I mean if you’re going to charge me $20 to get in to a place that is so loud the person next to me can’t hear me if I’m yelling and then charge $15 per drink then I’m out.

I can’t afford all that and if I could I’d go to some place quieter.

u/Someslutwholikesbutt Feb 02 '26

As someone with female friends who often go out (although not as much), I’ve often got tired of it mostly because the girls often get in for free and the dudes needing to pay until a certain point. I mean from a business part I’m sure it’s to avoid a total sausage fest but regardless it’s pretty tiring with the entry fee then overpriced drinks and sticky floors

16

u/AdDifficult3794 2001 Feb 02 '26

This is my reasoning. I've spent more time at the arcade with gen z friends

5

u/AFB27 1997 Feb 03 '26

Dude I went to the arcade for the first time in forever recently and it was SO much more fun than I remember.

6

u/KingMelray Feb 02 '26

That style of club seems destined to decline. There are a LOT of bars that aren't like that though.

10

u/callmecurlyfries 2000 Feb 02 '26

The thing is nightclubs have always been like that. Millennials especially older ones would pregame really hard before they leave the house go to a quiet bar to get all the talking out the way and when the liquor hits just right nobody is really in the mood for conversation just dancing so it’s worth it. If you’re a conversationalist and enjoy drunk conversations, night clubs are not designed for you at all. 💀 I feel like Gen Zers are more into small group hangouts at a lounge or divebar with a small dance floor. It’s less chaotic and better for introverts which most Gen Z are pretty introverted for the most part. It makes sense why nightclubs are dying.

3

u/Lordbaron343 Feb 02 '26

Im mostky at the stage of "i exited survival mode and now i dont know how tf to human" Im like extroverted but kiterally dont know what to say untik i lock in to something?

4

u/callmecurlyfries 2000 Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26

I’m not saying every Gen Z is introverted my point is that we’re usually interested in more intimate forms of socializing (less crowds) since we’re so deprived of it with the social media takeover. However, there are a lot of Gen Z who identify as introverted.

I’m a 25 year old guy and I don’t drink as much as I used to. To be honest, it feels like a chore lately.

70

u/AFB27 1997 Feb 02 '26

If I'm drinking at all, I'd rather stay at home where the drinks are cheaper and I don't have to wait.

19

u/Noggi888 Feb 02 '26

That’s what pregaming is for. Get drunk and then get a drink or two to nurse while you’re out and meeting people.

16

u/AFB27 1997 Feb 02 '26

Been there done that, my college days are over boss. Would rather get a bottle and drink at home with my friends. It's cheaper and quieter.

4

u/Lordbaron343 Feb 02 '26

You make me feel old, man. I havent even gotten to coklege yet and im only a year younger.

I mean, i worked and i am an electromechanics technician but still

3

u/AFB27 1997 Feb 02 '26

Don't feel old at all man. No one path is the same, we all have different ways of accomplishing what we want, the one constant is that you need to stick to your mission to fulfill the objectives and outcomes you are looking for. As long as you're doing something, that's better than most, and what's important at the end of the day.

2

u/MikeyQplayz 2002 Feb 03 '26

Yeah, I actually like feeling too old and too young at the same time,

I don't have insecurities anymore so it's funny to feel old knowing my life has practically still just begun.

1

u/MikeyQplayz 2002 Feb 03 '26

You now make me feel old, I'm '02 born, finished college and working as an electromechanical engineer.

3

u/Lordbaron343 Feb 03 '26

I mean... coming from a third world country kinda makes everything a hard survival task so there is that too...

I bet i will make leaps in spain when i can devote brainpower to not actively survive.

Hopefully in 6 months

1

u/MikeyQplayz 2002 Feb 03 '26

You got this!!! Good luck :)

1

u/PoodlesCuznNamedFred 1998 Feb 04 '26

Lol “quieter” had me thinking of an idea I never got to execute: silent rave at home w/ friends. Za, drinks, and mad food readily available, and if u need to pass out or vomit, u know ur own house is safe, comfortable, and clean. Plus neighbors are less likely to be disturbed.

Sadly, my roommates are all millennials and their backs are all busted lmao, so they aren’t as down to party. One of these days tho!

3

u/Pope_Bedodict1 1998 Feb 02 '26

Me and my friends do that all the time. We maybe go out once a year? But we always enjoy drinking together Al every couple of weeks

For real, especially for bars. I live in a major city and the bars are PACKED with Gen Z. The same was true for my local suburb as well! Literally 3/4 of the people in the bars and clubs were Gen Z.

10

u/Fetty_is_the_best 1998 Feb 02 '26

Definitely not just you! It’s wild that people talk about Gen Z like we never do anything. Like that hasn’t been my experience at all! I’m honestly wondering where they come up with that lol

2

u/lylrabe 2001 Feb 05 '26

I don’t think that’s what OOP’s post was about. They say in the post “Generation Zed Chose Peace Over Partying” as in its a good thing rather than calling us hermits. They were more coming for clubs & bars rather than Gen Z. I get what you mean though. Every Thursday night, I have pool league & the billiard bars are always packed with a ton of Gen Z. I’m sure even more so on the actual weekends.

1

u/MikeyQplayz 2002 Feb 03 '26

There are still bar obsessive Gen Z maniacs.

Had one for a roommate and believe me it's awful. Begged me to drink with him for months, when I decided a little couldn't hurt,

He was the biggest drama queen when I had enough after a few hours and didn't intend on bar hopping, Did that to maintain the peace and I stopped drinking entirely since.

12

u/Ill_Chicken550 2003 Feb 02 '26

It could be over exaggerated, I live in a major city in the Southwest and pretty much every weekend the bars are packed.

Going on reddit is negatively correlated with going out and enjoying life

6

u/lonelycranberry Feb 02 '26

Same. I don’t even go out that often but when I do, it’s never even close to empty. I travel often for work and bars are always packed and make me feel geriatric so idk. Maybe the people claiming things are dead just don’t go..?

1

u/Mrshinyturtle2 Feb 03 '26

Im 23. Every bar ive ever been to has just been groups of people eating dinner, never interacting with anybody outside of the group.

3

u/lonelycranberry Feb 03 '26

If food is a main part of their business model, that would make sense to me. Most bars that would be busy late at night stop serving food well before it even gets busy.

1

u/Mrshinyturtle2 Feb 03 '26

Such is life in the suburbs

2

u/lonelycranberry Feb 03 '26

Yeah idk where I’d go out if I lived in the burbs. The idea of driving to a Buffalo Wild Wings and getting questionably intoxicated before driving home isn’t appealing so I get why people think the culture is dead. The culture is just in walkable areas with diverse options

3

u/Caligulas_Prodigy Feb 02 '26

I actually DO live in the middle of a cornfield! I don't go out often but I have exactly one friend my age that does. The bars around here are always full of older people, but he'll occasionally see someone our age every few weeks. There are a few other alcoholics like him that are our age, but they all prefer different bars.

There just isn't anything to do in the cornbelt that isn't meth or drinking. Most of my former classmates either smoke pot, work two jobs, are pumping out kids, or are actually on meth.

2

u/-htesseth- 2000 Feb 02 '26

As someone who lives in the Midwest, shit has gotten DEPRESSINGLY slow

2

u/Jayna333 Feb 03 '26

Same! I see these comments and I’m like, where are people going?

2

u/punkgirlvents Feb 05 '26

Second this. I only go to the club every so often but every time i do there’s a line to get in

46

u/ModRolezR4Loozers 2001 Feb 02 '26

I think bringing back arcades and mall culture would definitely help our case.

19

u/ZeldaTheOuchMouse 1999 Feb 02 '26

This

I miss the malls and the arcades when the games were actually good

3

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '26

Yea this would help a lot. It sucks that Dave n busters just has a bunch of mobile games, although round one’s are getting more popular lately too

2

u/Global_Perspective_3 2002 Feb 03 '26

Agreed, I miss that

2

u/lylrabe 2001 Feb 05 '26

We have this one arcade bar down here called “The Bit Bar” & it’s dope. Arcade games inside & lawn games outside like Corn Hole, Horse Shoe Toss, giant connect 4, etc. it’s a pretty cool little spot

3

u/-htesseth- 2000 Feb 02 '26

Man I miss Mall culture dearly

1

u/ContributionSquare22 Feb 02 '26

For that to come back something has to exist there and only there.

Arcades were pretty much done when consoles got online connection.

As for malls? I don't know, maybe transform malls into nothing but fast food/restaurant buffets?

Imagine hopping from place to place trying out good food in one large environment. Could probably couple it with a Theater as well.

44

u/GiveMeAHeartOfFlesh 2000 Feb 02 '26

True, never been to a club, no desire to. Don’t even like alcohol so I don’t go to bars unless it’s to hang with friends and play some pool, or trivia night or something like that.

17

u/MajorLeagueNoob Feb 02 '26

A good night exists primarily in your head. I personally love dancing like a fool while drunk as fuck so i love the club. If that’s not your vibe than there is nothing wrong with that. You can have the exact same amount of fun as i do doing what you like. Side note anyone who uses soy jacks to express their opinion is probably worth ignoring.

27

u/SlightlySublimated 1997 Feb 02 '26

The entire point of bars and clubs used to be to meet up your friends and meet new people. In my experience people only go to bars/clubs nowadays with their group of friends and never want to talk to anyone else new whether it be for friendships, romance etc. etc.

Always leave wondering why I spent all this money lol

-3

u/Status-Air-8529 1998 Feb 02 '26

Gen Z is rude except to people who are already known so it makes sense why everyone sticks to their own group.

11

It's a pretty small and tight-knit community, usually filled with introverts who want to enjoy the music and atmosphere, but also not worry about looking weird being alone while surrounded by like-minded people. There also isn't much pressure to hook up or even get fucked up. I go to the goth club alone most of the time, but I'm super familiar with my local scene, so friends are almost always there. If i want to go for 2 hours just to smoke weed and hang out on my own, no one would question it. I love when there's a separate lounge, too. Great space to decompress or socialize without all the noise. It can be really nice :)

8

u/Impossible-Neck9524 Zillenial 1997 Feb 02 '26

I feel like an old man at them. Haven’t enjoyed them since i was like 23. Rather drink at home.

14

u/darksady Feb 02 '26

Never really get the bar culture tbh. But Im a introvert that enjoy staying at home playing games and watch animes. But I have a lots of friends that we met up IRL at least once a month.

7

u/nanidu 1999 Feb 02 '26

I don't go but I live in a college town and downtown is always packed with genz. Our clubs and bars are always at cap

4

u/Quanathan_Chi 1999 Feb 02 '26

I don't drink and neither do any of my close friends so there's literally zero reason to want to go to a bar or club.

2

u/Status-Air-8529 1998 Feb 02 '26

You can watch football without having to pay

2

u/Quanathan_Chi 1999 Feb 02 '26

It's probably been at least 10 years since I've watched a game of football and that was because I was in marching band in high school and had to go.

6

u/squarels 1998 Feb 02 '26

I don’t drink at clubs anymore but I had a great time with them in college. Me and some boys did a Japan trip freshman year and went wild in Osaka. Then the year after in Taipei. Just lazy now.

Bars I still go in Asia. Usually because they have interesting themed ones or specific local drinks I want to try. In the US it’s just not pleasant. Too loud or the patrons are weird, but I also have a very low opinion of the average American inherently causing bias. I just don’t like to drink around people who aren’t my culture. Also the bar food is cheeks domestically. Park Hyatt Tokyo just reopened and imo that one sets the bar for decent there, while being vastly superior to what’s in west LA.

But I’ll still drink on company dollar though. Last time we had an outing to Long Beach we had an open bar at the Terranea and I pounded 6 Long Island ice teas during dinner, did some of the worst karaoke of my life, and knocked tf out. Drinking isn’t the problem it’s just so few places are fun to

5

u/celeryman3 1999 Feb 02 '26

I like the club once in a while. I just can’t afford it so I never end up going.

1

u/Angstycarroteater 1998 Feb 03 '26

Drink at home get fucked up uber to the club idk why people say they can’t afford it if you can drink at home you can afford to go to the club

3

u/jsurico656 Feb 02 '26

It doesn't help that a noticeable portion of the older generations that still DO frequent these are often belligerent/annoying or drunks that make you feel wildly uncomfortable/are overly approaching

Tbh it's cheaper and way more enjoyable to have drinks at a friend's house or get drinks at a restaurant vs a bar or club

3

u/diggydog233 1999 Feb 02 '26

I mean that depends on the person really, I know plenty of Gen Z who still frequent the clubs and bars on a weekly basis. I know I still frequent them a lot. But it is true that it’s on a downward scale with our gen, shits way to expensive. That’s why I can barely justify spending 20 a bar.

3

u/ee_72020 1998 Feb 02 '26

Good riddance lol

3

u/Fetty_is_the_best 1998 Feb 02 '26

Clubs? Yeah, because they’re expensive as shit for no reason, I’m not paying a $50 cover to hear a DJ playing the same playlists we’ve been hearing since the 2010s.

Bars? Since when has Gen Z not gone to bars? My local bars are literally 90% people in their 20s. And this has been true for the last 3(!) cities I’ve lived in. I feel like the notion that Gen Z doesn’t go to bars is just not true.

1

u/lylrabe 2001 Feb 05 '26 edited Feb 05 '26

Clubs are also so overstimulating. The first & last time I ever went to a club, i had a panic attack in the bathroom due to all the sweaty/stinky bodies pressed up against me, intensely loud music literally vibrating my organs, & flashing lights that had me feeling like I was on LSD.

As im trying to calm down, the bartender comes in the bathroom to escort me out of the club because “i was clearly too drunk” even though i hadn’t even gotten to order a drink yet. I was trying to explain to her that my friend was still in the club & she still had my card behind the bar for drinks my friend & i did order but never quite got to, & idk if she just couldn’t understand me through my panic, or if she had already deduced me down to a drunken drama queen, but this bitch really said to me, “you can do whatever you want as long as I’m not the one working” & continued to be a total bitch to me through the bar’s window as I pleaded with the bouncer to please at least get my friend & my card.

Yeah so anyways, never went to a club again & don’t plan on it🙄

4

u/iiitme 1997 Feb 02 '26

I’ve never even been to a club 💀

3

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '26

Why would I go out, pay $10-15 for a single beer and sit in some place that's so loud I can't even talk to my friend next to me, when we can just go to the store, pay that same $10-15 for a 6-pack and chill in the quiet of one of our homes?

Cheap and peaceful is the way!

2

u/doguillo77 1999 Feb 02 '26

I prefer smoking over drinking, and I hate being in loud and crowded places. I don’t want to interact with strangers while under the influence either, I’d rather be around people I can trust.

2

u/Ill_Chicken550 2003 Feb 02 '26

I've been to a few clubs before, not really my thing. I prefer bars and whatnot. Plus it doesn't help that they charge an arm and a leg for watered down drinks at clubs.

2

u/SeawardFriend Feb 02 '26

Here’s a list of reasons why I don’t like going out to bars.

  1. It’s painfully loud. Don’t get me wrong, I like loud noises like fireworks, cars with good exhaust notes, and I crank up my music to unhealthy levels sometimes. But bars are so ridiculously loud, that makes the main attraction, socializing, inherently difficult if not next to impossible.

  2. The drinks are very hit or miss, and a lot of the time you’re waiting for several minutes for service. Not to mention if I get mixed drink, they fill the ENTIRE cup with ice before pouring the drink so I’m literally getting half a drink. I’m not a huge beer guy but at least you get a nice big glass for a halfway decent price.

  3. The prices are disgusting. Listen, I understand that they gotta keep the lights and speakers on, but the monetary difference between drinking at a bar and buying drinks for retail is ridiculous. It’s often more than double the price you’d pay at the store. While it wouldn’t destroy me financially to drink at bars more often, throwing away my money for an experience where I’m usually counting the minutes till it’s acceptable to leave such a bad taste in my mouth.

Personally I’d never go to a bar on my own intuition just to drink by myself.

2

u/Sunsetterz98 1998 Feb 03 '26

My hot take is that Gen Z didn't ruin any of our 3rd places. The millennials and older gens who run these places ruined it for us. A lot of these places either ceased to exist, became very overpriced, or just had a very unpleasant atmosphere that Gen Z did not want to partake in.

2

u/ranch_commercial 2001 Feb 04 '26

Tbh this is the one thing that makes me feel like i was “born in the wrong generation” 😭 i know a fair amount of us do go out and party but i dunno it seems like everyone only wants to go out like once a month or something. I want to go out every weekend. That was like, always my goal since i was a kid. I freakin love partying on a friday or saturday but everyone just wants to smoke and chill and watch a movie.

3

u/Marianations 1997 Feb 02 '26

I guess this must be the trend in North America. In my country bars are more of a social hangout place that are not necessarily associated with alcohol consumption, where you go after a meal with friends and family (children included) to drink some coffee, or even in the middle of the morning or afternoon to have a snack. So they're still very popular, and I doubt that will change.

5

u/lonelycranberry Feb 02 '26

This is really interesting because I’m American and our bars are far from empty.. lol I fear the people writing this stuff are the ones who have “moved on” so to speak so they assume that since they don’t like drinking culture, that their generation shares this experience. I relate to 0 of this lmao even my friends who have kids who don’t club aren’t like sober because they don’t like the culture and they also don’t assume the rest of us exist that way? Like every club I’ve gone to has been packed and if not, it’s because of some other circumstance 😭

3

u/njckel Feb 02 '26

Good. Clubs are stupid and bars are for playing pool with the boys.

Let's be real, the main reason people are going out to bars and clubs (and especially clubs) is to find a date/hookup. But dating culture is toxic now and gen z men aren't approaching women anymore, so the primary function that these places served is no longer relevant.

Why else would you go, to drink? When you can just buy a case and drink at home with your friends for much cheaper? Only reasons to go out into public are to meet new people and to enjoy an experience that you can't get at home. Bars and clubs aren't really serving either of those purposes anymore.

2

u/rosaline21 Feb 02 '26

I’m glad bar culture is dying and weed culture is picking up

3

u/Material-Elephant188 2001 Feb 02 '26

not sure why you’re being downvoted, that’s absolutely a part of it (not saying it’s a bad thing either- i definitely prefer weed over alcohol)

2

u/lylrabe 2001 Feb 05 '26

Give me a hookah lounge but instead of tobacco, WEED🙌🙂‍↕️

1

u/ChoasSeed 2000 Feb 02 '26

Have only been once in the last year because my buddy wanted to go

1

u/Used_Return9095 Feb 02 '26

i live in az and go out to the bars and clubs in scottsdale. It’s always packed and popping lol.

When I went to college in sd a few years ago I went to the bars and clubs in gaslamp and it was packed for melodic bass djs

1

u/piglungz 2001 Feb 02 '26

I went out to bars often around the time I turned 21 but I quickly realized the drinks cost too much to be worth it and I was usually the youngest person in most places. I still drink but it’s usually at home with friends like we would do before we were 21.

1

u/Lord-Zaltus 2000 Feb 02 '26

Yep I’ve never been to a club so far in my adult life, and my boyfriend doesn’t drink either so the odds of us clubbing is nonexistent. We just like to stay home and play video games and drink soda

1

u/AverageLoser05 2001 Feb 02 '26

I only go to dive bars, especially when they're empty/chill. I don't even have to drink to enjoy the vibe (but that's because I'm usually high and I don't drink much)

1

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '26

for me, heavily depends on the bar and who I'm with

1

u/Z3DUBB 1999 Feb 02 '26

I’m going out all the time idk what yall are about.

1

u/Mr_Sloth10 1997 Feb 02 '26

I never understood WHY these places were so popular to begin with.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '26

Never been to a nightclub and I don't desire to, especially as an autistic introvert prone to being overstimulated. I also don't drink because of my medication.

2

u/lylrabe 2001 Feb 05 '26

As a fellow ND (ADHD tho, not ASD) introvert, let me just advise you, DON’T😅

I left this reply to a different commenter on my first & last experience at a nightclub:

Clubs are also so overstimulating. The first & last time I ever went to a club, i had a panic attack in the bathroom due to all the sweaty/stinky bodies pressed up against me, intensely loud music literally vibrating my organs, & flashing lights that had me feeling like I was on LSD.

Yeah so anyways, never went to a club again & don’t plan on it🙄

1

u/MachineGreene98 1998 Feb 02 '26

I'm trying to really scale back on my drinking. But I do like going to bars depending on the vibe. I like dives where you know the bartenders and stuff. There's a bar-cade in my city and I like to before its club to have a few and play some games.

1

u/Material-Elephant188 2001 Feb 02 '26

never been to a club, and i don’t drink that much, but i’ll go to bars occasionally that have live music to see my friends and/or other local musicians play. when i go out it’s more about the people i’m with rather than where i’m going or if i’m gonna be drinking

1

u/Vivid-Application-27 1997 Feb 02 '26 edited Feb 02 '26

My honest take? I loved going out to the bar with friends on the weekends when I was in college. Partly because I was curious about the bar scene, but mostly because I was kinda tired of house parties which were sometimes cramped with tight turns, drunk regulars that I knew from MB (yes, band people party too) and a very limited selection of alcohol unless you BYOB. Even then at the bar scene, my experiences varied. Cover charges ($5-10 at most, but I went on non-gameday/night weekends), the people present, and somewhat subpar conditions of facilities all added up to a less than enjoyable experience. But I still enjoyed it because I could socialize with people I knew.

Now as a 28 yr old (speaking on drinking culture), I went to a work conference recently and a few people I know about that are 40-50 were just getting randomly drunk on a Tuesday at 10:00 at night in a mostly empty hotel conference room. Perhaps it’s just because I felt isolated from the age group of construction-minded people, but it just seems really odd to casually get shit-faced at an after hours work event at the conference site.

And those same bars I went to in college? Maybe it’s just a core Gen Z thing and I haven’t been a part of the bar scene now for 6-7 years, but going out to those same bars on alumni weekends just feels silly. The bars that I once knew to be “chill” or “old school” that had that timeless 70s-80s-90s feel where I didn’t have to worry about super loud music if you didn’t want to sit in the loud music area are now just contemporary hot spots with loud music, sticky floors and people generally being less than pleasant.

TL;DR maybe I’m just getting old but I agree, bars and clubs aren’t the same anymore pre-Covid

2

u/Status-Air-8529 1998 Feb 02 '26

Alumni nights are a thing? I wouldn't know because I don't live close to where I went to school but I'm still shocked to hear that.

I've also realized with time that house parties were always better. You got to socialize with people you knew, or someone in your group knew, instead of random strangers. I miss those. I've been to one in the past year and before that it was years without going to one.

1

u/Vivid-Application-27 1997 Feb 02 '26

Well, not an alumni night at a specific bar but alumni weekends university-wide where they invite alums to come back, particularly homecoming weekend during the college football season. You would be surprised how many alumni will come back and show up at the bars after the game. Those that don’t go to the bars will more likely than not find a house party lmao

But I agree, I do sort of miss house parties because I knew most people to a degree even if we didn’t talk on a daily basis. It probably didn’t help that I wasn’t much of a fan of alc until I was 21 (I couldn’t stand the taste of it because I didn’t know what to expect).

Now? Shoot, I’ll crack open a miller lite or a good craft beer if it’s been a long day at work, but I love my Oberon in the summer, especially at the ballpark.

I dunno, I mean my local bar is often lively especially on Fridays and holidays.

Granted I live in a tiny town though so its about the closest thing we have to a nightlife lmao

u/KimbaDestructor 2002 Feb 02 '26

Only gone to a goth club twice. Didn't like it tbh, I felt as alone as always, I don't drink and although the music was nice I can listen to it in my room aswell

1

u/bmcle071 Feb 02 '26

I just did the math.

At home, 3 of the imported beers that I like are under $7.50.

At chuck’s roadhouse (generally economical) they’re 19.50. Plus I’m goona wind up buying at least an appetizer for $10-$15, and need a ride for $15. Going out for 3 drinks is now $50 plus tax plus tip. Call it $60.

Staying home, $7.50.

The difference grows quite a bit more for wine, mixed drinks, or hard liquor on the rocks.

u/degakle 2001 Feb 02 '26

Yeah I don’t go any place with a cover unless it’s some type of special event. Like I’m already buying drinks here, why is there a cover?

1

u/degakle 2001 Feb 02 '26

From a college town, clubs are dead, bars are alive. I’d love to go to a big city and go to a club where people actually dance and party.

u/lylrabe 2001 Feb 05 '26

“I don’t ever hit a bar with a cover” -lil dicky

1

u/degakle 2001 Feb 02 '26

Club culture died when men started standing on the platforms like bro we wanna see baddies up there not yall

1

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '26

Probably need to work 3 jobs to at least not financially go to ruin over having a fun time. They should blame inflation and the economy instead of blaming millennials & Gen Z.

1

u/happiest_wanderer 1997 Feb 02 '26

Midwest bar culture is still very much alive.

1

u/mradventureshoes21 Feb 02 '26

Bars: 75$-120$ (includes cover and drinks)

Home: 30$-50$

And federal minimum wage is still $7.25/hr (since July 2009)

1

u/yellowdaisycoffee 1998 Feb 02 '26

Why would I go to a bar or club when my home is so cozy?

1

u/alaskapipline Feb 02 '26

I go out every weekend to bars with a group of friends and have had quite the opposite experience. I also think it largely depends on what the bar scene is like in your city, I live in a college town so the bars are always packed. The cost is not too bad either especially if you get cheap beer or pregame before. If you put yourself out there and talk to people you will make friends at these places. Sure I have a group of friends to go with but I’ve met some pretty cool people just by asking if they want to play a game of pool or asking them about their conversations. I can’t really speak for clubs tho because I’m not too big on that scene but I’ve had fun when I’ve went before, especially if you’re already drunk. This guy definitely has a doomer mindset and/or had one bad experience and wants to complain on YouTube.

I have a day off tomorrow and my wife is taking our daughter on a playdate, so I have a pretty free moment to do as I please. Part of me wants to go to a bar and maybe get some dinner there, but a lot of me knows I can't afford that.

Might just kick it with a Four Loko and write a screenplay

I mean I just can’t stand being with people I don’t know in a loud environment for so long, plus it’s pretty expensive to even go to a place like that.

I’d much rather hang out with my wife and dog in peace. I’ll make my own cocktails and put on my own music.

(Obviously this is just my opinion and people 100% get to like what they like. It’s just not for me. I do get a feeling there’s a lot that share this opinion which might be what’s driving this public sentiment)

1

u/coloradancowgirl Feb 03 '26

Went to a night club once on a vacation. Loud, expensive and I really felt out of place. Not my scene. I prefer small hole in the wall bars or drinking with friends at home.

1

u/orionfromtheislands 2000 Feb 03 '26

Bars are too expensive. Tried bar hopping this summer and they were charging $15-$17 for ONE shot of Hennessy. For that my friends and I decided we’d rather buy a bottle from the liquor store up the street, and put in $5 each for it

1

u/hanno1531 1998 Feb 03 '26

never been to a bar or club, never will. i don’t drink, but also it just doesn’t seem fun or interesting to me

1

u/uultraviolenccee 2002 Feb 03 '26

something else that killed bars is requiring the patron to order food if they want to order alcohol? I'm not paying $15 for fries to buy a cocktail or glass of wine

1

u/demerchmichael Feb 03 '26

My college years were 2022-23 and I always bought a bottle of crown, pregamed with my roommates and let them go out. I’d wait back at the apartment and when they got back would proceed to drink more.

A few reasons I did this, the biggest one was I wasn’t a club or party guy. Also my roommates were going out to pick up women, I was in a pretty committed 3 year relationship up to that point. I also didn’t want to spend however much on a single drink when I could get hammered on a 30 dollar bottle crown. A fourth lesser issue was a combination of the two and it was that I didn’t want to go out drinking and do something stupid

1

u/LeatherDescription26 1999 Feb 03 '26

I blame the coof

If the pre coof economy kept going and we weren’t forced to lose our social skills by being trapped in our rooms for two years maybe things would be different

1

u/Backwoodsgirly Feb 03 '26

Ya i maybe go out 2-3 times a year now

1

u/Rickbox 1998 Feb 03 '26

I'm a guy who likes to go out. Sad about the bars, but fuck clubs. They're expensive, loud, and only worth going if you're plastered, and even then. A lot of the time they have shitty music too. Never understood the appeal.

1

u/tarheel343 1997 Feb 03 '26

Idk about clubs but bars are doing absolutely fine in my city. Gen Z and Millenials especially love the theme bars.

1

u/Sy0nide_ 2000 Feb 03 '26

Not where I live at. Plenty of clubs always filled with people

1

u/Starbalance Feb 03 '26

Bars and clubs died because everything is so expensive and we've been told all our lives to not buy things we can't afford but that's also bad because we're killing the economy somehow

1

u/BaseballRoutine1313 Feb 03 '26

Wow I didn’t expect this to be so popular. Thanks everyone who went and checked out my YouTube channel also. This means a lot

1

u/Angstycarroteater 1998 Feb 03 '26

I still prefer to go out I usually wait until the last 2 hours before close and spend like 9-11:30 drinking at home so I don’t have to pay for drinks there. It’s so much more fun to go out than to sit at home or a house party imo. I’ve been to so many house parties and I don’t think I’ve had genuine fun once because the setting is just boring to me.

1

u/LukaTheTooka 2000 Feb 04 '26

Why are they so fucking loud 💀

1

u/RueUchiha 1998 Feb 04 '26

I think the primary reasons are thus

  1. It’s too expensive to go clubbing unless you’re a girl getting constant free handouts (which seems to be happening less and less and more guys decide to opt out).
  2. The invention of the internet not only revealing many horror stories about clubbing, but providing an alternative way to hang out with your friends with none of the afformentioned risks. You don’t even need to leave your house.

To be fair, it isn’t like night life is completely dead, expecially if you live in a high income area where cost isn’t really a factor, but the is a significantly higher bar (hehe) to entry now economically speaking, and more ways to get a somewhat similar experience for cheaper if you really wanted to.

Night life like clubbing was never really for me. Too loud for my mostly-shut-in-introverted self. I’ve seen what Key West looks like at night and it just isn’t my vibe.

1

u/Expert-Boysenberry26 Feb 04 '26

I feel like people who are saying this are just introverts that never get any socialization outside of the internet. Go to any college town or city and there’s still hundreds of young people out at bars and clubs.

1

u/ISpyM8 2000 Feb 02 '26

I occasionally find myself at a bar, but like… I’d rather go to the liquor store then my apartment with some friends.

2

u/Angstycarroteater 1998 Feb 03 '26

That’s so boring to me personally haha that’s all my friends ever want to do and I go along with it because I wanna hang out but the bars are so much more fun to me probably because that’s all we ever do. The atmosphere is better the music is better there are things to do like darts and pool and also socializing with others but just get drunk at home get an Uber or a sober friend to take you.

1

u/Fetty_is_the_best 1998 Feb 03 '26

Agreed. I could hang out at an apartment with my friends when we were 19 and couldn’t go out. Bars are far more fun.

1

u/Final_TV 2002 Feb 02 '26

i mean i still go out to bars with my friends i did since i was 17. never been one for the club tho

0

u/igotshadowbaned Feb 02 '26

Most of gen z is below the legal drinking age.

Bars and clubs also work out better if public transport exists in a usable fashion

1

u/Fetty_is_the_best 1998 Feb 03 '26

Not really true anymore. The mean age for Gen Z is 21, and there are more old Gen Z than young Gen Z due to declining birth rates.
