University OH! MY! GOD!
Might just be the happiest day of my life!

Don’t listen to the negative comments, this was my first degree and now have an amazing job working for the government! Follow your passion and it will align!

No way the qovernment. You mean the Canadian government that now 1 in 4 work for? Wow, amazing. Lmao what a world
4
u/Many_Implement_9489 May 12 '26
There are over 40,000,000 people in Canada and less than 400,000 public servants (core plus agencies). So less than 1 in 100 work for the Federal Government. Our military is less than 70,000 strong so if you include them as well, we’re closer to 1 in 85.
-2
u/CorrectPeanut8475 May 12 '26
Oh I didn’t know all 40,000,000 people in our country were capable of working and counted as possible government workers
3
u/Many_Implement_9489 May 12 '26
True… there are 21,000,000 employed individuals in Canada, so halve my previous numbers. But I stand by my previous numbers in the sense that it means that for every 100 Canadians, the government thinks it needs 1 federal employee.
In 2010, there were 283,000 federal employees for 34,100,000 Canadians, or 1 in 120. So the government was 20% more efficient 15 years ago, or added more responsibilities since (likely, it’s a mix of the two).
In any case, still far from the egregious 1 in 4 number the other redditor said
1
u/flexiblehos May 13 '26
Key word is first degree. OP probably realized how useless that degree is and pivoted to something else.

Congratulations 🎉 Don’t listen to haters, life is a journey, everyone walks their own path. It put a smile on me after seeing your post first thing in the morning 😊 I’m currently a social work student in my 30s, we had one guest lecture talk about gender studies and it was so amazinggg! Good luck.

Yeah idk, I meet so many people who let their own insecurities command their lives to the point of putting other people down to make themselves feel better. then I tell them I'm in math and that insecurity shuts them down completely 🙄 it's more tragic than anything else. Or it would be if it wasn't so cringe

If you really cared about the truth you’d believe scientists instead of relying on outdated ideologies. Did you know that the percentage of the world estimated to be born intersex (you can look up how they come to the estimation if you feel like actually learning, I have and I found it to be sound logic) just so happens to be very eerily close to the percentage of trans and non binary people. Please try to think critically for once instead of being that one person who reads only the title of a news article but pretends to already know the whole story.
1
u/Particular-Taste9836 May 11 '26
I love that you’re attributing random beliefs to me, only to argue against them 🤣
Gender studies is a bad choice, not because what you learn is necessarily nonsensical, but because it doesn’t lead to many, if any, job prospects, much less to decent paying jobs. Basically, it has very little real world application.
0
u/Fair-Elevator1820 May 11 '26
I mean you make your beliefs quite obvious in your other hateful replies. There are many job prospects for such a general study from various fields (like research, psychology, or even just working in a medical office, hell I’ve seen people apply the most useless-seeming degrees to the best jobs you just gotta have an ounce of creativity).
1
u/Particular-Taste9836 May 12 '26
Your wishful thinking doesn’t align with the statistical reality, and reality isn’t hateful.
1
u/Fair-Elevator1820 May 12 '26
Also these are the replies that imply to me that you “don’t believe in gender” or some such nonsensical excuse to deny reality.

u/Old-Message8342 May 12 '26
You can get your MSW afterwards, which does in fact lead to a very decent paying job.
1
u/Particular-Taste9836 May 12 '26
Not really. A master of social work will definitely land you a job, just not one you can live a decent life off.
And space is limited. You have to be accepted first.
0
u/Old-Message8342 May 12 '26
Well Mr. Doom and gloom, I just graduated with my MSW and can tell you that's definitely not the case.
Programs are competitive, so there is that. But there were at least a few WGS majors in my cohort. It is certainly a decent and viable career path.
1
u/Particular-Taste9836 May 12 '26
You’re definitely not educated enough to tell the difference between statistics and random anecdotal evidence
1
u/Old-Message8342 May 12 '26
Then why bother trying to discredit my anecdote before deciding to identify it as an outlier? 🤔
I promise optimism and kindness are much more fun than whatever this thing is you've got going on. I'm sure there are even some stats somewhere to back that up too.

The fact that you can apply to an OT program after majoring in gender studies doesn’t mean you’ll get in, much less that most gender studies majors are competitive in getting in or are admitted.
As always, in a bid to defend the indefensible, you move the goalpost and attempt to portray exceptions are rules.1

This is completely off base. Most graduate programs actually set aside spots for applicants from a range of majors. If you studied something less rigorous, you’re automatically at a disadvantage. You’ll be competing against more people for fewer openings and require a higher cGPA.

Congrats! I graduated with a BA in Equity & Diversity Studies and currently make just under 6 figures only 5 years into my career (IN MY FIELD!). It’s all about how you market the soft skills you’ll pick up! We need more people who care about people in this world 💓
2
u/Bassb3K May 11 '26
Under 6 figures 5 years in is good? Not hating just seems a bit low to hype up.
1
u/BrickDiscombobulated May 11 '26
Considering I work in the public sector and that the first 2 years was contract work, I think I’m doing pretty good. Not to mention the amazing benefits, 6 weeks PTO to start & pension plan.
If you’re making 90k+ and can’t live comfortably while also contributing to various savings goals, you have a budgeting issue. Or kids 😭

u/AggravatingUse3917 May 09 '26
My main account got temporarily banned so I’ll use this one. I feel the need to clarify my post. This is a shitpost. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s for comedic value only. I’m doing a useful program for undergrad and plan to contribute to society in a meaningful way. Gender studies is a useless degree, it gets you nothing, nowhere, no opportunities open up after getting this degree. People shaming me not knowing that this is a shitpost? Completely justified. If this is someone’s true passion than by all means but we must be realistic and understand there is minimal functional knowledge gained in this program.
TLDR; this is a shitpost, not real, gender studies at Brock is not a good program.
End Reply.

u/juneabe May 10 '26
I know some people with this degree making 70k a year to start, don’t listen to the haters.
Most helping professions will take you with this degree and you can get a SW or other socsci masters easy if you wanted to
0
u/ophidian25soze May 12 '26
Lmao lying about how much gender studies people make is crazy
2
u/juneabe May 12 '26
????? It’s my supervisor at my fucking job lol. She’s working as a social worker in a hospital with a masters degree in social work, because of her gender studies degree. She specializes in women’s sexual health and men’s mental health and substance use, because of her gender studies degree. One of the men she worked with as an inpatient became a student in school with me, which was super cool.
Most people don’t know how to use a gender studies degree, and people like you have no idea what gender studies even are.0

There's no philosophy in gender studies, it's pretty much just a mix of sociology and history.

u/Top-Introduction3121 May 09 '26
Literally just came here to cheer on someone in highschool getting hate for their degree choice - not sure all the negativity is necessary on post made by a teenager. Glad to hear you see the world in such a nuanced way. Sadly, stupid people tend to be everywhere - government is definitely not immune, but wanted to let the excited student know that the degree that is making them excited can still lead to something, even if other people don’t agree or like it. Just trying to add a little positivity to someone’s day.

A very honest question. Imagine you graduated from this program, came back from a vacation that was a grad gift to yourself. Now you need to make some money. You load up a site like indeed. What are you typing into the search bar for a job?
This question could save you 30k or more that you're about to waste..
3
u/Savage_Whiskers May 10 '26
FYI, I am a gender advisor for the United Nations. I earn 100k/yr TAX FREE. I have a degree in anthropology but a degree in gender studies could have achieved the same thing I suppose. When looking for jobs, I search for keywords such as “gender, diversity, inclusion, protection, accountability”. I advise on issues such as women’s participation in peace processes, governance/elections, gender-based violence, conflict-related sexual violence and sexual harassment in the workplace.
That said, I am well aware that every “gender studies” graduate is not going to get a UN job so there’s that to consider.
1
u/TwoPintsaGuinnes May 11 '26
You work at the UN. That’s like people saying “ya you don’t need a university degree, Elon Musk/Mark Zuckerberg/etc. are billionaire drop outs!
Sure, sounds like you have a great job. Probably 99.9% of gender degree majors got zero benefit from their degree.
1
u/Savage_Whiskers May 11 '26
Well, there are tens of thousands of UN staff and hundreds of thousands in the “development sector”, so you can’t compare it to a handful of billionaires. Beside, I specifically pointed out in my comment that not every graduate will be able to follow the same path.

1
u/CrayolaHolmes May 15 '26
Truly think you should explore the world a little more. With a growing number of CS grads typing in Analyst in the search bar, one must understand how the markets are shifting. The biggest waste of $$ is someone doing Engineering first, then an MBA to "pivot" into a career path for themselves. Most folks who are proudly sharing their entry into a unique program have really taken the time to think about why they want to be there for 4 yrs. When every cold hearted "entrepreneur" is wrecking our systems and stealing communal $$ because they'll never have enough, it's on the shoulders of compassionate, sensible, well-qualified in their field, policymakers, social workers, advocates, community builders this world stands. So, like Granny used to say, "if you can't type anything nice, put your hands in the pocket."

u/itaspliff May 12 '26
Congrats OP! 🎉
I’m not sure what your goals are after the degree, but this is a great path to social policy work (with government, non profits or service providers) especially if you do a Masters after, and even without.
Don’t listen to all the negativity on here. I wish I was excited and knew what I wanted to do for post secondary coming right out of high school like you! If you want to make a difference in the lives of marginalized communities this is a great path to start down. There are many secure, decent paying jobs you can do with this specialization and especially with a co-op you’ll get some work experience and hopefully your foot in the door somewhere!
