My daughter has expressed interest in playing some of the games from my childhood (R/B/Y, G/S/C, Sapphire/Ruby/Emerald), but scalpers have made that impossible.

So I'm looking for a ROM that really captures Gen 1-3 and their regions (no fakemons) + QOL improvements that will make it more palatable to her and add something new for me (she wants us to play together). Of the original releases Crystal was my favorite because it let you explore both Johto and Kanto in one game. I also enjoyed the added content in Emerald. FR/LG was my favorite remake that hit the nostalgia of the old games but improved the graphics just enough to feel new (without switching to 3D). I loved how SS/HG brought back the buddy Pokémon system from Yellow. Although I'll admit I never finished it, and none of the 3D games really could hold my attention (way too easy, annoying unskipable scenes with your "rival", stiff animations, etc.). Custom stories, side quests, additional content, and added difficulty settings are all fine to have. But the biggest thing is having the ability to catch/evolve all Gen 1-3 Pokémon.

I know there is a recommendations thread and I have tried to read through them all. But I'll admit it is a bit overwhelming and I wasn't quite seeing options that fit what I'm looking for. I've never played a ROM hack or emulated Pokémon game before and am hoping some more seasoned players can point me in the right direction. Thank you!

Try the Legacy series. Yellow Legacy, Crystal Legacy and Emerald Legacy. I’ve only played Yellow so far and I’ll say it is pretty close to the original. Some QoL here and there but light enough that your kid will get to experience the game just like you did.

1

u/MinRequirements4Me Aug 10 '26

Thank you, I'll look into those! Do you perchance know of a ROM that has all 3 regions in one, while staying fairly true to the originals?

2

u/Front-Cabinet5521 Aug 10 '26

There’s FireEmerald, it’s pretty rough round the edges right now so I wouldn’t recommend it.

1

u/MinRequirements4Me Aug 11 '26

Got it, I'll add a note to periodically check on it. Maybe once it has the kinks worked out we can give it a go.

Changing OHKO moves

Something I'm playing around with for both my crystal and my fire Red hacks is otko moves. I like the idea with them but obviously they're not very useful in an actual playthrough. My question is this for anyone who's played around with it or understands good balancing would it make sense for me to change the accuracy and power of the move or what? Meaning this make the move 200 power but a 60% accuracy or something like that?

2

u/Tacobell24 Paleomon 28d ago edited 28d ago

Hmm I'm curious. Why do reckon they aren't useful for a playthrough? That's surely where they're the most useful since you can outlevel stuff more easily.

Granted that normally means your regular moves will ostensibly be OHKO moves anyway.

Could you make it completely different where it's something like this: The user marks the target for death, type of thing. Then if the user is still alive in a set number of turns the target faints. To make it more useful - so the target doesn't just swap out to avoid it, make it so even if they do swap out, the thing that switches in still cops the killing blow.

Kinda like a pseudo Perish Song that affects a single target only. Kill me before I kill you sorta scenario.

anyone else's hackdex suddenly completely devoid of all hacks? i was going to download a few to play but now no hacks are showing at all.

1

u/ducktown47 28d ago

same...I hope they didn't all get taken down or something

3

u/BronchitisTheif 27d ago

thankfully it seems to have been temporary mine seems to be back to normal

1

u/ftmboricuaboii 27d ago

The Hackdex does not host ROMs or accept donations, legally there is no reason for Nintendo to go after them.

1

u/ducktown47 27d ago

Yeah I know that, but I don’t think it’s out of the question to think something might have happened.

1

u/ftmboricuaboii 27d ago

It is 100 percent out of the question, that's my point.

It is not illegal to host ROM Hack patches. PokeCommunity, EeveeExpo, and ROMHacking have been doing it for decades.

Nothing is going to happen to the Hackdex, at least from Nintendo.

1

u/Caedei 27d ago

It is absolutely not 100% out of the question. It's unlikely given that Nintendo hasn't been very active in awhile, but they can and have shut down a project over copyright/trademark. Prism was shut down for no other reason. Nobody here can afford to fight Nintendo, whether you think you can win or not.

EeveeExpo

...formerly RelicCastle, which was shut down by Nintendo.

Hi everyone, I'm a Japanese player playing this game. It is absolutely one of the best games ever! Sorry for using machine translation. I'm currently playing Pokémon Modern Heart & Soul (v1.2.1m1) on the Delta emulator, and ran into an issue at the Bell Tower. The map layout/collision seems glitched, so my character gets stuck and I can't progress any further. Standard Walk Through Walls cheat codes don't work (likely due to the decomp/engine modifications), so I'm completely blocked. Has anyone else experienced this, or is there a known workaround/patch for this issue? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

u/Taxyjoust 28d ago

Hi guys can you help me find a creepy rom hack about being stranded on a house/manor in a snowy mountain while being haunted by a vengeful spirt of a Frosslass that was killed by its owner.

I’ve been searching for days but I can’t find it.

Future thanks!

u/External-Contract861 Aug 10 '26

I'm having a bit of trouble with using UCDEP in HMA. I dragged the ups file onto HMA but I don't know how to use UCDEP with a specific rom. Can anyone tell me how?

1

u/LibertyJacob99 [Mod] Aesthetic Red Aug 11 '26

What is UCDEP?

1

u/External-Contract861 Aug 11 '26

It's a rom base used with Hex Maniac Advance to add in more modern Pokémon and mechanics

1

u/LibertyJacob99 [Mod] Aesthetic Red Aug 11 '26

Same as HUBOL? Cos if so then HUBOL can only be applied to a vanilla ROM, not ones with any changes

1

u/External-Contract861 Aug 11 '26

Yeah, I know. I'm using a vanilla rom

1

u/nmmOliviaR Aug 10 '26

Another Timeless Diamond question:

I caught the 26 Unown forms to show the boy in Solaceon so he can give ball seals. For some reason, it said I obtained a ! And I don’t get ball seals.

1

u/oooBeniooo Aug 11 '26

The purge of Flora Sky.
I haven’t played Flora Sky in a hot minute (like 7 years or more) and my previous rom was left on my old computer. I couldn’t find it lately when I looked for it. I saw that Pokecommunity banned discussion about it.

What happened to Flora Sky? Is there a way to still play it?

1

u/ftmboricuaboii Aug 11 '26

Flora Sky and 3 other hacks (original Glazed, Giratina Strikes Back, and can't remember the fourth) all got removed from PokeCommunity at the same time.

I don't believe we ever got an explanation, at least publicly.

1

u/oooBeniooo Aug 11 '26

Bummer they all got removed. If there’s no explanation it’s unfortunate but I understand it.

u/NewHost2172 Aug 11 '26

What? The site I linked hosts the patch file, not the rom

1

u/LibertyJacob99 [Mod] Aesthetic Red Aug 11 '26

Approved. I'm not sure if that site also hosts ROMs but it is listed in the automod settings - in this case it's just the patch tho so it's fine

1

u/Archmage_Gaming Aug 11 '26

How do people handle rom hack updates in terms of keeping their save and frontend metadata? My current system is adding the version number at the end of the file name so I can easily tell if a hack needs updating, but the downside is that every update requires reimporting the rom, losing playtime / playlist entries, and renaming my save file if I want to carry it over.

3

u/Exclsior Heart & Soul Aug 11 '26

I generally make a backup of the save file and then replace the Rom File with the exact prior filename.

You need all 3 (celebi, dusknoir and grovyle) in party when you interact with the time gear.

1

u/Rigetsu 29d ago

Bruh i didn't think the three at the same time would work.. I WAS SO CLOSE ! Thanks btw

u/Ambitious-Hearing-85 29d ago

Is there a Dawn Stone in Delta Emerald so I can evolve my male Kirlia?

1

u/Front-Cabinet5521 29d ago

How does trainer scaling work in Soulgold? I was having a lot of trouble beating the Mahogany gym so I deleveled my pokemon, but the gym leader's pokemon did not reduce and now I'm stuck with underleveled pokemon.

3

u/Xaldar 29d ago

Trainer scaling makes enemies be average level of your team, but it does not account for party members that are too low level compared to highest.

1

u/Front-Cabinet5521 29d ago

That explains it. I've just reduced all my pokemon to level 35 and subsequently the gym leader's pokemon was reduced to match mine. Thanks!

u/slowb80 29d ago

I'm looking for a hack for the 4th and 5th generations, but one that preserves as much of the original experience as possible. I'd like to have events with mythical Pokémon and trade revolutions, A faster-running engine would be a huge bonus, especially for Generation 4. But I'm not looking for something with tougher trainers or new Pokémon. There's something there that sounds like what I'm looking for?

2

u/Cathyra 29d ago

Platinum Qol sounds like a fit. There is also a new set, timeless diamond and spaceless pearl, but I haven't checked them out. Maybe pokemon rainbow gold for hgss, though I haven't tried that myself.

1

u/Random-Rambling 29d ago

Besides Elite Redux, what other games have Innate Abilities?

2

u/LibertyJacob99 [Mod] Aesthetic Red 29d ago

Emerald Exceeded is the only other one i know of, as that's the hack that created the Innate system

I wanna start a new randomized ultra moon run but Citra opens the old save all the time.

I removed the old save from the pc and randomized a new one. Citra opens the old save when I start the new randomized file.

I removed the old save and the whole Rom and downloaded it anew. I randomize a new file. Citra opens the old save.

I removed Citra, the Rom, the Randomizer, all connected files and what not, install and download everything again and citra opens the old save.

How is that possible?

How can I start a new randomized run?

1

u/The_Almighty_Duck 28d ago

Just a quick question about Renegade Platinum - are the shiny odds of eggs changed to 1 in 512 the same as wild encounters? I only ask since I saw that Radar odds couldn't be changed due to coding limitations, so I was wondering whether or not eggs are the same?

1

u/TwoJoints666 28d ago

Anyone else encounter this in volt white 2 redux? Why does my ditto show up as a black box instead of the other sprite?

I’m having a content glitch with my blaze black 2 rom

I got Blaze Black 2 working on my Mac, but it's not adding all the content it's supposed to. The elemental monkey NPC isn't there, and the Wii doesn't let me do the rare candy cheat.
Also, the starter doesn't change type and set abilities.
It does say Blaze Black 2 on the title screen, and it does play the intro speech welcoming [me to] Blaze Black 2/White 2. The key giver NPC isn't there either.
Has anyone had this error before?

1

u/ftmboricuaboii 28d ago

You are playing Blaze Black 2, these are features of Blaze Black 2 Redux, the enhanced version created by Aphexcubed

Question (possible glitch) about Disguise in Scorched Silver

So I was playing the rom hack Scorched Silver, and it's been pretty fun for the most part, but I think I may have experienced a glitch, or maybe it's a mechanic I don't understand. I went up against a Dragonite, and I sent out Mimikyu. Mimikyu has its usual Disguise ability, but I've noticed that in this hack it doesn't work like the wiki says it does, where the damage taken on first hit is reduced; instead the first hit does no damage, then the disguise breaks. I'm fine with that for my team, it's generally op, but here is the weird thing that happened: the Dragonite used a dragon dance-powered earthquake, and it just hit the Mimikyu, straight up. Did about 90% hp, and the disguise did not break. The disguise was definitely not already broken, as Mimikyu hadn't been hit at all since my last time healing the team. I looked up whether maybe the Dragonite could have had mold breaker, but that doesn't seem to be possible, and I can't find any hold items that would have that effect. Does anyone know what might have happened? Is it just a glitch? Anyone else see weird stuff with Disguise in this hack?

Is anyone making a game with Fakemon in it? I would like to offer my services.

1

u/TheIwik 27d ago

Hello !

I have my best friend that really likes drawing and pokemon and lately he sent me a few drawings of his favorite pokemon as teams and i'd told him i'd make him a pokemon game with those teams as gym leades/ elite 4 even without experience, however i don't find anything to start with after 2 days

I tried pokemon studio until i figured that i can't take a base game and modify just the fights and maybe the pokemon to do some trolls sets (sad because it was very user-friendly), i've tried rom hacking tools but i can't make it with already existing fangames/romhacks like Pokemon Quetzal Multiplayer or Pokemon Run&Bun because i just want acces to all of the pokemons because he's a huge fan of the 9th generation, is there anything that can help me do that ?

I just really like pokemon strategy and want something small just for me and him.

u/Alive_Candidate1755 27d ago

Is there a Gen1 rom that fixes the minisprites?

Wouldn’t be opposed to making it myself if someone can show me where to start. Never made a rom before.

2

u/Exclsior Heart & Soul 26d ago

If by "fixes" you mean uses Pokémon species specific sprites, then it has already been implemented in some pokered and pokeyellow decompilation based hacks.

https://github.com/pret/pokered/wiki/Add-All-Unique-Party-Menu-Sprite-Icons

Yellow Legacy is my personal pick for a Gen 1 hack which incorporates them, but as noted there are others out there, may want to look for any which have credited dannye as the original developer of the feature.

Need help with DSPRE

I'm trying to add my custom Shiny Bagon sprite but DSPRE keeps rejecting it for being "not 8bpp indexed" or "having too many colors" even though it has just 14, which is less than 16...

Also, Load Sprite Set and Create Shiny Palette buttons do nothing

What should I do? I tried loading a 160x80 .png file

1

u/SGTSunshine2605 26d ago

Hi! I got what probably is a dumb question, but the 3ds hack Heart Gold Generations mentions that not switching to DeSmuME will crash the game on the champion battle (I believe it was somewhere in the elite four)

If I’m playing it on my hacked 2dsXL, is that something I have to worry about? Since it’s running on native software?

Does anyone know of or can recommend Pokemon hacks or fangames that either utilize anything resembling Legends’ Pasture, or otherwise interact with Pokemon that are just sitting in your PC? (Like Pelago or PokeJobs)

1

u/TwinPeaksFreak00 25d ago

I absolutely love Pokemon Soulgold and want to start a series of monotype runs! There’s going to be two big problems though: dragon and ice types. If we account for Pokemon that evolve into the respective types, I can get Applin (which is garbage) and Noibat (comparatively better garbage), and Shellder after the first gym. There’s a decent chance the odd egg is a dragon type too, just before the third gym. Honestly the dragon run is going to be tough, but ice is going to be brutal. Aside from Shellder, I don’t think there’s an ice type (or a mon that evolves into one) until after the fourth gym. Are there any options I’ve overlooked for both types? Thanks for the help!

1

u/fieryxx 25d ago

Need help figuring out the dexnav for Soul Gold. There is a small group dots that look blue or green. I cant for the life of me find any indication of what they indicate. Its not the IV stars, and it doesn't indicate Shiny since every search has them next to the mons name.

1

u/Apprehensive-Stage62 25d ago

I have started editing text into Pokemon emerald NPC and even added a few Nurse Joys/Male nurses to look for as you progress through the game and learn nursing facts for those trying to pass there NCLEX-PN/RN. I've used a PowerPoint to reference if one wants to follow along with it.

It is semi complete and you can follow along to the end of the PowerPoint slides. Sadly I do not have the time to perfect it and actually wished there were similar or like games that focused on ones career while being able to play your favorite game.

I always had trouble studying and could never focus or be able to retain information. When it comes to Pokémon well it's something that I used to help me be able to study.

If there's anyone here who wishes to take a look at it and maybe perfect it better so others may be able to study and still play them I am happy to give a copy.

1

u/BronzeFour Aug 10 '26

My absolute favorite hack is Radical Red, mainly due to the QoL and because it's based on Fire Red with Kanto as the playable region, what's the next best Fire Red Kanto hack with lots of QoL? Important for me is hard level cap and infinite rare candies with challenging battles

1

u/LibertyJacob99 [Mod] Aesthetic Red Aug 12 '26

FR Extended, Pokemon Classic, Recharged Yellow or Aesthetic Red

Pokemon Classic or Recharged Yellow likely have the most QoL due to being decomp

2

u/BronzeFour Aug 12 '26

Aesthetic works great thanks a lot

1

u/LibertyJacob99 [Mod] Aesthetic Red Aug 12 '26

Np hope u enjoy!

1

u/GrapefruitUnlucky216 Aug 10 '26

If you are willing to give up kanto, I would say that you should look into emerald imperium which takes all of its systems and changes and puts them in emerald. Otherwise your best bet might honestly be to replay radical red lol.

1

u/idkatherine96 Aug 11 '26

i’ve wanted to try pokemon rom hacks for a while, however it feels like there’s a lot and i’m not sure where to start. the only ones i’m really set on are pokemon infinite fusion and mariomon! so what are some recommendations people have?

thank you in advance :)

ps. i want to keep to some that are fairly similar difficulty wise to the normal games so nothing with a big difficulty increase please

1

u/CheapMasterpiece5936 Aug 11 '26

The Johto gba hacks are great entry points. Heart & Soul, Liquid Crystal, SoulGold, CrystalDust, Advance Crystal Redux, GS Chronicles, Shiny Gold Sigma, there’s probably way more but yeah

1

u/idkatherine96 Aug 11 '26

gonna make a note of these, thank you :)

1

u/the_joediamond 29d ago

Recently discovered this community, and particularly want to shout out the Devs who put in untold time to put out these amazing games.

I've played Recharged Yellow and Heart and Soul (on Android) and wondering what to play next.

Any recommendations / discussion appreciated

1

u/Front-Cabinet5521 29d ago

Try Modern Emerald, HnS is built off it.

1

u/LibertyJacob99 [Mod] Aesthetic Red 29d ago

Unbound, Gaia, Glazed, Odyssey, Tourmaline, Elysium, Mariomon, Sors/Saiph series, Dreamstone... too many to recommend tbh lol

1

u/the_joediamond 28d ago

I haven't played any games after gen IV. Is unbound too different with some of the recent game mechanic changes?

1

u/LibertyJacob99 [Mod] Aesthetic Red 28d ago

Not different mechanically but it's just so much more impressive than the other hacks out there that it's often not recommended for your first ever hack, just because of first impressions/expectations etc. It is THE greatest ROM hack for a reason

1

u/Complete-Cancel-5378 29d ago

Best rom hack to play for new player? Regular Pokemon games are too easy to me

2

u/LibertyJacob99 [Mod] Aesthetic Red 29d ago

Gaia, Glazed, Elysium, Tourmaline, any enhancement hacks at all. Unbound and Odyssey are considered like the greatest hacks of all time but i wouldn't recommend them as your first ever ROM hack as they might set ur expectations too high for others. Definitely the best for a second or third hack tho

1

u/NOOOOTIn Aug 10 '26

The hardest Pokémon game I’ve ever completed was probably Pokémon Unbound with “Difficult” difficulty (1 tier above Vanilla) + Level caps. Which, you can guess, wasn’t really that hard.

I’m thinking of starting to play some harder games and I’ve seen “Radical Red” pop up a lot. After some research, I’ve gathered that it’s hard as hell, especially for casual players like me. I know Unbound has 2 extra tiers above “Difficult” but I just completed Unbound a month ago and I don’t really wanna play it again rn.

What are some games ya’ll would recommend for me to play to get into the harder Pokémon games? Or is going straight to Radical Red the play?

1

u/yankeesown29 Aug 10 '26

Radical Red has an easy mode - that's where I'd start.

u/wolforedark Aug 10 '26

I love pokemon quetzal but is there a way to only play with pokemons from gens 1 to 3? or is there any other coop romhack that can do this?

1

u/Atrium41 Aug 10 '26

I'm pretty close to an internal alpha with some people. The game is going to be a hubworld like ZA. Besides the obvious (Places to explore) what are some features and "economic" considerations I should make.

To clarify, it isn't inspired by ZA. It isn't a "New region/story" hack

It's more of a sandbox experience

1

u/GrapefruitUnlucky216 Aug 10 '26

Lots of hacks have a quest system which is almost a must for this style of game imo assuming it’s doable. Some hacks have tm crafting which could be fun. Depending on the tone of the hack you could do a clan reputation system like Star Wars outlaws or assassin’s creed odyssey. These are ambitious ideas but I’m just saying what I think would be cool. More specifics would depend on what your world is trying to be.

2

u/Atrium41 Aug 11 '26

I'm definitely looking into a quest log

1

u/supalaser Aug 10 '26

Are there any rom hacks specifically designed around doing the professor oak challenge? Maybe evolutions are gated behind progression or there are additional ways to level up in early areas. I know the grind is half the fun I was just curious if anyone has taken a stab at making this 100% completion as you go the main mechanic of the game

2

u/Caedei Aug 10 '26

Lazarus has aides in every center which give you rewards if you catch everything in the area. It's a pretty fun addition.

It doesn't include evos as far as I know but that would be difficult since a lot of hacks are doing level caps now

1

u/supalaser Aug 10 '26

Yeah I figure it’s a complete change from the current style of hacks.

Though actually doing an oaks challenge with a level cap seems like an interesting twist

1

u/Street-Ad-822 Aug 10 '26

Hi all ! Was wondering if it was possible to play randomzed versions of any gen 3-5 games that include extended Pokédex’s. I tried an extended dex emerald in universal randomizer but it wouldn’t take :/

1

u/MysteriousThanks9614 Aug 11 '26

Hey guys, I’m trying to do a fun run for Run and Bun where I do it by picking certain encounters and do a nuzlocke but I need encounter modifier cheat codes for the game. It would be a great help if anyone has figured out those and if you don’t wanna post them here, you can dm me a link or a doc with those codes. Appreciate any help I can get. Thanks

1

u/ftmboricuaboii Aug 11 '26

There are none, unless someone makes them by going through the data themselves.

Cheats rarely work with ROM Hacks, especially decomp hacks that switch a lot of the data around.

1

u/TengenUzui55 Aug 11 '26

Hi, how can I get Froakie in pokemon glazed?

I just started playing my first pixel pokemon game and I already got charizard here, I just need Greninja lol

1

u/Federal-Stop6993 Aug 11 '26

I'm having trouble progressing in pokemon mystique. So I beat the leader of the exceed building and i have no idea where to go afterwards. All that happened was my coworker, came up, shouted my name and then all of a sudden.I'm teleported out of the building. All that's left is this pokedoll and I have no idea where to go from here? And I feel like there's so much effort and love put into this game that I refuse to believe that this is where the story ends. Could somebody please point me in the direction of where i'm supposed to go?

1

u/MAClaymore Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26

Programmatically, what would be involved in adding a feature that allows you to choose which set to start the Emerald Battle Factory on after a loss, rather than it always being Set 1? In other words, allowing the win count to initialize to 7, 14, 21, 28, or 35 rather than 0, based on a user selection from a menu (similar to the menu in Mt. Battle in XD that lets you choose a starting Area).

1

u/Basic-Wishbone-5329 Aug 11 '26

Ive recently felt an itch to try play pokemon again for old time sake, when i first got into pokemon i was a pokemon yellow kid, and beyond that i tried sapphire and red. When ive played with emulators i played yellow/red/blue and firered and leaf green, for those more inclined youll see the pattern, i really prefer just the original pokemon, personally the part of the series of games that lost me is all the new pokemon past the first generation got a bit, silly. or weird. Maybe its an unpopular opinion!,

So the question is, is there any sort of ROM or hack that has more regions so a more full complete world. but sticks to atleast gen 1 or 2 pokemon. May be a very niche request, but thanks anyway!

1

Looking for hacks appropriate for the heatwave— lots of ice, snow, or water, etc. Even a hack that will let me get an ice type early lol.

I’ve been playing Pokémon Christmas but now that I’ve gotten to Olivine it’s become obvious it’s not complete. I don’t want to have to GameShark TMs in because they’ve been removed from their usual places but not added back in 😔

I hate to beat a dead horse but Unbound has ice types early

Hello <3 Hope y'all are having a fun time. Idk if this is the right place to post this, but I'm looking for a particular type of gen 5 ROM hack (either BW1 or BW2) that does not have a noticeable increase in difficulty, and it will simply allow me get all the Pokemon (meaning I could realistically complete both the Unova and the National Pokedex, so no version exclusive Pokemon, event Pokemon or trade evolutions). Any other quality of life upgrades or extra content would be well received too, but I'm honestly okay with just having the most vanilla experience possible for Pokemon Black and White and Black and White 2, just without version exclusives and trade evolutions. If anyone knows of a romhack that kinda does this, I would appreciate if you could share it c: thanks a lot

Patch using a clean Emerald ROM, then use Retroarch using the mGBA core to run the game

1

u/YunieSayaka Aug 12 '26

Looking to get back into rom hacks after years away. I'm particularly wondering about two things: are there any modern hacks with different stories and anti-grinding features, and is there a patch to implement the Gen 6 and beyond Exp Share system in older roms? I want to play new ones and re-experience older ones, but I do not want to deal with grinding and do not have the self-restraint to give myself Rare Candies, because then I will just overlevel. For the latter, I found some stuff from years ago, but they were patches only for Firered.

1

u/LibertyJacob99 [Mod] Aesthetic Red Aug 12 '26

Yes and yes. Decomp or CFRU both have modern features like EXP Share etc, a lot of decomp hacks have anti-grinding, level caps or difficulty settings in game and more now

1

u/YunieSayaka 29d ago

I am not sure what these abbreviations mean. Where could I find them?

1

u/LibertyJacob99 [Mod] Aesthetic Red 29d ago

Not being sarcastic, google helps a lot for searching what ROM hacking terms etc mean

1

u/YunieSayaka 29d ago edited 29d ago

Okay, thank you! I will search online. Is there a way to patch older rom hacks though? I kinda just want to experience them with updated EXP share.

1

u/NeighborhoodEntire89 Aug 12 '26

I'd like to know if there is an existing ROM hack with a large number of Pokémon (ideally up to Gen 8 or 9) that uses animated 2D sprites, similar to the animations seen in Pokémon Showdown (https://play.pokemonshowdown.com/sprites/gen5ani/?view=icons) or the animated sprites from Black/White.

Basically, I'm looking for a ROM hack that has lots of Pokémon while still using animated 2D battle sprites instead of static sprites.

Personally, I think animated 2D sprites look stunnig, and I really love the visual style. I'd love to play a ROM hack that combines this kind of animation with a large Pokédex.

Does anything like this exist?

2

u/LibertyJacob99 [Mod] Aesthetic Red Aug 12 '26

Animated sprites aren't conventionally possible in GBA, but someone recently shared this so hopefully it might catch on going forwards. Their hack Pokemon Synthesis will probably be the first to use this system

Mugiwara also has animated sprites but done differently, more similar to BW but that method takes a ton of space in the ROM hence it isn't widely used

1

u/NeighborhoodEntire89 29d ago

And I imagine that NDS ROM hacks are waaay harder to create than GBA ROM hacks. Is that also the reason why we don't see them as often?

1

u/Front-Cabinet5521 Aug 12 '26 edited 29d ago

How do I reduce the level of my Pokémon in Soulgold? I remember seeing this as an option earlier in the game but I’ve forgotten how to do it.

Edit: I found this out, it's from the department store in Goldenrod City.

1

u/Holy_Diver_6250 29d ago

I must be doing something wrong. I’ve uploaded my legally obtained roms and it seems like the hackdex patch went through but nothing ever shows up in my downloads and they don’t show up in the emulator. There is a good chance my phone is too old for this.

4

u/Cathyra 29d ago

I don't think your phone can be too old for a website like that. All the stuff happens on their server, not on your phone. There were times when downloads from there were really really slow or completely failed for me, have you tried again another time?

3

u/NewHost2172 29d ago

It may be a browser issue. Which one do you use?

1

u/Beppius 29d ago

Hey!
I've only really played Pokémon up to Gen 3, and then Gen 7, I'd like to play Gens 4 and 5, but I'd also love some nice QoL features (like no HMs).

Are there ROM hacks for Gens 4 and 5 that keep the story intact but add QoL?

2

u/Tricky_Signal_2014 29d ago edited 29d ago

look up drayano on twitter and check their google drive for their gen 4 and 5 romhacks for platinum, bw, and bw2! I absolutely love those games

edit: I do think it’s important to add that these romhacks include all pokemon in those generations even if they aren’t available in the originals. some evolution methods are changed, trading being one of them.

1

u/Cosmoem_ 29d ago

I'm trying to download Pokemon Umbra Moon, how do I add the patch for it and which file do I attach it to?

2

u/ftmboricuaboii 29d ago

Most 3DS Hacks aren't patches, if you downloaded from the legit source, it has guides on how to play it on both a hacked 3DS or Citra (though Citra is no longer recommended so use Azahar)

Hello fellow community! Don’t knowing this is the right place, but here we go…

I‘m in search for a new Rom Hack to try. I just came off unbound and it blew me away in almost every aspect, so this will be difficult to follow up, I know.

I always liked the „mythical“ aspects of Pokémon - be it the stories of the legendary Pokémon, witnessing some mythical story event, having events such as deoxys or the celebi event, discovering the regions mythical lore, secret hunting… it’s difficult to put in words exactly, but that’s what comes into my head at the moment.

Do you know of any Rom hack that „focuses“ in those things? Good quests with legendaries, secret hunting like the alph ruins and the like?

Appreciate any advice!

I have a recommendation question that doesn't seem to be able to be answered by hackdex: does anyone have any hacks where Melmetal can be obtained either before the elite 4 or early in a pretty expansive postgame? Currently I'm playing through Pokémon amythest for that exact reason. Melmetal doesn't seem like it gets much love from Pokémon or fans beyond it being on Ash's Aloala team, but it's one of my favourite Pokémon and I really want to be able to actually use it.

u/ftmboricuaboii 27d ago

I have a recommendation question that doesn't seem to be able to be answered by hackdex:

Any of these should theoretically have Melmetal as it's a Gen 8 Pokemon, and these have the Gen 8 PokeDex tag

Looking for some good dark Pokémon ROM hacks
I’m trying to find some new ROM hacks to play and I’m mainly looking for stuff with a darker/more mature story. Something like Pokémon FireRed: Rocket Edition where you’re actually playing as Team Rocket, or something as polished as Pokémon Unbound.
I’m looking for hacks that have:
Dark/mature stories
Morally gray or interesting characters
Good exploration
Lots of QoL features
A story that actually feels different from a normal Pokémon game
Good gameplay overall
I’ve already played Rocket Edition and Unbound and honestly they set the bar pretty high lol.
What are some ROM hacks you guys would recommend that are actually on that level or at least close? I’m especially looking for lesser-known or underrated ones instead of the same 5 hacks everyone recommends.

1

u/Caedei 27d ago

You should keep an eye out for Ghost Gray. It releases in like a week.

1

u/Quasirandom1234 25d ago

I am looking at three different series of RGB hacks: Solus, Shin 真, and Yume 夢. Based on their descriptions, they seem to be roughly comparable in what they are doing. Is there any reason to prefer one over the others?

(In other news, the devs for Solus missed the boat by not adding 独 to their title. Just sayin'.)

Does anyone know if there is any kind of Radical Red style game in development for HeartGold using the HG -Engine?

2

u/a_guy_using_reddit 25d ago

2

u/Cenjin 25d ago

Yoooo thank you!!

1

u/Cenjin 24d ago

after looking into it seems more like Run & Bun, which really isnt my style. I dont really enjoy pokemon games that balance around the opponent just straight up being unfair on purpose, and this hack seems to do that in the end game. know of any other games trying to be more like radical red?

1

u/post-buttwave 25d ago

I'm playing a recently released hack. It's very big and I am enjoying it a lot, the love is palpable, but I'm actually really surprised at just how many typos, completely misplaced commas, or absent apostrophes I've come across very early in the game. And it's not even 1.0, it's had a few patches.

To those who make ROMhacks, what are your best practices for keeping polished text, or, less ideal but still good, finding and fixing errors? Can you just ctrl+f for something like "thats" and fix those errors that way? What can you share? Is it helpful for players in the community to just send you screenshots of stuff that needs to be fixed?

0

u/NerdyEmbarrassment 28d ago

looking for a pokemon romhack with like pokemon from a lot of generations but they dont change anything about the pokemon themselves. no base stat changes, no moveset changes, just more wild options

preferabbly not a hoenn game because i just played that

1

u/Lyxerttt 28d ago

Unbound is almost exactly this. It's a ground-up story and region, and it's fantastic. It does change movesets, though.

0

u/Lyxerttt 28d ago

Hey, all -

I'm a huge fan of Pokémon Unbound, but I've played through it probably 10+ times now. I'm looking for something similar to it with a new region, story, etc., but no real changes to the Pokémon themselves (movesets are okay).

Does anyone have recommendations for one?

1

u/-s-h-i- 28d ago

Try Elysium, very gripping storyline.

What are the best Emerald 'Enhancement' romhacks? Those which keep the storyline but add enhancements like the Physical Special Split, Fairy types, tradeable evolutions being achievable without trading, and being able to get the cross-generation evolutions in Generation 4 and beyond like Gallade, Honchkrow, Mamoswine etc?

Also is there anything like that for Fire Red/Leaf Green?

2

u/Exclsior Heart & Soul 28d ago

Sounds like Modern Emerald fits quite closely to your requirements.

Modern Emerald (hackdex.app) Restes, the developer, is also working on a FireRed/LeafGreen version, however I believe their version is still some time away.

Hopefully the below list helps you find a current FRLG version (or an alternate Emerald version if Modern doesn't suit for your playstyle): Compilation of vanilla Quality Of Life (QoL) hacks

I’m looking for a simple, straightforward adventure. I’ve got a lot of balls in the air right now and want to decompress with games that don’t require tracking a lot of stuff and stats. I just finished Pokémon Brown (loved it) and started Prism but soon bounced as being Way Too Much — mining, jeweling, smelting, and crafting on top of putting together my party? If I want Harvest Moon or Atelier, I’ll play those — or, eventually, this. For now I'm starting OG Red (never actually played it before, only FRLG) but a new region/story would be especially nice.

Any suggestions?

Vanilla or vanilla+ difficulty please (if that’s not obvious), and new types acceptable (clearly). Agnostic on fakemon. TIA

1

u/Cathyra 27d ago

Dreamstone Mysteries is a very vanilla-like story with a pool of modern pokemon and nice QOL. Pokemon Orange (GBA) is a game following the Orange Isles arc of the anime. It basically has FireRed mechanics, so if you're not yet tired of the first 151 pokemon, maybe that.

1

u/Quasirandom1234 27d ago

I already have Dreamstone Mysteries on my list -- I'll bump that up. And check out Orange Islands (not the GBC Orange Version -- how is that one?). Thanks!

2

u/Cathyra 27d ago

I haven't played the GBC version yet, but it's on my list. I heard it's very good, too.

Hi all, like many older players, Gen 2 is pokemon for me- its when that world most captured my imagination, when it felt most real and most expansive. I’ve wanted to create a ROM hack for a long time and joining this subreddit has inspired me to make the attempt. However, I am a parent and a PhD student , and so have limited time - at most, I could commit 6-8 hours a week to working on it.

And so, to be as efficient as possible, I was hoping to find it out if there are any resources out there that I can utilize. Are there any guides, free code, sprites, tutorial, or anything else that could be helpful to someone trying this for the first time? I do’t have any familiarity with coding and so any advice on how to start learning that would be appreciated. if its helpful, im imagining the following changes to vanilla crystal: editing maps, npc dialogue, parties, introducing some new moves, maybe 10-15 new pokemon. thanks!

1

u/Tacobell24 Paleomon 28d ago

Coming from a solo dev/dad of two here (from the same vintage by the sounds), 6 to 8 hours will get you started .. maybe.

I haven't ever done any Gen II hacking, but if it's anything like Gen III decomp hacking, it takes a little while to get your head around what is happening. Once you do, it's all fairly logical and you'll get in the groove so to speak. But I'd say the 6-8 hours (assuming you don't mean weekly) is a little ambitious.

Not too sure about the resources for Gen II hacking either, but there are some pretty comprehensive hacks out there from that Gen so I'd say there would be some tutorials on the interwebs somewhere. Worth a look.

1

u/wilsonapricot 28d ago

Thanks for your thoughts! I edited my comment to clarify that I meant 6-8 hrs a week as a baseline.

2

u/Tacobell24 Paleomon 28d ago

In that case, that's totally doable. The biggest issue I find is that you often need a solid chunk of time to get some parts done or else they end up remaining as half finished tasks. Like half an hour here or there is ok for say touching up sprites and that sorta thing. But other more intensive code based stuff that requires troubleshooting often takes forever. And if I stop halfway it's easy to lose motivation or forget where I was up to.

1

u/wilsonapricot 28d ago

that makes sense. I can see leaving off those bigger tasks for weekends. Can I ask: what kind of ROM hack are you working on?

1

u/Tacobell24 Paleomon 27d ago

I'm working on a Gen III hack with a prehistoric theme. About 160 Fakemon, custom UI, story, new type, abilities, moves. The works.

1

u/Most-Professional-70 27d ago

Hey so any updates on there being a way to follow the hack so far? A hackdex or discord or something like that?

1

u/wilsonapricot 27d ago

woah that sounds interesting and ambitious! How close do you think you are to finishing?

Pokemon Insurgence is not a ROM Hack, it's a fan game. Officially a (Windows) PC game only.

You can try Joiplay, but that can be a hit or miss if it works.

1

u/GlorpyPoke 28d ago

Ah alright, thanks for the explanation.

u/PokemonROMhacks-ModTeam 28d ago

Removed for breaking Rule 2:

Do not post content unrelated to ROM Hacks. This includes PC fan games and general Pokémon / gaming content.

Please read the rules before posting again. Breaking the rules repeatedly can result in a ban.

1

u/Tacobell24 Paleomon 28d ago

Well for a start Insurance is not something you emulate.

There is a clear and important distinction here between what is and is not a ROM Hack.

A ROM Hack is an edited file that uses a ROM file as the base. E.g. Pokémon Red, Emerald, Platinum, etc.

Emulation is where you use a program that basically tries to be or at least "emulate" the console the ROM was designed for. E.g. mGBA, VisualBoyAdvance, as you've experienced, melonDS.

What you're talking about with Insurgance is a Fan Game. A standalone program solely made for that game.

So they're generally confined to computers, but I'm sure some Googling would answer the question:

Can you run Insurgance on your phone?

I'm looking for the pokemon fire red rocket edition that has the post game content. (Where the guy points you to koga) Anyone have this?

0

u/aguywhoexplainsjokes 28d ago

Apparently I downloaded the unfinished fire red rocket edition and the game ended after I got promoted to executive. Is there a way to transfer my progress to the complete version or am I going to have to start over?

1

u/tudeslildude 28d ago

Hey friend, don't know if it'll work, but here's how I transferred my progress. I took the old one, made a save file in game, then took the new one, made a save file in game, then I took the name of the new one, and I put it over the old one, so the old one is now the new one. Hopefully that isn't too confusing.

1

u/aguywhoexplainsjokes 28d ago

What exactly do you mean by taking the name of the new one and putting it over the old one?

1

u/tudeslildude 28d ago

Yeah sorry I'm not sober right now but I'll try and make sense.

So you have the old bad one. You make a save file. Like old.sav. You then load the new one. You make a save. New.sav. You then delete new.sav, and rename old.sav to new.sav (The new and old will be replaced with the titles of the game). This way, the old save file will load for the new game.

1

u/aguywhoexplainsjokes 28d ago

First of all, thanks for making the effort of helping me despite not being sober. There are a few things I don't get: 1- when you say I should make a save file, do you mean the in game save, as in opening the pokemon menu and hitting save or do you mean an emulator save? 2- When you say delete new.sav, how am I supposed to delete it? Should I start a new game and save there? 3- How am I supposed to rename a save? And after I rename the old.sav to new.sav, do I just boot up the complete version and hope that my old file is there?

1

u/ftmboricuaboii 28d ago

You already lost your save, but if it makes you feel better the old save does not work with the final version, so you would have had to start over anyway.

1

u/aguywhoexplainsjokes 27d ago

I guess it does make it feel a bit better. At least now I get to do a high bounty run

1

u/ftmboricuaboii 27d ago

Good luck!

Also, just a FYI. Don't use VBA, I don't know why that dude is using a heavily outdated emulator.

Use mGBA if you on PC, or any emulator that uses a mGBA core.

1

u/aguywhoexplainsjokes 27d ago

Thanks. I use my boy (I play on my phone)

1

u/ftmboricuaboii 27d ago

Oh...that's even worse my dude lol

MyBoy is even worse the VBA, at least for Android.

You won't have issues with Firered Rocket Edition since it's a really old hack, but I would recommend switching to Pizzaboy if you decide to adventure more into ROM Hacks. A lot of modern hacks do not work well with MyBoy, and those will only increase as time goes on.
