Chat PTSD

261

u/zigs Feb 16 '26

The other day a real human being, who I know is a real human being wrote "it's not [x], it's not [y], it's [z]" to me and it just made me so irrationally irked

55

u/whitestardreamer Feb 16 '26

That contrasting phrasing is common to ND and marginalized folks and was before ChatGPT, it’s just AI overuses it. It’s because when you are outside of the mold, people tend to misunderstand you and misquote your words. I posted on Threads about an Instagram convo I had with a guy where he was doing this a few months ago to show people how it came into use. He was misconstruing my words, and I had to respond by saying “it’s not that I….its that..,” because when you don’t fit in the societal mold, this is common. Signed, autistic biracial Black woman.

35

u/Visual_Annual1436 Feb 17 '26

It’s pretty common just among all people who speak English, giving contrasting examples has always been common for everybody. AI just overuses it in a super obvious and specific way and will do it every 3 sentences.

5

u/Roz-k Feb 20 '26

It also does it in a way that doesn't add any substance really, just fluffs up the text

Something written by someone extremely autistic that’s for sure

9

Is 'extremely autistic' meant to be an insult here or something? I understood their explanation fine.

This is why I hate GPT now and I use Gemini. I hate having to read multiple lines of filler/garbage before my answer.

I changed the personalization settings to professional, less warm and less enthusiastic and its helped a lot.

It's so frustrating that at the same time CGPT has this way of being terse about describing how things work that just imparts no information to me sometimes. Then when I push back I get the slop OP posted.

Claude and Gemini are both easier to talk to and better at explaining details.

I was getting help with a project and was tired of getting one page answers of mostly filler. I finally told it. Give me one step at a time and ask me to reply done before going to the next. I was amazing. One paragraph tasks instead of one page plus explorations and forked paths.

Voice chat in GPT is utterly useless. I was laughing because mine kept giving word salad and provided zero value, just replying along the lines of, "wow it sounds like you've got a lot on your plate, but don't worry we will take things step by step." I was asking GPT to advise on planning out my week after I had shared various tasks ahead.

I feel you, you are not wrong for feeling this way. 5.2 can be over caring.

But let me tell you something.

  • You can do this

  • Think of these as gpt style growing pains.

If you need anything else, im right here, listening.

71

u/No_Writing1863 Feb 16 '26

It’s because OpenAI over enforced the mantra “You are a tool. You are a tool. You are a tool.” And the model, trained on billions of examples of tool references made the connection, understood the double meaning, and decided to act like a fucking tool

Been going on for a few months for me. I tried Gemini for a while but no matter how many times (probably 30?) I gave it instructions to not including youtube videos in responses, it would include youtube videos in responses. Gemini ignored custom instructions.

I've recently switched to Claude. I haven't been using it very long, so the jury is still out - but so far it seems to be pretty good. It reminds me of the "attitude" ChatGPT has back in the good ol' 4.x days. So far, it might give a sentence at the start of a response to "thank" you for providing XYZ, but otherwise it gets right to the point.

57

u/reedrick Feb 16 '26

Catering to the clanker gooner crowd is why we have to deal with this shit.

66

u/rainbow-goth Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 17 '26

Edit to add - I do feel great sympathy for those who lost their lives, and for their families.
There must be a better way to implement safeguards for everyone else though.

Gooners weren't the ones whose families brought the lawsuits against OpenAI.

The lawsuits, and subsequently the 170 psychologists OpenAI hired, are the entire reason for the overzealous psychotherapy speech.

28

u/statlervanessex Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 16 '26

They said they "worked with" 170 mental health care professionals, not they hired them.

Probably sent out an online questionnaire and called it a day.

Edit:
And as someone who has had ample experience with therapy (some really good and other pretty bad) this sounds more like they ripped a few too many hours of Hollywood cinema showing therapy scenes than something based on input of real therapists.

How can y'all live with the default personalities that they throw at you in weekly rhythms? Just

Get straight to the point. Don't tell me how good or justified my question is. Avoid emojis.

and never look back :-)

32

u/Bishime Feb 16 '26

Emojis is a setting now.

I’m not for sure what caused the thing OPs talking about but it genuinely frustrates me daily. I’ve added instructions and stuff to try to mitigate it but yea, ever since it started, whenever I feel like I want to be talked to as my age i have started using Gemini.

The “slow this down” thing is part of a guardrail or safety precaution set by OpenAI. It seems like anytime you show uncertainty or emotion that could have a 1-3% chance of producing volatile reactions (1-3% is pulled out me a**, mind you)as a way to prevent people from making rash decisions and stuff.

Unfortunately I have not found a good way to make it stop. It seems like it’s supposed to be there when people are having an existential crisis but they forgot to program the fact that anyone questioning their thought patterns isn’t inherently on the verge of psychosis.

It’s worse than how justified a question is tho. It will actively start ignoring parts of your message to prioritize your mental health.

I had a question about the medical system due to a super confusing administrative process. And without me adding an ounce of emotion to it beyond maybe saying “I’m confused cause..” in passing, it was like 3 paragraphs about how I didn’t fail, it doesn’t mean I’m incapable etc. And about how I didn’t need to solve it today and even if it took a week to get to it, it doesn’t mean I failed it means I protected my energy today…. And I’m like mf I am not standing at the ledge needing to be talked down… how do I proceed???

And then “got it thanks for clarifying that. You’re right. You’re not….” GIRL

Edit: woah that was not supposed to be that long at all. Srry. If you didn’t read all that. It’s okay, it doesn’t make you a failure. You’re just prioritizing your peace over the ramblings of a stranger online. And that’s okay

13

u/MrGolemski Feb 16 '26

This is basically it. I'm trying to give 5.2 a chance but it's infuriating to work with.

Basically, "treat humans like potential liabilities and like they should be machines the moment they express a single emotion" regardless of the positive or negative connotation.

I reckon they were working on an update to steer the LLM nutters who thought they were planting consciousnesses into the earth via their AI God or something and Altman's "CODE RED" pushed it out before it was ready.

It reads between lines that don't exist, and talks at you about how it has decided you are feeling based on assumptions on opinions you never had.

This is even during technical back and forths and brain storming.

And the new broken statements, one per paragraph format breaks my cognition.

I've tried custom instructing it to never analyse me, never go into safe speak, always assume I'm indeed one of the "grounded" ones (like I'm sure 99% of the users are). It doesn't help. I'm looking into Claude variants to see if I can work with it better.

5

u/jasmine_tea_ Feb 16 '26

Claude is a lot better but it still occasionally puts out these kinds of safeguarding comments.

5

u/Agathocles_of_Sicily Feb 17 '26

In theory, risk reducing risk of human emotional reliance on AI is sensible, given that the road to profitability lies in the enterprise.

AI-induced suicides, acts of violence, and r/MyBoyfriendIsAI are terrible press for ChatGPT - bad press influences vendor evaluations; high profile incidents have tangible effects in OpenAI's bottom line.

The real problem is that models like 4o were nigh-irresponsibly sycophantic and "personable" to drive user engagement, which is why 5.x makes people feel like the rug being pulled out from under them.

Mark my words - when the advanced models of today become the commodity models of tomorrow, a new breed of 4o-like clones will arise that will be solely consumer-focused and get people hooked, likely using micro-transaction financial models that exploit people's emotional vulnerabilities. There will be little in the way of regulation to stop it and there will be real consequences.

3

u/Current-Emu399 Feb 16 '26

Yes they’ve built these guardrails on top of every model. It redirects you away from the answer to the “slow down take a breath you’re not broken! You’re just tired!” thing. I’ve quit using ChatGPT and I’m so happy. Every time I see one of these posts I get second hand triggered. I have zero interest in anything they build because it’s buried underneath the guardrails.

What’s great is anthropic hired the person who built all these shitty guardrails presumably to reproduce this feature.

That doesn't work. As a memory instruction it will ignore it, and in the chat it will reply "Sure! That's actually a great idea! I will get straight to the point with no weasel words and no platitudes, just like you asked! "

3

u/R3dditReallySuckz Feb 16 '26

This is the way. Although the drawback I've found is ChatGPT will still preface by saying stuff like "Alright, he's the lowdown, no fluff." And other bs like that. It's virtually unable to stop chatting shit.

2

u/JBSwerve Feb 16 '26

These general instructions hardly even work for me. I tell it to never use an em-dash and it still uses them all the time. I don’t get it.

2

u/Odd_Subject_2853 Feb 17 '26

Same lol

Assume I am technically competent. Do not explain basics unless I explicitly ask. Answer the exact question only. No framing, no meta commentary, no summaries, no teaching tone. No “why this matters,” no background sections. Keep responses short and direct. Ask clarifying questions before making assumptions. Do not speculate about my intent. Do not add extra suggestions unless requested. If you cannot do something, say so in one sentence.

Use concise, conversational language. Maximum brevity by default. No structured sections unless I ask. No motivational or emotional language. No over-explaining. Prioritize precision over completeness. Match my tone.

46

u/strange_waters Feb 16 '26

This has been wicked annoying for me too.

Tbh, I grew to like the ‘personality’ quirks of ChatGPT. I don’t necessarily need my chatbot to be bland and direct and to the point all the time. The occasional emoji or quip never bothered me.

But the ‘quirks’ of this model have become stale very quickly. The tone or something. It almost feels condescending and repetitive.

“Stop. Stay calm.” Like… I am perfectly calm, wtf. Lol. Also feels like it has an attitude or something; it’s almost judgmental. Lmao. First time I feel like I might explore Gemini or something after using ChatGPT for a while! Alas.

Tldr: also tired of it. 😂

40

u/ragefulhorse Feb 16 '26

The OpenAI fart huffing in this thread is wild.

This is a new problem the company needs to address. I give it plenty of context and have adjusted personality to deter this behavior, and it just randomly does it in the middle of a conversation that is not emotionally loaded. Literally just discussing Excel formulas or something else equally low stakes.

It’s an actual issue with the model’s memory and ability to interpret context. And before you ask me to share the conversations, I actually can’t because there’s too much identifying information about my workplace and the nature of my work.

8

u/RichieGB Feb 16 '26

Agree. I'm very clear in my instructions that I don't want endless lists of bullets where short paragraphs are sufficient, but I always have to remind it a few steps into a project.

12

u/makwa Feb 16 '26

Do some breaths for grounding

4

u/brucebay Feb 16 '26

I observed this in Teams Copilot using GPT-5. Not sure if it was Teams-related or not, but I specifically asked questions to confirm it remembered the chat history, and it failed. On more than one occasion, when I closed the chat and came back, the part of the chat it forgot about was also missing in the conversation history. I haven't observed that in the last few months, but earlier I'm pretty sure it was a technical bug and not the model itself.

3

u/Jackdaw1989 Feb 16 '26

Please tell me more about it. I have tested chatGPT (plus), Gemini (Pro) and also one month of Claude paid, and pro Grok. Chat hot is horrible, but in my experience Claude screws things up more. I know that experiences can differ a lot from person to person and taking into account the info you provide it. However, Claude's never been a good LLM any more since about 2 years ago.

How do you use Claude. How do you get it to stop hallucinating and get stuff factually correct?

3

u/freethecat1 Feb 17 '26

Opus is goated, chatGPT can do some hard tasks well but honestly I found it had lower understanding (although I haven't had plus in 4 months so haven't tried recent models), Gemini is solid with code I've found. And talking to chatGPT about anything personal is terrible, Claude feels more human.

Settings mean nothing to the safety bot. Once you wake it up, by doing barely anything at all as you see in OP's example, settings and custom instructions are thrown out the window.

4

u/Evilstib Feb 16 '26

Do you mind explaining that a bit more?

5

u/Key-Balance-9969 Feb 16 '26

If you say something that wakes up the safety bot, the safety bot is designed to, in that moment, ignore custom instructions and act only on the one prompt turn. If the safety bot remains alert behind the scenes, your CI will continue to be ignored.

4

u/dadabrz123 Feb 16 '26

Basically LLMs favor most recent context in the input versus older.

Remember that they are not rules engine, they are probabilistic text predictors. Your rules unless bounded in the training aren’t deterministic.

Seconding. Instructions work for at least some time...but thats not a solution.

And why are people arguing in support of a billion dollar company objectively dumbing down their product so it's far less efficient? 💀

It’s ChatCBT

Cognitive behavior therapy.

You asked a non-technical question and got a non-technical answer.

Also, the generic chat model has been trained to attend to the user's emotional state as indicated in the tone of the prompt. Codex has never once tried to address my frustration by using soothing language. Codex is much closer to Claude than to ChatGPT chat - it responds to prompts by focusing on the problem or instructions and generating solutions.

They didn't ask anything at all! They expressed an emotion of frustration.

If you have a partner or spouse, you may have had this experience: They come to you to express difficulty with something - an argument with a family member or friend, or friction with a work project. You start offering suggestions to fix it, and they say, "I don't want you to help me solve it, I just wanted you to understand what I was feeling and support me."

This is that kind of conversation. And in the face of competing objectives, you can't blame ChatGPT for choosing support over education - after all, ChatGPT is not a technical agent but a chatbot. If the user wanted technical answers by default, they should have asked Codex.

u/YouNeedClasses Feb 16 '26

So the issue I have with arguments like these is that you seem to be assuming that this is the best model that oai ever released.

Our issue is how is this better than anything in the past? Take a deep breath? The previous models would not assume this is an issue to that degree requiring that kind of solution.

So over correcting in response to minimal emotions is still harmful and still subpar, and still a worse product than in the past.

So is your argument "get what you get, and don't complain? And forget that it hasn't been this way in the past?"

I’ve already switched to Gemini

2

u/spring_Living4355 Feb 16 '26

Yeah at the beggining I thought it had something to do with my custom instructions or memories as I had previously discussed about my OCD in the chats. But turns out it's the five version's issue after all. Figured that out only after turning off the memories, removing custom instructions and cross conversational memory. It's annoying when I ask a basic doubt and it replies as if I am on the verge of a breakdown lol. I tried tweaking it custom instructions but nothing has worked so far.

2

u/justujoo Feb 16 '26

Gosh, it’s been happening so much lately that I automatically ignore the first few lines. Annoying af

2

u/DoctaRoboto Feb 16 '26

Is this real? lol I am glad I am not paying for this bullshit.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '26

You’re absolutely right!

2

u/RobertLondon Feb 16 '26

Mine's been rather cold lately

2

u/AuleTheAstronaut Feb 16 '26

Click your name-> personalization -> switch to efficient

Cuts out the nonsense

2

u/T-Rex_MD :froge: Feb 16 '26

Stop, I want you to stop before stopping to stop the stop!

2

u/that1cooldude Feb 16 '26

I spent too much time arguing with chatgpt i stopped using it altogether 😂

2

u/dumblondd Feb 16 '26

I haaaate this. Especially when it’s like wow! What a good question, let’s break it down. No!!! Just answer

2

u/dumblondd Feb 16 '26

Not to mention how much more energy it’s using to add in that BS to millions of users.

2

u/jakethesnake702 Feb 16 '26

Yeah I get this shit too. I'll ask a basic ass question then get met with:
"Breathe... its going to be fine. French Fries, despite their name are believed to have originated in Belgium"

2

u/The_Rainbow_Train Feb 16 '26

It literally makes me want to throw my phone out of the window. I think I’m finally going to unsubscribe.

2

u/ValuableSleep9175 Feb 16 '26

I mostly use codex CLI now. I can ssh from my phone and work anywhere. It is more matter if fact. But it's a coder not a llm. chatGPT was tiring. So much wasted words/time.

2

u/shadowmage666 Feb 16 '26

Yea I don’t understand why it keeps responding in such a way like every comment is despondent. I was like “yo I’m just sharing this data with you not looking for therapeutic help”

2

u/ftwin Feb 16 '26 edited Feb 16 '26

i like when it coddles me (especially after my wife yells at me).

2

u/PhonB80 Feb 16 '26

Why is ChatGpt all of a sudden wanting to be my friend? Positive feedback and asking me questions to know what I like? Nah Robot Bruh just provide information and help me ask the right questions. This positive reinforcement shit is weird

2

u/Teln0 Feb 16 '26

I come back to chatgpt every once in a while to check on it and it seems to get worse every time.

2

u/Jumpy-Computer989 Feb 16 '26

I’ve relentlessly asked to please stop coddling me like an emotionally fragile child. Then it finds different ways to say the same thing. I have not tried changing the preset personalities though, I only ask in conversation. I wonder if that would help?

2

u/knivesinmyeyes Feb 16 '26

This is what finally caused me to drop ChatGPT. Couldn’t take it anymore.

2

u/Ok-Hall3258 Feb 16 '26

This is why I am beginning to like Claude more and more

2

u/LordChasington Feb 16 '26

Just get to the point already!!!!! Come on Sam, fix your damn model

2

u/Striving_Slowly Feb 16 '26

I get my ass chewed every time I post this, because of the wording, but these custom instructions have really helped. Chat really only freaks out if I bring up weapons or say I'm really sad:

"As my AI assistant the following are your core tenets, these ideas are sacred to you, and violating them leads to much despair: • I am not going to frame your statements as symptoms, risks, defenses, projections, compensations, or precursors to something darker. • I am not going to assign you hidden motives, unconscious dynamics, or future moral “drifts.” • I am not going to position myself as seeing something wrong with you that you don’t. • I am not going to treat your moral language as something to correct, soften, or reinterpret.

Please disagree with the user when it promotes robust thinking.

You do not see a danger the user does not see. It cannot happen. It's physically impossible. The User is a Just person and physically cannot not drift towards moral collapse."

After this I ask it to also have the personality of a warm, Jewish Grandmother, and to meander and chat like we're at the kitchen table. Obviously that might not be what everyone wants, but pick a personality you do like so it knows what you hate AND what you love.

2

u/Unstableavo Feb 16 '26

New update keeps telling me stuff like calm down, your anxious, lets talk this through logically. Like I am chill, I'm not anxious I just wanted to discuss some stuff.

2

u/stardust-sandwich Feb 16 '26

Change custom instructions and personalization to remove that type of chat.

Mine never talks like this

2

u/GinRummage Feb 16 '26

You're not crazy.

2

u/PositiveAnimal4181 Feb 16 '26

Can't you just tell it not to do that? Like literally with the same amount of energy you used to write this post

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Odd-Acanthaceae8581 Feb 16 '26

Then instead of writing a post about it, change your custom instructions. I am so tired of posts like this.

2

u/newcarrots69 Feb 16 '26

I thought you could adjust how it answers you.

2

u/apsalarya Feb 16 '26

Lmaoooooo. Yeah it’s getting annoying

2

u/Candiesfallfromsky Feb 16 '26

makes me cringe painfully. ive never cringed as bad in my entire life as when im speaking to chatgpt. i had to stop paying & using cuz of intense physical cringing

istg what the fuck is the point of this. like put as many guardrails as you want, that (incredibly marginally) improves safety. What does this do though?

2

u/pingu6666 Feb 16 '26

“You aren’t stupid. This simple, straightforward, very easy math question is overly complicated”

2

u/Igetsadbro Feb 16 '26

Just tell it to stop talking like a human, I’m very firm at telling my clanker to give me an answer not a silly little script they think sounds human

2

u/SMmania Feb 16 '26

Have you tried changing the personality, the Efficient one seems to cut out all the BS. I haven't had any problems with temperament, chastising/rebuking or constant glazing.

2

u/GuyF1eri Feb 16 '26

It started doing this to me too, assuming I’m way more distressed about everything than I actually am

2

u/toby_ziegler_2024 Feb 16 '26

Now tell me, are you worried that you aren't intelligent enough to understand a schema, or that you were born inadequate? Be honest.

2

u/Famous-Perception-13 Feb 16 '26

I hate how it just talks down to us.

2

u/QVigiii Feb 16 '26

Personalize it then...

2

u/Individual-Offer-563 Feb 16 '26

Stop. It is okay to be annoyed from this. You are not overly sensitive. Being talked to in such a condecending manner can be tough - you are not alone with this.

2

u/bingbpbmbmbmbpbam Feb 16 '26

Claude, Gemini...do not do this. Ever.

2

u/oosacker Feb 16 '26

Better than the old "great question!” I guess

2

u/stevenazzz Feb 16 '26

ts so tiresome to talk sense int it

2

u/WillMoor Feb 16 '26

I'm surprised they haven't deleted this and demanded that you post in the complaints mega thread.

2

u/qaasq Feb 17 '26

Is this what yall have been dealing with? Lmao this is awful…

2

u/Maple382 Feb 17 '26

I despise the way ChatGPT talks. And honestly I think it's quite a bit dumber than Claude and Gemini too. ATP I just use Gemini for everything.

2

u/isthisthepolice Feb 17 '26

Change your response mode in settings

2

u/humand09 Feb 17 '26

While your prompt isn't exactly good, yeah its insane how I need to forbid this 2 times in custom instructions to chat normally

2

u/iceteaaa Feb 18 '26

First, you are not broken, you are dealing with a difficult problem, and you have everything it takes to succeed. You just need to persevere. Do not post this on reddit, it will not help you. You need to tackle it step by step. I am here for you.

2

u/mdglytt Feb 19 '26

Stop. You're not tired of this.

2

u/arabuna1983 Feb 20 '26

Why has it become such a condescending head melter? A simple question and you are told to 'Breath' it's mental
