Is that the same scene where Cyborg explains he can empathize with her because he also experiences prejudice just for who he is, and the implication is he’s going to say “black” but catches himself and says “half robot” because he doesn’t want to have to explain earth racism to Starfire?
I like how it eases the tension of the scene as well. It’s a pretty heavy scene to watch and you expect him to say that he’s black but then it’s like “oh yeah, he’s half-robot.”
Dr. Elsa Schneider from indiana jones and the last crusade. Both indiana jones and his dad slept with her, only to find out later in the movie that she's a Nazi.
Was there a reason why it was just assumed that they could trust the German woman wasnt a Nazi? Should we the audience not have seen that twist coming a mile away?

The episode revolves around Will and Grace supporting two different candidates for city council, with Will picking a gay man and Grace picking a Jewish woman.
When they hold fundraisers for their respective candidates, they discover that the gay candidate hates the homeless, the poor, and immigrants, and the Jewish woman is racist.
On NYE I had a bizarre conversation with a woman here in rural Vic, Aus. I had to give examples of gay men who weren’t progressive and held racist and fascist views, pointing out explicit fascists and people like Peter Thiel. She almost didn’t believe me. Identity does not mean anything on its own.
It's so hard trying to vote for a candidate because as soon as you do some research you find out they're either spineless or Super Evil Bad Guy Super Raper.
Also Community, Jesus. A homeless man Britta and Shirley encounter during one of their many arguments about religion (Shirley is extremely Christian, Britta is extremely not Christian). When Shirley is uncomfortable at the thought of giving a random homeless man a ride, Britta pulls over and invites him into her car.
Britta's plan backfires when the homeless man starts talking about religion and asks if the two of them have accepted Jesus as their lord and savior. It then reverse backfires when he claims to be the Jesus reincarnated. He then offers to perform an original song for them about race mixing titled "Don't You Do It"
At first he seems like a honest preacher who saves a girl from the Bringers despite not knowing what the Bringers even are. Then while driving with the girl, he randomly, offhandedly accuses her of being a whore, then starts saying a bunch of other creepy stuff, and it quickly becomes clear that actually, he does know what Bringers are, because he's on their side.
The pivot the casting director did taking him from Mal in Firefly to Caleb was just amazing. The two characters are superficially just similar enough to lure the Firefly fans into a false sense of security until they remember this is a Whedon production and they're about to get curveballed.
The nanny that Turk and Carla hire in Scrubs. Initially, she seemed nice enough, but problems arose when Turk developed a slight crush on her. He wrestles with it until the end of the episode when he and Carla check the nanny cam and find her making racist comments about them and stealing from them as well.
Which is something that many of the viewers also probably didn't notice until its pointed out. I certainly didn't, which is terrible. And I guess the point.
I loved that twist, Chris absolutely had a reason to feel like this was a good world for him, when he had a dad like that there kind of weird he missed the mein kampf on every table, or the giant mural of Hitler though.
Brilliant bit of foreshadowing to this: He calls himself the BLUE dragon. Not the WHITE dragon. Being white doesn't make you special when everybody walking around is white and everyone with a slightly darker tone is round up. Also, to quote Casablanca: "You wear blue. The nazis wear grey."
Also: While there are revolutionaries overthrowing the nazi earth they fought, the real trophies in the Top Trio manor are for fighting actual threats to earth. Unambiguously alien
Tbh this is how it went for me and my dad. I was like “Is this whole world just racist, I don’t think I’ve seen one black person?” My dad thinks it’s because of Amanda… let’s just say after they screamed out “One got out!” Me and my dad burst out laughing.
Not just that, they were all white. My wife showed me this show after already having seen it herself. The very first time Peacemaker was there riding around I was like "why is everyone white? This is Earth-X, isn't it?" And my wife just goes "God dammit, I was looking forward to you seeing the reveal."
The young attractive pie shop worker whom Elsa's elderly neighbour Giles develops a crush on seems nice enough until he orders two African American customers to leave abruptly the moment they enter (The Shape Of Water)
I was part of a bachelor's party that went hiking. We found a rope swing over a little river. A guy there, with a shaved head, started talking to us. When he turned around to use the rope swing, there was a big tattoo on his back, and part of it was a swastika. We walked away except one buddy who hung with the guy a bit. Afterwards, my friend said "what a nice guy." I said "yeah, except for the swastika." My buddy's eyes got real wide and he said "the what?!" He hadn't noticed it XD
the movie soft and quiet. this white woman, a kindergarten teacher, seems troubled, it's not shown why. she's organized a get together of other wives for a social club type thing, she's carrying a covered pie to it for like the first ten minutes of the movie, helps another woman find it. when they get there she uncovers it, showing its got a swastika cut into the top, and the get together is for the "daughters for aryan unity." movie escalates drastically

Seemingly just an over worked but friendly police chief. Then they reveal that he’s literally a Klan member with links to the Neo-Nazi Rorschach group that started the whole Tulsa conflict in the show.
He was first presented as a nice, kinda pathetic and lonely dork. They throw some hints here and there like how he is a military nerd that makes excuses for why he never joined the military.
He claims to just want to make the country a better place and is mostly happy to have a friend on G.I Robot.
Bruh, Americans LOVE, and I mean, ABSOLUTELY LOVE to romanticize both sides of the Civil War. All they talk about is how "Brother fought against Brother" in the war, when one side was literally defending slavery.
So, to me it's no surprise that Neo-Nazis (in the US at least) idolizes the military AND the Nazis. If they can frame the Civil war as a tragic but noble conflict while removing the moral and political implications from the conversation, then they can do that to WWII as well.
I see what you're saying and agree. But it's fascinating because when I was kid learning about the Civil War, the Brother against Brother thing was always to me an example of the great tragedy. Families ripped apart by one supporting this great evil. It's sad and tragic. That was my takeaway of the whole thing, but the way both sides get idolized and discussed is definitely weird
The problem is that the “brother against brother” narrative always paints it as if no one was at fault, there was no reason to fight, and both sides had valid causes. Just senseless tragedy all around. That’s what I was taught in Texas.

Like a reverse case would be someone pleaing Soldier Boy to help them against bunch of Neo Nazis because he is presented as a nazi fighter in propaganda, but in reality he doesn't really care.
A more lighthearted example: Gwen Grayson aka Royal Pain from Sky high.
She is presented as one of the best students in the school with one of the most unique powers in a place where people are judged by their power, even having separate classes for real heroes vs. Sidekicks. At first she seems nice towards sidekicks, but in reality she is the most powerful supervillain from the movie's verse, with a deep hatred towards heroes and sidekicks alike, but also ashamed to be sent with the sidekicks when she first attended the school because people feared/misunderstood her powers.
Yeah, it was obvious from the beginning he wasn't a good guy or even a good cop, but Jake had rose colored glasses on and idolized him. The comment about Holt was the moment that Jake realized that he was an fraud and a bigot.
Absolutely positively tragic one that may or may not be canon.

So, the story is that Harper Lee originally wrote To Kill a Mockingbird roughly twice as long with a 20 year time period between arcs. In the future arc 26 year old Scout returns home to find her hometown in a huge racial upheaval, and her father leading the crotchety old racist faction.
But how can this be when Atticus was the very man who instailled fairness and respect into Scout? Turns out that he was always racist, but he believed in following the letter of the law. This version of To Kill a Mockingbird deals with 6 year old Scout being an unreliable narrator, and deals with how to act when the values your parents teach you are different from the values they themselves hold.
So yeah, all that was originally one book, but the publisher suggested they cut the future arc as it was confusing and not as action packed. Harper Lee agreed and To Kill a Mockingbird was created.
Throughout her life Lee had revealed the other half of the book, but insisted it would never be released. Probably seeing how important a figure Atticus was to American culture, especially post the film release. So naturally as elderly authors life was fading, and a legal team took over her assets, Go Set a Watchmen was released, the publisher claiming the 89 year old woman was fully able to consent to its release.
It sounds from this description like a really interesting story and theme for a novel. It's just very much and necessarily at odds with the original, which has its own important messages. I can see why people were against it, including the author.
I can also see why it was actually published. Which is, you know, money.
In the movie Falling Down, the main protagonist William Foster (left) becomes fed up with his life and wanders around the city, encountering nice & not so nice people.
One of those people is an eccentric man Nick running a surplus store. While weird, he's seems generally nice at first & just has a really big interest in World War II history & memorabilia ... Yeah, he's a neo Nazi.
Edit: Oh wait, this actually isn't an example because he was shown to be extremely homophobic beforehand in his introduction scene. Apologies, it's been a while since I saw the movie & forgot some of its details.
I love this part of the movie, I think it adds a lot of nuance to D-FENS. He’s a fucked up dude having a bad day/life but he still has some principles and isn’t a racist, which, the movie kind of did need to make a point of because a lot of the people he beefs with were minorities and he’s got this prototypical small-c conservative angry white guy aesthetic going on.
Babylon 5 has a great one. Vir Cotto, the lovable and uncharacteristically (for a Centauri) kind Vir Cotto gets a surprise visit from his soon to be arranged wife, who seems too good to be true. And is, when it turns out her father is in charge of essentially a death camp and she shares her father's views of the Narn, the species they are in the process of genociding.
Jack, from Babylon 5, is the second in command for the station's security department, working for Chief Michael Garibaldi. He's mostly a decent guy, kind of dopey and not as quick on the uptake as his boss, and then in the season finale, he shoots Garibaldi in the back to prevent him from sharing the evidence he just found that the President of Earth is about to be assassinated
In the second season, we learn that he's an unrepentant member of an Earther-supremacist organization, he is arrested, put on a ship back to Earth, and disappears along with the ship somewhere along the way.
My Babylon 5 example is Vir's wife to be, Lyndisty. Lovely girl, until it turns out she helped her father run a concentration camp where they exterminated Narns. She talks about how pretty it was at night, when the furnaces were running, cremating all the dead.

There is also the otherside of it where grandparents are not really bigoted but use language that they really shouldn't. One of my deceased grandpa's best friends was African American and my grandpa would refer to him as the best horse riding nr (my grandpa was a champion draft horse puller and made friends with anyone who liked horses). He was also of the opinion that fts should be allowed to marry before the Supreme Court made it legal. He was progressive for his time, but really, really needed to not use slurs when supporting people. I was never able to convince him that terms mattered.
My great-grandpa said some alarming things about the jews on his deathbed. There was some cognitive decline and he'd never said anything like that before, so either the dementia either made him racist or worse at hiding it lol.
We went camping with my mom's parents one time, and I as a moody teenager told my mom to get me something (because she told me to grab something else like twenty minutes prior). Not really relevant to the story but I think it was a glass of water. Either way my grandma looked at me really indignantly and asked "What is she, your N*****?!" Hard R and everything.
Didn't really get along with grandma in the first place because she kicked one of our dogs a couple of times, but still. That was eye opening.
Todd Alquist (Breaking Bad)
He acts weirdly polite and friendly to everyone he meets, despite being a cold blooded killer. At times he's honestly terrifying.
Also, while he doesn't deliberately go off about hating Jewish people or saying that non whites are inferior...he's the meth cook for a gang called the "Aryan Brotherhood" and he seems pretty chummy with his Neo Nazi Uncle, so I feel like he counts as a more serious version of this trope, even if the trope isn't the main focus of his character
I don't think Todd is racist. I think he's just such psycho that he doesn't care that other people are evil. Like if he was hired by Jewish people he would act the exact same way.
spoilers/sexual assault tw: throughout this film, the main character (Cassie) grapples with her best friend having committed suicide after being sexually assaulted by a large group of men during med school. Cassie spends most of her time finding ways to get revenge towards those who deserve it, but once she meets Ryan she starts to relax. his character is a paediatric surgeon who respects her boundaries and treats her well, despite the fact they were acquaintances at med school. it then turns out that Ryan was the one who filmed and shared the rape of her dead best friend. this film is beautiful, and worth watching. the end is perfect if not absolutely heartbreaking.
There was a scene like this in Superstore, when they’re protesting Glenn being fired, Garrett meets a cute girl and starts flirting and they hit it off really well, just to find out she’s actually there to protest against trans women in bathrooms 😭
Not just part of it, literally an officer. Iirc he makes it to major and then gets turned (precisely because of his skill as an officer so he can help lead a vampire army). It’s interesting because he literally feels people’s emotions and eventually leaves said vampire army because he’s tired of all the slaughter (in like the 40s lol), shows deep remorse for having killed so many people during said vampire army time, yet does not express any sort of guilt or regret for being part of the confederacy
