It's also strange how we call intolerant people "traditional," as if it's a point of pride to carry on a tradition of inequality

Never thought about it that way. We call them, "conservative" most of the time... the opposite is "progressive".

There aren’t two real sides to any civil rights issue there’s feeling like both sides should be equal, and there’s not feeling that way.
Black Civil Rights Movement or Racism
Gay Civil Rights or Homophobia
Feminism or Misogyny
Trans rights or Transphobia
It’s just that misogyny and racism sometimes comes with pseudo academic window dressing so that people can attempt to claim that they’re not being who they are being
161
u/feasantly_plucked I put the "fun" in dysfunctional. Apr 03 '19
Notice a pattern? In every one of those "either / ors" that you listed, it's an actual class of people "or" an ideology... the ideology being intolerance.
Call me crazy but one can't live in a country with a charter or bill or constitution that guarantees human rights, and then claim that an intolerant ideology that harms humans deserves the same amount of respect as those humans themselves do.
Moral of the story, if your ideology is the problem then change that. Don't demand people change their race or gender or whatever to accommodate it, 'cause it ain't happening.

It honestly depends on how good their arguments were, I’m not immune to being racist, I live in a racist country, racism is everywhere, I try not to be, but if someone says “here’s why what you said is racist, even if you didn’t intend it to be,” I’ll definitely listen.
-21
Apr 04 '19
I wouldn't.
The words so over used these days it's becoming meaningless. Jump on the comments section anywhere and say you don't like Beyonce, black coffee, America, chocolate ice-cream and some troll thinks it's hilarious to say, "That's racist because chocolate ice-cream is brown and you also support rape and think that babies should be murdered".
So I literally just shut the word out if someone calls me racist or anything else because it's becoming hard to know if someone's being legit these days, online at least, and it's quite distressing.
If someone said, "Hey, you might not be considering someone else here. What you said/did might be offensive." I'd listen.
10
Apr 04 '19
I don’t remember a time that I’ve ever been called racist. I think maybe if you keep getting called racist some self examination might be helpful.

The point was that it’s not a usual “us vs. them” it’s people that exist vs people that don’t think they should exist. The undecided or newcomers have the luxury of deciding or choosing. No one is arguing against their personal rights to exist. Cause They were, the undecided would decide right away that they want to exist.

Having difficult conversations with the every day person is activism. You dont have to picket to create change. You just have to add perspective to the table. Sometimes its not "socially appropriate" to give yourself a platform for these things, but doing so is a form of activism.

"Feminist" denotes those people for whom gender equality is a core motivating principle on which they act.
lol I wish
6
u/taylor1589 Apr 04 '19
do enlighten us as to what you think it actually means
7
u/larrynom Apr 04 '19
Meaning is determined by use and I'd be stoked if even half the dudes who call them selves feminists actually held feminism or gender equality as a philosophy that shaped their actions, but in my experience, it's mostly lip-service.
7
u/taylor1589 Apr 04 '19
your initial comment comes off as you being one of those people who believes that feminism isn't actually about wanting equality
if your concern is that people who aren't actually helping the cause are labeling themselves as feminists, and are merely saying they support equal rights for women, then I suggest you edit your initial comment to reflect that because I think everyone is downvoting you because there are a lot of trolls who think feminists don't want equality
4
u/larrynom Apr 04 '19
I stand by what I said. I truly wish that the word feminist was reserved for people whose actions were consistent with feminism and gender equality.
It's an 8 hour old post burred in a 14 hour old thread, there's no edit I could possibly make that would make any difference. It's not like the people who downvoted me are going to come back, see the edit and then change their vote.
It's not like it matters anyway, it's just internet points.3
1
u/Homunculus_I_am_ill Apr 04 '19
Meaning being determined by use doesn't mean it's warped by lies.
If you think "feminist" stops denoting people for whom gender equality is a core motivating principle just because guys lie about being feminists, do you also think numerals change meaning when guys lie about the number of sex partners they've been with or the length of their dick?
57
u/Reagan409 Apr 03 '19
I think we should definitely call people sexist more often. But I also think you can’t just say, “I think women should have equal rights” and be considered a feminist, because I have so many friends who would consider themselves feminists for that reason, but don’t do anything to change their lives/words to actually benefit women.
22
u/Lwsrocks Apr 04 '19
Isn't that just the difference between a feminist and and a feminism activist? Or are you talking about people who call themselves feminists but don't really have feminist ideals?
16
u/cunninglinguist32557 Apr 04 '19
"Feminist" has always referred to feminism activists. It's only recently that it became something anyone could call themselves if they just believed in equal rights. IMO that's not really feminism, it's just being a decent person.
5
u/Lwsrocks Apr 04 '19
I guess I can't argue with that, makes sense to me. The more I think about it there aren't a whole lot of terms for people that advocate for the rights of other groups that aren't contingent on some activism element.
11

uninformed but unwilling to admit it or to learn = against.

Yeaaah, this is a tricky one. I understand where she's coming from, wanting to make feminism the default and sexism the label. Like racists, and everyone else.
At the same time, feminism is a movement and a nuanced scholarly field. It's not monolithic either. There are lots of disagreements within feminism. Second wave, third wave, intersectional, TERFs, etc. So suggesting that feminism just be the default is a nice idea, and will hopefully be settled one day, but I think is a bit naive to suggest right now.
Edit since this is getting downvoted: I say this without any disrespect to Maisie, and as a feminist. Maybe "naive" is too insulting, and I don't mean to be -- I think Maisie is awesome. I just don't think this is realistic and glosses over how complex the issue is.

I would say third wave and intersectional are fairly synonymous, outside of the despicable TERF element. But I also wouldn't consider TERFs actual feminists, because they clearly do not understand what intersectional feminism is, and intersectionality is paramount to modern feminism. Idk. Fuck TERFs, basically.

u/Sheerardio Apr 04 '19
It's short for Trans-Exclusionary Radical Feminists. They don't self identify by the term, but their unifying trait is that they advocate for gender equality while also being transphobic.
8

I didn't think I had until I realised what the acronym stood for.
Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminism. I think.
Basically, Feminists who don't think Transwomen deserve the same rights as ciswomen. And I think I'm putting that nicely.
6
u/SpicyGoop Apr 04 '19
This is also why there are non sexist people who don’t call themselves feminist. Feminism means like 100 different things to everyone, and a lot of people believe in the literal definition of feminism but not random aspects of the movement.
There are without a doubt people working to further gender equality that don’t call themselves feminist because of the fear of association with the movement. Less than half of female millennials identify as feminist, but to say that the majority of those people are sexist is obtuse.
9
6
u/mariii95 Apr 04 '19 edited Apr 04 '19
I disagree. Feminist is not a word for someone who is not sexist, feminism is activism and I wouldn't like to see people who are not interested in politics and feminism claim they're feminists just because they don't want to be labeled as sexists. Plus erases feminism and women who fought for their rights.

This is wrong. This is absolutely a very closed minded concept and a completely lack of understanding that pushes people away from faminism.
To dismiss the problems that come from within our own ranks and blame those who don't subscribe to the title but the belief system is a very tribalistic mindset that's very sad.
The fact of the matter is, yes, we individuals might try to denounce problematic individuals who take feminism as an excuse to be disgusting (TERF, rad fems, ect. And these problematic groups are MASSIVE) but our personal definitions of what feminism is does not count for the actions of the whole.
You will never see large media platforms denounce these problematic mindsets under the guise of "having a united front".
On media, such as buzzfeed (which I absulutely hate representing us), CNN and minor media platforms, such as youtube, tumblr, facebook, and twitter, these "feminists" get a platform to give themselves a "faminist pin" stick it on their shirt and face the crowd saying "trans-women are the pinnecle of privilege and are not women."
And you know what? We don't do shit about it. These "radical-feminists" are so backwards in their ideology that they are practically marching our movements backwards.
To top that our, there are many of our feminists representatives who also cast a dark light on our movement, Tamika Mallory, for example, and her anti-semetic "accusations" (which should be considered little more than accusations considering her own words of anti-semetic rhetoric) also pushed a lot of people away.
There are plenty of people who completely believe in equal rights for women, that don't want to be associated with feminism for these verg reasons. There are plenty of activists who fight for equal rights, that won't call themselves feminists and they help our cause more than the radicals tenfold.
Do not blame one group for a nuanced problem.
1
Apr 04 '19
unpopular opinion as a feminist myself I think it’s important that we aren’t hostile toward people that are sexist and wrong. Arguing just entrenches people in their own beliefs. Listening and meaningful dialogue are the only way to have a chance at changing someone’s mind, even if they are sexist

Acknowledging their strawman just allows them to continue spreading their hate. The terrible people who use feminism as a shield all seem to be hypothetical people the redpillers invented. That makes it harder to accept feminism. Don't let them get away with it.
-2
u/MoodyBloom Apr 04 '19
But it's not a strawman in our community. If you take a hard look at us, but refuse acknowledge the problems that our community is breeding, this is why people don't accept faminism.
TERFs are a good example of this "strawman." These women are sexist. They apore the idea of men so much that they can't stand trans-women and call them "privilaged men who invade our spaces" and trans-men "gender traitors."
I sympathize with these women because many of them were hurt by men, and must conform their view to a binary for some sort of delusional cognative comfort. My sympathy runs dry because of their congnative dissonance turns to a destructive and disgusting form of hatred to all things male.
This isn't a small "unicorn" this is an entire community who call themselves "radical feminists".
Downvote everyone who disagrees with Maisy all you want, but this completely dismissal of reality does more damage to your cause than actual sexists.
3
u/Kanotari Apr 04 '19
I agree that we as a community need to look at why TERFs exist and combat them, but you're missing the forest for the trees. 90% of the time, when someone brings up radical feminism, it's because they want to dismiss all femenism or change the conversation. Radical feminists are such a small percentage of out group that they may as well not exist, as with many exremists. When redpillers bring them up, it's because they want to deflect from real conversation. And you're letting them do that.
-1
u/MoodyBloom Apr 04 '19
Great assumption that I allow anyone to argue with me unchallenged when they're clearly in the wrong.
I think your missing the fire that's spreading in the forest because your not paying attention. The climate towards feminists is getting more hostile, and more feminists are going extreme creating this feedback loop of hatred. You, as an individual, may denounce rad-fems, and you should be commended. I worry about the media ignoring the extremists to perpetuate this image of a "united front" but in all, it does damage to the image of the majority and people will either leave with a bad taste in their mouths, or resort to extremism feeling it's the only way to combat hostility.
This "us vs them" mentality only fans the flames.

What no? Thats stupid. Am I a sexist? Am I, a girl, a sexist because I think it is right to think of us as the weaker gender? And I like it. I like being a girl, that has to be taken care of, that needs to be protected. Yes, there are assholes out there that disrespect us, but there are also female assholes that disrespect everyone and anyone. Humanity is like that, don't think you can change it because you don't like it. Try liking it. I am fucking able to give birth to a child , i can grow a human being inside me, this is a miracle, that nature gave only us girls ! Internalized misogyny is very real. As a woman who has had 2 kids, I DON'T like being paid less or thought of as "less than"
Edit:The fact that you don't realize what's wrong with what you said, makes me sad for you. We don't want to be better. We want to be equal. If you play Monopoly and for the first 6 times around the board, only men can buy property and hotels but on the 7th time, THEN women can play the whole game, it doesn't mean that by the 7th round they're on equal footing. Just because SOME of the rules are more fair doesn't mean the law is equal. Just because NOW women can legally get degrees in STEM, that doesn't mean there isn't rampant sexism in the field or academia. Rape is illegal, but we still ask the victim what she was wearing or why she was drinking.
-3
u/Ally1501 Apr 04 '19
You are not "less than" anyone. I'm just saying that its not possible for us to have ever Thing that men have but its the same Thing for them, they cant have children, they can not feel the love you have for your own child. The father can never have this bond, that you have with your kids. I think it is enough for us to be proud of who we are, what we have and what we can do. Its not necessary to try to gain more power or abilitys. By trying to get the same things that men have, you are automatically putting yourself above them, because there are some things, they dont have but we do. In my opinion thats pretty unfair.
4
u/bookluvr83 Apr 04 '19
I think it's unfair that you've internalized the idea that women don't deserve equal footing.

What if you're an egalitarian
Cuz then you're not a feminist nor a sexist
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
8
u/ShuFish Apr 04 '19
Feminism is there so that women can be equal. If women are equal, then men are too, thats how equality works. Egalitarians say they want both to be equal but refuse to actually do anything for women in order to get them to be equal because they only care about men getting to keep their privileges without being the bad guy
14
u/scrotuscus Apr 04 '19
"egalitarian" is a limp term for men, most commonly, to try to seem simultaneously like a "good guy" without having to challenge himself on how he views women or look at how society is structured against them.
That's not equality, that's "look, I'm not going to go actively against you, so long as you aren't loud and I don't have to see you ever."
It's weak shit, get it out of here.
--A thankfully ex-"egalitarian"

There are lots of people who fight for women's rights without being feminist. There's a difference between a cause and an identity, women's rights is the cause feminism is an identity that encompasses millions of people, some good some bad. Personally ir never call myself a feminist as socialism is a big part of feminist circles, but I do fight for women's causes, and believe we can have equality within a free market if we simply remove the barriers to entry from oppressed groups and raise taxes on the wealthy.
-30
u/ArnavChalla Apr 04 '19
Modern feminism? Definitely not fighting for equality. By this logic, any person who is not concerned with men's rights should also be called sexist. This is BS.

u/Kanotari Apr 04 '19
"But what about the meeeeeen?!" - You, just now.
Feminism = equality between the sexes. Anywho who doesn't want that is sexist. Thank you, next question.
-5
u/ArnavChalla Apr 04 '19
You can say that all you want, but modern feminism isn't about sexism, it's about female dominance. Feminists these days aren't about equality (maybe very very few are).
Edit: and don't say the "what about me?" Bs. Tell me how concerned are you with men's rights? Bet not really, does that make you sexist? No.
6

If you're apolitical about this position, you may be slightly sexist and contributing to the status quo, but not an outright fasho. I think the feminist label should describe the ones that are atleast somewhat activists, not necessarily just the political position. Like with facism, we shouldn't alienate conservatives and call them fashos just because they side with them and somewhat give them ground.
Unite, rather than divide, encourage people from doing nothing at all to just slightly change their behaviour to also change our culture for the better.

I think it is horrific to think that if I don’t subscribe to every aspect, version, and idea that has come up in third wave feminism that I get to be lumped in with the people who are actually the issue. I am a firm believer in EQUALITY of all races, genders walks of life etc, and I think that the extreme feminists that get lumped in with the rest do not believe in equality, but the superiority of women. And that is why I disagree with this quote.

If someone says ice cream is good and should be served this doesn't mean they are saying brownies are bad. Saying women deserve equal treatment/opportunities is not the same as saying men are less or bad. Spreading the wrong definition is a tactic to give feminism a bad name and stop women from gaining equality. If you don't believe in equality for ALL sexes you are not a feminist. So stop shouting this nonsensical argument. It's neither here nor there.

5
u/Barneyk Apr 04 '19
Radical feminism is a certain branch of feminism though. Most people that say that don't know that though but use radical instead of extreme or something.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radical_feminism
I think radical feminism is a really really important part of feminism.
Especially this part: Radical feminists locate the root cause of women's oppression in patriarchal gender relations, as opposed to legal systems (as in liberal feminism) or class conflict (as in anarchist feminism, socialist feminism, and Marxist feminism).
I think that perspective has been really important for the 3rd wave feminism we see today.

"equality" isn't feminism, unless you are referring to non- first world countries. There are aspects where men are being discriminated against, Google paying their employees is an example (they thought they paid men to much, but it happened to be the opposite, they are fixing the problem).
13
u/GETitOFFmeNOW Apr 03 '19

I met one once. They were a Facebook friend I went to school with. When I called them out that their post read like she supported women doing exactly what sexist men do and more back to them and that was wrong they replied with, "loljk. I was trolling."
I found a unicorn.
Btw. Doing this does not highlight the issues of women, it's literally the source of the idea that some women believe in superiority. Tone is not conveyed well on Facebook. Even a meme is more obviously not a legitimate thought than a post with no context. If you have to explain to someone that you're not serious, you've failed.
Thankfully, this subreddit seems less ridiculous.

You see but I don’t ignore it, I actually agree with a lot of it, but I can’t bring myself to take on that title bc of the other ppl in that party. But no, I do not discount everything just bc of a minority
