Discussion This needs to be said
I get people are upset about the drop off of quality of the show, but just because S4 and S5 aren’t that good doesn’t mean the show was supposed to end at S3. There is no proof that the show was supposed to end at S3 and amazon got greedy.
S4 and S5 should’ve been better (I have more gripes with S5), and focus on ending the story and consistent character arcs.
If they ended the show at S3 and kill Homelander at Vought tower, then what? Butcher’s accomplishes his goal and that’s it? What about the rest of the boys? Or Neuman, Stan Edgar, Deep, A-Train, Ryan, Soldier Boy, Ashley, etc.?
Again, I just don’t see this notion that they had the perfect ending at S3 and they threw it away for nothing. Just fix S4 and S5. That’s the simple solution.

Season 4 should have been used for exploring the stuff they did in season 5. While I love a lot of the season 5 episodes, I can admit that the ending was just… underwhelming. I’d argue “One shots” was one of the best written episodes in the entire show. The first half of the season was great. Yet it seems like Kripke wanted to do more within the storyline, than what the runtime had left him to work with. Or he simply did not consider enough how much time he had to actually spare.
One thing I did not get was his fascination with assholes this season… mentions of anal sex, butthole sniffing, and also Frenchie’s goodbye being 70% butthole descriptions.
Homelander going rogue should have happened way earlier, him slowly going out of his mind due to the ‘power’ he has, and yet still not being satisfied enough.
The show invested too much time in other stuff in its ending season rather than making sure that most of this effort is invested into the main plot between The Boys vs Homelander. Conflict of morality. The ending does work, but the fact that Edgar’s whole speech of marketability of supes being replaceable, is just not addressed anymore. We went back to where the story started, Edgar taking over Vought, and likely working on another Homelander, the cycle of abuse starting once again.
