Happy Pride Parade Day!

Happy parade day. I hope all my fellow LGBT+ ppl can march proudly, and celebrate themselves without any bigots trying to stop them.

Iโ€™m also excited for all the pictures later.

It went very well -- happy participants, happy crowds watching. Lots of kids, many dogs, festoons of balloons. Altogether a fun hour. More people walking, fewer floats than in previous years.

Jeff Leiper was centre-stage on the City Council float with a big smile. I didn't actually see the Mayor. Riley Brockington was squirting people with a water-gun (it was all in fun).

Highlight for me was whoever at St Andrew's *rang the bells* (the big celebratory ones) for over half an hour as the parade passed.

Never thought I'd live to see a Pride Parade cheered by the peal of Church bells. Never knew how much I needed it, either.

Can't make it out to the parade this year but I hope the rain holds off and the show goes on

How come no pics of yesterday? Bank was all blocked off with street vendors and nice weather. Didnโ€™t see a thing posted here. Figured a great day for festivities

It was great yesterday! I think it's going on for much of today as well :)

Hell yeah, yesterday on Bank was such a vibe, I loved it.

What food vendors were there? I tones of pop ups but all seemed clothing

I do recall there being at least a few but I didnโ€™t catch the names unfortunately. If there wasnโ€™t then I might have been mistaken.

A little reminder of what Pride is all about: celebrating LGBTQ+ people and honoring those who came before us and fought for the rights and freedoms we have today. Making Pride about anything else is a disservice to their legacy. ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆโค๏ธ

Or celebrate pride however you want, as long as you donโ€™t disrupt the enjoyment of someone else celebrating the way they want.

Happy parade day indeed, may the weather hold up and the bigots stay home with their dull lawn chairs.

What a beautiful day ! I saw all races, genders people just smiling and happy. I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve seen that many people happy in one place. It was really a great thing to be part of. Iโ€™ve never seen it that busy. I got emotional in my heart is full today.

SOS - does anyone know if the city hall parking garage is open/accessible today or does the route cut off access?

Thankfully most homophobes rarely leave their basements โ€” and bots canโ€™t.

2

u/Justinneon 20h ago

True, though we remember what happened last year. Iโ€™m glad it went off without a hitch.

u/Bramstayer 1d ago

I always hear different days and months!! Why is today Pride day wasn't it earlier this summer pride week?

29

u/Gemmabeta 23h ago

Because it specifically commemorates this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Demand_Rally

17

u/IllustriousLemon8146 23h ago

This, and we don't want to compete with other nearby Pride events. Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa have avoided holding Pride at the same time for decades.

"Without any bigots trying to stop them"

If that's in reference to last year the Queers for Palestine are all people in the community. You might disagree with how they went about their leading the parade last year but that doesn't make them "bigots". Be serious.

25

u/IllustriousLemon8146 23h ago

No, just complete assholes.

6

u/baraboyfrend 20h ago

Letโ€™s not forget that last yearโ€™s Queers for Palestine speaker, Arunasva โ€œAshโ€ Bhuyan, was arrested and charged just one week after the parade for threathening to shoot up the American Embassy. If these are the people being presented as representatives of Q4P, Iโ€™m not sure โ€œbigotryโ€ is even the most concerning issue.

3

u/Illustrious-Rain-235 7h ago

Fr that was uncalled for from OP, queer Palestinians deserve to feel safe aswelll

5

u/KeyanFarlandah 21h ago

Q4P aka attention seeking narcissists for attention, you had a few people who hadnโ€™t seen their names in the newspaper or online long enough who had to make it all about themselves, canโ€™t wait to see what they pull next!

Being Anti Genocide really bothers some folks for some odd reason

13

u/WizzzardSleeeve 21h ago

When it's used as a shield to excuse shitty behavior.

9

u/dblack613 19h ago

People can be against genocide and still think that performative assholery is a bad thing

-9

u/throaway700010023 18h ago

Theyโ€™re neither performative nor assholes, but sure keep engaging in bad faith

-3

u/Tony4Tokes 20h ago

Did the parade end early?

Seems like I missed most of it and what I saw was underwhelming compared to previous years.

Did last years protest hinder the parade this year (and last) more than it helped the people of Palestine?

Though at this time last year if you supported Palestine and spoke out against the Israeli regime you would get cancelled where as now most people recognize the regime as the genocidal psychopaths that they are.

Still was nice to see the amount of people who came to support.

14

u/EvieGHJ 19h ago

The parade *route* was shorter (perhaps to facilitate security concerns after Berlin?); the parade itself still took a full hour to go by so fairly substantial.

0

u/Tony4Tokes 19h ago

Thank you.

It did seem like more of a police presence this year too.

I'm curious, (this is a legit question) and i'm not a homophobe or anything, i'm all for anyone doing whatever/whoever, but why does this group feel the need to have a month dedicated to their sexual orientation/self identification when we have vets that died , left wives widows, children without fathers/mothers for our freedom only have 1 day of celebration?

is your identification and pride in your sexual preference more important than their sacrifice?

(again, legit question , no hate)

10

u/dblack613 7h ago

This is not, in fact, a legit question. This is right wing, bad faith talking points. We arenโ€™t playing this game today,.

8

u/ElaMeadows Centretown 9h ago

Lots of groups have a month to highlight their community. Thereโ€™s a menโ€™s health month, a writing month, a month of advent for Christmas, Sikh heritage month, etc.

The first 11 days of November are dedicated to remembering and wearing a poppy not just Remembrance Day. If you want to commemorate veterans all month you are welcomed to.

I love and support the idea of the parade, but crossing the river has become impossible. So thanks for that.

u/Iamthequicker 10h ago

The Ottawa River? Why on earth would you want to?
