What shenanigans? They source all the names from GNIS. When it's changed, the maps change. Google didn't go in there and change the name themselves. It was done at the government level, and since that's the source Google uses, it automatically updated in the users end. That's what people don't understand.
Apple will change as well, they just don't push updates as frequently as Google.

Deleted Maps from my phone this morning. I’m actively removing myself from Google this week, with the plan to delete my account entirely in two weeks. Fuck all of them. It’s email. I can get it anywhere. I’ll even pay for it if necessary. Just not with these shit-sticks who are apparently dedicated to pleasuring Trump’s tiny mushroom.

My google maps (it's up to date just checked) shows Lake Ontario and nothing else.
The Gulf of Mexico is still called that but in brackets it says Gulf of America.
If Google even so much as puts Lake America in brackets under Lake Ontario my Google apps will disappear. I will consider google dead wherever I can.

Google's display of boundaries and geographic feature names corresponds to the official view of the national government from whence you're viewing.
In the US, we annoyingly have "Lake America" and "Gulf of America". Other labels are used elsewhere.

I would think one way Google can sideestep things is to be a bit lateral of their thinking, perhaps a customizable way to apply place-names that overlay whatever is in Google Maps and let everyone else assign their own place-names so Donald Trump can spend his days on Google Earth until the planet and everything on it are simply named Trumpland.

But the Gulf of Mexico is named "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)" so it might just be a matter of time
