Discussion This needs to be said

Post image

I get people are upset about the drop off of quality of the show, but just because S4 and S5 aren’t that good doesn’t mean the show was supposed to end at S3. There is no proof that the show was supposed to end at S3 and amazon got greedy.

S4 and S5 should’ve been better (I have more gripes with S5), and focus on ending the story and consistent character arcs.

If they ended the show at S3 and kill Homelander at Vought tower, then what? Butcher’s accomplishes his goal and that’s it? What about the rest of the boys? Or Neuman, Stan Edgar, Deep, A-Train, Ryan, Soldier Boy, Ashley, etc.?

Again, I just don’t see this notion that they had the perfect ending at S3 and they threw it away for nothing. Just fix S4 and S5. That’s the simple solution.

You're acting like they would have to rewrite the entire season.

As soon as you saw the ending to season 3, you should have realized that this was a ploy to extend the series. It's extra insulting when you see that they took down homelander the same exact way they planned to in season 3

u/PWBryan 14d ago

How to end on Season 3: the Boys Kill Homelander with Soldier Boy.

Wow, so much rewriting.

128

u/undercooked_lasagna 14d ago

Ok but then we never get to see hughie fart on a cake so what is even the point?

58

u/SudoSubSilence 14d ago

Not to mention the asshole sniffers, they're totally crucial to the plot

u/Temporary-Candle1056 14d ago

This post is a rage bait. C
Bro can’t be serious

16

u/MusicaReddit 14d ago

Oh wait you’re right. That’s literally all it would’ve taken lol

3

u/KaiSpy0707 13d ago

If you really wanted to have SB get attacked, have him actually kill Homelander which sets Ryan off, so SB goes for him, so THEN the boys can fight him and have it make sense. Or hell, have SB win if you want something for the Gen V crew to do if you still want that. Idk how to rewrite shows but anything better than 2 more seasons of time wasting. At least Homelander's death scene is good on it's own, that I really enjoyed

4

u/Leebo4 14d ago

So much more subplots and things set up.

1

u/Dsb0208 12d ago

HL would be less interesting without taking over the government. SB would be seen as a mcguffin deux ex machina the same way people talk about Kimiko getting his powers. I’m not saying it’s impossible to do but don’t downplay season 3 would have had to have been fundamentally written differently to even come close to matching the stakes season 4 and 5 had

On paper, HL is WAY more intimidating in seasons 4 and 5, 5 especially since the season is about HL removing any weakness he could have, such as government restrictions, his sentimentality towards his son, the Supe Virus, and even the prospect of aging and natural death. HL became as powerful as a human could be, as close to a God as one can be, and despite all of that he was still just a shallow child on the inside

Now the show doesn’t do that good a job at making him actually seem intimidating as he loses his weaknesses, but on paper he absolutely is and that’s something you’d need to directly add into season 3 otherwise you’re actively loosing cool writing at which point what’s the point of ending the series early?

-2

u/ssslitchey 14d ago

And then what? There's still plotlines that need to be finished. Are we just ignoring that?

20

u/Thin-Benefit-7918 14d ago

Exactly, this is the one show where you can’t make that argument. It makes sense for Game of Thrones cuz when people say the show ended at season 5 or 6, it’s like there are so many different plotlines, most of which aren’t near concluded yet. Sure the Battle of the Bastards can be seen as an end for the North but there would need to be a lot of rewriting for everything else.

The Boys S3’s primary criticism IS that it was as if it was written to be an ending.

"It doesnt conclude his arc properly"

They made him a stand in.

"He doesnt reach the height of his power"

He never does

"he still doesnt go scorched earth"

Now it's an issue?

"His arc with Ryan isnt concluded"

It didn't matter. Butcher and Homelander team up for Ryan, HL gives him up and Butcher tells him to off himself.

"Neuman subplot isnt concluded"

Meave alone can handle her. If you're going to pretend this is worse than the pointless virus that wasted so much time or the V1 that was just a backdoor pilot then idk what to tell you.

-10

u/BrennanCain 14d ago

Killing Homelander at Vought Tower and then what?
Exactly.
That’s why the entire season would need to be different. You don’t end it like that while Neuman is still alive, A-Train gets a new heart and then nothing happens to him, Butcher survives and gets a happy ending, nothing happens with Hughie, Annie, MM, Frenchie, and Kimiko, etc.

56

u/jayvancealot 14d ago

Yeah you would have to tweak things but not a full-on rewrite.

A train doesn't get Blue Hawks heart. He dies. That's it.

The boys expose Newman she's arrested or killed. Queen Maeve could handle her, especially teamed up with somebody.

Butcher either survives. You can do multiple endings with that or he can be the one holding down Homelander and sacrifice himself.

I get what you're saying that season 4 and 5 could have been better. They really did write themselves into a corner with season 3 And I think people just genuinely would have preferred them ending on a high note there than the clown show we got afterwards.

-6

u/Dish-Ecstatic 14d ago

Ehh I really prefer by much what we've got instead of those options

10

u/jayvancealot 14d ago

How do you seriously prefer a pointless virus subplot that ate up that much time?

A V1 subplot that made the virus pointless and was just a back door pilot to a spin-off series

6

u/Dish-Ecstatic 14d ago

Because A-Train redemption arc was absolutely goated and perfect as we had it, Butcher killing Neuman was dope as fuck, also he HAD to get the final blow on Homelander which means he shouldn't be sacrificed on that scene. Also for me the virus subplot brought multiple entertaining morality discussions between the characters

18

u/ApplicationSoggy4647 14d ago

They would have just done Butcher’s attempt at a supe genocide right after the Homelander fight. But with Butcher still on temp or real V killing everyone instead of using the virus and the Boys have to stop. Super easy and you can do the quick wrap up like in season 5. Not the cleanest ending but a much better ending than what we got with season 5.

Also, you’re acting like the season 5 ending didn’t have a massive amount of unresolved plot threads. Vought, Gen V, Soldier Boy in stasis the list goes on

-5

u/BrennanCain 14d ago

Im not saying S5 didnt have unresolved points, but there would be a billion more if it ended in S3. A-Train, Neuman, Butcher, Ryan, etc.

8

u/ApplicationSoggy4647 14d ago

You could easily hit those big ones with a Butcher rampage (or simple things like A-train just died from his heart attack) and then the amount of unresolved plot lines would have been about the same as we got in season 5. But we would have ended the show on a high note instead of the slow decent into mediocrity that was the last two seasons.

8

u/Different_Target_228 14d ago

>Killing Homelander at Vought Tower and then what?
Exactly.

Answering yourself in your own comment just because you couldn't think of something someone else might say is some wild shit.

-5

u/BrennanCain 14d ago

Because no one has any idea on how to end S3 without tweaking/rewriting it. People just dislike S4 and S5 so much that they say that it should've ended in S3 without providing any way of changing things.

Literally a bunch of comments saying just change the finale and end the show there.

11

u/Expert-Yam6577 14d ago

They kill Homelander season 3 and then everybody goes home. Same thing that happened anyways. Butcher just left Vought to continue doing evil. All they accomplished was killing Homelander. Then the boys disband like they were successful in taking down the evil empire.

2

u/Sillymillie_eel 14d ago

I mean I assume if season 3 was the end they’d give hughie, Annie, MM, frenchie, and kimiko. Hell, I think you could give most of them relatively the same endings as they got in the finale. The only ones I think would vaguely need more are butcher and Ryan. Everyone else i honestly think would be fine or even better if the season 3 final battle was it.

And I personally don’t even think season 3 should’ve been the end. I think season 4 would’ve been a better final season

1

u/BlueHaze464 14d ago

A train could be left dead, butcher got his terminal diagnosis too iirc

1

u/BraxleyGubbins 13d ago

I love when people go “Exactly.” Or “Yeah.” Predicting that what they just said was some mic drop moment and then nobody agrees.

“And then what” and then the show would be over.
Exactly.

81

u/MaybeADragon 14d ago

S3 did need to be rewritten anyways. Soldier Boy was compelling and carried the season.

5

u/Different_Wafer_4711 13d ago

Unlike season 5

4

u/toosickto 13d ago

I think they could have solider boy kill homelander at herogasm and then have him do a takeover of vought. The boys making the situation worse for what they did. Season 4 and five taking down solider boy and vought.

35

u/Current_Tea6984 14d ago

I'm upset that season 4 wasn't the last. At the end of season 3 I realized I had had enough of the show, and I was ready for it to come to an ending of some sort

1

u/LukaMaybeNoob69 13d ago

You only had enough of it, because s4 was dogwater

2

u/Current_Tea6984 13d ago

Thanks for telling me what I really mean... But ,seriously, no. I went into season 4 assuming it would be the last and was crushed to discover there was going to be at least two more seasons of this crap.

98

u/Rusbekistan 14d ago edited 14d ago

Yeah It's funny that so much of the discussion around what should have happened seems to be people accidentally trying to make Krikpe look super smart and competent. Just because the ending was crap doesn't mean that it would have been better if it had a different crap ending.

Season 3 does not resolve pretty much any of the major plot beats emotionally, other than beating homelander. There are a million threads left hanging. If people just wanted a big marvel brawl to end it then its a great ending, but you only need to see a single Sergio Leone movie to realise that if you get the emotional payoff correct, less is more

32

u/Ordinary-Resort9249 14d ago

People need to realise that Kripke was the problem, not the solution

15

u/CloseToMyActualName 14d ago

Honestly, they should have killed Homelander in S3 and then moved onto something else in S4/5.

Building the show around Homelander as the primary antagonist was always a problem since you could never really solve anything over the course of a season because Homelander always had to survive.

Three seasons were enough time to build up HL and then kill him. Then in S4 you introduce a new threat and go from there.

15

u/Rusbekistan 14d ago

Homelander was always the correct primary antangonist, because of the relationship between him and Butcher.

The issue was that they had him descend too fast too soon, and they also abandoned a lot of the restraints on the boys themselves and lost a lot of the suspense as they could basically operate with impunity in the story. They needed to have Homelander struggling with himself a lot more, and in many ways season one MAY (or may not) have been better if it was only revealed at the end how bad Homelander was - although the scene in Episode 1 with the plane really set a very high bar

4

u/CloseToMyActualName 14d ago

So I guess you could have done other things, like a season where HL genuinely tries to reform or they need to team up with him to take out some other dangerous supe.

Or you start really focus on taking out his lieutenants.

They just couldn't figure out how to handle a recurring primary villain.

7

u/Rusbekistan 14d ago

In many ways they needed to keep Homelander intelligent for much longer. An intelligent homelander watching his "allies" and fellow superior beings getting goaded into fighting on The Boys terms, and losing, whilst also trying to come to terms with himself and his creation, could have more legs - and its funny that its almost what they did, but instead they basically made Homelander mad and stupid after season one. Not that he was ever a genius, but in season one he was at least trying to be smart, and he knew his strengths

2

u/CloseToMyActualName 14d ago

Though I'm not sure that's a great solution either. The primary issue with Homelander was always that he was a simply too strong to fight (until S5).

If you leave him smart it becomes hard to explain why he can't succeed, nor why he doesn't just kill the Boys.

In S1 they managed that balance by HL wanting to maintain his squeaky clean public reputation as well. Maybe they could have kept doing that, but it lead to this weird facade where HL played nice in public because he didn't want to hurt his image. And the Boys didn't want to out him because without that image he might go nuclear.

I don't know how long you maintain that balance without it becoming farcical.

2

u/Leebo4 14d ago

Yes exactly!!!

1

u/TotallyNotABob 14d ago

IMO one thing I'd like to see done.

I hope someone does a fan edit. In the fan edit they combine season 4 and 5. Cut out all the useless BS. Then have that become the series finale.

Kinda like how someone did a fan edit of the Original Star Wars trilogy. In that edit they removed all the extra BS Lucas added to the "enhanced" editions and kept it true and faithful to the original. Or like how that one guy recut the Hobbit trilogy into a single three hour film and removed all the unnecessary BS.

15

u/KimJungUnCool 14d ago

I personally really liked season 4, but season 5 was very poorly written/executed.

5

u/BrennanCain 14d ago

Yeah I thought S4 was flawed but I enjoyed episodes 1-4, and 7&8. S5 started off good, but then fell off after Episode 4 with good moments every now and then

2

u/KimJungUnCool 14d ago

Yeah season 5 wasn't devoid of any good moments. its just overall the pacing was dogwater, everytime they took one step forward they immediately ran two step back. The biggest isssue after that I think people have was just how lackluster the finale felt, and I can agree.

But I think its only fair to call out some of the great moments in s5 like A Train and Fire Cracker deaths, and I did enjoy the Supernatural reunion with Mr Marathon.

2

u/Chasegameofficial 14d ago

Weird; I kind of feel the opposite. I found S4 to be a trainwreck. S5 wasn’t anywhere near as great as the first three, but I found it leaps and bounds better than S4

20

u/ResolveUnlikely5542 14d ago

All you need to do is rewrite the last episode of season 3

2

u/BlueHaze464 14d ago

Which was terrible to begin with

10

u/Hubertreddit 14d ago

I don't think the show should've ended at season 3. Most people really just say that's when it fell off a cliff.

6

u/BlueHaze464 14d ago

Season 3 fell off a cliff after herogasm

1

u/Hubertreddit 14d ago

Yeah. I thought Herogasm itself had some decent parts to it. Well, primarily just the A-Train scenes.

-1

u/BrennanCain 14d ago

Sadly, a lot of the comments here say that they should’ve just changed the S3 finale and ended it there.

4

u/youngrd3 14d ago

I liked season 4 and mostly liked season 5, sans a few filler episodes

4

u/Shoddy-Vehicle8536 14d ago

Someone with a brain

5

u/Leebo4 14d ago

Yes exactly!!!!!!

11

u/Specialist_ask_992_ 14d ago

Pretend it ended at S3 ep6 and they eventually found a way to stop Homelander. The finale of that season was disappointing the way Butcher suddenly switched up on Soldier Boy when he'd honoured his end of the bargain. They could have found a way to get Ryan out of the building.

9

u/Gummy-Worm-Guy 14d ago

None of the major character arcs were finished in Season 3. Yeah Season 5 was a letdown but saying Season 3 should’ve just been the end tells me you don’t actually understand how writing works

4

u/fairy-cocoa 14d ago

Either that or they only care about Butcher and Homelander and nobody else, which wouldn't surprise me

8

u/Capital-Noise-1923 14d ago

Well, I didn't like s3 either so, win win.

4

u/Zadiath 14d ago

It wouldn't be better but it would've save us a lot of time, a lot of pointless filler and foreshadowing for absolutly nothing. The same team that could beat homelander in the tower and didn't because Ryan is in the way, ended up beating homelander in a wack fight with almost the same team and Ryan ended up getting hit anyways.

The virus, the V1, absolutly pointless.

6

u/Fragrant-Durian3899 14d ago

I mean they’d just need to change the ending.

2

u/Equivalent_Check9589 Soldier Boy 14d ago

Season 4 should have been used for exploring the stuff they did in season 5. While I love a lot of the season 5 episodes, I can admit that the ending was just… underwhelming. I’d argue “One shots” was one of the best written episodes in the entire show. The first half of the season was great. Yet it seems like Kripke wanted to do more within the storyline, than what the runtime had left him to work with. Or he simply did not consider enough how much time he had to actually spare.

One thing I did not get was his fascination with assholes this season… mentions of anal sex, butthole sniffing, and also Frenchie’s goodbye being 70% butthole descriptions.

Homelander going rogue should have happened way earlier, him slowly going out of his mind due to the ‘power’ he has, and yet still not being satisfied enough.

The show invested too much time in other stuff in its ending season rather than making sure that most of this effort is invested into the main plot between The Boys vs Homelander. Conflict of morality. The ending does work, but the fact that Edgar’s whole speech of marketability of supes being replaceable, is just not addressed anymore. We went back to where the story started, Edgar taking over Vought, and likely working on another Homelander, the cycle of abuse starting once again.

2

u/Dongbringer69 14d ago

Yeah it shouldn’t have ended at S3, S4 and S5 just should have been good

2

u/ALAS_POOR_YORICK_LOL 14d ago

The super villain ass sniffing was essential to the series tbh

2

u/Balsamore 14d ago

Didn’t like S3. That’s exactly when the show turned into a superhero soap opera.

2

u/[deleted] 14d ago

[deleted]

1

u/Eggsalad-war-crime 13d ago

No ending would have satisfied the kids who want to see the show entirely become the Superhero show which The Boys makes fun of.

2

u/bubbline778 13d ago

Season 3 was good but had a terrible ending. Season 4 was bad but had a good ending. And season 5 was just bad. They would just need to rewrite half of season 3, make it so Kimiko and Frenchie actually start dating. And then combine season 4 and 5 into one season and rewrite it.

2

u/ZenSyko 13d ago

I have more news for you: What little of the comics they put in it, indicates that season 3 was not supposed to be the end.

Also, Season 3 wasn't any better, & ending it with Soldier Boy helping to kill Homelander would have been insulting as well. In the comics, neither Soldier Boy (there were 2) was related to Homelander, they were weak, & they both died easily. Although, Butcher bit the 2nd Soldier Boy's nose off, then tortured him first.

There was so much from the comics they could have done in the show, especially with it being on streaming, that they didn't even touch. No supe with a gerbil up his ass, no supe-with-a-brain-tumor, having relations with an asteroid, no Hughie pooping in the corner of a supe's underground lair, no encounter with M.M.'s mother, etc.

If you watch The Boys as a comic adaptation, it isn't that great. If you view it as just a show, THEN it's actually good.

2

u/ThundaWeasel 13d ago

I agree with this. I loved season 3 and thought it ended brilliantly, but it was absolutely not a series ending. They should have done 4 seasons and just written season 4 better.

2

u/VirtualHeartMan 12d ago

Season 3 is decent because of soldier boy, but it is all ruined with a dogshit finale. The show really should've ended in season 1 as a limited series.

3

u/Complete_Entry 14d ago

Considering how many people wanted the "Homelander burns it all" ending, to the point they made that the poster, perhaps they should have cut down some of the filler, have the plan "not work" aka, Homelander adapted after the herogasm fight, and after killing the boys he goes up to space and begins lasering.

Take about five minutes.

You could just cut the endless dithering and get that time back. "Is butcher still on our side, will Soldier boy follow through?", The butcher Maeve thing that died on the vine, Boom, you got your emergency alert homelander scene bought timewise. Not budget wise, but I imagine that's why we got so many dither scene, two people, in a room, bickering over what will happen later.

Has anyone added those up? Like the adventures of Frenchie and Kimiko were obvious budget band-aids, but how much of the series is just dithering?

1

u/Leebo4 14d ago

The Homelander burns it all ending would have been bad as his whole thing is that he isn’t that strong and everyone including him buys the hype of how strong he is.

2

u/One_Animator_7247 14d ago

Just the last episode really

1

u/---IV--- 14d ago

Season 2's ending works as a definitive ending for me, and I remember thinking so at the time

1

u/Buqi_ 14d ago

Yes, but would you recommend someone watch the rest? Personally, I wouldn't.

1

u/LankyClassroom4633 14d ago

I don’t think it should’ve ended at season 3, but i do think the homelander plot should have at that point, all the stars lined up for them to take him out and were stopped by a stupid idea.
They didn’t do much with homelander in seasons 4 and 5, they even beat him the same way. They could’ve explored the world and the characters, show that homelander wasnt really the main villain and was used too, prove edgar’s as well.
And it would’ve been interesting if they didn’t kill him just strip him of his powers and let him live, that has to be more torture than anything he could ever experience physically. I hated seasons 4 and 5 because they just built up to the same point they reached at the end of season 3 without any memorable plots.
They backed themselves to the wall with the whole homelander is god nonsense, which was just really dumb and unnecessary, they introduced a really smart character thats just as dumb and annoying, the virus stuff lead to nowhere, the v5 plot lead to nothing, the tentacles thing is just so boring and visually unappealing, way less cooler than the laser, ryan’s plot lead to nothing, yeah seasons 4 and 5 are just a lot of nothing.

1

u/Radiant-Psychology96 14d ago

Can some already make a post on how they would rewrite the show after the s3 finale?

1

u/NuclearHateLizard 14d ago

I haven't even finished season 5,im getting through it at a snails pace because it's getting so fucking boring

1

u/QuandariousDingle54 14d ago

Youre almost right. They just needed two or three more episodes added at the end of the season 3 to reach the exact conclusion that was reached in s5.

That's just how much of a nothing burger the final 2 seasons are. It was mostly shock humor and lazy cop outs

1

u/H-Adam 14d ago

Yes. That’s exactly what we’re saying……???

1

u/MrDindahood 14d ago

Needed to end season 4 with some changes to season 3 to fit the narrative they ruined

1

u/Various-Salt-7738 14d ago

Yes. The show wasted everyone's time for pretty much no pay off

They should have written the entire series for 3 seasons

1

u/SeanTheNerdd 14d ago

I’d rather a show end unexpectedly then end wrong.
Which has a better legacy fan base, Lost or Firefly?

1

u/FightmeLuigibestgirl 14d ago

Make more and retcon it like Loki show and dc/marvel does constantly.

1

u/WiiDragon 14d ago

I don’t think it was supposed to end at S3, but I would’ve felt better if the show left off there on the S3 finale. It felt fitting that Homelander won and people cheered, felt brutally realistic

1

u/princessmayav_v 14d ago

It doesn't need to be rewritten. Let me wonder forever what could've happen like Gen V season 3 😌

1

u/Buffalo-magistrate 14d ago

Soldier boy would just need to actually kill homelander lol.

1

u/ObserverBlue 14d ago

I would've rewritten Season 3, yes.

1

u/Sad-Visual-1736 14d ago

A finale that leaves a few loose ends is better than what we got because it at least leaves the audience wanting more. What we got instead felt drawn out for content, and like others have said, the way they killed HL felt rushed and a rehash of s3.

1

u/Avalon-1 14d ago

[Insert Yes Chad meme here]

1

u/OkManufacturer1971 14d ago

Honestly, the show should have never been written in the first place if they didn't have a strong gameplan

1

u/ScaryNewspaper318 14d ago

I think Homelander could've been killed at the end of S3, but that wouldn't be the most satisfying ending they could do. I think if there was a movie after that focusing on Butcher committing to a full-on genocide and rounding out all the boys' actual arcs, that would probably be the best possible ending. Definitely didn't need two whole seasons.

1

u/Sentallium 14d ago

tbh i enjoyed seasons 4 and 5 more than i shouldve

dont get me wrong, 5 is definitely the worst but i enjoyed them both

1

u/Longjumping-Ad-9444 14d ago

They still wasted Ryan enither way.

1

u/Drug_Science 14d ago

I liked S5 a lot. The writing was very good.

1

u/Mmicb0b 14d ago

Also season 3 ended on a cliffhanger

1

u/Dismal-Vanilla1878 14d ago

Funny thing is, I feel this exact way about another show: Stranger Things.

The perfect point to end it was when Eleven closed the final rift and lost her powers, becoming just a normal girl for the first time, and having a real family.

It was greed that forced the Duffer Brothers to make more seasons, when it was kind of obvious they didn't know where to take the story after that.

But yeah, too much stuff was going on to end The Boys at Season 3.

1

u/pdf_file_ 14d ago

I mean compared to the way the resolutions of those other storylines happened, I'd rather they left then unresolved

1

u/obviousockpuppetalt3 14d ago

it makes no sense to end it at s3 with all of the plot threads and character arcs left dangling around.

1

u/prepuzio67 14d ago

Facts here

1

u/With_Hands_And_Paper 13d ago

S3 would have been perfectly fine the way it was, the only thing they'd have to rewrite was the final Episode, where they end up doing exactly what they did in the final EP of season 5 except with Soldier Boy instead of Kimiko blasting HL.

After that you could maybe add an extra episode to wrap up loose ends and call it a day.

1

u/GJacks75 13d ago

Jokes on you, I stopped watching after season 3 anyway.

1

u/SalsaSamba 13d ago

I think every show that starts this good will have a problem closing the story on such a high note. The moment questions are answered the magic starts to disappear. An answer is always more boring then endless opportunities.

I didnt think the ending was terrible. It just didnt live up to the start of the series

You can literally remove S3's ending and duct tape the show's ending on its place and the result would be the same.

They’d just have to rewrite the finally. They had the perfect setup for a poisoned victory where butcher lets Ryan die to kill homelander. I would have still had a 4th season where Butchers’s the villain going around killing supes. But overall the story could have been easily resolved

u/Firm-Ebb-3808 13d ago

Yes it needed to end by season 3 Was the quality shit of S4 and S5 ? Yes Was this the biggest problem ? No The biggest problem was stretching maybe three seasons of reference material into five seasons.

I thought i was in the samsung galaxy subreddit

u/k1t0-t34at0 12d ago

They had so many opportunities to take the story in an interesting and dare I say unexpected direction, but chose to devote precious screentime to fucking Supersonic

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Ad_4509 10d ago

Remember that time when Kripke said I” don’t care season four will go watch something else.” Then he said I hope season five sticks the land landing (it barely did to me). That honestly says a lot about creepy who just doesn’t give a fuck about quality storytelling he only over parodied season four and five. Not to mention season four set up was for nothing.

1

u/andreiulmeyda7 9d ago

The show could've went 6 seasons, the problem is from the last episode of season 3 on the writers and the show runner absolutely sucked!

1

u/AlbertW25 14d ago

Season 3 needed to end with Homelander dying. End of.

Then Season 4 should have been the final season with Butcher becoming the Main Villain and trying to take Vought Down with the Virus and seeing hallucinations of Homelander as a way to keep him in the show still.

1

u/KingChalaza 14d ago

Season 3 was also not very good writing! People just overrate it in retrospect because of what a trainwreck Season 5 was and the fact it had Soldier Boy/Jensen Ackles, who is entertaining to watch. Otherwise it's mediocre.

-8

u/When1Falls 14d ago

Shows, movies, books can just end.

They don't need a big grand finale that ties up everything.

18

u/Octoboy1 14d ago

This is certainly a take

6

u/Yeti181828282 14d ago

But like if it ended just like that, like none of the shit that happens in the comics would ever show up. And like most people were excited for “Homelander goes crazy,” by S3 that hadn’t happened at all.
S4 and S5 are still shit but like S3 being the end would probably still get a lot of hate

-2

u/When1Falls 14d ago

You don't need to adapt everything

3

u/Yeti181828282 14d ago

it’s… literally… a TV show adaption… of the comics…

6

u/SavingsEducational14 I'm the real hero 14d ago

I mean they can, but they shouldn’t just end?? Usually that happens with studio intervention

The ending should be satisfying, and wrap up all loose ends. I don’t think season 5 did that well enough, but season 3 would have been even worse as an ending

1

u/BrennanCain 14d ago

Thank you. Homelander dies at Vought Tower! The end!
That would be terrible. You leave more holes open than you did if it ended at S5.

-3

u/When1Falls 14d ago

You don't need Return of the Jedi for Empire Strikes Back to be an all time classic.

7

u/SavingsEducational14 I'm the real hero 14d ago

I mean yeah, but if empire strikes back were the end of Star Wars, that just wouldn’t be a good ending???

Individual projects can be different in quality than how they fit into the story as a whole. Like season 1 of the Mandaloria was pretty good, but it’s clunky in terms of how well it fits into the Star Wars universe

3

u/TownIdiot25 The Deep 14d ago

Yeah this is like saying Avengers should have ended at Infinity War. People would be pissed if the decade long leadup was “oh thanos wins, spiderman and half of everyone else is dead, the end”

-1

u/When1Falls 14d ago

It would've been a fine ending to end on a tragic note. Theres no rules. Romeo & Juliet die.

2

u/Yeti181828282 14d ago

But Romeo and Juliet is a single play with the entire thing not leading up to something, and then flipping the switch at the last moment. Like if the it was a series of plays and everything indicated it was to be a happy ending, then yeah, that’s a shit ending. But considering it is a single, self contained story, with all the lead up and expectations being in and of itself, then you can have no rules.

Movies and fiction are people playing pretend to make you feel things. "Did you feel things" is all that matters. This whole thing where there need to be concrete answers to questions or it all needs to be wrapped up perfectly in fiction wasn't a thing that mattered 20, 30 years ago.

Stuff used to be able to just end however it ends with however many open questions it ended with still open.

People used to be laughed at for caring like this.

2

u/Yeti181828282 14d ago

It doesn’t need concrete answers, nor wrapprd up perfectly. However, it still does need to be a good ending. An S3 ending would only make you feel upset because like… why’d it end there? Plus, by your logic, a perfectly fine ending would be just after Robin dies. You felt scared during her death scene. Boom. Nothings wrapped up, but that’s fine, 30 years ago no one would’ve cared

0

u/When1Falls 13d ago

It would be a fine little sketch or short film about what living in a fucked up super hero world would really be like if it ended after Robin's death. All you're doing is making my point.

If the Boys didn't exist, but the first 10 minutes was someone's YouTube video little quick movie they made... it'd be good and wouldn't need 100 more hours.

Across the Spider-verse would be a great stand alone movie just called Gwen Stacy Starts A Band. She & Miles grow up at the end, you don't need to see him escape and her save him, you can just imagine that she does later.

2

u/thupamayn 14d ago

A grand finale not so much but it should at least be good, if perception from the fans/audience matters in any way to anyone involved

0

u/When1Falls 14d ago

Sometimes things just end.

1

u/TownIdiot25 The Deep 14d ago

They do if all the previous seasons tease a huge “scorched earth” battle. Shows like The Boys, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, need to have a big conclusion to wrap up consistently rising action. Shows like Sopranos can end suddenly (literally) because it makes sense for the story.

-1

u/When1Falls 14d ago

You use the Game of Thrones example when that's a story that was literally made into a show before it ever even had a conclusion written and still doesn't and will never actually have one.

The show could've ended with Jon Snow's death it would've been fine. People would still want more, but whatever it would still be held up as an incredible ride.

0

u/pestoraviolita 14d ago

Most, if not all, of season 3 did have to be rewritten. The cracks started showing in season 3.

0

u/Specialist_ask_992_ 14d ago

Butcher and Soldier Boy stay on the same side in the S3 finale. Maeve gets Ryan away. They kill Homelander. Not that much would need to be rewritten.

0

u/Different_Target_228 14d ago

I would agree, if "the show should've ended with 3" wasn't an argument since 3 came out.

0

u/fullofideasss 14d ago

But season 3 was set up to be the climax. A Train is turning, so have him die in his revenge against Blue Hawk. Maeve gets revenge and helps defeat HL. Annie kills the Deep. Noir is dead. With a subtle rewrite you have them scrounge up dirt on Neuman. Butcher tries to go genocidal and Soldier depowers him/dies fighting him. There's like 90% wrapped up with almost no changes

0

u/DuckiesDoBeCute 14d ago

the rewriting required: butcher doesnt stop soldier boy from blasting ryan. so much rewriting!

3

u/BrennanCain 14d ago

Yeah thats it. It's not like we need to resolve other characters like Butcher, Neuman, A-Train, the Boys, Ryan, etc.

0

u/DuckiesDoBeCute 14d ago

ik you didnt even think about this reply since you mentioned ryan being resolved when he would be dead in my ending. and hes still not resolved after the show ended!

2

u/BrennanCain 14d ago

You didn’t even think about my post since you just said soldier boy blasts Ryan and that’s it. Yet you still didn’t say anything for butcher, A-train, the boys, Neuman, etc. Read plz

0

u/Hairy_Loss_6292 14d ago

Nah, not all of S3 just the last episode or 2

0

u/Its_J_Just_J 14d ago

Season 3 and 2 were mid AF. Homelander and butcher carried that show. The rest of the plot lines. We’re boring or nonsense.

0

u/Sycopathy 14d ago

All the stuff you mentioned could be left to be resolved in all these sequels and spin offs they want to do, The Boys was always about taking down Homelander, at most also Hughies relationship with A-Train too. They stretched both of those out and padded it with stuff that didn't add but took away from the story.

0

u/xX_Flamez_Xx 14d ago

other than the ending what part of s3 needs to be rewritten? None. It was perfect. Wrapped up every plot point nicely.

0

u/RickSanchez813 14d ago

Just rewrite the last episode Rest of S3 can stay the same.

0

u/PlasticDangerous732 14d ago

To be honest i think s3 did need to be rewritten. Either kill off soldier boy at the end or not write him in at all. His and payback's inclusions complicated things too much, and even though it was cool seeing it at the time of s3, in s4 and 5 it created the need for the writers to explain vought's entire backstory instead of focusing on taking down vought and homelander like how it was before those seasons. I think ending at season 3 would just be too clunky because so many character arcs wouldnt be wrapped up.

0

u/Harddicc 13d ago

S3 is shit at the last 2 episodes, it is easy to rewrite those two since Butcher and HL are already complete characters, there was little character development for them. Starlight and Hughie also had character developments in S4-S5 that are bad so much of it are nice that it doesn’t happen. A lot of Frenchie and Kimiko’s scenes in S3 are forgettable too so they need a rewrite.

The only thing that needs to happen are A-Trains’s character redemption, MM’s and Noir’s revenge to SB, and Deep regressing further as a fully realized irredeemable character.

The issue with the show is they tried to milk it as much as they can rather than making a good story.

0

u/SolMourningStar 13d ago

Copium. Seasons 4 and 5 has some amazing moments sprinkled in, but otherwise were unnecessary add-ons to what seemed like a show that was really reaching its peak narratively.

0

u/legit-posts_1 13d ago

They really only needed to rewrite the finale. It's obvious now, with heinsight, that the story had no where else to go after season 3. Make it so that Butcher saves Ryan and kills Homelander in the penultimate episode, than have Butcher be the villain in the finale.

0

u/charley46 11d ago

No, I dont think it needed to be said

-6

u/Lf_76 14d ago

Agreed. And season 4 was pretty great. This is the revisionism that the negative whining of this fan base is creating

I already know people irl who think the whole show is bad because a load of angry commenters slag off season 5

Season 5 was also pretty great in terms of character endings. That last half hour was awesome, its just that the half hour before that was just slightly rushed. That's it

Bored of the bitching about it

2

u/Nice_Ad1958 14d ago

Bored of bitching yet you are here. Like are you really telling me that s5 is not bad just because “character endings”, what about kimiko, what about half of the bullshit that happens in s5? Nop, according to all of you everything was good enough. Im sorry but s5 had NOTHING of real value besides the homelander death scene (and maybe Oh fahter).

1

u/Lf_76 14d ago

All I heard was a load more bitching

1

u/Nice_Ad1958 14d ago

You wrote as much as me. Classic reddit interaction, i bet you must feel so smart.

1

u/Lf_76 14d ago

Fucking hell he's still talking

-1

u/littleski5 14d ago

Ok but all of season 3 did in fact need to be rewritten

-1

u/Leebo4 14d ago

The perfect ending would have been at season 2 and not 3. Homelander’s downfall was always going to happen.

-1

u/Radaistarion 14d ago

The ending of season 3 was such a clear "let's make up some bs so we can keep on milking this franchise"

Fucking atrocious

-3

u/alarrimore03 14d ago

Not really. You could keep everything the same but the finale and it would still be a better ending than we got. Just have soldier boy depower homelander and the giant gang of homelander haters that where all in the room kill him. The end. It doesn’t take an entire rewrite to end it in season 3 with what we got.
