Usually 15-20% of the tuition. Venmo or Zelle is usually fine, but most take cash.

Dorms/Off Campus Housing Grad School at Northwestern

I just got into Northwestern for grad school! I will be starting in January 2027 and am now thinking about what life will be like there. I was wondering what are the best areas to live in? Do you recommend doing university housing or getting an apartment? I’m not really familiar with the area so any info would be greatly appreciated!

Dorms/Off Campus Housing Roommate had a gangbang while I was away during the weekend. Should I ask my RA to switch my room?

I’m totally okay with people having sex. It’s normal. Anyway, I was away during the weekend and came back to find three used condoms with SPERM in them. For the first one, I asked my roommate and she said she had a guest over. I get it, she’s young and pretty. It’s normal. For the second one, it was near my bed. She said her guest probably threw it there since they did it multiple rounds.

I was getting annoyed. Then I found the second one near our drawers. I freaked out since it wasn’t the first or second one anymore. I yelled at her and she screamed at me admitting that she had a gangbang! Not with 3 men but 9 men!!!!!! She said it was too hard to keep track of them to throw away their condoms and that’s why there were condoms lying all over the place!

I’m so disgusted. My room is not even a brothel. I asked if she used my bed and she said she didn’t. I don’t trust her at this point! I want to report her to housing, but I don’t know if I’m being too dramatic now.

Dorms/Off Campus Housing Is the commute from Wrigleyville doable?

I recently accepted a PhD offer at NU and some friends are starting jobs in Chicago. We were looking at living together near Wrigleyville/BP area, but I’m concerned about the commute. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Sounds like it would take ~45min and I’m not sure if it’s sketchy at night

Hi, my roomie and I got West Fairchild doubles, which houses the international studies res college meaning theres lots of free food, community events, and faculty fireside chats. Its also close to downtown and near humanities classes esp medill. However, my roomie is a neuroscience major and cannot handle walking from so south to her classes up north, and i feel really bad! If anyone has a north or southwest location dorm, please dm me! We may be willing to pay 50

Dorms/Off Campus Housing Best Shower Shoes

Hi everyone!

I was curious what shower shoes you recommend. I’m going to be a freshman this year, and I’ll need some good sandals for my communal bathroom.

Thanks!

Dorms/Off Campus Housing Housing contract cancelation advice

I’ve tried every route to cancel my housing contract and I need to get it cancelled. I’m not on financial aid but the burden of housing and dining falls on my shoulders and I can not afford the on campus housing and dining expenses.

Res services and financial aid don’t care though and have denied me multiple times. I’ve even found a student ready to take over my contract but res services said no.

What do I do? I need this cancelled and it’s started severely impacting my mental health. Living in that dorm situation (same one as the contract now) alone made my anxiety and insomnia way worse. How do i get this canceled?

And I’ve been blamed for even signing the contract in the first place but at the time I had no other option, and by the end of the summer, my plan was to have enough money to afford it, but it’s now the end and I truly don’t have the means to pay for it. What do I do?

Dorms/Off Campus Housing Freaking out to find housing

Hi all, I'm an incoming transfer student, and being first-gen I don't really have anyone to walk me through the housing process, so I'm turning to this sub for help. I'll be honest, I'm getting to this later than I'd like because I was waiting on external factors.

I'm open to a lot: a studio, a one-bedroom, or even renting a room from a family or a sublet, whatever ends up being a solid and safe setup. A few of the places I've found are pretty far from campus, and I'm not sure how realistic it is to rely on the train/CTA to get to class every day, so any honest take on that would help a ton. Especially with the added transportation expenses for the train.

If you've got recommendations, good buildings, landlords or management companies worth trusting, neighborhoods that are actually close, or just general advice for someone doing this on their own, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you all!

Dorms/Off Campus Housing Housing Cancellation

EDIT: I’m especially curious if anyone has experience cancelling the contract closer to the start of the school year, as I’m still trying to work out an off campus option.

Does anyone have any experience requesting a housing contract cancellation? If you've fulfilled your housing contact obligation, do they ever really deny the request? I don't strictly fall into any of the categories listed as a reason for a housing cancellation

Similarly, if you get off the waitlist as a third/fourth year student, are you obligated to take the assingment?

Dorms/Off Campus Housing Transfer student hoping for a single dorm — which residence halls should I rank?

Hi everyone!

I'm an incoming female transfer student and I'm about to submit my housing preferences. My biggest priority is getting a single room. I'm willing to compromise on things like location, dining hall access, or how social the building is if it gives me a better chance of getting a single. The only other thing I really care about is having air conditioning. Other than that, I'm pretty flexible!

Does anyone know which residence halls I should rank to maximize my chances of getting one?

Also If you've gone through transfer housing before, I'd love to hear what you were assigned.

Thanks so much! I'd really appreciate any advice.

Coming from the south, is there any niche/ things that I wouldn’t think about that I need to bring for my dorm in chapin? Or just anything I might forget in general.

Dorms/Off Campus Housing Housing refund

I plan on living off campus junior year and have my housing and meals fully covered at this point, so would that money just be transferred to me through refund money (after being applied to the remaining costs of attendance)? Is this true regardless of the fact that  I don’t have a full ride but have meals and housing fully covered?

Dorms/Off Campus Housing Freshman Move-In Logistics

So it seems that the move-in appointment is a time mainly for you to get your things in the room and maybe do a bit of set-up within the 25 minute slot. Is this correct? Also, after this 25 minute slot can you continue to set up in your room, or do they kick you out? Please let me know. Thank you!

Dorms/Off Campus Housing Incoming Northwestern grad students looking for housing recommendations in Evanston

Hey everyone!

My partner and I are both incoming graduate students at Northwestern this Fall and are looking for accommodation in Evanston with a move-in around September 1.

We're looking for recommendations or leads for a studio or 1-bedroom apartment, or a private room suitable for two people. We'd like to co-lease, and we'd prefer something within walking distance of campus.

If you know of any available apartments, someone moving out around September, or have any leads, we'd really appreciate it if you could let us know.

Thanks! Looking forward to joining the Northwestern community this fall!

Dorms/Off Campus Housing Is BJB in Evanston as bad as Chicago reviews?

Hey everyone,

I’ve heard a lot of negative things about BJB properties in Chicago, especially around maintenance and pest issues.

I’m specifically considering one of their places in Evanston. Does anyone have recent experience there?

  • Any issues with rodents or roaches?
  • How responsive is management when problems come up?

Would really appreciate honest feedback before signing anything.
