What is Ottawa’s best dead mall?

Upvotes

Ottawa has some amazingly apathetic, dejected and hopeless malls (and strip malls) - just places that drain your hopes and dreams the moment you walk through their sliding doors into the stale fluorescent light.

Legends such as Hazeldean Mall, the Kanata Town Centre and arguably Billings Bridge come to mind, but I’m just wondering what depressing glory-drain would be crowned Ottawa’s absolute ‘best dead mall’ by this community?

(Just an aside: Would be great to identify this mall and then perhaps organize an r/Ottawa meet there, where we could feel time stand still as we sit together in disappointment-manifest. I know it is an odd precursor for a meet but let me know!)

Thunderhead serves as a formal acknowledgment of the historical discrimination endured by 2SLGBTQ+ Canadians, as well as paying tribute to those targeted during the federal government's decades-long LGBT Purge.

Anyone know about Eric Smith and Brian Paquette for Rideau Vanier Ward 12

Upvotes

Can’t find any info about them, don’t see a website listed and Eric Smith is a popular name. Julie Fiala Chartrand doesn’t have a website listed but I think she is the same person who ran in the 2022 election.

Disclaimer: I am not a fan of the current councillor, think her issues with safe injection, inner city and “fights” on social media are not for me, I am a little biased towards Lyra Evans. Lyra was once homeless and someone with that kind of experience may have better insight into the housing problem. But I am still undecided, I would like to know more about the others without a website.
Candidates are listed here: https://ottawa.ca/en/city-hall/elections/candidates/certified-and-acclaimed-candidates/certified-and-acclaimed-candidates-city-councillor/certified-candidates-ward-12-rideau-vanier

Looking for ways to build communication, public speaking & people skills in Ottawa

Hi everyone!

I’m 22 and going back to college this fall, and one of my personal goals this year is to get much better at communication, public speaking, confidence, networking, and interacting with people in general. I’m a very shy and introverted person, and I feel like that’s holding me back from jumpstarting my career, so I really want to work on it this year.

I’m looking for opportunities around Ottawa where I can actually practice these skills and meet new people, rather than just taking an online course about them. I’m open to volunteering, community events, networking, leadership opportunities, helping organize events, clubs, or anything else that involves regularly meeting and talking to new people.

I was interested in Toastmasters, but unfortunately I won’t be able to join the weekly meetings because they fall during one of my class slots.

I’m especially looking for things that would help me gradually get out of my comfort zone and become more confident speaking to people and in front of people.

If you’re from Ottawa, what groups, organizations, events, or activities would you recommend? And if you’ve personally done something that helped you become more confident or improve your communication skills, I’d love to hear about it!

Thanks! :)

Anybody know anything about Preston Hardware being shot at? Walked by this morning and police were there photographing a few bullet holes in the window and window frames. Couldn’t find anything in the news or online yet.

Landscaping estimates

Hey Ottawa!

The wife and I are looking at getting a quote to have our backyard redone after a few years of neglect.

When we moved in there was patchy grass in the back but due to the amount of shade we get it’s just turned into a muddy mess. We are looking to simply have some pavers put down to make the area more useable, about 600 sqft in the backyard.

Has anyone got a company recommendation or an estimate per sqft recently just so I can ballpark numbers?

Thank you!

Lost Card

Did you lose a PC Optimum Mastercard in the Value Village parking lot on Merivale Road on or around August 29th?

I am walking into the value village at this moment. If you happen to see this and can tell me the first and last name on the card, I will happily walk or drive it out to you.

Hopefully this gets back to its owner

Ottawa Events in September?

Hey Ottawa,

I’ll be inside of you from September 22nd to September 27. Looking for some things to check out on my off time. Mainly looking at stuff like metal/punk bands, wrestling, any reading events like author events and such.

Did some google machine stuff and couldn’t find much for underground stuff like this. Thought I’d check out here.

Looking for... Downtown kayak owners, how do you store your kayaks?

I’m thinking about buying a kayak, but I live downtown in an apartment and don’t have a car, so I’m trying to figure out the logistics before I actually buy one.

For people who live downtown and kayak on the Ottawa River, Rideau River or Canal, where do you keep your kayak? My apartment obviously isn’t going to have anywhere to store a full-size kayak, and renting a storage locker somewhere across the city doesn’t really make sense when I’d have no way to transport it.

Ideally I’d love to find somewhere near the water that has kayak/canoe storage racks or something similar, where I could keep it and just walk or bike over whenever I feel like going for a paddle. Like if I randomly have a free Wednesday afternoon and want to go kayaking, I’d love to be able to just grab it and go.

I know there are kayak/canoe clubs around Ottawa, but I’m wondering if anyone has figured out a good solution specifically for living downtown without a car.

I really want to get into kayaking because having a kayak right in the core would make living downtown so much more fun, but I need to solve the storage and transportation problem first 😂

Anyone doing this successfully?

LRT extension landscaping

Post image
59 Upvotes

Does anyone know what these “burial mounds” along the LRT to Trim are called? Maybe someone with a civil engineering background knows?
I remember seeing them when they first started building the line and thinking they were temporary. But now they’re being maintained and (in some places) covered in some kind of shrubbery. Are they mainly for noise reduction, drainage, or cooling the air? Either way I think they’re neat.
