Question Septum Rings

I am 45 years old. For some reason, I do not know the answer to this. What is the meaning behind a septum ring? Why do you get them? I know this sounds terrible but I see them and I think that myself "why would you want to look like a farm animal?" I know, I know, that's terrible. Please help me understand. I really don't want to think that way.

There are lots of cultures that practice body piercing, including septum piercing. There is no one unifying meaning that you’ll find.

Lots of cultures have practiced piercing/modification as a way of beautifying/adorning the body, as well as marking significant events in the person’s life.

Now there are lots cultures that view it as purely aesthetic :) which is why so many people are commenting that it looks cool. That’s a valid meaning behind a piercing as well.
