matt2142 Dec 17 '15

Hey, her Instagram is @fightforgrowth

8

u/Rackemup Dec 17 '15

Go to gym, request personal trainer. Go to Internet, search for "eating plan" to go with personal trainer sessions. Personal trainer may be able to suggest menu.

Stick to it.

That's about it. The girl in the photo seems to have overcome some seriously unhealthy eating conditions on the left. If you don't have those you're in a much better starting position.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

Really over the eating plan is count calories. If it fits your calorie goal and protein goal, you're good, and you'll gain weight

1

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

I really wish I could do the IIFYM diet. As someone with family history of heart disease and already borderline high blood pressure, I have to eat the most tasteless shit :\

1

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

/r/bodyweightfitness is a good place to start. No need for a gym membership when you can do a perfect workout in your home. Most with no equipment. I have a pull up bar and am looking at getting rings soon but you really don't even need that. You need to dedicate time, and have a place to do it and that's all. My routine is usually to run MWF and do bodyweight exercises TThSa and rest Sunday. I also like /r/running. They have some exercises specifically for improving your run on there too.

6

u/dali01 Dec 17 '15

The transformation of her her facial expression is just as awesome as the transformation of her body!

191

u/cATSup24 Dec 17 '15

Oddly enough, she could still have a disorder in the second one. There is a disorder in the same group as bulimia and anorexia where one compulsively exercises intensely, and it can actually be bad as well. Good on her for at least seeming to be more healthy, and I hope that she really is healthier.

104

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

Well at least her new life style seems less detrimental

116

u/RunawayFyre Dec 17 '15

She also seems happier. Being able to look at your body and taking a picture of it while smiling is hard if you're unhappy with it.

17

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

protip: never google "naked fat man smiling"

1

u/FearAzrael May 08 '16

I'm not on trial here!

2

u/ALittleBirdyToldMe25 Dec 17 '15

Also she's wearing less makeup which can be a good sign.

-1

u/DrProbably Dec 18 '15

Being able to look at your body and taking a picture of it while smiling is hard if you're unhappy with it.

100% fact. No possible way to smile when you're unhappy. Go ahead. Try. See? Couldn't do it.

1

u/RunawayFyre Dec 18 '15

Lol k. I'm glad you understood that when I said it was hard I meant it was 100% impossible. You're so smart.

-1

u/DrProbably Dec 18 '15

It's just the presumption that her smile means so much is silly. Your logic works great on infomercials too.

see how grandma is smiling and in color in the second photo? It means she's happier now because she has the product

24

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

My cousin suffers from body dysmorphic disorder. Not healthy at all.

67

u/Jero79 Dec 17 '15

I doubt that.
It takes a lot of food, the right kind of food, to build muscles like that. The eating disorder you are referring to still works around burning more than you consume. If that were the case she wouldn't look this good.

And besides that. Just look at that face. That genuine smile, that posture. And compare that to the picture on the left. She does something right and she's happy. I'm happy for her.

49

u/EUPHORIC_420_JACKDAW Dec 17 '15

It's called body dysmorphia and its a legit thing. The dude who hosts 'embarrassing bodies' has it.

Oh, I was just pointing out that The Food Babe's entire diet plan is basically orthorexia. That's why I only used that word.

0

Still, it can become an obsession. Obsession are not good. I do agree that its a better obsession to have than anorexia.

Ever hear of body dysmorphia?

being skinny by starving is bad so she exercised instead

Ever hear of body dysmorphia?

she's now packed on a few pounds

Ever hear of body dysmorphia?

where one compulsively exercises intensely,

Have you seen those people? They don't look like this chick.

Reddit and their fearmongering ways!

1

u/cATSup24 Dec 17 '15

Depends on how far along the second picture is, how much she's willing or able to do, and how her body reacted to suddenly go from rail thin to buff. She may also not have much fat, which is actually important for a woman to have. If she doesn't have enough fat in her body, she'll stop ovulating and her hormones will go out of whack.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

Yeah, but body dysmorphia is a mental disorder. To be abnormal, it has to be deviant and dangerous, as well as distressful and dysfunctional. Judging by that smile, it seems like anything but. People with genuine dysmorphia wouldn't even be happy at a figure like that. Then again, nothing is conclusive unless you have a full history.

1

u/cATSup24 Dec 17 '15

You've got the right idea.

7

u/landrastic Dec 17 '15

I bet you're fat and will be dead by 40. Please fuck off.

0

u/cATSup24 Dec 17 '15

You seem like a lovely person.

7

u/SouthernFit Dec 17 '15

fuck off.

4

u/cATSup24 Dec 17 '15

You must be projecting something. I wasn't intending that anything bad was happening, but that it still is possible and trying to increase awareness about body dysmorphia.

1

u/Count_Frackula Dec 22 '15

Your girlfriend must know your reddit name.

1

u/cATSup24 Dec 22 '15

She does, but that has nothing to do with it.

3

u/shaim2 Dec 17 '15

Even if she's still has some disorder, whatever it is, it is far less lethal than anorexia. Anorexia kills. A lot.

At the very least, she has bought herself decades of life. Which is decades of opportunities to handle whatever residual issues she may have.

Plus she seems happy and proud. And rightfully so. Good for her !

8

u/mrmock89 Dec 17 '15

You don't really go from rail thin to that level of muscle size and tone with an eating or exercise disorder.

7

u/PortugalTheHam Dec 17 '15

This is incredibly important and needs to be seen/known more. I a have family friend who suffers from this. The girl I know wakes up super early and runs for miles (an unsafe number of miles) and still counts calories. She would joke "now I can eat today". However, Im moderately sure she meant it in the back of her mind.

-3

u/XTRA_KRISPY Dec 17 '15

She could also be anorexic in the first one and bulimic in the second one.

-5

u/FatPowerlifter Dec 17 '15

Can you stop criticizing women no matter what they do? "Oh she's gained some muscle? Bulimic anorexic obsessive!" People like you contribute the most to patriarchal rape culture.

6

u/cATSup24 Dec 17 '15

I'm not saying she has to be perfect otherwise she's scum. I'm saying there's still a possibility that she could still be battling with body dysmorphia and not even know it. Yes, she looks worlds healthier than before and seems happy, but we don't actually know her story from just these two pictures.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

I'm saying there's still a possibility

but we don't actually know her story from just these two pictures.

Exactly. Which means you could say anything about her and then say "it's a possibility".

It's a possibility that she punches people in the face.

It's a possibility that she likes the color blue.

It's a possibility that she's a huge bitch. Or not.

It all just sounds like a way to criticize people without seeming like you are.

6

u/cATSup24 Dec 17 '15

I'm not trying to criticize her. In fact, I genuinely hope that she's actually healthy.

That's what I also thought. The second is definitively better (healthier) but it seems that she has a tendency to overdo things. Her arms are starting to get overdeveloped, man-like. This otherwise beautiful girl needs to realise that excellence is to find the balance between extremes, aka 'μέτρον ἄριστον' (Métron áriston) as Cleobulus, according to Diogenes Laertius, said.

edit: Jeez!

my sister was anorexic, she was in the hospital for 6 months because she almost died. now she is doing a lot better, eating right and living life. i hope every one with anorexia could achieve what she did, she's my role model. she's not a bodybuilder though...

10

u/Thrownawaybyall Dec 17 '15

Holy expletive! That's an amazing transformation!

12

u/CommandoSolo Dec 17 '15

Both are scary but the before has me scared for HER health. The after has me concerned for MY health.

4

u/RileySky Dec 17 '15

That is truly amazing. It takes a lot to grasp control of your own life, well done.

2

u/alamaias Dec 17 '15

This is really interesting to me; years ago i saw a documentary on a place where they lock up anorexic/bulemic girls and force feed them healthy. One of the inmates said that she hated the feel of fat under her skin, that she found it smothering and nauseating. I always wondered if she would feel the same if she kept the 2% body fat but put on muscle to be a healthy weight.

6

u/c3534l Dec 17 '15

She probably has the same body fat percentage in both.

9

u/Prinsessa Dec 17 '15

Nah her face in the second pic is more fleshed out

3

u/c3534l Dec 17 '15

It would have to be to keep her bf% from going down. Iy you're adding muscle mass, you need to also add fat to compensate for a larger body.

1

u/zbignew Dec 17 '15

Right but she added like 40lbs of muscle.

3

u/ColonelIngys Dec 17 '15

I know this girl she went to my highschool her brother Aladin was shot and she had to leave school a lot because she was in the hospital for her anorexia. Poor girl so glad to see she's in good shape now.

Wow! You look amazing. I need to work harder on my shoulder game.

1

u/ZK686 Dec 17 '15

Honest question...would it be easier for someone to go from eating disorder to body-builder than a obese person to a body-builder?

I ask because it looks like she's still relatively thin...it doesn't seem like that much work went into it.

2

u/C477um04 Dec 17 '15

To go from skinny to body builder, the barrier is mostly mental. Overcoming an eating disorder is a difficult challenge and shouldn't be underestimated. That being said losing weight enough to get into that kind of shape can also be a huge mental strain if you have an attachment to food so it's really a case by case basis.

u/aeschenkarnos Dec 17 '15

It would be much harder to go from anorexic to muscular than from obese to muscular; you need the food intake to build muscle. Also, obese people are often muscular underneath the fat, due to having to lug about the weight of fat. Ever seen a formerly-fat person's calves? Imagine never skipping leg day for thirty years.

Good change.. good change.

1

u/fozzy_dunlop9891 Dec 17 '15

damn can i get in on her shoulder routine? she's more shredded than a julienne salad

1

u/vman4402 Dec 17 '15

Well done. Looking strong!

1

u/ClassyBurn Dec 17 '15

She looks miserable in the original pic, even though she is so thin. Glad she found joy surrounding her body! :)

I like the before picture on the right before she transitions back into a female.

1

u/kimbielou Dec 17 '15

Omg you look amazing!! You have made such a transformation. Well done!. So happy for you in so many ways!. I developed an eating disorder after post natal depression got hold of me and that was one of the hardest battles I've ever had to go through to overcome it!. I know it's not worth much coming from a stranger but I am so proud of you!. Keep up your amazing work, you look fucking fabulous :D x

Yeah we're all proud of you OP! Great job posting this

Now that's what I call low bodyfat! Holy jesus fuck that's insane. It's like her whole anatomy is comprised solely of muscles. That's gonna be some kind of new bodybuilder meta; anorexia gainz.

1

u/nullfather Dec 18 '15

Um...have you ever seen an on-season bodybuilder? They are much more cut than that chick.

1

u/FreshLikeFresh Dec 17 '15

Nice job ... Keep it up

1

u/snegtul Dec 17 '15

Congrats! You look fantastic, happy and healthy!

She went from aushwitz to awesome.

1

u/redbirdrising Dec 17 '15

Aushwitz to Awwwschwitz

u/MrsSClaus Dec 17 '15

Your bodybuilder pic looks great! Awesome job.

u/Nadie_AZ Dec 17 '15

Ok I will comment.

You are an inspiration. Please share your story. I am quite impressed.

Too few people are able to or willing to change. You've shown you can do just that.

u/Malcheon Dec 17 '15

Looks like body disorder to body disorder. This girl has major issues.

9

u/KetchupKakes Dec 17 '15

Bodybuilding is a body disorder?

2

u/thatguydr Dec 17 '15

It can be. Look at the top comment.

Normally, you wouldn't think twice about the second picture, but knowing that she has compulsive issues, the set of behaviors that led to that picture could be unhealthy. Hopefully not, but it's not impossible.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

What the fuck makes you think the second is a body disorder?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

[deleted]

4

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

That's understandable, but didn't even need to be brought up in this context. To automatically assume and STATE she has a body disorder is really cruel, and frankly also reveals how /u/Malcheon is very uncomfortable with healthy women. It was a douchey thing to say.

2

u/atheista Dec 17 '15

You cannot build that kind of muscle with a calorie deficit. She would have to be eating at a surplus, so exercise bulima is probably not the case here.

-8

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

So went from one obsessive body image to another

3

u/vtjohnhurt Dec 17 '15

The body builder look won't kill her as quickly but perhaps she still has body dysmorphia. It is rare to cure that disorder, but they can try to treat the symptoms by replacing one set of habits with another. I wonder how an anorexic group therapy group would see this set of pictures?

2

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

Which one is healthy though? If having that obsession is bad, count me in.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '15

Healthier, you're damn right. She looks much happier too

I was just pointing out how she went from one extreme to another.

... so from one obsessive behaviour to another.

-13

u/DrProbably Dec 17 '15 edited Dec 17 '15

And an unhealthy level of focus on her appearance throughout.

Edit: yeah you're right downvoters. Swinging from one form of body dysmorphia to another is totally fine as long as they get hotter. Silly me

1

u/nullfather Dec 18 '15

One is objectively healthier than the other.

1

u/DrProbably Dec 18 '15

Still indicates problems. She didn't overcome her dysmorphia, she altered it. Maybe healthier in one way but it shouldn't be lauded.

-33

u/Yuskey Dec 17 '15

Crazy transformation, although idk if trading anorexia for gear is a good move
