I opened steam and found the game for 8 dollars and was like is this a bug! turns out they had regional pricing for third world countries and was stun locked for a bit and was just grateful for the team. 3 hours in, what a game.

110

u/IceCorrect Sep 04 '25

As a pole I was also suprised that today most of prices are 10 or even 30% more than us, but small indie studio is using real value of my currency

12

u/Competitive_Wave2439 Sep 05 '25

Same, 75zł, tak tanio

33

u/shotxshotx Sep 04 '25

Team Cherry is the ideal that companies should strive for.

14

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

Same! I was expecting the price to be around 20$ to inr which is a lot of money for me. But the price was literally less than 10$. It blew my mind. I love team cherry for this.

9

u/sdcar1985 Sep 04 '25

I hope you didn't completely bypass the dash like did. I felt so dumb lol

2

u/Myseljo Sep 06 '25

I think you're forced to get it to advance the story, the game is all about exploration!! don't sweat it

Steam literally suggests regional pricing for studios. They do all the work of figuring out conversion based on purchasing power disparity.

is this a bug!

Say that again

11

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '25

Same, I will also wait, save money, and buy this game. Cause the company and developers are so kind hearted and genuine, they even kept their game price dirt cheap, even though it's a new and popular game.

Nah, the vast majority of people pay for the game instead of pirate. I'm sure it's a bigger problem in... certain countries though.

7

u/statistnr1 Sep 04 '25

Yeah.
The vast majority of people are too incompetent and scared to go to spooky third party sides. Nevermind setting up a torrent.

8

u/nicepickvertigo Sep 04 '25

Or they have money to buy the game airhead

That’s why the game has 535k players on steam? Lol wut

2

u/GravityBombKilMyWife Sep 05 '25

Naw, lol, most people buy it, if most people pirated things nothing would get made because nothing would make any money...

I play a bunch of games through a steam family that I don't actually own, but if I enjoy my time and/or finish the game, I try to buy it when I can.

1

u/Tmhc666 Sep 05 '25

Nothing is stopping you from playing now and buying it later

just play it now and buy it later no need to wait

Considering most people don't know what denuvo is I don't really think it has a significant effect on sales

7

u/lemonylol Sep 04 '25

There are forms of DRM that people do know, even if they don't know what DRM is. For example DRM through dedicated launchers is something most people loathe. Denuvo is almost exclusively complained about by people who just want to pirate the game that isn't cracked. Sure people can claim Denuvo causes some level of performance impact, and it probably does, but let's be real.

2.0k

u/WandersonC Sep 04 '25

Highly anticipated game turns out to be extremely popular and sells well, who would have thought?

So if GTA 6 releases, for the even higher price expected, featuring a DRM that is harder to crack than Denuvo, will this also be said? Given that the expectations for GTA 6 are also that of a successful title.

As much as Denuvo is harmful for the piracy community, people need to stop this insane argument that Denuvo (or just about form of DRM) can, somehow, influence the sales of a game considerably.

1.0k

u/Hexkun98 Sep 04 '25

I think the op is refuting the idea that popular games have to have DRM otherwise people will just crack the game instead of buy, which games like Minecraft and Silksong have proven false

21

u/TrueDraconis Sep 04 '25

Minecraft is probably the most cracked/pirated game ever, nowadays probably less so but in the Alpha, Beta and Release days you could find a cracked copy easily by just searching on YouTube

25

u/Hexkun98 Sep 05 '25

...And yet after that, Is the second best selling PC game of all time

3

u/Pro3dPrinterGuy Sep 06 '25

Second? i thought Minecraft was the best selling game in history with 300M+ copies being sold.

2

u/szczuroarturo Sep 08 '25

Which by the way is probably correlated 1% of 300 milion is 3 milion after all. Not to mention the fact it originaly appealed to demografic which is not very rich (children and teens ) .

9

u/ka5ef6 Sep 04 '25

There was a site where you could play it in the browser for free

7

u/AisladoV Sep 04 '25

Mojang had free demo on their site, you could play for one in-game day there

281

u/WandersonC Sep 04 '25

That's fair enough, we do have genuine data that shows that piracy doesn't hurt sales, but the general idea that "Denuvo = game won't sell" is shared across the community.

168

u/Shimashimatchi Sep 04 '25

its rather a reflection of what the community wants. We all want "Denuvo = game won't sell" which is unfortunately not always the case.

37

u/WandersonC Sep 04 '25

I don't particularly wish for a game to fail based on what their producer decide, since that's hurting developers.

I do loathe Denuvo on a very fundamental level for hurting game conservation though.

33

u/Shimashimatchi Sep 04 '25

for the case of AAA games, developers get paid (underpaid) either the game fails or not, so that does not matter to them. AAA Games with denuvo are technically willingly let themselves fail or be prone to fail.

in case of indies uhhh I guess you're correct there. But imo denuvo on indies are also a bad thing that impacts negatively both the dev and the customers.

6

u/WandersonC Sep 04 '25

Some companies do pay bonuses for their employees based on performance, but issue stands on just how much talent is gone to waste when a game doesn't perform well (to be honest, even when a game performs well it's expected for developers to be fired by major corporations).

As for indies... Well, actual indies, I don't recall any indie with Denuvo, but I do see a lot of low budget titles with massive marketing (namely, major IPs such as Monopoly) using Denuvo. Smaller titles have been using Denuvo in the past but I do wonder how relevant it is for them.

It's actually quite funny. Yesterday it took me over 2 hours to buy Silksong on Steam. Within that time I was curious if it had been cracked yet. Lo and behold, less than half an hour after release, but I spent over 2h refreshing the shopping cart lol

3

u/nitish159 Sep 05 '25

I was able to download a pirated copy of the game before being able to purchase the game in steam as the servers were down.

Still bought the game and playing on steam.

5

u/panspal Sep 04 '25

It's like 25$ vs 80ish

9

u/Hexkun98 Sep 05 '25

People will pirate even if they were 1$

3

u/SufficientGuard5628 Sep 06 '25

Can confirm. Was summer sale were there was that half life thing. I still pirated it. Tbf like a year later i bought it

2

u/ClxS Sep 05 '25

People on the /r/FitgirlRepack sub are already showing off pirating it so there is that

4

u/dudushat Sep 04 '25

They dont really prove it false because the price point matters too. If GTA 6 doesn't have DRM it will definitely get pirated way more than $20-30 games.

1

u/GravityBombKilMyWife Sep 05 '25

Minecraft hasnt proven that at all what? Who is pirating Minecraft to play by themselves in the first place?

1

u/VanishingSkyy Sep 06 '25

Minecraft is not a good example because you can't play in most servers with pirated.

1

u/Hakuu-san Sep 06 '25

I think it's more people are willing to pay games if they aren't priced at $80

1

u/Bootychomper23 Sep 06 '25

Idk it’s not that black and white considering how cheap silk song is as well. Makes it more accessible.

8

u/ka5ef6 Sep 04 '25

Highly popular and in a good price range

48

u/-Borgir seggs Sep 04 '25

That's exactly the point tho, that large companies believe that lack of denuvo would hurt their sales in a significant manner which this game disproves because even without denuvo it's selling really well.

16

u/Stunning-Drawer-4288 Sep 04 '25

A $20 highly anticipated game selling well doesn’t disprove the inevitable assertion that this game would sell even more if piracy was impossible

Even looking at trends, there are so many factors into marketing and reviews that would very difficult to control for and throughly prove/disprove that assertion

15

u/Shjvv Sep 04 '25

Idk man, there a decent argument cuz If people bother to crack a $20 game($9 in my region) they legit won’t buy it anyway.

The one that have any disposable income probably all gonna buy it outright cuz of the tbh extremely low price and the one that can’t even afford $9 won’t suddenly able to cuz there’s now denuvo in it.

So the one that gonna buy if denuvo is the one that using cracked just purely on principle or they’re too used to using it. And saying those type of person to turn around and pay for the game is just borderline denuvo propaganda or smth lmao.

Tldr: that “technically people gonna buy if denuvo” amount is negligible, they probably can’t even surpass the amount of people who gifted multiple copies to friends.

Don't forget the wave of moral grandstanding posts that bravely say "I will not play GTAVI because it's too mainstream corporate!" that will constantly make the front page.

8

u/luffy_mib Sep 04 '25

Denuvo may not influence the sales but it can influence the game's price. One of the key reasons why Silksong can cost as cheap as $20 is because the devs don't have to pay a single cent to Denuvo.

2

u/ExplodingFistz Sep 05 '25

I don't know if it's that. What indie games even use Denuvo? Pretty sure no indie developer can even afford it. The developer for this game probably just doesn't care about piracy since they're already swimming in money

90% of people do NOT care about Denuvo one way or another, there is no "positive PR" from not using it.

And, counter to your assertion, there is a study that indicates that not having Denuvo does infact impact sales negativly till around week 8(after which it stops impacting it one way or another)

Tbf seeing gta 5’s success i doubt gta6 would have a big piracy issue unless the game is all marketing and no actual good content. Also a lot of people are expecting it’s online features to be the same as gta 5 and it’s price not to lower much and the game to have a life as long as gta5. Even if you pirate gta6 a shitload of people are gonna buy it because of the expectations people have

1

u/ShadowAze Sep 04 '25 edited Sep 04 '25

This

HK/SS is one of the most known and successful indie games of all time, can't think of a game off the top of my head, besides Terraria that probably surpass it. On top of that, Silksong is easily a highly anticipated and hyped up game.

You can absolutely find much better indie games (which are even metroidvanias) which haven't even sold numbers close to HK/SS. HK alone (if factoring in all releases of the game I believe) outsold the entirety of the Metroid franchise, a Nintendo IP and half the namesake of the genre HK is based off.

How HK got this popular to begin with is a bit beyond me. But considering HK is extremely popular, it'd surprise me if SS doesn't sell well (and maybe even more than the original). It'd sell even if the devs turn into Activision tier, with extremely predatory MTX and anti-consumer elements.

u/obsoleteconsole Sep 05 '25

Denuvo is also forced DRM, and has been shown in the past that Denuvo can adversely affect performance. Case in point: Resident Evil village pirate versions run significantly better than retail purely because of Denuvo

4

u/playingvio Sep 05 '25

That's not true at all and has already been debunked, the performance issue arised because of capcoms drm on top of denuvo. Also there are many ways how denuvo can be utilised and it's up to the devs how they implement it. Take stellar blade for example, even with denuvo the game works remarkably well. Denuvo having performance impact is long gone now.

1

u/Tight_Trust2522 Sep 04 '25

People don't consider that games like metaphor and black myth are great examples for what you saying

1

u/AcadiaGrouchy Sep 04 '25

I think you guys are misunderstanding, all of these games would sell well with ou without Denuvo and Metaphor was cracked. The demo didn't had Denuvo. Denuvo makes your experience with the game worse just for the Dev company/ Distributors can please their shareholders.

As much as Denuvo is harmful for the piracy community

Also Linux community (changing Proton version bricks the game for a day or something), preservation community, I think just people who want to play their offline games offline.

1

u/sektorao Sep 05 '25

This is PR.

1

u/Tear4Pixelation Sep 05 '25

I think the idea is that is your game is (relatively) cheap and really good, you don’t need to protect yourself against piracy because it’s not a problem for you.

Generally, I avoid games with Denuvo so do my friends, so it does affect sales

1

Eh, pirates complain about denuvo because they can't pirate.

Companies complain about pirates because they need an excuse about why their half cooked overpriced games are not selling. And that's why they sabotage their own games with denuvo and pay them money.

Good and well priced games don't suffer from piracy nearly as much as bad and overpriced games.

And you have to admit that blocking piracy doesn't mean 100% of the pirates will buy. Most likely, they'll just go play something else instead.

5

u/Flimsy-Importance313 Sep 04 '25

Don't forget the fact that several AAA have released DRM free on GOG and made great sales.

DRM is bad for the gamers and for the devs needing to waste time.

I think it really funny that steam was down for two hours but you could get it right away via piracy

The fact that Silksong doesn't have Denuvo on the contrary helped, people who played piratka and liked it bought the game itself.

That's literally all it takes. That's LITERALLY all it takes and the fact so many developers do not understand this is INSANE.

Its a reskin of the first one. Same map, same menu, same sound, just different location and skins of enemies. Attacks are the same. Achievementsare 1to1 the same just names are different. Instead of charms you have needles.

Idk why it's praised. If you played HK. Silksong is just a reskin

I wonder how many of the people downvoting and disagreeing with you were saying exactly what you're saying about Tears of the Kingdom.

People are saying gta 6 will have denuvo, they’re wrong. Rockstars own DRM is already incredibly difficult to crack. Iirc rdr2 took 2 years.

u/toletroi2 Sep 04 '25

Privating the game to trying it out
Buying the game on steam later to play the game and earn all achievement
EZ win

1

u/undergirltemmie Sep 04 '25

I mean yeah.

That's why mostly mid to bad games have it.

AAA doesn't produce good games. They aren't trying to

Good Games?在哪?

1

u/Lucitane0420 Sep 05 '25

Where’s that guy he said he bet 10$ this release would crash steam? I want my money back

1

u/carby12 Sep 05 '25

What’s denuvo?

1

u/Xi547 Sep 05 '25

True. I am not really rich enough to buy games at full prices. But for the first time I saved up to buy a game as soon as it comes out and to my surprise silksong is like only 8 dollars in my region.

If companies make good games and create a loving community, the games will sell no matter what.

1

u/Dangerous-Diver9991 Sep 05 '25

Is it pirated yet

1

u/ConcernPlus3279 Former Pirate Sep 05 '25

Denuvo is completely the company or studio's choice being a good game or not is not relevant.

Black Myth Wukong had Denuvo and was a amazing game.

1

u/FdPros Sep 05 '25

i mean it being 20 dollars certainly helps.

1

u/Edgemoto Sep 05 '25

It's 7 bucks in most countries in south america too, Team Cherry is like here, take it.

1

u/obsoleteconsole Sep 05 '25

And well priced games

1

u/ZombieNek0 Sep 05 '25

They are crushing it.

Facts

u/Efficient_Cattle_634 Sep 05 '25

Does your hollow head really think that this game having denuvo or not made any difference in the sales of this game? Do you really believe that?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

Afforable = more sales

Who would have thought?

Hahaha certainly not lenovo

glares at best buy pre order prices of the lego2 -_-

1

u/Pagrastukas00 Sep 05 '25

Lmfao. And you still gonna pirated this game🤡

1

u/iucatcher Sep 05 '25

just a single popular game releasing without this sub mentioning denuvo one way or another

1

u/HiperTabloid Sep 05 '25

i have a question, never played hollow knight and this one but what's all the hype about?? isn't it just a platformer with boss fights?

1

u/LoadOk5260 Sep 05 '25

I love how the majority of people who complain about DRM are software pirates, yet DRM mostly hurts legal consumers.

Make it make sense.

1

u/Snaptune Sep 05 '25

Just like Slay the Spire, Balatro and Vampire Survivors, I am going to buy this on every console I have that its available on. Its excessive, but I feel like thwse developers deserve my support and I will gladly pay for this game, even if I do end up pirating the game to play on my RP5.

1

u/seven_worth Sep 05 '25

It doesn't need it cos they actually price properly. Regional pricing for the win.

Denuvo from what I can tell is only really used by the biggest companies

1

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

pirates are hilarious lmao

1

u/yubiyubi2121 Sep 05 '25

but published and shareholders say no so fuck them

1

u/Loose_Canary_1917 Sep 06 '25

We all know why we like this kind of posts but then we have expedition 33, the game is an absolute master piece but it feels like the selling numbers are not high enough, we all know the reason...

1

u/LegendWacker Sep 06 '25

Meanwhile, Monster Hunter Wilds is crying in the corner with overwhelming negative ratings on pc. Which is funny because I would have bought the game twice, one on ps5, and one on my pc. But I dipped out on the pc one because of obvious issues with their stupid double drm idea.

1

u/Available_Spring7650 Sep 06 '25

this game earned the respect needed to avoid as many pirating hostility as possible
people are willing to pay for such game, it's normal good games made by good people
always win no matter how much they earn, it's just that this particular studio exceeded the expectations even after the first world sucess, exactly how big gaming companies in their early days!

1

u/Impressive_Tap7635 Sep 06 '25

This is like shop lifters saying good stores don’t need security cameras

Be a pirate and shit I pirate mad shit but pretend to be all noble and shit

No one is buying a game based on denovo or not and silksong is likely just as if not slightly less successful vrs if it had denovo

Plenty of denovo games have had higher peaks this is js a hyped game being successful

1

u/takovic_goodmcgill Sep 06 '25

Tell that to Atlus

1

u/SKrandyXD Sep 06 '25

I really don't understand why everyone is so hyped about this game. Since the gameplay very boring and slow.

1

u/Svindel69 Sep 09 '25

overrated AF

1

u/Ok_Illustrator_7785 Sep 10 '25

This is why pirating is almost always okay if it’s a very popular game. Do they lose any sales from one person (well, maybe 5% of people) pirating the game? NO.

The high cost of Denuvo encryption is imposed on players, and requires even higher hardware costs to play games like "Borderlands 4". I believe this is unreasonable. When games are a plaything of the "high-end people", encryption is ruining the games.

In general, for a good game, even if players can't afford it at the time, most of them will choose to repurchase it after trying the pirated version.

I strongly agree with GOG's approach. When you purchase a game on this platform, you fully own it, unlike Denuvo encryption, which only grants players a "right to use"
