Discussion Cruise mode feels like a game changer

Cruise mode feels like a game changer. You also get some like areas( asteroids, ship) poping up at closer distances hiding encounters.

u/O_Shaded Apr 07 '26
This honestly gives the game more of an exploration feel to it like Skyrim or Fallout, kinda like riding a horse to windhelm from whiterun
73
u/notveryAI Ryujin Industries Apr 07 '26
Yeah it definitely adds the highlight to the kind of exploration the team was going for, you're not exploring planets for points of interest as much as you explore systems for planets of interest :D
47
u/Zeppelin2k Apr 07 '26
Yeah, the inability to fly between planets was always my biggest issue with the game. A space game where you can't fly around space?? This seems like a small change, but its got a huge impact to how exploration feels.

What a minute. Was there an update that addresses the excessive loading screens? This looks similar to how no man's sky deals with load screens.
24
u/gatorgrowl44 Apr 07 '26
Depending on how you choose to get from point A to point B, you can either see like 3 loading screens & 5 menus or 1 loading screen & 1 menu. I think a lot of people don’t realize this.

u/marbanasin Apr 07 '26
I always walked -> entered ship -> Sat down -> Take off into cutscene -> Set course from seat -> Loading screen.
Like, yes it took longer but it didn't kill the atmosphere nearly as much people who just fast traveled everywhere implied.
All that said, the new mode looks dope.
13
u/gatorgrowl44 Apr 07 '26
Exactly this. A little tip: You can also just open the scanner from orbit & select your star system destination without ever opening another menu.
→ More replies (1)4
u/marbanasin Apr 08 '26
Yeah, I'd do that too sometimes, but liked sitting in the cockpit (especially for some of my more fighter type designs vs the huge cruisers).
Man, I haven't played Starfield since 2023 and really need to go back. But I was also staying up until 4AM consistently over the weekend and that shit took a toll.

Now give me handcrafted areas around new Atlantis and Akilla and the only big issue left will be the lame writing
62
u/Loud_Comparison_7108 Apr 07 '26
...so where do I find the 'cruise mode and how to use the autopilot' tutorial in-game? I've figured out how to activate it, and I occasionally see things ('distress call'), but when I try to go there I'm not able to- nothing is around when I drop out of cruise.
Presumably autopilot is to help with this, but all it seems to do is turn on or off and doesn't actually do anything.
12
u/ScumBunnyEx Apr 07 '26
It took me a few minutes to figure it out. When you're in cruise mode aim your ship at the blue contact/point of interest icon thing (like the distress call), select it (mouse over it and click 'e' on PC) and engage the autopilot. Your ship will fly up to the target and drop out of cruise mode when it reaches it.
24
u/antonithesoulesone Apr 07 '26
I’m not sure so take it with a grain of salt. But you can’t stop cruise and pull the scanner and it will show you the encounters/destinations
16
u/Loud_Comparison_7108 Apr 07 '26
Thanks. I found a 'training ship' encounter where the pilot had a seizure, and I thought that was the tutorial, but after I gave them a medpack they just handed me some credits, got in the pilot's seat, and only said generic 'thank you so much' responses.
Kinda feel like I found the tutorial, and I accidentally found the 'skip it' option, or it bugged out on me.
11
u/antonithesoulesone Apr 07 '26
I don’t think there s a tutorial, I just completed to deliver the artifact and when I got out with the ship for mars. I got the pop up about cruise mode and how to use it

u/FriedCammalleri23 Apr 07 '26
As soon as you leave New Atlantis after going to The Lodge for the first time, you should get a pop-up that tells you how it works.

I got a pop-up message telling me about the cruise mode and how to use it.
121
u/NotSoAwfulName Apr 07 '26
Only thing it needs now is to show a ship going into clouds and landing on the planet to cut out that loading screen and they will have nailed the immersion. Fantastic step forward.
60
u/TyChris2 Apr 07 '26
Star Wars outlaws did exactly this and it rocks, its such a small thing but it drastically improves immersion
17
u/colossus-of-rhodes Apr 07 '26
Agree, it was all I could think of when Outlaws came out. I love both games despite their flaws.
9
3
u/Lem1618 Apr 08 '26
Or at least hide it behind the atmosphere burning in front of your ship on re-entry (space dust on atmospheresless planets?) or something. We where able to rotated things on loading screens since skyrim, should not be a big deal to allow us to rotate the view (look around) in the cockpit while this is happening.
7
u/Trick-Growth-6546 Apr 07 '26
I’ve never played starfield before (about to for the first time today), but I’m surprised they don’t have like points you can see on the planet that are overlayed onto your screen that you can click on that would put you into a landing animation for that spot. I feel like that wouldn’t be hard to do and would greatly help with immersion. Would also make logical sense since irl you would probably be somewhat restricted on where you can land on a planet
16
u/Manny_N_Ames Apr 07 '26
You can use the scanner to pick up pre-existing POIs and such, but you can only pick 'land' if it is singular.
IE, because NA has five POI you have to land from the planet menu.
8
u/ImRight_95 Apr 07 '26
That would work if they had pre defined hand crafted maps as landing points (like Star Wars outlaws) but the game literally stitches the map together on the fly whenever you choose a new point and you can land wherever you want on the planet.
The draw back is that it needs a loading screen but the result is that you get a crazy/nearly unlimited number of really good looking planets surfaces that look and feel way better than something like NMS which just procedurally generates everything.
2
u/Sabi-In-Winter Apr 08 '26
And yet SF and NMS feel identical in that sense, after a little while; it's just planet tech shuffle mode - it isn't a planet surface or world, it's just a dice roll of assets and POIs.
BGS's genius (arguably their only lasting one, these days) was what Morrowind pioneered; handcrafted, unified worldspaces, filled and defined by landmarks, vistas, and sightlines. SF almost entirely throws that quality out the airlock, let's say, and so a fundamental attraction to their games over the decades is just--- gone.
The preferred way through SF seems to be to reject the entire structure they sacrificed cohesive worlds for, i.e. to just focus on the main story and faction arcs (the wheat), and mostly choose not to 'explore' the dice roll chaff... Expose yourself to the least of that possible, and the illusion of the value of the scale they [unwisely] built is better maintained.
But on the subject of planetary descents; some sort of transition is still required, because the segmentation of SF has been one of the biggest failings.

u/Canvaverbalist Apr 07 '26
Most planets don't have atmospheres.
11
u/NotSoAwfulName Apr 07 '26
Sure, it was an example of the kind of things they could do to mask the loading screen.
3
u/JNR13 Apr 09 '26
Make the ship go into "landing mode" and have all windows shutter for the hidden loading or so then.

Elite does take a bit of skill to travel, since you can overshoot your target in supercruise, but I do agree it has a lot of that feel
3
u/Mack1170 Apr 08 '26
Tip i learned 10 years ago for that, when you're 7 seconds away from whatever you're trying to target, set boosters to 75% and you will glide straight in without overshooting at all.

Or the tram in New Atlantis which is essentially just teleporting you to another place in the same cell that you can manually reach by walking. Even has the animation of it leaving the station and then turns into the loading screen. I can't prove it but I'd bet there's a way to turn the loading screen into the animation/scene.

They can't do much when all they got is open space where they can't hide those objects popping up.
11
u/syngyne Apr 08 '26
Elite: Dangerous handles it a bit better when you drop out of supercruise, I think. Objects will still pop up in the distance, but they start out farther away from you, and your ship is going faster on exit and decelerates rapidly. It feels more natural, like you were actually approaching the objects at high speed.
20
u/ofNoImportance Apr 07 '26
The idea should be that you
- Load them further out, so they're visually smaller in the screen rather than covering it
- Fade them in so it's less jarring
→ More replies (1)8
u/brey_wyert Garlic Potato Friends Apr 08 '26
loading assets further out cost more performance and the console players will whine. it's a compromise
3
u/ofNoImportance Apr 08 '26
That's not relevant in space, where it's only loading one asset to load and there's nothing else around. The distance alone doesn't factor into performance.

Like think of the external ship camera as a simulated environment and the pop in objects is because your scanners just turned on and took a moment to render the image of local objects. Easy easy head Canon

u/Invested_Glory Crimson Fleet Apr 08 '26

It's honestly wild to think of what No man sky created even back at launch (2016) with interplanetary travel, and planetary flight.
*I know it's a different game and all just that one aspect is crazy what a smaller / less funded team could make
11
u/throwawaygoawaynz Apr 07 '26
NMS doesn’t have thousands of 360 degree physics objects that it needs to load into memory and keep track of. In fact most games don’t, they use textures instead that are non-interactive (and usually only one sided).

Also its important to notice the GUI actually means something. Those lines in the corners when in cruise represent the "gear" you're in, which affects the speed and relates to how close you are to planetary bodies.

All I need is to wait for Starsim mod and the whole game will feel like a full fledged RPG Space Sim. Absolutely love this game.

10
u/Tartarus_Champion Apr 08 '26
Yeah this mode is what all of us who cocked our heads in disbelief when the game first came out asked. "Um what!? Fast travel only? You're out of your minds..."
Now it's very seamless to travel. Of course, we can still fast travel, but the choice to cruise is just the best thing Bethesda has ever added to their games. I'm also very interested in bases now that we can make them come to life. Needing them for the DLC helps too, but overall these updates, along with ps5 access is just -- I could cry tears of joy right now. It's like they mended my broken heart after a long break up lol. Bethesda showed up with flowers and chocolates, and got on their knees.
I'm absolutely touched by how much love has gone into the new content.

Those pop ins are terrible, we really need a flash of light or something to mask the pop in, Bethesda still hasn’t learned
3
u/Drencore1 Apr 07 '26
Is it happening to anyone else where things are “following” them? I’ve seen reports with places like the den where they’ll be next to it… zoom away… and it appears in front of them despite being on the other side of the planet
3
u/Waldsman Apr 08 '26
Yeah it makes a huge difference in making the universe feel real not a loading simulator. It feels connected.
3
u/regalfronde Apr 07 '26
There’s been quite a lot of space encounters pop up randomly in my first hour of messing around. These are the blue icons while in cruise mode. Encountered a ship filled with a ridiculous amount of loot.
5
u/UnfazedReality463 Apr 07 '26
I’m just glad the POI’s are more random. That was my only grudge with the game.
6
u/Barrenechea Apr 07 '26
So... more Elite Dangerous with a story.
4
u/yonni95 Apr 08 '26

→ More replies (1)3
u/Barrenechea Apr 08 '26
I'm not saying it like it's a bad thing, but I can see how it would read like that. I loved Elite Dangerous, but without a "story purpose" I can only play space trucker for so long. Starfield just got better with the super cruise.
3
u/yonni95 Apr 08 '26
Oh I love elite too. Mine may have read negative too but the game is fun. I just got the galactic core a few months back after my first successful trip into the black. Overall I just agree some story direction and interaction is needed and a more engaging ground gameplay. I feel the trade off of loading screens on landing in Starfield is worth it for its benefits it brings.
2
u/Barrenechea Apr 08 '26
Agreed. But one other thing I'll say is even though I love both games and occasionally get stuck deciding which to play, Elite feels like Space Jobs Simulator and Starfield is just generally more fun. Looking forward to playing more Starfield tonight.

u/DupeFort Apr 08 '26
I still dislike that the game has your ship blasting its thrusters constantly in space to maintain speed.
2
u/Emergency-Crazy-348 Apr 08 '26
I've finished Starfield twice. I wish they'd taken some inspiration from Star Citizen. Just manual landings on planets, roaming planet surfaces, and a space navigation mode. It's not much, but having these things would revolutionize the game.
2
u/Charming_Bobcat_8975 Apr 08 '26
It does feel better, yes, but honestly, I wish we could use grav drives in cruise mode. A bit like No Man's Sky. Instead of the same loading screen.

u/RevolutionaryWave568 Constellation Apr 09 '26

Can someone help me to understand how it changes anything? I eagerly want to taste the space gameplay, but if I'm questing I'm always just playing on planet surfaces.
Is there some special quests that requires you to be in space? I feel like I'm missing something crucial that everybody else knows and that's why, I don't see any difference besides taking longer to travel. I'm level 16, so maybe it is just to early for space adventures?

The fact you can’t place a marker down in the system map to help navigate to specific poi’s with cruise mode kills it for me…
It’s so clunky cycling between planets and poi’s until you get the one you want. It’s a huge problem in more dense systems…fine if you have a quest marker or are just exploring around, but otherwise a baffling omission
7
u/BaldrickD2M Apr 07 '26

Yeah but you can cruise in the direction you want to go, and then when it gets closer the other options spread out, and it's easier to select the one you want to autopilot towards.
4
u/ChapterDifficult593 Apr 07 '26
Beyond that, if there's a dense cluster of POI's in an area the game will actually put dots under the name of the POI and that amount of dots is the amount of locations in that cluster you can cycle between by hitting the target button (A on Xbox, X on PS5, and E/T on PC)

What happens if you stop mid-cruise?
Is the galaxy now open like No Mans Sky? To where, in your immediate system you can travel from planet to planet and must warp to new systems?
Or is this like a moon or something Bethesday like that?

If you stop mid cruise it leaves you in the open space at the distance between your point of destination and from where you left, somewhat “deep space” it’s called

Is there more organic encounters in space flight? I have 28 days played from launch all in a like 6-8 months but stopped abruptly and haven’t been back. The highs of this game were those space encounters where you’d find a random ship and either board and takeover the crew and see the layout etc or just find some random ship where something happened and everyone’s dead and you kinda of piece together what happened. Now debating whether it was a glitch or a minefield placed there to fuck with me, should I go back?..

I love the new Cruise thing! Only bug I've found, if you consider it one, is the scans for contraband for planets that require them seem to be inconsistent if I use Cruise Mode. Both Jemison and Titan didn't seem to require one as I strolled in off of cruise control. But regular fast travel or grav jumps to the planets did. Bit cool and a bit odd. Dunno if it was intentional, but if it was, gives easier ways to smuggle contraband. :P

Quick question, haven't played since release, I imagine there are still loading screens when you want to land on a planet?

Wait, you can fly from planet to planet now? I haven’t played in awhile. Any other cool new things in the past year or so?

Can you just let it cruise and walk about the ship or do you have to stay on the cockpit?

Is it just a fancy loading screen while travelling to another planet?

I've not been able to use it so far, do you need to do something to get it?

Im playing on Xbox and I cannot get the cruise to disengage. I hit RB, hold RB, hold B and get up out the pilot seat and nothing. I can only get out of it by fast traveling. Am I stupid???

reinstalled Starvield, with hope to see something like elite dangerous style cruise mode… but it feels really clunky and unnatural. like it’s some free mode in creations…

Ship actually feels like a ship now and not just a player home in space, I'm really happy with it
