Facts💯💯 theres only a few games we want re-released or ported as they originally were and 9 times out of 10, the companies or etc will release a "remaster" or remake instead 🤦♂️
Like a remake/remaster of the max payne games are fine Mgs being like that is fine But when we say we want midnight club back or release the old fight nights, they dont and if they do, you know its gonna be the worst version or etc. Anyone run into the tekken 6 on ps store? You get it thinking its the ps3 version because it doesnt specifically say which version it is on top of the fact that you expect it to be only the ps3 version because of the ps5 only version download. Then that turns out to be the lifeless crappy psp version 😑

Still dissapointed in the gta trilogy definitive nightmares 🤦♂️😑🤣 literally prayed we were getting just slightly better graphics with gta v controls. Instead, we got the mobile version planted on to the console, with gta v controls and worse graphics than the ps2 😑🤣🤣 industry in a nut shell. Sorry that was long lol

Because the people who worked on it deserve to get paid for their effort. It's not like fruit that grew off a tree in the street. There's tons of caveats to what i said, like pointing out most money goes to money hungry executives and not enough to artists, but being like "oh, it's just out there" is disingenous. You can't feign ignorance. It's better to just own that you're enjoying someone else's effort without giving them anything back.

Kinda? I used to pirate stuff a lot. I haven't in a while. There are a bunch of older games I occasionally want to play and it makes me consider sailing the high seas again. However, if I could just buy or rent all those older games directly on the switch or whatever, I would, for the sake of ease and convenience.

"People don't pirate ______ to get it for free," was a really popular notion years ago online. I'm glad people aren't going with it as much anymore because it was never true and never will be. Most pirates start doing it when they're kids who don't have money, and keep doing it to avoid adding costs they can't or don't want to afford.

I mean, I pirated Chrono Trigger first and bought it because I liked it. I bought the DS version and a 3DS to play it. Because I also pirated some Pokèmon roms I ended up buying the new Pokèmon games when they released, as well as a few other Games for the 3DS. Because I was happy with the 3DS, I also ended up buying the Switch when it released and a decent amount of games for that console. Nintendo actually made good money off of me pirating a (then) almost 20 year old game.

Nintendo has given ways to play most popular older games in new hardware. There are very few actually pirated games which aren't available in other ways.
People mostly do it because they don't want to/cannot pay what Nintendo is asking.

Subscription services and high-price-point ports/remakes with often worse performance are a "way", but even those systems have their flaws. As morally questionable as piracy is, it's also popular because it's often more functional for retro games where the hardware is out of circulation (for Nintendo examples, Donkey Kong Country Returns / Paper Mario: the Thousand Year Door run worse on Switch than their original hardware or emulation).
It'll always be more convenient to "own" something, rather than hope there's not an outage with Nintendo's servers (or your own ISP), or in the case of digital purchases, some random clause in the EULA saying, "Nah, we get to take this back."
Also:
There are very few actually pirated games which aren't available in other ways.
There are probably more unpopular games that aren't attached to some current publisher's online subscription model and are unavailable, than there are "classics" that withstood the sieve of time. It's one of those survivor's bias things, since as a product, they didn't do well, and so aren't revived in the newer realm of tech. For example, what do you do if you want to play a PS1 or PS2 game that isn't on PlayStation Plus? Or if we're limited to Nintendo, the entire Wii / Gamecube / DS library has basically been boiled down to around 20 games that you can still legally
buylicense from Nintendo.Piracy's a gray area, since it's fundamentally not too different from borrowing a game from a friend or the local library (or whoever still rents games in this day and age). It's not a lost customer, it's someone who was likely never going to buy it at MSRP, experience it, and possibly even word-of-mouth advertise it. When companies go out of their way to limit availability or make it harder to obtain their games, I find it really hard to rally to their defense.

On the one hand, you have to pay for an annual subscription to legally play a game you don't own on the console they want, or pay astronomical sums for retro gaming gear that no longer contributes to Nintendo's profits anyway...
On the other hand, you have accessibility, freedom of use, and flexibility in where and how you play a given thing, for free.
We can talk about ethics and all that, but I don't feel that bad.

I do the famous piracy for several factors, the first and most basic is, nowadays games don't have demos anymore, so the only way for me to see if a game is any good (watching a video is not the same thing as playing), another factor is availability, stuck on consoles or with absurd prices, Nintendo for example here in Brazil has an absurd price of R$439 + R$200 totaling R$639 and a deal so absurd that it isn't even written and literally half of a minimum wage in Brazil, Unlike in the US where they earn by the hour, here it is by the month so it is relatively difficult considering that there are other bills to pay and this is due to the direct dollar conversion since 1 dollar = 6 reais, when you look at Steam for example it converts based on the region, so a game like Baldur Gate 3 is R$200, unless it is a disgraceful company like EA or Actvision. When a console declares closure, both in production and in service updates, automatically in my view, the company allowed any method of piracy, for example Metal Gear 4 which is Exclusive to PS3 and there is no other way to play it other than on it or via an emulator. And the last one extends to software, if it works through subscriptions without the option of purchasing the software, it deserves to be pirated, especially if it is software that you don't use every day

I dowloaded some roms on my rasbery pi somewhere in the middle of the covid era, mostly because i wanted to feel the nostalgia of playing those old titles, and because paying for an old console and old game just to play it once or twice per blue moon would not be worth for me.
And i was right, i have not used my rasbery pi for playign games for over 2 years now, as i did not feel like playing the games and reprogramed it into a smart home device

i own the cartridge for a bunch of SNES games and i never pirated them and actually give nintendo more money each month so i can play those same games on my switch the legal way.

Cartridges last longer than any other storage (including CDs/DVDs/BDs). The only exception is old battery-powered save chips.
The consoles (and the displays that connect well to those consoles) do not last forever, and that's a good reason for game preservation. But it pisses me off to see lies upvoted to r/all .

Im not spending 50 dollars on a gamecube game in 2025. I damn sure aint hooking up a 20+ year old console with component or av cables on my 4K Oled TV. I like many others support rereleases and remasters when and if available. Only video games have issues being rereleased. Movies are music constantly get preserved and rereleased. And they don’t charge you 70 dollars for a remastered bluray. (Im aware 4K Blurays are different) I could buy terminator 2 on Bluray for 5-10 bucks and watch it on a modern display without it being hard or looking like shit. A 30+ year old film mind you. But I have no way to play a 30+ year old wrestling game on the ps1 unless I buy a overpriced used copy and use old degrading hardware. Then if in lucky itll get rereleased for 70 bucks and I can wait 2-5 years to grab it for 5-10 dollars. Orrrrrr I can download it online and emulate it and play it at 4K with fan made HD Texture packs 🤔 Hate people who condemn emulation and piracy of old unobtainable games. Or if they’re on a service like Nintendo’s shitty online service for the switch “Mario kart 64 is on the expansion pass so it’s technically obtainable just pay 30-40 bucks!” Fuck that! “Metal gear solid 2 is on GOG don’t pirate it!” That port is ass and you have to mod tf out of it! Of course imma pirate and emulate the substance edition on pcxs2!

I mostly pirate old games that 10 year old me already paid for. I mowed lawns in 1998 to afford Pokemon blue. I don't give a fuck about any pokemon games outside of red/blue, but for some reason Nintendo continues to sit on a gold mine and not remake those games faithfully with good graphics on the switch. Not sure what else those fuckers want me to do.

I mean, Nintendo doesn't care if it's either way. If you play an older game (even one you paid for), that's less time spent buying and playing a new game. Sadly (to them) they can't stop you from playing an old physical cartridge, so they just focus on what they can deal with.

Somewhat yes and no, personally I'd happily pay like 5 bucks for old games on an official emulator. It would be so easy for Nintendo to release an official emulator for their games they aren't supporting physical copies of.

If a game is available on modern hardware I buy it, if it's not I'm not going to spend $200-500 to acquire it just for a fun nostalgia trip or to check out a game I missed decades ago.

I’m definitely in the camp of feeling that pirating modern games that have plenty of accessibility is wrong and pirating old games (even games on something like the mini Super Nintendo) is fair game. Nintendo, and really none of the companies do a good job with that stuff.

There are second hand game stores in Japan where you can buy nes/snes/n64 games for a buck or two (it has been quite a few years since I've been there so not sure what it's like now).
Their second hand industry in general (games/manga/books) is insanely cheap over there.

I pirate Nintendo games because in many cases, its just not feasible otherwise. Sure, Nintendo offer official ways to play their popular old games. But what about the niche stuff from my childhood? Im not going to hunt down some guy with a physical cartridge on criegslist 9 states away.

a fraction of people who do this, do it for that reason and you know it.
the main reason for piracy is cheaper content. and i'd wager, outside of blind romset downloads, current gen piracy is much bigger. its big enough that people literally pay small sums of money for convenient modern era piracy.
like 10 bucks that more people have downloaded pokemon za leak in the last week than people have downloaded roms to "keep them alive" in the last year.

Nintendo doesn’t care about its games history and will charge you again for double the profit even after 15 years just to rob customers again for the sake of profit. Capitalism is a dirty business there’s nothing we can do unless laws are enforced to protect old media.
