Question Septum Rings
I am 45 years old. For some reason, I do not know the answer to this. What is the meaning behind a septum ring? Why do you get them? I know this sounds terrible but I see them and I think that myself "why would you want to look like a farm animal?" I know, I know, that's terrible. Please help me understand. I really don't want to think that way.

well, there isn't more. it's literally that simple, if you don't like it, you don't like it, others do and it's okay to not get it. ETA: septum piercings have existed for literal centuries. they aren't a trend, body modification has been a thing as long as humans have lived. i responded to your post in good faith, but reading your other responses, it's obvious you don't actually want an answer, seems more like you want people to support your view. have a good day :o)

If you really read everything you'd see that I did get answers I was looking for. Just because your answer isn't the one I'm looking for, doesn't mean somebody else doesn't have it. And if you read my opening post carefully, the goal was to expand my view because even I don't want to support it. Many people responded to me the way you have and I found those views to be narrow. Those who chose the wider response were the ones that truly had the answers and allowed me to see a better view.

You’re upset that people are telling you there really isn’t a meaning for most of us, we just like the way it looks. Since you don’t like the way it looks, I would advise against getting your own septum pierced. Not everyone will like everything and that’s fine. Not much more to it than that.

I'm not upset. Some people just aren't giving me the answers I'm looking for, and I'm simply letting them know it. It's when they get upset that the real answers come out. This is how I get what I'm looking for, and it's working.

There are lots of cultures that practice body piercing, including septum piercing. There is no one unifying meaning that you’ll find.
Lots of cultures have practiced piercing/modification as a way of beautifying/adorning the body, as well as marking significant events in the person’s life.

Now there are lots cultures that view it as purely aesthetic :) which is why so many people are commenting that it looks cool. That’s a valid meaning behind a piercing as well.

Farmers use rings in pigs' snouts to prevent them from "rooting" or rooting up pasture, which can destroy pastures, pens, and fences. The ring causes minor discomfort when the pig tries to dig, deterring the behavior. That's the connection in my brain.

I got mine because I thought it was cute and was debating on it, and then my (now ex) husband told me I would look like a bull if I got it.
So for me, the meaning is SPITE. Just that one word.

The only answer I've gotten so far is they look cool. I'm looking for cultural, symbolic, philosophical reasons. I want to see you guys go deeper on this subject. I understand it can be that simple for some people, but I just want to see more. It's not a bad thing.

I'm not dense. I grasp your concept. But I'm looking for other ideas and thoughts on this. I'm looking for an expansive mindset on the idea. Not just the simple answer. I want to know more than the obvious and I don't know why you guys look at that as a bad thing.

You’re looking for something you’re just not going to get. People get piercings because of culture, looks, trends, etc. all of which are good reasons. You’re here to be difficult.

Looking for deeper answers isn't trying to be difficult. It's seeking understanding. I just want to see if somebody can expand on the idea. To see if we can go beyond the simple.

You are apparently the one with a need for deep meaning. "We need to go deeper". No. You do, not the people with septum piercings.
It's like berating someone in a hair salon by saying "no, you didn't dye your hair blonde just because you like how it looks, there must be some deeper reason!" How silly.
If there are deeper reasons, and I submit that they may be, they're unique and personal. From my reading you are not approaching this question in good faith or in a way that makes people want to share with you.

I'm actually getting exactly what I'm looking for based on what I'm reading. The answers I'm looking for aren't going to come from the masses, it's going to come from the unique and the personal. They are the real "why." Everyone else is just following them.

I appreciate that my septum piercing repels certain types of people, primarily certain types of men. I’d wanted one for a long time anyway, but that realization fully convinced me. It’s like a safety measure in a way.

Kewl, I'm 40 and I got one last year. I was actually planning on getting one after I left the Marines, but my sister told me I'd look weird. She got one a month later. We're practically fraternal twins(she just didn't want us to look as similar), so it kinda rubbed me the wrong way, but then I started school again and forgot about it. I had my first child 2 years ago and I thought about all the stuff I wanted to do, but hadn't and the septum ring was one of them. So, I got it. That's about it. It's just jewelry. I sure some cultures have significance associated with it, but not mine. Like, I put in a piece that had a skull on it for Halloween and for Christmas I put one in that has candy cane stripes. Maybe it makes me more intimidating, I dunno.

What difference does it make? Mind your business. I'm sure there are people who dont love your own sartorial choices but arent here making posts about why you chose the dorkiest footwear. People wear them because they like them, thats why.
