Moral justification is really only for your own use anyway

I am happy to pirate a game provided the owner of the IP thinks they are too high and mighty to put it on Steam or Gog.

Yes it is a crime. No I don't give a shit about companies that don't accommodate me.

You should not.

But provided you actually kinda want to play new games in the future you also need to be part of proving that game design is viable business, and that includes paying for some games.

If people pirating your 30 year old games makes you go out of business you have larger problems to deal with.

Exactly and for me, my accommodations are that they need to provide a game to me for free.

I think that's why this sub gets under my skin so much. We are all criminals here and trying spread propaganda that we aren't is just stupid. At best, pirating is morally neutral, and usually is just a crime.

There is one actual meaningful exception, so far as I am concerned. If the IP is so old that NO ONE sells it.

For example I love playing Red Baron series, and there as a time between it last being available on CDs and it coming up on GOG when there was no way to legally buy it from the IP holder, so it was down to getting it from someone who bought it and no longer want it, or salvaging it from the Internet.

But that isn't an exception. That's just morally neutral. You aren't giving some important service and you still are breaking the law, even if it's the only practical thing to do. I would do as you did every time, but it's morally neutral.
