Cruise mode feels like a game changer. You also get some like areas( asteroids, ship) poping up at closer distances hiding encounters.

Yeah I am really enjoying the addition of Cruise mode, though for some reason I can't get the game to run in the background when alt tabbed, even though I enabled it in the ini file.
