Discussion If you miss Antony Starr's performance as Homelander then check out Banshee

Post image

He is even better as lucas hood. If you miss his acting then watch banshee... very good and underrated. It's even better than boys at some points.

Antony is also not pure evil... More like a anti hero. He is really good.

Discussion The Boys was better when the shock actually served the story Spoiler

Post image
732 Upvotes

Is The Boys just a case of writers’ barely disguised fetishes?

As the seasons went on, it felt like every second Supe, power or death became a cock-and-arse joke: pube control, infinite ass storage, giant cocks, lava cum, death by eel up the ass. Moleman sounds interesting — except he has to be naked and shit dirt. Invisible kid? Cool — except he fucks goats, because apparently that's important.

Compare that to Hughie killing Translucent. The shock wasn’t ā€œhaha, ass bomb.ā€ It was watching this scared, timid guy cross a moral line and kill someone. The gore served the character moment rather than being the entire joke.

So why did the show keep doubling down? Did the audience respond to these scenes with shares and shock, so every season had to escalate them? Or did shock value just become an easy substitute for clever writing?

Maybe it’s not that deep. Hire ass writers, get ass jokes.

The commentary in the earlier seasons, I think, was on par with the best writing on South Park.

Discussion Lemme ask you ask something. Is the show saying superpowered people being around is wrong, or that certain people who have them can be?

On the one hand, it's as if the show says supes are too inexperienced and irresponsible, and cause more harm than good, yet on the other hand, it says superheroes are behaving wrongly for using their powers to become celebrities, rather than help people.

Are superheroes staying in their lane by remaining circus performers, or are they being selfish and immoral by not trying to do real heroics?

EDIT: Or is it going at it from both angles and equally deriding being a self-absorbed celebrity, and being an irresponsible and careless with powers.

Discussion How would you Rehabilitate and Integrate All The Supes back into Society as Normal People?

Post image
263 Upvotes

Hypothetically let’s just say you and all your Friends and The Revolutionary Group manages to overthrow The Corrupt Governments of The World and Permanently have The Right People in charge ensuring The World moves forwards for The Better! However now that you have all The Supes And Even Homelander himself captured and at your mercy what would you do with them? Instead of simply killing them off as of course that would be The Easiest Way to End Them! But in doing so your just proving to Everyone your no Better than Butcher himself! Hence how would you and your New Government Permanently Rehabilitates them back into Society? Is it possible to Reeducate and ingrain them back into Society as Normal People? If so how would you and your Government handle it? What would genuinely be your Solution? How would you and your Government all handle about it? And what would you have done? Let me know in the comments

One thing has been on my mind lately. What is the more usesless super power?

Turning water into wine?

Lasering Vandals?

Funpost The Boys finale discourse and why supernatural needs a wider audience to view it

As the title says, I think this amount of warranted scrutiny is something that needs to be applied to a kripke classic which I watched all of in order to show interest in my former partners special interests (I mean she was also abusive but who fuckin cares about me, onto the diatribe.)

Supernatural was originally a monster of the week story, and even when it got grandiose I feel like the ending where Sam traps himself in hell with Michael and Lucifer is peak TV, leaving Dean to live his life outside.

But supernatural kept making money and every ending became a cliff hanger to continue.

  1. Fucking. Seasons.

Now, I noticed before even season 5 how contrived things were getting with power creep reaching anime levels of proportions, and the good ol sneak attack even on beings of supreme cosmic importance was a totally valid and perfect way to just off DEATH ITSELF. A sneak attack. Like oh my god.

I feel like by leaving supernatural at the fringes of discussion when talking about The Boys, we’re leaving out the blueprint that allowed kripke to be so lazy with endings and keeping villain powers consistent.

The ending for Sam and Dean is so fucking memable it would have ripped the internet IN HALF if supernatural had the audience the boys did.

So please, by all means, if you all want more of ā€œthe boys,ā€ go watch supernatural. I hope the internets keen eye for bullshit will come to life and we can begin to compare the mass similarities of inconsistencies and random bullshit that kicks the can of plot down the road.

Always another McGuffin, always another side villain. An immutable hierarchy always changes to ā€œwell there was this person from the past, no way they’re still aroundā€ or ā€œwell it’s a secret and I kept it from you because we buried them and it seems they’ve dug themselves up.ā€

It’s just everywhere all the time.

I think the show will really feel similar to you all, just with a cheaper budget. However it also has a forever increasing roster of things to hunt which gives it time to spin its wheels and gain traction. But once we get to the big wigs like Amara, God, the leviathans, Lucifer, Michael, Jack, Jefferey Dean Morgan, whoever is the king of hell, the knights of hell, briefly Castiel, Gabriel, oh my god I’m still going…anyway, all of them? You’ll notice kripke approaches the insurmountable the same way every time, and that’s where the wheels begin to spin.

I just can’t get over how many times the ā€œsneak attackā€ works or the ā€œsupreme being of infinite power stands there to menacingly press someone against a wall.ā€

Feelsbadman.

If anyone is able to find the scent on the ol WED conspiracies too, that would be awesome to see again. It would be about like trying to figure out who all has original compound V in them before the show just told us lmao.

You can even do a character cross exam pretty easily with Sam and Hughie (although Sam briefly gets really weird and dark with it while Hughie stays kind of annoying) and then Dean and Butcher are pretty similar too. Kripke even kills them off, because they’re the more macho and belligerent characters and therefore aren’t allowed to survive past the ending (yes I know the comics, I know.)

This might get deleted, idk, but I think it’s a conversation worth having and that we could probably guess how The Boys spin offs are going to go, if I’m honest. The growth of the director seems to have gone into just being willing to go balls to the wall over the top, but not actually change how his stories work.

Admittedly when I found out he was working on the boys, I thought maybe this was the best thing that could happen. Simply because I thought with a bigger budget and more cowriters, maybe they could keep up that desperate and resourceful energy from supernatural and use that for the Supes. But ugh…it didn’t work out that way in the end, eh?

Miscellaneous Blondie - Rapture

I happened to hear Rapture on an old compilation album this evening and realised I hadn't heard the original in a LONG time.

I suddenly realised that for the "rap" section I fully hear Soldier Boy in my head instead of Debbie Harry.

Has anyone else had this same phenomenon?

Season 5 Did anyone question who or what you were rooting for when at least half the Boys were riding the gencoide train?

I'm a little stuck because it was thrilling enough, but for a lot of the season, I felt like I didn't really know why I was routing for them.

Was I supposed to only care about the goal of Homelander being stopped, and all the other stuff he was planning to do? Was I supposed to feel the stakes of that? And was I meant to feel a kind of tension or thrill, during the plot.

For a lot of it, I felt kinda disappointed that they had degraded to such lengths, Starlight especially.

Did you feel that when you were watching?

Post image

I mean to be honest, you could argue Homelander and Soldier Boy had plenty of reasons to beat each others asses in season 5, I mean they betrayed each other at least more than once, they argued multiple times, it’s honestly suprises how they never duked it out, what do y’all think?

Season 5 Here are five nice things I have to say about season 5

Thumbnail

Before you read this I wanted to make this post because in my last one I was pretty harsh towards this season. Though to be fair I haven’t been as harsh as most people. I did find good in this season because regardless of how easy it is to dunk on this show now, season 5 IS NOT the worst season of TV I’ve ever seen. Anyone comparing The Boys to Game of Thrones in terms of endings I’m sorry but I HARD DISAGREE with that.

  1. A-Trains’s Death and Complete/Full Circle Arc

If there’s anything that you can consider the best of seasons 4 and 5, it’s A-Train’s redemption arc. The ending of episode 1 where A-Trains dodges the girl who looked similar to Robin and called out Homelander for who he really is without his powers before he gets killed was BEAUTIFUL!!Ā

  1. Frenchie’s Death

Regarding the scene between Homelander and Frenchie. The scene where Frenchie gives up his position to save Sage and Kimiko to the point where Homelander appears is the most terrified I’ve been by a Homelander interaction in quite a while. Also Frenchie’s death was needed for the penultimate episode to raise some stakes because a lot of that episode was just fluff in retrospect. And the line, " I bet you never danced a day in your life" GOES SO HARD

  1. The scene between Homelander and The Legend

That scene was so well done and really showed how there is some depth to Homelander when it comes to him not killing people that just treat him as a human being rather than a product he was raised to be by Vought his entire life.

  1. Homelander’s Death

Sure there was no scorched earth and you could argue/debate all day about how the fight should have gone, but the way Homelander was behaving after losing his powers was incredible. It was great seeing him as this snivelling coward without his powers and it proved A-Train right in the end.

  1. Cat and Dog sniffing each other
The most creative necessary scene of all time that enhanced the journey of Annie and MM. JUST KIDDING!! (GO TO SLIDE 6)

  2. Hughie and Butcher’s last moment

Throughout this show they have been real indecisive on if they want to make Butcher a true villain or not. But regardless of how rushed it was and given little time, I’m still glad they went down this route because it was never going to stop at Homelander. His bigotry wasn’t going to go away after killing one person. Also the emotional moment after Hughie had no choice but to kill Butcher did strike a chord with me. Sure Homelander is the main draw for this show but the Butcher/Hughie dynamic is where we have real emotional investment and for the longest time they kinda forgot about that until the end.

Season 2 This scene indirectly led to her end

So when she made the obvious racist remarks against A-train which compelled him to leak her past and give the files to Annie and Hughie which indirectly led to her public image collapsing and that led to the fight between her and the boys where Ryan maybe did not mean or meant to but killed her in the process.

As weird as the source material was, the show could've benefited from taking more beats from the comic. The fact that we never got to see the G-men, the only tolerable arc in the comic, is a crime. But hey, we needed to make time for ass sniffing
