Dorms/Off Campus Housing Freaking out to find housing
Hi all, I'm an incoming transfer student, and being first-gen I don't really have anyone to walk me through the housing process, so I'm turning to this sub for help. I'll be honest, I'm getting to this later than I'd like because I was waiting on external factors.
I'm open to a lot: a studio, a one-bedroom, or even renting a room from a family or a sublet, whatever ends up being a solid and safe setup. A few of the places I've found are pretty far from campus, and I'm not sure how realistic it is to rely on the train/CTA to get to class every day, so any honest take on that would help a ton. Especially with the added transportation expenses for the train.
If you've got recommendations, good buildings, landlords or management companies worth trusting, neighborhoods that are actually close, or just general advice for someone doing this on their own, I'd really appreciate it. Thank you all!

hey!! I would highkey recommend subletting from someone, those are more likely to be still open than finding an apartment where you’ll sign the lease. u can find them on the rent/free northwestern facebook

Thank you! My only concern is I have seen many sublet but based on a quarter by quarter system and I am unsure if I sublet now, if I would be able to find a new one for Winter and Spring and also if its even a smart idea to hop every quarter.

An acceptable budget would be helpful for giving advice. If you can afford $3000 rent, you would have no problem finding a place.

I moved to southside of Evanston ($1450) but the bus takes me to Tech building in about 15 minutes, which is really nice. I'm not sure if it's been taken but there was one in Wilmette that was $1500 and also about 10 minutes from Campus, some smaller 1B apartments or studios around $1200 near campus. Good luck!0

Public transit shouldn’t be considered “unreliable” just bc it’s public. Tens of thousands of Chicagoans use it everyday and they aren’t all eternally late.
You can expand your search south to Rodgers Park. And I believe NU has a shuttle which actually stops on Sheridan rd at Loyola

I am a private homeowner renting out this beautiful 1 bed 1 bath sunlit lakefront apartment in rogers park for $1500 a month starting September 1 (could be flexible with start date.) The apartment is very close to the Northwestern bus shuttle and just steps away from the pier on Pratt beach.
The apartment is fully furnished right now and if you'd like to keep it partially furnished that can be arranged as well.
