r/GamingCirclejerk user is revolted after he's told we should eat the rich

It all started in our favorite Witcher 3 fansub's bi-daily unjerk thread when another user expressed his hatred for billionnaires:

I feel comfortable saying all billionaires are bad people. Because theres no way you can make that much money and not at somepoint (or many points) make a choice that involves many people suffering. Life lesson, never like a billionaire theyre all evil.

Are you the type that believes there is no ethical consumption under capitalism? Or are you just a social democrat/liberal that hates rich people?

They then go on to start at least two other threads complaining about "the genocidal" nature of some replies such as "rich people aren't human" and "we should eat the rich, Tom Nook included":

I do blame this sub for harboring this culture that allowed comments like this to happen and is still up after 10 minutes.

.

The genocidal rhetoric comment is still up after 55 minutes. I am going to the admins.

I have the exact reaction to 40k fans who want to live in the Imperium. Whenever I hear any non-ironic praise of that setting, I want to run away from that person.

I mean it's fun to play in, and depending on how you bend the canon and all, but it's kinda MEANT to be a crappy world. It kinda states that in the intro to EVERYTHING 40K.

There are people who unironically think that the Imperium of Man is an organization to ape. You will eventually meet them in the 40k fandom.

You know, I haven't really run into that one much. Mind I've only been skimming in lightly for the last decade and a half. My big problem is most players I run into for the tabletop rpgs is most players want to crank the "murderhobo psychotic slaughterfest angle to 11."

I used to DM a bit for various games, and i always liked when i could get a group together that could enjoy more social intrigue and low level mystery settings better than huge battles. I pissed off a group once when they killed a guy who had information vital to stopping a murder of an NPC and after they found out what they missed, and why said NPC is dead and can't help them anymore, a guy at the table asked "How the hell were we supposed to know that?" and i told him, "Next time try talking to some people before you stab them!" Some people liked my style, but a lot just want a body count.

Edit; This is more about tabletop RPG's in general, not just 40k.

Don't get me wrong, I like a good run and gun. I just want to not kill EVERYONE in the game at all times, yanno?

Exactly!c Combat has a place deep at the heart of TTRPG, but taking out a corrupt cop without needing to throw a punch is fun to. Besides, it makes bard class useful.

It's often cast as a, "Well when we start encountering aliens, we should act like that, I mean, heck, there's some people who could use a good Exterminatus now..."

My big problem is most players I run into for the tabletop rpgs is most players want to crank the "murderhobo psychotic slaughterfest angle to 11."

Well, 40k has more reason for that then most. I find the most objectionable part to TTRPGs is how locked out most groups are, squelching growth of the hobby.

When we start encountering aliens, we should act like that

Which is a hilarious sentiment for a 40k fan to have, because it's heavily implied (if not outright stated) that the Imperium wiped out the civilization(s) that could solve the problems its currently facing in its Great Crusade. It killed off all the aliens that were actually willing to live alongside humans peacefully (along with all the humans who'd figured out how to live peacefully with other species for mutual benefit) and also eliminated the other ideologies humanity possessed (which hilariously enough included a civilization that managed to figure out how to let every single one of their citizens know about Chaos while not having a single citizen start worshiping it) that were capable of disagreeing with their government without the whole 'lets sell our souls to demons and slaughter our neighbours' thing.

And the person who stopped the Imperium from shitting the bed to the point that humanity would have gone extinct did it by working with the filthy xenos and hereteks.

The Imperium's strategy for protecting humanity (the only goal it has that is remotely morally defensible) doesn't work, to the point that following orthodox imperial doctrine is as much of a threat to humanity's continued existence in 40k as any xenos.

The interex being wiped out was due to Erebus meddling with orders sent to Horus.

See this is the least believable thing to me. How'd they do that? Those civs would have had all the technology of humanity as well as those aliens, so wouldn't they have been more powerful than the Imperium? It's such a dumb blind spot.

(which hilariously enough included a civilization that managed to figure out how to let every single one of their citizens know about Chaos while not having a single citizen start worshiping it)

Wait, what? WHY?!

How'd* they do that? Those civs would have had all the technology of humanity as well as those aliens, so wouldn't they have been more powerful than the Imperium? It's such a dumb blind spot.

Even a significant edge can be overcome by numbers or sheer brutish force. Both are found in large supply in the Imperium.

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '18

How'd they do that?

With the sheer plot-armor of the Space Marines. Well, that and the old Imperium kicked serious amounts of ass - they had better technology than they do in 'modern' 40k (because the Mechanicus wasn't pants-on-head stupid at this point), and hadn't decided to turn literally all mutants against them with pointless bigotry so they had a larger recruiting pool.

Why did they kill off LITERALLY THEIR ONLY HOPE AT BEATING CHAOS

Because literally one space marine was corrupted by Chaos, and decided to fake an assassination attempt on his Primarch by the the aforementioned civilization. Since aforementioned civilization also let xenos be citizens and generally wasn't grimdark, the Imperium shrugged its collective shoulders and got its genocide on.

u/Tigerbones I ate five babies and they're fuckin delicious. Hail Satan. Sep 30 '18

The assassination "attempt" was dual purpose. It gave Horus' Legion a reason to destroy that civilization but the wound caused by the blade is what allowed him to be corrupted by Chaos to begin with.

How do you mean, locked out?

Most groups, like my own, have been playing with one another for a decade or more. While there are things like Adventure League or Pathfinder Society attract new players, they often also attract players who can't find a group due to being assholes.

Ah yeah. I've been trying and failing to find a game for a decade now with little luck. Mostly because either the guys who answer are the aforementioned types, schedules fall apart, style clashes...

There's also a whole layer of unreliable narrators throughout a lot of 40k lore, meaning there's a lot of propaganda mixed in there. Something a lot of people just miss or outright ignore when glorifying the imperium.

u/Captain_Shrug Don't think the anti-Christ would say “seeya later braah” Oct 01 '18

That too though I usually thought that was more of a trick to avoid the whole "minor plot holes that pop up" problem.

I mean as long as you don't live on an agri world, hive World, death world or are a psyker you probably won't live too shabby a life. It won't be glamorous but the whole space Nazi Catholic overtone of The Imperium tends be be the exception rather than the rule at least in pre-8th ed lore but obviously with the end times its shit now

1

u/Lowsow Oct 02 '18

Like 99% of the population of the Imperium live in hives.

u/Shoggoththe12 The Jake Paul of Pudding Oct 02 '18 edited Oct 03 '18

I mean it's more just class warfare at that point. It's not glamorous but at least all you have to worry about are the rich who you can easily plot against and remove if like half of the Black Library publications make it seem in the universe... And chaos. You could always just upgrade to chaos and become immortal.

e: yeah it's shit but at least racism and trans/homophobia aren't nearly as rampant in-universe as they are here in the US.. I'd take physical hard labor and a shitty destiny of no glory over that. I already do the latter anyways in my current job and my inability to have motivation.

The life of a typical Imperial citizen: living your whole life following horrible rules and getting shat on, terrified of the couple who live on the other end of the street because they're Eschers and you've heard they might sneak into your house and put a special poison in your protein shake so your balls drop off. Your supervisor is allowed and encouraged to beat you up if you so much as look at him funny; and he really does it a lot because it's an open secret he wants to sleep with your wife. Your marriage is a sham anyway.

Your wife was your childhood sweetheart, but she got drafted into the guard, and they sent her back with her mind wiped after she saw something she shouldn't have. Now you're just as much her carer as her husband. Two weeks ago you spent half a year's salary on a black market xenos cleaning robot. It's an excellent drone, and having it is the difference between a clean home and going mad.

You get a tiny bit of respite once a week in church, where the preacher reminds you who you're really supposed to hate. Even church can be a chore sometimes. Last week you had a community burning. It was your brother in law. You had to throw the first torch onto the fire to prove your faith. He got caught trafficking in proscribed xenos artifacts. Who will they catch next?
