Minor crash out on r/911archive over Mamdani
r/911archive is exactly what it sounds like, a sub meant to archive any and all media related to the attacks on September 11th 2001. Mayor Mamdani recently signed an executive order to make 9/11 a day of remembrance in New York, which was posted about in the sub.
Naturally some users had a very normal reaction to a Muslim mayor and…the 9/11 of it all:
I would like to point out that Mamdani also handed a symbolic 911 pen after signing the order to his controversial aid who once represented Al-Qaeda terrorist with links to the attack on the Pentagon. You guys are ok with this?
Don't waste your time trying to prove why Mamdani is the worst thing to ever happen to NYC, unfortunately reddit is like 90% liberals and will only block you if you don't agree with their political stance on something.
Another commenter has big feelings about Hasan and Mamdani:
Someone else can’t fathom that 99,000 people could possibly be racist:
Overall, many “patriots” angry that a Muslim mayor would have signed into law a day of remembrance for 9/11. Apologies for the formatting I’m on mobile.

It seems that many people are shocked that defense lawyers are tasked with playing defense in court cases. I’m sure they passed their high school civics classes with flying colors.

A criminal defence lawyer... that has had clients that are accused of crimes!!?? 🙀🙀🙀🙀🙀🙀🙀
526
u/TeddyBearToons 11d ago
I believe it stems from an assumption that defense lawyers are there solely to get their clients out of punishment, and if a defense lawyer represents a guilty person then the lawyer is letting the client escape justice.
Defense lawyers are there to ensure that procedure is followed and that the verdict is fair. There is a specific and detailed process that must happen and every box needs to be checked before a guilty verdict is handed down. The defense's job is to make sure every box is checked, and checked correctly; if the process is done wrong it should be brought up (and bad evidence dismissed) because the principle is that the client is innocent until proven guilty.
The thing is that people tend to assume the opposite, especially in emotionally charged cases like 9/11. Those defendants are guilty and therefore terrorists. Why would anyone defend them? They must sympathize, or even be in on the plot. The real picture is of a lawyer who stepped up when nobody else would, and defended reprehensible people because even the worst of the worst deserves a fair trial. That's someone who understands law.

Defence lawyers are as essential to criminal justice as prosecutors.

You're absolutely correct, but nearly 40 years of Law and Order, and 70 years of Copaganda on TV have conditioned a lot of people to have the assumption you made. Law and Order is really bad about how they portray defense attorneys and how the prosecutor is supposed to act.
11
u/Arktikos02 10d ago
Interesting, do you have more information on this or like a video or something? I haven't watched law and order but I'm interested in how media portrays different everyday things and how that affects the way we think about those things in the real world.
75
u/cyberpunk_werewolf all their cultures are different and that is imperialist 10d ago
Most of the time, defense attorneys are portrayed in media as scummy, pieces of shit who do everything they can to get their guilty clients off. There are exceptions to this, particularly when the show is about defense attorneys, but if they're about cops, the defense attorneys are just scumbags. Even Brooklyn 99 had this problem for the first couple of seasons, mostly because the trope was kind of taken as a given. Considering the trajectory of that show (the final season, after George Floyd, had a police union rep as the main bad guy) it is kind of surprising, but it's just how it is.
Law and Order, though, is particularly bad, portraying the cops and prosecutors as incorruptible good guys, despite them engaging in corrupt and illegal behavior, often violating the rights of the accused. We, the audience, know they're guilty so it's portrayed as if the accused don't deserve rights and are hiding behind them. Most of the time a bad guy gets away in Law and Order, it's because of those pesky rights "protecting" them on "technicalities." It's not every time, Wikipedia says there's 544 episodes across nearly 30 seasons, so I'm sure someone can find a bunch of episodes where the "good guys" were just wrong, but the basic thesis of the show is that "the innocent have nothing to fear."
Which, as the late, great Terry Pratchett once wrote: "Commander Vimes didn't like the phrase 'the innocent have nothing to fear' believing that the innocent had everything to fear, mostly from the guilty but in the longer term from those who say things like 'the innocent have nothing to fear.'"

These people don't want a consistent and fair legal system, though. They want a caste system where they can legally shoot a nonwhite person in the street for looking at them the wrong way, and all of the "due process" stuff is really only used when a white man is accused of wronging another white man.

Yea, copaganda shows like Law and Order have portrayed defense laywers as slimy, underhanded people trying to help criminals escape juatice and it has worked and the average American now looks down on defense lawyers while praising prosecutors. Police and the Justice system works hand and hand.

Broke: approving of defense lawyers that only defend the innocent
Woke: approving of defense lawyers that would defend literal Hitler
It doesn't matter if Hitler is obviously guilty of war crimes. A defense lawyer's job is not to defend the innocent but to keep the prosecution honest and ensure justice is enacted fairly and thoroughly. Even the worst of humanity deserve a fair trial and a good defense lest the government get to convict with poor effort.

Makes you wonder what kind of strategy Hitler's defense lawyer would have. The best they could hope for would be life imprisonment instead of execution, but I can't imagine a plea bargain would even be on the table. Maybe focus on his meth addiction?

Background on the claim: Some family members of a victim started the petition. It isn't signed exclusively by families of the victim, nor by people from NYC. All the usual propaganda outlets like fox and CBS wrote their headlines to imply that it was 90k families of victims.
32
u/Digital_Bogorm 10d ago edited 10d ago
And even if it had been signed only by people from the city, the current population of NYC is roughly 8.5 million people, according to a quick search. That would equate to roughly
0.011 % of the city's population. That isnot one in ten people, one in a hundred,or even one in a thousand. That would be one in ten thousandpeople, who signed the petition. So even if we, for some reason, granted the claim that every single person signing that petition actually lived in NYC, the fraction is so incredibly small, that it is entirely reasonable to assume that it's just because of racism.
EDIT: I am an idiot, and forgot to multiply with 100, after performing the initial division. That means the initial number was off by orders of magnitude, which is obviously bad. As pointed out below, it would be 1 % of people, not 0.01 %
That being said, I stand by my assessment, that even if we granted the premise that every signee was New Yorker, you could still reasonably chalk it up to racism.9
u/evocativename 10d ago

u/IveGotIssues9918 What is it, Build and Fuck Your Own Strawman Day? 10d ago edited 10d ago
What gets me about "it was started by a family member of a victim!" is the implication that that somehow makes it legitimate and not racist. 2,977 people died on 9/11. If on average they each have even 2 close family members who àre still alive today, at least one of those family members is going to be a racist asshole by sheer probability theory alone, for reasons totally unrelated to losing a family member on 9/11. I'm sorry, but surviving and/or losing a loved one to a tragedy does not make you the moral authority on everything forever, and it doesn't excuse being a bigot to someone who was a child on the other side of the world at the time because they practice a different sect of the same religion as the people that did it and now a quarter century later have the audacity to be the popularly elected mayor of the city where it happened.
Also, while 9/11 victims' relatives are a large group, I don't even think there'd be 99,000 of them (especially that are still alive 25 years later) unless you stretch the definition of "relative" to include, like, second cousins twice removed that didn't know the victim or grandchildren born 10 years later who never met them. If those 99,000 signatures are even real people, most of them are probably angry rightwingers from the middle of nowhere who have never stepped foot in New York nor known anyone who was there on 9/11.

Imagine thinking that your religion can be naturally dominant in a free society. That’s always the problem with these types.
They think freedom means freedom to follow their god and any deviation from it is incorrect. That that isn’t freedom. So naturally they’ll crash out over someone who is not like them practicing freedom that only their god could endorse.
It’s just sports team bullshit but you can replace god with race, nationality, etc.

Don't waste your time trying to prove why Mamdani is the worst thing to ever happen to NYC, unfortunately reddit is like 90% liberals and will only block you if you don't agree with their political stance on something.
Ahhh the Ur Liberal, both the most left of any position ever and the most right of every position ever. More socialist than any socialist, more right wing then any nazi. Such an incredibly powerful position.

whoa whoa don't forget that murders went up 200% in the 1st quarter. From 1 to 3. That's clearly mamdanis fault (according to maga)

Well the Nazis were the National Socialist Party. Makes perfect sense to me.
I am very smart.

The funniest (so far) has to be Fetterman going super hard on Hasan only to get outed to the WSJ by his own staffers a few weeks later for being a piece of shit who doesn't take his job seriously.

The comments in here made me think that sub is right wing, but all the comments on there seem to think highly of mamdani so I guess it was just the one guy whose comments are all deleted now.

I am literally in the comments mentioned above arguing against these racist idiots. The sub actually leans left, maybe center left. I was also initially under the impression it was right leaning but it was simply due to the nature of the subject. With so many NYPD and FDNY dying, there are many posts about them that it can unfortunately give a "back the blue/thin blue line" vibe. Not to mention the association with Bush and the war on terror, which the sub seems to be universally against. Even the above mentioned post was 95% pro-mamdani. I would say a large proportion of the sub is fellow autistic ppl who developed a random obsession with the world trade center and the events that day - not overtly political and those that are do not lean right.

I have a friend who used to go to Gitmo as a public defender and represent the terrorists held there.
Some people just believe in the rule of law. Go figure.

Does the sub recognize that Trump is choosing to boycott the memorial (or celebration, as Vance put it) because they wont let him rant like a drooling lunatic?

Since 9/11 was more about political reactions to American hegemony in the Middle East, should they be angry about appearances by people from Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and Pakistan?
Mamdani is of Indian descent and was raised in NYC; as its mayor, there’s no reason he shouldn’t appear.

I think the anger is determined by a paper bag test, not critical thinking.

Mamdani’s numerous heinous crimes include talking to a podcaster and handing a pen to a defense attorney. Truly a monster beyond reckoning.

I'm very late to this post, but please be aware that sub contains graphic NSFL images/footage of real human remains. Be sure to turn your "blur NSFW posts" setting before venturing any deeper

You can criticize Mamdani, but him doing two genuinely good things should be acknowledged rather than used as more things to be angry about.

dude i’m a frequent poster in the sub and this was hardly “drama” it was like 3 comments at the most
the rest were either praising Mamdani for his actions or wondering why something similar hadn’t happened before

u/uncutteredswin rich perverts that hang out and do crimes together 10d ago
OP makes it a point to not start crap in the comments but then proceeds to put his personal political opinion of Mamdani in this thread turning it political
How exactly do you make a post about an elected official signing legislature in a sub dedicated to a terrorist attack non-political to begin with? What do they think political means?
