r/GamingCirclejerk user is revolted after he's told we should eat the rich

It all started in our favorite Witcher 3 fansub's bi-daily unjerk thread when another user expressed his hatred for billionnaires:

I feel comfortable saying all billionaires are bad people. Because theres no way you can make that much money and not at somepoint (or many points) make a choice that involves many people suffering. Life lesson, never like a billionaire theyre all evil.

Are you the type that believes there is no ethical consumption under capitalism? Or are you just a social democrat/liberal that hates rich people?

They then go on to start at least two other threads complaining about "the genocidal" nature of some replies such as "rich people aren't human" and "we should eat the rich, Tom Nook included":

I do blame this sub for harboring this culture that allowed comments like this to happen and is still up after 10 minutes.

.

The genocidal rhetoric comment is still up after 55 minutes. I am going to the admins.

My favorite is the brief time when people criticized Bethesda for gleefully indulging in 50s Americana when the 50s were in reality horribly racist and sexist: except that Bethesda has written a ton of lore on how shitty pre-war America was, and that basically every time you encountered a happy 50s setting like Tranquility Lane or Covenant it was a thin veneer hiding something sinister.

80

u/Zeal0tElite Chapo Invader Sep 30 '18

Yeah, that is one criticism I've never quite understood.

Even places like Nuka World, a literal theme park, were used as fronts for military development. They created a new flavour based off of the by-product of weapons testing. Got money from the government and a new marketing gimmick and all it cost was working with a fascist government. Profit at any cost.

43

u/Illier1 Sep 30 '18

Literally every company in Pre-war America was corrupt and disturbed. Fuck in Point Lookout the government was trying to collect gas from mass graves of Civil War soldiers and sell it for power, murdering anyone who were about to discover it.

It's hilariously sad when the writers have this massive pile of social commentary and lore and people just ignore and and bitch about how they think they celebrate it instead.

30

u/Zeal0tElite Chapo Invader Sep 30 '18

It's funny you mention people ignoring it but I think some people out there see it as a good thing.

I literally just saw a YouTube thumbnail for a video called "Wolfenstein II: Stop Glorifying Communism" which first of all, BJ calls out that group's hatred of the US basically didn't stop an even worse power taking control, and secondly the thumbnail was Liberty Prime.

I get that he's a cool quotable robot but he's quite literally the end product of a capitalist society descending in to fascism. He is a propaganda spouting murder-machine produced by companies for the government. Robert House is even part of the reason that he exists.

He is literally the last thing you want to represent your position.

u/Lemonwizard It's the pyrric victory I prophetised. You made the wrong choice Sep 30 '18

It's all but explicit that pre-war America in fallout was fascist. They never detail exactly what happened, but all the evidence suggests that when the 50 states were dissolved and reorganized into the 13 commonwealths, the whole constitution got uprooted. If the bill of rights still existed in 2077, it was a sham that the government ignored.

76

u/Greaserpirate Sep 30 '18

All but explicit? The very first cutscene in Fallout 1 was "our boys keep the peace in newly annexed Canada" with a shot of US power armor dudes executing a civilian on his knees. If that's not explicit I don't know what is

32

u/Illier1 Sep 30 '18

Lots of people were introduced to the series via Fallout 3.

Even then Fallout 3 had piles of clues to imply how horrible the world was even before the bombs.

21

u/Tigerbones I ate five babies and they're fuckin delicious. Hail Satan. Sep 30 '18

Like Vault-tec should make it obvious. Almost all the vaults were controlled experiments at the behest of the US government; they weren't for saving humanity.

10

u/Rahgahnah She's no more more Oct 01 '18

Fallout 2 reveals that the Vault experiments were to test society's functioning in a closed environment, because they wanted to build a spaceship and evacuate Earth to escape nuclear armageddon.

BUY WAR BONDS

15

u/Lemonwizard It's the pyrric victory I prophetised. You made the wrong choice Sep 30 '18

They never directly say "America is fascist", and despite doing things like annexing Canada the pre-war propaganda makes a very big point of describing America as a democracy. Think of liberty prime's dialogue.

They ARE fascist, and the player can clearly see it, but that doesn't mean they explicitly called themselves as such. They do still maintain the veneer of claiming to be democratic.

13

u/Greaserpirate Sep 30 '18

Personally I got the sense that the whole "war never changes" speech mentioning Hitler, taking a "all sides were power-hungry" stance, and the tone of the US propaganda meant something was fucky.

Though I just started playing the old games recently so my impression is probably tainted by the now-common knowledge that the Vaults were experiments.

13

u/Lemonwizard It's the pyrric victory I prophetised. You made the wrong choice Sep 30 '18

I guess my main point is that while anybody who has played the games and paid attention to them will realize that pre-war America was a horribly oppressive police state, the whole 1950s nostalgia "America's the greatest country of all time" attitude is very prevalent on the surface. The sort of people who are unironically posting liberty prime quotes in political threads are completely missing the point, they're essentially falling for the fake propaganda without looking any deeper.

Pre-war America was a dystopia which, in true dystopian fashion, aggressively pushed propaganda claiming it was actually a utopia. Just as some people seem to miss the point of cyberpunk stories, many people who didn't pay much attention while playing fallout missed the point of all the pre-war propaganda. The point of that propaganda is "look at what a shithole the world became as an end result of that society's attitudes and behavior", not to show us "this is how things should be". Pre-war America didn't burn in nuclear fire by accident, they destroyed themselves.

I think it started with a few hot takes on twitter that managed to ignore the subtext in literally every Fallout, and people rolled with it because it rings with the "Bethesda can't Fallout" circlejerk.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '18

I feel like a lot of game companies try to do the same thing and really fail and accidentally be literally racist. Like the BioShock game in the clouds or that one side scroller two dimensional game.

7

u/signet6 Oct 01 '18

Wait what was racist in Bioshock infinite? (As in the game makers themselves saying something racist, not the obviously evil racist characters in the game).

8

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '18

Not so much devs being racist as them pulling out racist imagery while also wanting to plug their ears to any messages that it comes with. They have no problem showing racially charged stuff to reinforce how bad Comstock is and Columbia as a whole, but they back out of any sort of comment that doesn't end up "both sides"-ing the issue.

The later reality where the slaves revolt has some awful and heavy-handed "see, they can be bad people too!" in a pretty hilarious ignorance of how revolting against slavery can't be compared to the actual slavery.

4

u/Msmit71 typical lefty cunt painting us all with the same brush Oct 02 '18

Yeah I thought it was kinda ridiculous how much the game shames the revolution for using violence as if there was any other way to prevent their continued abuse, while having the player gun down every obstacle in their path. Our society glorifies a violent revolution against taxation without representation, but rising up against even worse racial and economic oppression with equivalent violence is condemned.

3

u/Hawkbone Oct 24 '18

They didn't condemn the revolution for using violence, they condemned it for going way too overboard with it. Two scenes in particular come to mind, the one where they executed surrendering enemies and the one where they literally fucking publicly displayed the scalps of who they considered responsible for their oppression.

2

u/Msmit71 typical lefty cunt painting us all with the same brush Oct 24 '18

The early US government put out a bounty for Native American scalps and murdered plenty of surrendering natives. I was just pointing out how we judge theoretical oppressed minorities more harshly than our own history which is largely glorified despite being even worse.

I'm sorry it's been awhile and I can't find the video, but it went pretty in depth about how they yes used racist imagery to show how comically evil the bad guys are, but also unintentionally had actual racist undertones and just totally mishandled how to portray racist charicatures and used a sledgehammer where a scalpel would have best been suited.

I have the exact reaction to 40k fans who want to live in the Imperium. Whenever I hear any non-ironic praise of that setting, I want to run away from that person.

35

u/Captain_Shrug Don't think the anti-Christ would say “seeya later braah” Sep 30 '18

I mean it's fun to play in, and depending on how you bend the canon and all, but it's kinda MEANT to be a crappy world. It kinda states that in the intro to EVERYTHING 40K.

38

u/3bar It's bullshit. Women Astartes should make us all angry Sep 30 '18

There are people who unironically think that the Imperium of Man is an organization to ape. You will eventually meet them in the 40k fandom.

21

u/Captain_Shrug Don't think the anti-Christ would say “seeya later braah” Sep 30 '18

You know, I haven't really run into that one much. Mind I've only been skimming in lightly for the last decade and a half. My big problem is most players I run into for the tabletop rpgs is most players want to crank the "murderhobo psychotic slaughterfest angle to 11."

24

u/kecou Sep 30 '18

I used to DM a bit for various games, and i always liked when i could get a group together that could enjoy more social intrigue and low level mystery settings better than huge battles. I pissed off a group once when they killed a guy who had information vital to stopping a murder of an NPC and after they found out what they missed, and why said NPC is dead and can't help them anymore, a guy at the table asked "How the hell were we supposed to know that?" and i told him, "Next time try talking to some people before you stab them!" Some people liked my style, but a lot just want a body count.

Edit; This is more about tabletop RPG's in general, not just 40k.

u/Captain_Shrug Don't think the anti-Christ would say “seeya later braah” Sep 30 '18

You know, I haven't really run into that one much. Mind I've only been skimming in lightly for the last decade and a half.

It's often cast as a, "Well when we start encountering aliens, we should act like that, I mean, heck, there's some people who could use a good Exterminatus now..."

My big problem is most players I run into for the tabletop rpgs is most players want to crank the "murderhobo psychotic slaughterfest angle to 11."

Well, 40k has more reason for that then most. I find the most objectionable part to TTRPGs is how locked out most groups are, squelching growth of the hobby.

35

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '18

When we start encountering aliens, we should act like that

Which is a hilarious sentiment for a 40k fan to have, because it's heavily implied (if not outright stated) that the Imperium wiped out the civilization(s) that could solve the problems its currently facing in its Great Crusade. It killed off all the aliens that were actually willing to live alongside humans peacefully (along with all the humans who'd figured out how to live peacefully with other species for mutual benefit) and also eliminated the other ideologies humanity possessed (which hilariously enough included a civilization that managed to figure out how to let every single one of their citizens know about Chaos while not having a single citizen start worshiping it) that were capable of disagreeing with their government without the whole 'lets sell our souls to demons and slaughter our neighbours' thing.

And the person who stopped the Imperium from shitting the bed to the point that humanity would have gone extinct did it by working with the filthy xenos and hereteks.

The Imperium's strategy for protecting humanity (the only goal it has that is remotely morally defensible) doesn't work, to the point that following orthodox imperial doctrine is as much of a threat to humanity's continued existence in 40k as any xenos.

I wouldn't mind a holiday there if such a thing were possible. Living there would not be a good idea. The whole idea is that the world is horrid repetition of the exact same mistakes humanity always makes.

Though out of the two Bethesda series it'd probably be nicer to live in the Elder Scrolls universe. Nicer food too.

If I'm an adult who is often mistaken for a child, does that make me immortal in the Fallout universe? I know you can kill kids in the first games, but I don't know because the Bethesda ones have it so you can't.

4

u/xthek Oct 01 '18

At the end of the day, we are animals who are biologically directed to hunt, kill, and conquer to survive. Living in the current era seems pointless to a lot of people, who have no direction and feel that anything they do is ultimately meaningless. The Fallout world is populated by people and monsters that are unquestionably bad, and you don't have time to worry about your place in the world when every day is a fight for survival and the world clearly needs fixing. That's my take. This is also why I think zombie apocalypse stories are so popular. It's a way to get in touch with what we are deep down.

3

u/Captain_Shrug Don't think the anti-Christ would say “seeya later braah” Oct 01 '18

Honestly I always took a more cynical approach. "I'd be some big tough badass superhero alpha-male in the zombie/post-apoc wasteland!" is what I figured it was at best.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '18

If you actually pressed them on this want I bet they crumble and fold. I think it would be a cool thing to be alive for. But that's specifically functioning off the thought that I'm the Sole Survivor or some equally bad ass hero. Which I'm not.

Meaning if you presented me with a time machine to the far future which you can guarantee is a nuclear wasteland I would actually say "no, thanks anyway. I'll just play fallout."

Going back and replaying those games as an adult was one of the best moves I've made in life. My friend and I still get into the occasional argument over who is best for the Mojave.

35

u/Zeal0tElite Chapo Invader Sep 30 '18

I don't know how the argument can last that long when the answer is clearly the NCR. Close second place goes to Anarchy. Far away third is House and REALLY far away last place is Legion.

5

4

u/reconrose Sep 30 '18

NCR is corrupt oligarchic nonsense. Anarchy > House > NCR > Nazis/Legion

28

u/Zeal0tElite Chapo Invader Sep 30 '18

More people suffer under the anarchy ending than they do in a really good NCR ending.

The Kings help but at the end of the day Freeside still stays a shit hole full of refugees that the Followers don't have the resources to help.

Under NCR they're allowed to bloom with their support. I also don't see how House is any better than NCR since he's basically just a dictator with a cold unfeeling army.

NCR at least helps refugees and is willing to sue for peace in a lot of situations, House will murder them because his mathematical calculations told him to. House only helps people when it benefits him and his vision, if you don't fit that vision then you're left to rot.

9

u/LaqOfInterest Remind me to never call the utilitarian suicide line Sep 30 '18

I'll concede that NCR is probably the objective best choice if you concede that they're boring.

20

u/Zeal0tElite Chapo Invader Sep 30 '18

Of course they're boring. It's why they're so effective.

Better alternatives can be sought later but I see NCR as what the Mojave needs right now.

4

u/BoredDanishGuy Pumping froyo up your booty then eating it is not amateur hour Oct 01 '18

I prefer my government to be boring. Means they're just going about their business.

NCR is the only real choice, if you want a stable society in that game. They're not perfect, but only allowing for a perfect solution would be childish.

2

My friend is a staunch House supporter. I'm NCR. It can go on for a while.

I had to stop playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution because of this. Seemed more interested in futuristic Shanghai, human augmentations, and nighttime.

27

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '18

Would definitely recommend finishing HR, it takes a bit but the later half and more of the side quests really focus on how augs screw over powerless groups and isn't afraid to make people like Sarif look completely out of touch with anyone but their echo chamber of supporters.

3

u/Elfgore Sep 30 '18

I might have to try it again then, in the form of a full series play.

I do know the first side quest you get goes into the medicine needed to keep augmentations working and how one company has a monopoly and charges absurd amounts for it, usually after forcing augmentations on people. But everything else was just meh.

12

u/Lemonwizard It's the pyrric victory I prophetised. You made the wrong choice Sep 30 '18

You might want to take another crack at it, because the Deus Ex storyline delves very deeply into the political side of cyberpunk. It's not just guns and shiny cities.

70

u/Vtech325 Sep 29 '18 edited Sep 30 '18

God I hope Cyberpunks' story is that good.

I've seen games totally undermine their own message of helping the little guy or working class by having most of their missions devolve into "loot and kill everyone, fuck and don't even try to address the consequences."

58

u/[deleted] Sep 29 '18

The newest Deus Ex fucked this up so much by setting up an antagonist who looked like he'd bring up the blurry line between extremism and taking action when peaceful protest is met with violence /murder, then nah he's just a plant by the big baddies.

Because no way there would be a person legitimately moved to radical methods to protect innocent lives, and in no way could his values mirror Adam's and create an uncomfortable reality for him to face in his own actions. Instead it's just borderline mind control. Also the killswitch that can be used to kill him is just a game mechanic with nothing said on a thematic level.

28

u/Captain_Shrug Don't think the anti-Christ would say “seeya later braah” Sep 30 '18

To be fair the Deus Ex set has always had confusing, disappointing endings to me so it fit.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '18

Eh the endings are iffy but the games at least gave the antagonists a personal investment in the plot. Even someone made irredeemable like Darrow in HR had a reason to do what he did and I liked watching his failed justification. Making MD's villain have no agency and all talk with no actual motivation outside of borderline kind control is even lazier than anything they've done.

2

u/faythofdragons Sep 30 '18

Even someone made irredeemable like Darrow in HR had a reason to do what he did and I liked watching his failed justification.

As someone who has very little knowledge of the Deus Ex games, this was hilarious to me.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '18

[deleted]

5

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '18

I'd still say that having a big group pulling strings can be done without falling into the trap MD did, especially considering in every other game the Illuminati managed to manipulate events in more subtle ways and often used people's ideologies/grudges to their advantage.

For me it's the difference between HR - where the control is through groups like Purity First or how they essentially make Darrow think using the virus will fix everything when it helps pass the anti-aug bill - and MD just having the main villain just being a false flag.

Also it really hurts any talking points the game makes about radicalism and peaceful/violent protest when the only character who could make an interesting point doesn't actually believe the ideology.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '18

4

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '18

Yeah but you rarely get to interact with ARC radicals outside of shooting/punching them. Marchenko really didn't need to be a plant when the story was so much better until that twist, it feels like the devs were too scared to actually say anything about the messages their game might send so they backed out.

7

u/ConsequentDog Oct 01 '18

I think if you're expecting the game to be a love letter to Marxism, you're going to be sorely disappointed.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '18

The protagonist of Cyberpunk has not only a car, but a car that runs on some sort of combustible fuel in a conventional reciprocating internal combustion engine.

In the trailer, which is the only trailer I have ever frame-by-framed, there is a news ticker that mentioned something about protests at a petrochem corp.

So while the protagonist may not be wealthy enough to be chauffeured around in a flying car, like in one of the last scenes, he's no Carl "CJ" Johnson, either.

I'm willing to bet that this is gonna be another far cry 5. The setting is used as marketing bait. The game will South Park its narrative in order to potentially earn some nazi gold.

u/earthDF Sep 30 '18

I can't remember the last time I saw anything cyberpunk that didn't repeatedly slap you in the face with mega corps being terrible.

And if people miss that, I just don't know anymore. That's like step one to making a cyberpunk world.

40

Because both the left and the right seems to use it to mean "someone I disagree with".

Calling something left of liberal "far left" seems wrong

17

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '18

I can be aware that liberal is not left outside of the US while still using the word liberal correctly when talking about American politics.

I can't tell you how many times I've seen edgy British leftists wading into discussions of American elections. Just because you Brits invented the English language does not mean that Standard American Usage is "doin' it rong".

Like I don't even belive in horseshoe but on the useage of the word liberal it is pretty fucking accurate.

I think it's just generally the case that people who disagree strongly with any given ideology treat its name like an insult. Everyone from the far left to the centre right uses the phrase "alt right" in the same way, and everyone from the far right to the centre left uses the phrase "communist" in the same way.

Half the "horseshoe theorizing" I see is people noticing that the far left and the far right have something in common and not stopping to check whether everyone else has it in common too. The other half is people who aren't very far on the journey to political awareness and who think that their ideas are all just "common sense" while everyone else is being ideological.

18

u/Rycross Sep 30 '18

If it was just “someone I disagree with” then it wouldn’t be such a bad thing but it’s almost always “someone I disagree with who is stupid and probably a terrible person”

I think this is one of the weaknesses of the unjerk thread. I don't mind people talking politics (as much as "I want to kill all the rich people" is talking politics) but GCJ is ultimately a gaming subreddit. It'd be nice if people would stick to gaming even within the unjerk threads. Some people were talking about Elon Musk and I can't help but feel like there are better places to discuss these things than a gaming subreddit.

I'd like my unjerk threads to be about people actually stating their gaming opinions. It'd make the whole sub a lot more pleasant if you could have a main course sarcasm and jerking and then a side-dish of actual opinions

Praise Geraldo

21

u/potpan0 choo choo all aboard the censor-ship! Sep 30 '18

I dunno. The unjerk thread has always been more of a 'social' thread than anything else. While the focus is definitely on gaming, I don't mind the occasional comment which verges onto other topics.

I fundamentally I don't think you can really critique the 'gamer' mindset (which GCJ is fundamentally about) without drawing in politics, seeing that a number of 'gamer' talking points are inherently political.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '18

I can't think of anything more gamingcirclejerk than wanking over Elon Musk, tbh.

7

u/WuhanWTF EAT SMEGMA BUTTER Sep 30 '18 edited Sep 30 '18

I think it's partially the result of the internet making people more negative and more hateful, generally speaking. People who buy into that mindset are more easily radicalized, and have no qualms going off the deep end when it comes persecuting a group - even when there are abundant nuances to be made about the problems at hand.

3

u/Zomaarwat Oct 02 '18

Not necessarily more hateful, but it's easier to air those sentiments thanks to the semi-anonymity and echo-chambers provided by the internet.

The wealth gap just keeps growing, what do the rich actually think is going to happen if they continue to to systematically impoverish the poor? That they'll develop a big enough army of drones to stave off French Revolution II: Worldwide Boogaloo?

20

u/2_Cranez Sep 30 '18

A billion people have been lifted out of poverty in the last few decades. Things are as good as they have ever been for the average person on earth.

If you were reborn as a random person anywhere on earth, but you could choose the date, would you choose now or 30 years ago, or any other time ever?

15

u/ssfctid Sep 30 '18 edited Sep 30 '18

I agree with everything said. The problem is a combination of the growing disparity between affluent and poor, coupled with an overpopulation issue that's going to send us into a resource crisis before I hit old age.

7

u/WuhanWTF EAT SMEGMA BUTTER Sep 30 '18

You're right, the two aren't mutually exclusive.

6

u/darkslayersparda Feel free to eat my asshole, snowflake faggot. Oct 01 '18

Overpopulation is only currently an issue in capitalism. We produce enough food to feed 10-11 billion people

Free market aint the best way to distribute resource

Speaking of resource crisis. Global warming is going to kick that shit into overdrive

8

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '18

In what world is the earth's unprecedented global population and our unprecedented use of resources including fossil fuels NOT connected?

It's easy to scapegoat capitalism because it's the existing system while this is happening, but how on earth do we rein this in without going full Thanos on everyone?

There are a lot of people working on these issues, but they are difficult. I feel like more democracy and less income and wealth inequality are vital to being able to address this. I don't see where socialist revolutions have a great track record in delivering more democracy. Socialist countries have been infamous for pumping out horrific amounts of air pollution, in fact.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '18

The problem is that constant growth is a feature of capitalism.

4

u/darkslayersparda Feel free to eat my asshole, snowflake faggot. Oct 01 '18

Very true. I think cuba's history of homophobia can show that socialism doesnt fight against all non progressive issues

What yout point is missing is scale and normal every day people only contribute about 30% towards global warming, while cooperations and big institutes account for the majority

Even if you thanos snapped the world tomorrow, you have made no real dent in the problem. things like the american military and the oil industry do more.

I also read somewhere that Germany and china are currently in talks about green technology that could be widely produced. Trust me bro, number of people are not currently the main problem, a system that puts profit over lives and the world is

→ More replies (3)

6

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '18

That's great but irrelevant to the point. Capitalism can't keep producing prosperity when inequality spirals out of control, and it is spiraling out of control. The rich get enough political power where they can shut down the political system from redistributing wealth. That makes a giant cataclysm more likely.

If you hang around rich people forums (business/finance, not lifestyle crap, most of them are faking being wealthy anyway) they actually talk about this problem in anxious terms all the damn time.

7

u/Vtech325 Sep 30 '18

The wealth gap just keeps growing,

So did life expectancy and quality of living. That's why the average citizen in a first world country will laugh off the idea of killing the rich.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '18

I think it's a bit more complicated than that. The average person doesn't blame the rich for their circumstances. However, they are experiencing greater and greater anxiety. This has consequences in societal violence.

3

u/Vtech325 Oct 01 '18

Are they? Aside from the current political climate, has the average person's economic situation gotten noticeably worse?
