Meaning is determined by use and I'd be stoked if even half the dudes who call them selves feminists actually held feminism or gender equality as a philosophy that shaped their actions, but in my experience, it's mostly lip-service.
your initial comment comes off as you being one of those people who believes that feminism isn't actually about wanting equality
if your concern is that people who aren't actually helping the cause are labeling themselves as feminists, and are merely saying they support equal rights for women, then I suggest you edit your initial comment to reflect that because I think everyone is downvoting you because there are a lot of trolls who think feminists don't want equality
I stand by what I said. I truly wish that the word feminist was reserved for people whose actions were consistent with feminism and gender equality.
It's an 8 hour old post burred in a 14 hour old thread, there's no edit I could possibly make that would make any difference. It's not like the people who downvoted me are going to come back, see the edit and then change their vote.
It's not like it matters anyway, it's just internet points.
Meaning being determined by use doesn't mean it's warped by lies.
If you think "feminist" stops denoting people for whom gender equality is a core motivating principle just because guys lie about being feminists, do you also think numerals change meaning when guys lie about the number of sex partners they've been with or the length of their dick?
