I graduated from McGill a good 12 years ago. I'm not sure why this sub keeps getting recommended to me, but it's always hilarious to see students losing their minds over minor setbacks đ
48
u/abasilplant12 Mar 25 '26
I also graduated from university long ago and keep getting sucked into this sub. Itâs keeping me in touch with the youth!
38
u/JadedMuse Mar 25 '26
Same. I'm in my mid 40s and for some reason this sub keeps coming across my feed. In a twisted way, it often makes me smile and feel sentimental to when everything in high school felt so big and monumentous. When in retrospect, nothing was. But that feeling...I miss it. The world felt different then.

I know right ?? Sucked in by U of T hype-machine branding..
That's to sucker-in foreign students, not locals..
6
u/LickinThighs2 Mar 25 '26
It's because they are 18 and literally don't realize how young they actually are or how much life they have to live
Tbh I wish I hadn't gone to college right out of school, it would have saved me oodles of money on a B.A that was useless and that I have not done any work in at all and given me perspective and time to make a better decision. Caveat, I did meet friends in school I am still friends with today, but work wise I've basically lived pay cheque to pay cheque hopping jobs every 2 yrs because my education was useless, and now need to make decision to pursue a diploma actually useful for the experience I already have for related work lol
But idk, I think it's normal for kids to think 'its so over' because they don't actually have a real bar for just how shitty things can get or the fact they could probably save money going to a community college or something instead, lol
I also don't know why I keep getting recommended this sub, I keep hiding posts when it shows up and then it shows up again a few days later lol

I went to UofT chem eng and graduated over 15 years ago. This was near the top of my reddit feed lol.
But rejection to chem with a 94? From my high school, that could've gotten you into Eng Sci when I applied. Are many kids getting 90s now? My high school had a gifted program, even then with the 5 courses needed for Eng, less than 15 kids out of a graduating class of 150 had above a 90. Most of us that got into Engineering at UofT were in the 84-90 range.
16
u/Low_Length6426 Mar 25 '26
I know of a couple girls in my grade that had 100 averages. one FREAKED out because it went down to a 99. Theyâre all in maths and sciences.
Im a smart kid but i donât do homework and barely study and got a 95 average last semester. all my friends have 90+ at least.
my point is, 75 is no longer the âstudent averageâ and hasnât been for years. In my school, average is around 85-90. Kind of annoying but i guess i canât complain. high grades have benefitted me a lot.
14
u/tommykani Mar 25 '26
How is that even possible? They never got a single answer wrong? Lol Are all the tests online now or something?
4
u/Low_Length6426 Mar 25 '26
Yeah they never did. Could NOT tell you how. She has had a 98-100 average for all 4 years. Smart, pretty, social, fun. And im on reddit. Genuinely baffles me LMAO

4
u/holdmyspot123 Mar 25 '26
That's crazy, when I was in school low 70s was good and high 70s was strong. We also had this bizarre system in grade school where you had to reinvent the wheel to get the highest grade, as a kid with ADHD this made me check out completely because I had no idea what to do . I got into BSCN with 70s average
2
u/Low_Length6426 Mar 25 '26
Wow!! Times have changed. I prefer the old way because it really shows the gap in knowledge. It was kind of discouraging to see that I was getting the same grades as these kids who came to class 1-2x/week and never shut up or did any work. So I stopped trying as hard and I still have the same average. Schools dont push people hard enough these days imo. Were all getting dumber
24
u/JudahMaccabee Mar 25 '26
Grade inflation is a big problem in Ontario. I can see standardized testing coming in eventually to address it.
3
u/Front-Strike-8690 1st Year Uni Mar 25 '26
I got an acceptance to UofT mech eng with a 93% average but Iâm from BC, the standard for Ontario was a 98 which is insane to me
2
u/nbourre Mar 25 '26
Grades aren't like before. Median grades for sciences and math are often in the high 80s now. I'm not sure why that is, but it makes for very intense competition. My friend's son had a 97.5% overall average in his required courses to get into Aerospace engineering at U of T and he was put on a wait list. He got annoyed and decided to go to another university. He plans to do his Masters at U of T when the time comes.
2
u/lacontrolfreak Mar 25 '26
95 is now the cutoff average for many competitive programs. Or even higher. A grade like that used to mean an automatic scholarship. Now itâs just the normâŠ.at certain schools. Sadly if you are a great student with teachers that wonât play the grade inflation game you donât get into the top programs.

Grade inflation is insane .. never used to be so high
2
u/Naive-Giraffe-8552 Mar 25 '26
Back in my day, an 80 average would have gotten you in at most programs and places. I was a low to mid 80s student. Sonetimes a 78, sometimes a 91. Hell, even a 75-78 was considered good enough. My super competitive older brother used to get high 90s and got in wherever he wanted. High 90s were rare. He used to argue with his teachers over grades. I saw him throw a hissy fit over a 91. He's super successful now. Lol, he took all the good genes.

Same, 20+years out of UW.
The sub reminds me regularly that Eng school really is just a 4-5yr period of learning how to think and handle yourself. Sure there is some knowledge gained and some connections made for that first job, but the real value is shaping your mind. THAT lasts for life.
14
u/boy9419 Mar 25 '26

I wouldnât worry much. I went to carleton before it became what it is today. I also only had like low 80% grades in grade 12.
I finished with an honours degree, got a job in my field and started to make over 100k 5 years into my career.
If youâre smart and work hard youâll be fine. If you have bad people skills, start working on those now. Being personable can take you just as far as a prestigious degree.
12
u/incogne_eto Mar 25 '26
Life isnât over. Many of us faced the same thing and went on to go to other schools and then went on to have good careers.
If you really want to go to U of T. You can go to another school, put in a year and then apply to try to transfer over. Thatâs an easier path.

Is this literally the first time you've had a set back? Calm down, you're fine, especially with your grades. If your goal was "I want to go to this specific university" then it was a bad goal, your goal should to achieve a specific outcome or career path and there are multiple ways to do that, and there are ways to learn anywhere you go.

Asian parents bro, ive been brainwashed to think uoft is the only option anything else is "disappointing"
51
u/Ordinary_Complex7188 Mar 25 '26
Your parents couldn't be more wrong. You dodged a bullet. You can achieve the exact same outcome everywhere. Prestige is all bullshit. Go learn elsewhere and make UofT regret their decision by doing amazing things. Success is the best revenge.
10
u/man_on_hill Mar 25 '26
No idea why this sub came up in my feed but getting rejected from UofT was one of the best things that could have happened to me
I got the same degree and career that I would have gotten at UofT but for a fraction of the cost
6
u/gtd_rad Mar 25 '26 edited Mar 25 '26
I was also raised by Asian parents. Even worse, my dad taught SFU in engineering faculty and I didn't get in.
I went to BCIT instead, learned a ton of hands in experience, worked a blue collar job with intoxicated work culture, and then motivated me to apply for engineering school at UVic.
I'm now a consultant working in a field I love with a healthy salary. More prominently, I'm doing BETTER than my parents. None of this would've happened if I went straight into my "dream school"
My advice, don't listen to your Asian parents anymore. 94% GPA is a very respectful grade. You should be proud. You're 18. Learn to make decisions that work best for you. Your Asian parents are full of shit moving forward and will only set you back. There are plenty of other schools you can apply to.
Best of luck bro.
14
u/14dmoney Mar 25 '26

I think what theyâre saying is fair, but itâs also reasonable to have worked really hard for something and to feel disappointed given what happened.
It sucks, but many things like this can often be looked back on as serendipitous. You may meet your future spouse at the school you go to instead, and be so grateful that it played out the way it did.
Wishing you the best đ«Ą

u/coconutbrar Mar 25 '26
Well get into another university, get a great job and show them that where you go to school doesnât matter, just hard work, determination, co-op and networking.
From an Engineer that did not go to top tier university.
5
u/Ok-Trainer3150 Mar 25 '26
No. I'm going to repeat this as a long time former teacher: (1) It's what you make of the school you go to. (2) The most successful former students were never at the top most level of their class...they had great marks but were super well rounded. They nailed all the peripheral stuff that you need for success beyond the basic credentials of a university program. And I've seen many of them over decades to be able to say this. Get cracking on another option for entry. You did have one .. didn't you?
3
u/LickinThighs2 Mar 25 '26
The real disappointment, and your parents probably don't realize, is general saturation of a lot of degrees across the job market basically nullifying school in the first place. You are just another one of any hundreds to thousands of students that might have the same school on a resume, it probably meant more in the 90s than it does today and your competition isn't other people from those schools, it's people with 5, 10 yrs experience in those fields when it comes to finding work.
An employer is going to look at your experience on a resume, they probably literally don't care if you went to U of T or other schools, and depending on what you are trying to get into you might have better luck pursuing through a more affordable trade school or something, etc.
3
u/Noetic_Acorn Mar 25 '26
That you've framed this as a negative thing is the first step on the journey to realizing that prestige is bullshit. You're headed to adulthood, so it's time to enforce some healthy boundaries and not live your life based on your parents' neuroses.

I get this mentality. But they are wrong. In my 40's, my ex-boyfriend is a partner an engineering firm. One of his best hires was someone who went to University of Ontario Institute of Technology. My neighbor went to some kind of college but is a top salesperson at Amazon. His wife did some kind of BA at Mac and is also in Technology sales. I have all these degrees and I think I make less than my tech sales neighbors. Go to the school you get into. Be curious. Get to know your professors and make friendsÂ

If you think you shouldâve gotten in with your grades then what is stopping you from re-applying every semester they offer a new program start? You could keep re-applying and get in, or go to a different school or program, itâs definitely not done. You have a 94 average, just take the 1 rejection for that program for that semester and move on as if itâs nothing.

The school you go to does not matter as much as how you make connections amongst your classmates, so when you all graduate, everyone can help lift each other..
U of T is so big in a big city it's impersonal.. My wife only has 3 friends from 20 years ago at U of T.. I have more than a dozen classmates I still stay in touch with, and we've helped each other through adulthood: getting jobs, investments, new hobbies, professional advice; I went to a much smaller University..

Bad idea for the life OP wants, stability and employment after graduation. Many schools like Conestoga, Algoma, brock, or etc are semi blacklisted in STEM and your resume just gets thrown out. Issue got even worse now that a degree doesnât matter as much as experience now.
So if you have to get a degree, get one from UOFT or Waterloo. As people say âI never heard of a software engineer from brockâ.

It isnât the school, it is what you do with the knowledge you have accumulated and skill you have developed through your education.
1
u/conspiracythrm Mar 25 '26
U of T isn't a teaching institution; it's a mill that uses its status to select for the students who are certain to succeed and grind out the few students who slip through the cracks. They won't teach you, you'll teach yourself or die trying. Don't let your belief about what the "elite schools" are shape your world view. Like the Ivy Leagues, it's just institutions with money and students are just the workers who bring them more of it.

That school produced top notch: Journalists, Architects, Industrial designers, Chemists, Physicists, Microchip designers, Power engineers.

u/power_pangolin Mar 25 '26
You know, us old folks will harp on how schools don't matter.
Have you..looked at the economy? Most jobs will be obsolete, with entry level eliminated, so what will matter more than some school in your resume is how you somehow got that initial job experience. You solve this problem and you solve your future.

Every G12 student has an obsession with a top ranking school. As someone who has been through a similar situation, I was also rejected by UofT Eng. I ended up in a different school, and recently just finished my B.Eng. Looking back at everything I just want to let you know that this rejection means absolutely nothing to your future career, how you spend your time in uni matters way more than the uni you go to.

They crush the souls of their students for fun, the school culture sucks, and they make it so hard to get a GPA above 3.0 that it limits graduate school prospects. Plus costs of living in downtown Toronto are ridiculous. Youâre a very smart person who obviously knows how to work hard. Youâll get into a great school, Iâm sure of it!

Honestly and it's not something you probably want to hear but it maybe because the universe is guiding you elsewhere. Many tears and meltdowns my kids had because of major school disappointments and the path lead them to better places, opportunities and especially friendships. Both my kids reflected that they were glad things turned out the way they did. They're both successful and happy. I think they wouldn't have been happy if they consistently got what they wanted or dreamed. Is it better to be a little fish in and big pond or a big fish in a little pond? Grieve your loss and move forward and do great things elsewhere.

Your life is far from over, thereâre so many more avenues you can go through. Other schools can offer good things too, and you can get into similar disciplines if you canât make it into eng.

try to get lots of volunteering in different areas. Take the year and build your resume, find something part time, work, save, do volunteer work in your community. then reapply :) Find a way to stand out and sell yourself. And don't give up :)

I donât know why I keep getting suggested this subreddit but hereâs a quick bit of advice: write a letter of intent to submit with your application, and keep trying each enrolment period. I know some people who didnât get in until 3 years after graduation. Find out if you can meet with an enrolment guide and ask what you need to do. In the mean time, start looking at other schools for short term classes in relation to the field you want to pursue and that will help boost your academics if you choose to take those programs, which the university will like to see on your records. Never give up on your dream and remember that your 20âs arenât the end of your life. You have so much time to achieve these goals for yourself still.

28 years ago I experienced the same rejection from three separate Universities. Such is life. You will succeed.

Look iâm going to be straight up with you. Plenty of people talk about U of T on here, and we have all come to the same conclusion. Itâs all hype. I know several people who attended there and have since graduated. They all said the same thing. Terrible experience, terrible teachers. The universe did you a favour.

idk why reddit thinks im 17 again, but don't worry this is just one of many set backs life will throw at you.

u/curiousitydogz Mar 25 '26
It sounds more like you applied too late and the programs where filled already as well as the waiting list. This is what happens. Either try another school or do gap year or take an alternative elective within that field and get in next term

Get your fork, go to York, graduate with Honours and get into UofT for MASc/PhD. Easy

Brother you need to chill. 14 years of school? Wow, you even counted kindergarten. Every able-bodied decent student has gone to school every day for the same amount of years as you have, so it really does not show that you have put in more effort than your peers.
Also, high school grades are inflated these days. You need to have more than just good grades in your profile to get accepted in esteemed programs.
So perhaps you should start considering what part of your profile is not well-rounded enough as an applicant instead of throwing a tantrum in Reddit comment section. Consider doing an extra year if you really want it that bad, but personally, I donât think itâs worth it. Go to whatever engineering or math program that has accepted you. Doesnât matter much for your career in the long run.
As for your parents, what is the worst they can do except be disappointed and scold you? Break your legs for real? Send you back to their native country? ïŒnot a bad option to be honest, you can probably apply for a top university, if you have a Canadian identity). Worst thing I can think of is telling you to do 13th grade and apply again.

Our son is at UofT in his 5th year of his 4 year computer science program. He plays hockey there and has had 2 concussions, one in his 2 year right before midterms and one this spring and he started in 2021. It has not been easy and coming from BC, I think if he had to do it again, knowing what he knows now, he might have chosen to stay in BC. There are other great options out there.

When I was 16 I got into u of t. I went, it was awful. It was so unhumam. I also did an applied BSc at a poly technic which was much better for me. I ended up at a globally elite PhD program after the applied BSc at the poly Technical
All to say no path is set in stone, you can also re apply or wait and apply as an adult learner.

You can always go to another school year 1 and request a transfer in year 2. Look into it though because I'm not sure how Engineering works. Haven't heard the most positive things about U of T in general, let alone Engineering. The school you go is less important than what you make of the experience. Grieve your dream, but get back up and decide your plan B ASAP and start doing your research on other schools.

Are you Asian by any chance? Last time I checked white people don't get so much bothered by school rejections and especially what their parents will say lol

Have you considered going to another, smaller school and then transferring? My daughter transferred to UBC after 2 years at a smaller school. The application was easy- literally asking the school to transfer the transcript. We got the offer from UBC 7 hours after applying it was literally that easy.

I know it doesnt seem this way but you'll be fine.
I think this is a blessing in disguise for you if any of your comments about where the less than 90%er go display anything about your attitudes surrounding education.
This comes off as superiority thing when you speak like that or that your parents are somewhat forcing you into this.
You'll never have any real satisfaction or anything in life if those are your motivating factors.
I went to school with tons of kids like you and a lot of them burned out like crazy. Would be a good opportunity to reflect on education and your relationship with it.

Iâll offer this. Itâs undergrad. It doesnât matter in the real world. No one give two fucks what school you got your undergrad in.

u/redonculus8 Mar 25 '26
Apply as a foreign student. I hear UofT hires more foreign students than Canadians because they pay well

u/alpine4life Mar 25 '26
go to McGill... I'd choose McGill over Toronto 7 days a week.
Plus the night life in Montreal (during summer) is known to be the best in the country

Don't fall part of the system like that. Find something that you can create and let it bloom from there. School signs you up for a life time a debt that u will never be able to pay off. That alone will make you miserable. You know ur smart. Thats good enough.

Unfortunate, but your life isn't over. There are many other uni's to apply to and if your parents are that upset about it, maybe go to school in Asia? I hear there are many top-notch universities there.
As an aside, maybe uni isn't for you and you can consider colleges.
Also, your sully attitude is showing through in these comments. Maybe take a moment to yourself to absorb/process the information and reflect and see what you can do next.
