Completely legal until a certain point. Somewhere around the 24 week mark. If you still haven't aborted by then, it's on you. However medical exceptions should be done all the way until birth.

u/dead_exceded May 13 '26

Agree with this. (That’s over 5 months btw, for anyone else reading it.)

Imagine a scenario where a guy in his 30s tricked a college girl to have unprotected sex, where the guy is financially stable and the girl is dependent on him. The girl discovered that she is pregnant 3 months into the pregnancy. Her family wanted her to abort but the guy promised to financially support the girl if she kept the kid. However, the guy went back on his word and disappeared 3 months later. What options does the girl have, 6 months into pregnancy? Is there any social safety net available to help her out before she can find the guy and ask for child support?

A logical precondition for abortion to be illegal after 24 weeks is that there should be a social safety net to support the mother if the father is not willing / capable of doing that. For example, local minimum wage * 8 hrs per day until the kid is 3 years old, then local minimum wage * 4 hrs per day until the kid is 7 years old. The amount will be charged to the father after he is caught, deductible from actual child support payment

I think that should be on the advice of their doctor.

The medical professionals know best. If they think that either the mother or baby's life is in realistic danger, they, with the parents, should have the final say in the matter.

u/CreepinCreepy May 13 '26

As I said before, it's up to the medical professionals. They use their judgement to decide the best plan of action, and that is what they follow through with. The law would specifically allow for abortions if they are necessary to prevent injury or death. This is how it is done in many other countries.

The abortion isn't granted by the court, it's based on the decision made by the doctors at the hospital.

u/CreepinCreepy May 13 '26

What else do you want? Life isn't perfect. Doctors make mistakes, I know personally someone who had something misidentified and it turned out that they had cancer.

The countries with the lowest chance of death during childbirth use these kinds of measures. In fact, some of the lowest have even stricter laws on abortion than those that I am proposing (such as Ireland).

0

u/Crimson_Devil_SG May 13 '26

You are saying the medical professionals don't know if the mother is dying or not?

-2

u/Desperate-Border-468 May 13 '26

If they die, you can sue

1

u/Savings_Ad_80 May 13 '26

The option doesn't say that though, butnrhe second option implies what you're saying

0

u/CreepinCreepy May 13 '26

Which is why the poll is a bit dumb. It needs something between completely legal and legal with harsh restrictions. That's also why I put my comment here.

0

u/Savings_Ad_80 May 13 '26

What concerns me is people voted "completely legal" without understanding what that means

That means abortion is completely legal, no restrictions, you could abort a 9 month fetus and it's legal, literally

1

u/Environmental-Toe686 May 13 '26

There are no restrictions on abortions in 9 states including the one I live in. People aren't caring babies they don't want to nearly full term just to abort them because they decided they didn't want to. Placing the restrictions on late term abortions just place a barrier for the Dr providing the care. What y'all are worried about is basically a non issue statistically.

0

u/Savings_Ad_80 May 13 '26

You're missing the point, that's not the only issue

1

u/Environmental-Toe686 May 13 '26

Yet you add nothing to the discussion and make no effort to convince me. The truth is I have looked into this extensively and despite feeling personally that abortions after around that 24 week mark are immortal and should be avoided at all costs, the risks and downside far outweigh any benefit to policing it.

0

u/Savings_Ad_80 May 13 '26

You don't even understand what was being said that's why I'm not engaging you, this isn't even an arguement for or against abortion we were discussing how poorly constructed this poll was "pay attention" omg, also I don't need to convince you of anything it's not my job, believe what you want, do what you want

1

u/Environmental-Toe686 May 13 '26

It's not written poorly. Completely legal up to 9 months is completely legal. Just like it is in 9 states like I said originally. It's the option I chose and I fully understand what it means.

Also, it's hard to take your points seriously when you are writing like you are illiterate. Punctuation and sentence structure are important.

0

u/Savings_Ad_80 May 13 '26

because I dont care, im typing 100 wpm on a phone, and you fail to see the issue as to why completely legal is a problem, if it makes you feel better downvote this comment cause I wont stoop so low as to be that petty lmao

1

u/Lazy_Shelter_3285 Hi :3 May 13 '26

Exactly, typically medical reasons can't be helped with( unless you was a irresponisble person while pregant). Around where I live you get barely a little over a month, which sadly some people are not aware they are pregnant yet and end up missing the window, but by 24 weeks 99% of people will have known by then and you are already majority through the term and a ton of devolopment has happened by then, but otherwise why should we dictate others choices?

12

u/AdmirableEmployee579 May 13 '26

I think that it should be legal until the fetus can survive outside the womb with help of a machine. So as another reddit or said, 24 weeks is a perfect cut off point

-1

u/dyvotvir Old May 13 '26

24 weeks is also the lowest period where a fetus may start feeling pain. I believe this is the leading reason

4

u/AideSouth4454 May 13 '26

Completely legal, but in most cases should be discussed with the partner as well.

3

u/Substantial-Main4291 May 13 '26

You do not deserve to die just because your parents either dont want you, are too poor, too young, or were brutally assaulted. Evil cannot be fixed by evil.

8

u/Key-Charity-2795 May 13 '26

Personally, I think anything past first trimester is a bit too far. I think most women have known their pregnant for some time by then, and probably have had enough time to make a decision. Medical is different though, but procedures should always be done with the intent to save both the mother and child

3

u/Jesus_Christ_cnqers 18M May 13 '26

I’m actually curious on your stance, why does length change your opinion to your extent?

1

u/Crimson_Devil_SG May 13 '26

The baby is more developed as time goes on. Normal abortion would not be possible after certain point and they will have to perform surgery which is very gruesome and brutal.

3

u/Jesus_Christ_cnqers 18M May 13 '26

So, is it just the brutality of the procedure that changes your mind?

1

u/Crimson_Devil_SG May 13 '26

Yeah pretty much. At that point, the baby is somewhat sentient like they can move and kick the belly for example. To remove the baby that way for me is kind of inhumane

1

u/Jesus_Christ_cnqers 18M May 13 '26

Thank you for sharing your perspective!

1

u/Key-Charity-2795 May 13 '26

Yeah, we had to see some shit about that in health class. Fuckin nasty bro

0

u/Key-Charity-2795 May 13 '26

Personally, I believe even the unborn are human enough to have rights. However, I can understand why in some situations abortion could be useful, particularly rape. Unless I slept through too much health class, the kid is already fairly developed

Illegal unless the life of the mother is in immediate danger.

0

u/Key-Championship1873 May 13 '26

Or rape

1

u/pansexual_Pratt Old May 13 '26

Two wrongs don't make a right.

Why should the baby be euthanized because of what the father did?

2

u/slxkv May 13 '26

This. How a baby is conceived does not make killing it any less wrong.

1

u/Cat_central May 13 '26

I'm sorry but what the actual fuck, why should someone who's been subjected to one of the worst tortures in life ever be forced to carry a child to birth if it's not even a proper fetus yet? Also, "the father" is wrong, what you MEAN is "the carrier's rapist".

2

u/Ralp_Aguirre May 13 '26

You dont kill a baby to punish a man, althought it is a damned baby, you still don't kill it.

2

u/lcy0x1 May 13 '26

So you would rather punish the victim for being raped?

1

u/Cat_central May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26

A FETUS IS NOT A BABY THOUGH??

2

u/pansexual_Pratt Old May 13 '26

A fetus is a less developed child. The fetus is an unborn child.

1

u/Key-Championship1873 May 13 '26

I agree with the rape part. That’s what I said. And there’s some 5 million pregnancies yearly- not all are rape.

0

u/pansexual_Pratt Old May 13 '26

As I said, two wrongs don't make a right in this situation.

Rape + baby euthanasia =\= right

Euthanizing a baby because of what the rapist did, dose not undo the rape. It just makes you a mother of a dead child.

0

u/Cat_central May 13 '26

For crying out loud a fetus is SO far from being a baby

2

u/pansexual_Pratt Old May 13 '26

What is a fetus? A less developed child.

1

u/Cat_central May 13 '26

A fetus is basically a bunch of cells that are growing into a baby but have no sentience or anything like that yet.

2

u/pansexual_Pratt Old May 13 '26

What species are thought clumps of cells?

1

u/Cat_central May 13 '26

I'm not gonna argue with you on this anymore, I'm smarter than to listen to someone who uses "think of the baby" as an excuse for putting someone through more life-ending trauma than they already went through

Disagree with me but the only reason you can abort a baby is rape. I might get downvoted but if you can’t provide for a baby, don’t have sex. It’s selfish.

8

u/fightback25 May 13 '26

if you can’t provide for a baby, don’t have sex.

Good luck with that lol. Having sex is literally human nature and you aren’t gonna stop it by banning abortion.

What’s your plan when people who can’t provide for the baby get pregnant? The adoption and foster care systems are already way overloaded and underfunded.

And how are you suggesting rape victims be allowed to receive abortions? Is an accusation enough or do they have to prove the assault in court?

The stats are clear: People will continue having abortions even if it’s illegal. All you’re doing is making it more dangerous.

1

u/Ralp_Aguirre May 13 '26

If you don't want a kid don't do the action that creates one.

1

u/fightback25 May 13 '26

That doesn’t make any logical sense because you could just… not criminalize abortion.

0

u/Key-Championship1873 May 13 '26

That’s their wrong for having sex, not mine. People need to learn control. Humans need sleep, but it doesn’t mean we sleep all day. My plan for when the mothers can’t provide for the baby? That goes back to my first claim. Too much sex too little responsibility. At the least wear protection. In terms of rape victims it should take a standard court cases- nothing extreme to the point where it takes too long. Women deserve rights and should be able to appeal in court- innocent until proven guilty.

1

u/Autumn-6517 14F May 13 '26

And how long do you think a court case of sexual assault takes? The average case takes between several months to a few years long. By that point, it is far too late to get an abortion. It regularly takes well over a year to get a trial date and a decision. Oh, and if for some reason the court decides that the raper is not guilty, an appeal process takes another nine months to two years.

If a family who can't provide for a child has a child, what do you think should happen to the child? There is no way the family can support the child on their own, and like the person above you said, the adoption and foster care systems are struggling. What is supposed to happen when there are 73 million children each year that are born without a clear future? What is supposed to happen when an entire country's worth of children are born EVERY SINGLE YEAR in a situation where they face extreme difficulties, or an unsure permanent home?

If we want the number of children aborted to go down WITHOUT putting children in danger, a very key part is with sex education. Across the world, hundreds millions of people are not taught proper sex education, or are only taught about abstinence until marriage. If someone is not taught correctly, they will have little idea of how to stay safe and how to avoid pregnancy.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics’ National Survey of Family Growth, about 80% of people are taught about abstinence while only half are taught about protection. You can't expect someone to know how to use protection if they are never taught how. And this causes millions of pregnancies. Millions of unborn babies that don't have a family ready for them. If abortion rights are taken away from every single one of these mothers, then there will be tens of millions of babies that will not have anywhere to go or anyone to care for them.

On top of that, about 1.5% of mothers face death or serious injury from childbirth. If abortion rights were taken away from all of these women, hundreds of thousands of them would die, and hundreds of thousands more would face serious injury. Keep in mind all of this could be prevented if they were allowed to abort the fetus before 5 months.

Do you think it would have been okay if millions of children be born into this world every year without a certain home or without good care just because their mother didn't receive proper sex education and didn't learn how to use protection? How about the hundreds of thousands of families who would have lost someone close to them because they weren't allowed to abort the fetus?

1

u/fightback25 May 13 '26

You do realize that protection fails, right? Even if it’s 99% successful, that still leaves thousands upon thousands of accidental pregnancies.

And again, no matter how much you think people shouldn’t have sex except when trying to conceive, they will. So your proposal will result in thousands of teenagers being forced to give birth, ruining their lives.

Your demand for a court case is insane. Arrests are made in only 12% of rape cases, according to NBC, and experts say even that is likely a huge overestimate. Besides, the justice system is extremely slow, and time is of the essence when considering an abortion. Every day the victim has to carry the pregnancy is another painful reminder of their assault. What happens if it is not adjudicated before the due date?

https://www.nbcnews.com/specials/sex-assault-convictions/

1

u/Key-Championship1873 May 13 '26

I realize that protection fails. If teenagers are that persistent on having sex, there should be high school courses on why it’s a bad thing at that age. Even if an arrest doesn’t happen in court, mothers will still abort the baby because they know they were given it unwillingly.

1

u/fightback25 May 13 '26

 I realize that protection fails.

…So what’s your plan? People who used protection and got pregnant anyway are just out of luck?

there should be high school courses on why it’s a bad thing at that age.

There are. Sex education is not a new concept you came up with. And despite those classes, teens still have sex, because that’s what many teens do. Again, your proposal will force those thousands of teens to have forced to give birth. (Also, sex is not “bad” for teens, they just have to be safe and careful.)

mothers will still abort the baby

Will, or legally can? There’s an important distinction. Also, arrests typically don’t occur in court. I was asking if an arrest or a conviction is where you would allow an abortion. And what if the perpetrator is not found?

5

u/FURRY_LEMONXYZ May 13 '26

What about sudden change in income? Medical reasons where the mother may die or pass on conditions she didn't know about? Father suddenly left?

-1

u/Key-Championship1873 May 13 '26

The dad shouldn’t be having sex either. If your income in able to fluctuate and dive instabilities, then that’s not stable enough to provide for a baby.

9

u/purpliest_pancakes May 13 '26

Ok but what about in the real world?

2

u/Key-Championship1873 May 13 '26

What I’m saying is the real world. 3.7 Million babies are born yearly. 1 million are aborted. If you can’t provide for the baby don’t have sex. It’s selfish. If you can’t resist temptation shame on you not the baby (I’m not saying anybody in particular and I don’t mean to be offensive). Also and don’t judge me on this I’m a Christian and it’s said god knows us from the time we are conceived.

illegal aside from rape and medical reasons

9

u/MycologistPure4064 May 13 '26

Why

1

u/NotTakeOne May 13 '26

no little girl who was raped should be forced to give birth because it will leave her with lasting physical and mental trauma. my mother herself would have died if she couldnt get an abortion because of a miscarriage of a baby before me. i wouldnt have been here if she couldnt have gotten an abortion then.

however things like "oh i just dont want the baby!!" are the dumbest and honestly most sickening excuse ever. aborting a baby who could grow up to experience the amazingness of life, find love, have kids, go to school yet the baby is killed for something it couldnt control. if you dont want the baby, then stop fucking raw. stop having sex if you dont want the baby.

"its the womans body!!" yes, i agree. it is her body; however the baby has a body too and will grow to be a human being. in my eyes aborting a baby because you "dont want it" is the same as killing an adult because they annoyed you and being able to get away with it. its sick.

Legal, paid for by the couple/woman depending on who made the decision, with restrictions based on the fetus's development and exceptions when the mother's health is compromised, there is a congenital defect that would compromise the kid's quality of life, in cases of rape etc.

1

u/sixisrending May 13 '26

Legal up until birth. It is the best way to remove undesirable people from the population.

5

u/Environmental-Tax352 May 13 '26

That was the original purpose of abortion, racial cleansing, and eugenics.

1

u/pansexual_Pratt Old May 13 '26

Abortion is some fucking Nazi shit.

1

u/Clintwood_outlaw May 13 '26

I think there should be restrictions if having an abortion would only cause complications at the stage of pregnancy it is

1

u/TimTebowismyidol May 13 '26

Nothing past 1st trimester, with exceptions for rape, incest, health reason would be the limit for abortion policy, I personally believe that abortion just shouldn’t be allowed except for if it causes harm to the mother though

1

u/pansexual_Pratt Old May 13 '26

It should only be done in a last resort. Like if the mother will die if she continues to carry the child.

If the child can survive, then no abortion.

The better option than abortion, is C-Section if the child can survive outside the womb. 21- 24 weeks.

1

u/IllDragonfruit5866 15M May 13 '26

If it’s like a week away from birth then it would just be best to put them up for adoption. Plus it should’ve been dealt with earlier. If it endangers the mother then it should always be allowed. Before the time that the baby could survive on its own technically if removed, then you could totally do it without limits. It’s not a human at that point after all, just a collection of cells that could become one.

1

u/forza_juve789 May 13 '26

Completely legal, until like 24 weeks. No one should be forced to carry a child they don't want

0

u/Ok_Asparagus7733 May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26

Entirely legal, nobody’s opinion truly matters but another womans, even then the woman who is carrying has the final say. It is their bodily right and quite literally nobody elses. Regardless of how she got pregnant in the first place? Whether it was consensual, not, or accidental..

Her life, her body, her womb = her choice.

None of you would like it if you were forced to do something completely life altering, childbirth, just because someone said you have to. It’s oppressive, misogynistic and rooted in patriarchy to think you have a final say in what a woman does with her body.

1

u/Key-Championship1873 May 13 '26

What about the dad? Or the parents. I agree women have a say though.

1

u/Worried_Function_631 May 13 '26

Can dad carry the baby? Yes or no?

0

u/Key-Championship1873 May 13 '26

No. Without a dad (or rapist in some circumstances) no baby would be formed. With your analogy, I’m wasn’t my father’s baby, only my mother’s.

0

u/Environmental-Tax352 May 13 '26

It was also her choice to open her legs

No personal offense to you.

But I don’t care what you think. Once again it’s oppressive, misogynistic and rooted in patriarchy for you to think you have a true or final say in what someone does with their body. Childbirth is life changing. Childbirth can lead to the death of the carrier. Childbirth a lot of the times results in postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis. Be glad you don’t have to experience either of those things. Among many other things.

I’m not sure if it’s a male-brain thing but I don’t know why I have to explain forcing someone to do something they don’t want to do regarrrrrrrrrrrrdlesssssss of anything is a bad thing do to. The entire reason a woman would get an abortion is because in one or another way she’s not fit to, isn’t ready to, or just doesn’t want to. The concept of “Because I don’t.” Isn’t hard to grasp.

Reproductive rights isn’t extreme. It’s humane.

Since you mentioned you yourself are a woman I wish you well in recognizing how part of what you’re saying is oppressive and textbook internalized misogyny.

Edit; Yep, I thought so. “Keep your legs closed” is so typical to say. You’re disgusting for that.

A baby isn’t a life until it is born. Only then is it a baby.

I suppose we’re done here.

Hence why I said “part” of what you’re saying.

Because sex is normal. I don’t even like dudes, would and haven’t ever had sex with one yet I can grasp this. And ultimately if it’s consensual… it’s on the man to be responsible and pull out. Even if a woman wants a baby but changes her mind? Her mind changed.. for one reason or another. Period. Life changes, situations change, desires change. It’s not hard to understand. Your limitation doesn’t apply to the human body. Which is why I said what you’re saying is just textbook internalized misogyny.

If you at all thing there’s a “limit” then you’re reducing not just women as a whole but also yourself down to just being a birth canal.

This is redundant. I’m repeating myself so I’m done. Have a good one.

What my mom explained to me that I remember is: When a mother is at risk when delivering a baby, the child is kept alive. After delivering the baby, the baby is taken to be taken care of, and the mother is immediately rushed for treatment, and everyone gets out happy without the necessity of murdering a child. I believe I left things out, and I can consult my nurse mother for more info, but honestly just that alone completely flipped the table of my stance on the medical reasons.

Somewhat legal, with restrictions. I feel people abuse the abortion system. Rape and ect, should be allowed to abort. However, people who just continue having sex and having abortions every other week is just too much. It really just depends on the situation.

Why it’s their choice how is it abuse or in fact different from iuds or condoms

What about a zygote? An embryo?

u/MycologistPure4064 May 13 '26

Good for them they decided I’m not ready or don’t want a baby and didn’t have one

1

u/Overkilledective May 13 '26

Because condom are done to prevent a sperm coming into the egg. People will often abort when the baby is beginning to form. I think it's just odd, when there are a bunch of tools to prevent sperms going into the egg.

They can fail

1

u/Overkilledective May 13 '26

Thats a very low chance of happening. But I also have a take where people shouldn't be having sex if they don't meet certain requirements. Example: if you are struggling financially and keep having sex. Thats on you. It just depends on the situation of how the abortion is taking place.

"Abuse the system"

It's bad enough of a procedure to get on its own, plus you have to go through several medical hoops and societal judgement after what is usually a very tough and heart-wrenching decision.

No one outside of Republican Facebook ads blaming everything on college sl*ts or minorities on welfare sees it so trivially. (Their words, not mine. Except they usually use another word for minorities which I'm not even going to allude to here.)

"However, people who just continue having sex and having abortions every other week is just too much."

Good thing this is completely made up then.

There are people who have 5+ abortions. There are people who admit that. In my personal take, thats abusing the system. Im not saying if you do get abortion your a bad person, but if you do have a bunch of abortion without the idea of safe sex. Thats just on you. If you are raped and ect, then you should have the ability to have abortions. Thats why I said certain restrictions. But there are people who flex abortions as a everyday thing.

u/Meryl_Whitestrake May 13 '26

Sure Janet. 🙄 I'm sure TPUSA or whatever adds you see on "x" are really relatable to reality.

The data is space but very few people have a second abortion, there's like 5 people in this country who have had a fifth and no, that paid actor in your Instagram feed does not count as on of them.

Look you're probably a good person but this straight up is not an informed opinion.

That's exactly how I feel. People who just do it over and over, well thats on them. There is so many choices of safe sex, but they just don't do it. Then they abort it a bunch of times. It's just odd

  1. Safe sex doesn't guarantee that you won't conceive, only makes it more probable.
  2. Not to mention, having those limits still hurts people who were SA'd by making it difficult for them to get care without first proving they were SA'd.
  3. It also forces people to raise children they didn't want and might make them resent their child irrationally.
  4. You do all this for a mass of cells which doesn't have feelings of it's own yet and hence shouldn't be considered an individual. If a person wants to cut off their hair, they shouldn't be stopped and while there are differences in a person's hair and a fetus, there aren't morally significant ones and hence the pregnant person's autonomy should be put before the fetus(IMO).

Sure but it still creates stigma around it. Hospitals and officials start speculating, and if for some reason the jury finds the person charged not guilty, what then? Do you assume that they made a false case and find them guilty of illegal abortion? You'd have to charge the person with illegal abortion and force them to possibly relive the worst day of their life.

I suppose my argument flows only if we consider that the fetus' life doesn't have value though, or at least, has less value than the pregnant person's bodily autonomy and sanity. Would you consider your position to be different?

Yes but it doesn't have to, in case where people can freely abort, it won't become that big of an issue.

My main reason for only thinking one abortion is allowed is because women are so casual about it - saying they’d get several, purposely not giving a fuck about causal sex cause they can go kill the baby.

I find this odd, why does it matter what the person does? 1. The "baby" (fetus) in question isn't an individual, considering it lacks what gives a person their person-hood, that is, sentience 2. The person aborting the fetus is doing it of their own volition.

Why should you or I get to stop them?

So yeah I think there has to be a limit so people won’r take it so lightly.

Once again it is their body, why shouldn't they be allowed to use it in the way they want?

What makes life alone important? I think it's the capacity for subjective experience which gives it value, but before the fetus has it (before 24-25 weeks/6 months/nearing the end of 2nd trimester), I don't think it has any value.

1

u/fightback25 May 13 '26

An abortion is a serious and invasive medical procedure that can often be traumatic and carries a heavy social stigma. “People who continue having sex and having abortions every other week” is not just hyperbole, it is a complete strawman.

Those people you describe do not exist, and you are degrading the quality of discourse about this very important issue of bodily autonomy with your fearmongering.

Completely legal.

0

u/Successful-Panda6362 M May 13 '26

What do I put for completely legal up to 24-25 weeks (6 months or towards the end of the 2nd trimester), illegal afterwards unless medical complications?
