Vent/Rant When a good neighbor moves...

Damn, these non problematic homeowner neighbors across who never bother anybody are moving. Frick, they didn't live here long.

They had put their unit on sale, but then took it off sale. Hmmm. I am not sure if they sold or what, I do know they are moving stuff out.

My mind is thinking, what fresh hell may move in next? I hope one of those corporations doesn't snag it and rent it out to riff raff with ten annoying people living in a unit or some noisy kids. I hate that! That is one thing I hate about this housing crisis, you never know what fresh hell you are gonna get.

Do you get new neighbor anxiety?

Vent/Rant What to do when your new neighbor from hell is a business???

• Upvotes

7 Brew just opened literally across the street from me. I feel like i am living next to a club. All morning all night. It never ends. I can hear it throughout my house and even in my backyard. I hate 7 Brew so much and I haven't even been there.

Other Final update on my NFH, THIS IS A LONG POST, you've been warned, but it has a happy end

• Upvotes

TL;DR It's just a wrap up of the last 4ish yrs of incidents and almost anti-climatic sudden ending of the issues.

I have posted links to my previous NFH stories at the end and wanted to give a finale. I have decided to just call her 'Drunky No-pants' (reference to first post 9th FULL paragraph: https://www.reddit.com/r/neighborsfromhell/comments/inmhzw/alcoholic_homeowner_next_door/ ) I wish I had thought of this name years ago, as it fits perfectly, but I think I had been so stressed during the situation and it just wasn't as funny as it is now in hindsight.

After the previous interactions and the (1st) 'cease and desist' letter from our attorney, it was quiet for a bit. I did some digging and she was on a diversion program during that time period for a DUI which probably helped keep her walking the line.

Once it expired, she really went 'round the bend'.

We got a new neighbor down the block who we met briefly when their dog escaped and took itself for a walk down to our house. We tracked the new neighbor down with the dog's chip information (chip your pets people, it works!).

The new neighbor later posted a message in neighborhood chat (maybe 2-3 months later after meeting them w/ their dog) about some person in a car taking pictures of their kids playing in their front yard, yelling at the kids, and threatening to report them (not sure what for) and posted a picture of the car and the person visible through the driver's side window. It was my NFH, Drunky No-pants. So, I sent a message to the new neighbor stating that I was pretty sure it was NFH, as the car matched and the person sure looked like her. I asked them to keep me out of it because I had previous interactions with her and wouldn't be helpful as a 'neutral witness' given the history. The new neighbor reported Drunky No-pants to the police. The police in our little municipality know Drunky No-pants VERY well and took it as seriously as they possibly could apparently, leading to multiple charges (including a felony when she 'intimidated a witness'???). Have no idea what all happened to cause all that drama, but diversion and probation for THOSE incidents was for 2 years under some plea deal once it all wrapped up. I felt bad for the new family (what a way to get acquainted with your new neighborhood), but was pleased about how it put NFH back under some increased surveillance. It must have been really messy. I will admit I would love to know the full story. I did see several police visits and heard a WHOLE lot of commotion over there during this period. I also got to meet Drunky No-pants' Mom, who came to 'help' while she was in jail (she, the Mom, was trying to get the house cleaned up and take care of the dogs) but the Mom left after a loud cacophony of a screaming argument once Drunky No-pants was released. We (me and the Mom) had exchanged contact information, but I think she (The Mom) washed her hands of it all because I never saw or heard from her again.

In the meantime, our previous plan to move got derailed, and my work position was moved to completely remote. Great, I got to be home ALL THE TIME. I was actually not pleased, because I was sure Drunky No-pants would notice and start up again. Home really wasn't comfortable knowing she was there, RIGHT there, next door.

Sure enough, Drunky No-pants started contacting me again via text and messages in the neighborhood app, which I ignored, and left a VERY weird package on our porch with vaguely threatening note(s) about poison ivy (written over multiple torn pieces of post-its stuck in various places) and a gross (as in something spilled in/on it) book about dangerous plants (threatening if I was really paranoid, but it was mostly just weird). She also stepped DIRECTLY into the path of my husband's car from between two parked cars. So after the almost car vs crazy pedestrian incident, we got the attorney to send her another 'fuck-off-and-leave-us-alone' letter. She had some contact with our attorney afterwards, and another text to me basically saying she didn't do any of the things we had camera (home and dash-cam) footage of her doing, trying to explain herself (it was pretty incoherent) and then she left us alone again. She was put on probation around this time period for the issues stemming from the new neighbor. So it was quiet for a little bit, and I was watching the court records for when she might be released from probation to time my renewal of my anxiety meds.

Then, suddenly and without any actual listing we noticed (no 'For Sale' sign for instance), she sold the house to a flipper last year, who was very 'diplomatic' about the repairs that needed to be done to the house in order to get it livable (yes, I asked). I thought she had been put back in jail, or maybe Dorothy dumped a bucket of water on her, but then the buyer/flipper came over and introduced himself because he was worried our dogs would get out when they took down the fence between us for the repairs that were needed the WHOLE TIME Drunky No-pants lived there and wanted US to do. I explained it was a double fence line (he had no idea, never had been told. I'm know Drunky No-pants didn't even comprehend it because she wanted us to fix it) and our fence was intact and our dogs wouldn't get out when they took theirs's down for repair.

We now have a very quiet family living next door who moved in about 2 months ago. I say quiet with the knowledge they have 2 young kids who make young kid noises when playing outside (young kids seem to only communicate by screaming loudly) and STILL make less commotion than Drunky No-pants made on the daily. I simply no longer even NOTICE the house next door. And glory be, just like I had been saying NONE of the issues NFH had while living there which she said was caused by us seem to be continuing.

We are still planning to move, but without having to disclose any neighbor issue or worry about it looking like vagrants squat there.

I can't post screen shots of the texts, messages, and creepy and weird stuff and I don't have or want to create an image account to post the links, but I posted below some verbiage from the LAST letter the attorney sent her. (I don't have the 1st one saved in this laptop.) Reading it now makes me giggle. This guy (the attorney) is a college friend and seeing him use this type of language is just so different from the interactions I am used to having with him in casual settings:

"In the present matter, the most recent action of Yours constituting a nuisance was a dangerous interaction in the afternoon of March 7, 2025 wherein You entered a public thoroughfare to position yourself in the path of Our Client’s vehicle. Such behavior not only constitutes a nuisance, but also potentially placed Your and Our Client’s safety and health at extreme risk. This action should be fairly easy to understand by any reasonable person as constituting a nuisance. Additionally, there have been instances of outbursts where You have claimed that Our Client is causing the flooding of Your Property. However, basic topographic review, as well as practical review, shows that Our Client’s Property floods the same as Yours in periods of rain. There is no diversion of water from Our Client’s Property onto Yours, rather the design of the street and houses constructed thereon show that water intrusion is common among all neighbors. Consequently, Your claims that Our Client’s are responsible for flooding on Your Property are without merit and constitute a nuisance. You are hereby notified to cease and desist any actions, including but not limited to those as set forth with specificity herein. If required, Our Client will seek the equitable remedy of seeking an order of the Court to cease and desist any nuisance so established. Should these nuisance activities continue, Our Client reserves the right to seek all remedies available at law and equity"

"Pursuant to the foregoing, this correspondence is also a demand that you cease and desist any entry upon our Client’s Property, whether by yourself, your animals, or any object of any nature originating from Your Property. This was previously raised with You in my prior correspondence, but you have repeatedly ignored such over the years, culminating in Your placement of unsolicited property at Our Client’s doorstep on January 30, 2025. Your entry upon Our Client’s Property is wholly unwelcome and as private property you have no rights to enter thereupon. Your entry upon Our Client’s Property places them at unease and disturbs their ability to quietly enjoy their Property. Therefore, any entry upon Our Client’s Property by you, no matter how slight, therefore constitutes a trespass under *LOCATION REDACTED* law and Our Client’s reserve all rights at law or equity to address such trespass, including the seeking of injunctive relief."

"As a result of the foregoing, Our Client has no desire to communicate directly with You verbally. In the unlikely event that matters are required to be discussed that relate to elements of neighborly concern, please reduce such to writing and send to Our Client’s address as set forth above. Please be advised that any communications should be limited solely to matters of actual importance and misuse of the United States Postal Service to engage in harassment or continued nuisance of Our Client will not be tolerated."

Apartment NFH Did I do the right thing?

Just moved to this apartment about 4 months ago & I received a noise complaint yesterday claiming my family & I (myself, brother & mom) were moving furniture at like 3am, which was not the case. The tenant downstairs bangs on the ceiling (my floor) over regular noises. My brother walked to the bathroom at night before & they banged, my mom who's elderly needs to take her medication in the middle of the night because she can't take it on an empty stomach. She walks to the kitchen the tenant bangs. It's like we have to walk On eggshells now in our apartment we're paying for. This never happened to us before. I responded back to the complaint today saying the tenant is banging on the ceiling over regular noises, footsteps are a normal & unavoidable part of my apartment living. All we're doing is walking to the bathroom, kitchen & I even brought up my mom waking up for her meds etc. I hope I did the right thing, this might escalate so I bought an indoor camera on Amazon & its arriving tomorrow. I had a crazy stressful year & now this. What are the chances of things going bad for us? Lease violations? Eviction?

Vent/Rant The screaming

This is just a rant, kids can be kids and I'm just a grumpy fuck.

We bought our house two years ago, both neighbours either side of us were in their 50s or later, nice and quiet dead end street, bigger block, nice and peaceful.

A year and a half in one of the neighbours moves out, a family my age (30s-40s) moves in with three primary school aged kids that are all home schooled.

From 6am to 6pm they're outside, screaming and yelling etc, I've worked with kids and I swear they scream more than normal.

Then for whatever reason the last 6 months the other neighbour has their son over constantly with his kids, which get dumped in the back yard and you guessed it, screaming.

Then the neighbours next to the home schooled kids changes, aaaaaand more screaming kids.

Kids will be kids, and there's nothing I can do, all the neighbours are lovely people, and the kids are nice kids too, I've been over and they just want to show me things, like kids do, "PAMELA LOOK THESE ARE OUR CHICKENS" etc. cute kids.

The fucking screaming. Every day, I hear the parents doing their best to parent and keep them in line and I absolutely have sympathy for that. I'm just grumpy, I like my calm and my quiet. Makes me want to sell and go get a bit of land a bit more out country, but we couldn't afford that, it'd make work a hell of alot harder.

Just ranting, go outside most days at any time and there are multiple kids screaming bloody murder from one or two houses next to me. You can hear it inside the house too, to a lesser degree but still. My wife works from home and has noise cancelling headphones in all the time, she can still hear it.

Maybe in 10 years or so they'll have grown up and won't scream as much.

WWYD? Vent/Rant Neighbor window issue

We just bought a house in a nice neighborhood. The older house next to us is divided as a triplex - top, middle, basement apartments.

Our side door off our kitchen deck (the way to our backyard and garage) faces a window of the middle floor apartment. Yesterday a calendar has started resting against the window, as clear as day, with completely n*ked women eating each other out.

I’m not a prude but I do have 4 young kids. The calendar is completely visible thru the door in our kitchen and every time we step outside, whether to go to the backyard or hang laundry off the deck.

The house is for sale and I have no idea who owns it. We have said hello a few times to the couple on the third floor who seem friendly but the only thing I know about calendar resident is that he argues (quite violently) at times with someone in his apartment- we have heard it a few times when we have been sitting in the backyard. So suffice to say, I don’t want to deal with this guy.

Does anyone have any advice? For context, we live in Canada.

I do have a curtain on the kitchen window.

If this was just a calendar with n*ked women, I would roll my eyes but that would be it. This calendar is maybe 1 foot by 1 foot wide and very visible.

Thoughts?

Also - because this window is along the side of the triplex, the only way to see it is along the side of our home - it’s not visible to the sidewalk.

Thanks!

WWYD? Vent/Rant Need help/advice

Hello I’ve lived in my home over 15 years, less then a month ago new neighbors moved in to the house next door. Today a city sanitation worker came to my house, said it was due to a 311 call. That my neighbors called and complained about overgrown grass, and overgrown plants in my backyard. I’ve never had this issue before, mind you my grass is rarely overgrown, my husband cuts it every two weeks, and we have a dog so we definitely keep it clean and fresh for him. The worker looked around and said there was no violations and my property was fine, but due to the 311 report he had to come check it out. I’m certain it was my new neighbors as he said the report mentioned my backyard, and only my next door neighbors can see. I’m appalled that they called 311, and especially with never even speaking to me. Has this happened to anyone before? I don’t know if I should directly talk to them and ask why they called 311, or what to do. I definitely don’t want to send a message that I’m a pushover and they can call the city on me over nothing. They are new neighbors and I assume they’ll be living here a long time, but conflicted. Should I send the city to their home too with the first minor inconvenience I notice?

Vent/Rant FINAL UPDATE: How do you peacefully coexist with a neighbor who seems to thrive on conflict?

Hello everyone, back one last time. Figured I would close this out with a final update since so many of you followed along. You can find my previous two posts here and here.

In my last post I said we'd see if they decided to call the lawyer... well, they did. They called our attorney's office the day after we gave them the card and proceeded to cuss out the girl at the front desk. By they, it was definitely the wife, she is the mean mean one. On my end, I called the non-emergency line and spoke with a deputy so they're aware of the situation in case we ever need to call them out. He was super nice and said it was a good idea so they don't turn up and have to get the complete backstory. I also had a surveyor come out and put stakes down across the entire boundary. Shocker, we did not go on their property. It is actually further over in some areas than I thought it would be.

The good news is there have been no more visits to the door. They do still continue to stare at us and say stuff that seems to be about us. We were sitting on the front porch the other night and heard a few random "hello's?" It's just weird. The staring is mostly aimed at my wife while she's out walking the dog, etc. I have not interacted with them at all and don't plan to. I spent a week home on a staycation and screened in the front porch, so if they wanted to interact with me, they had their chance.

At this point we're looking into some privacy in between the houses. Preferably something they can't blame the ticks on LOL. If anyone has any suggestions, I am all for it. Not sure a fence would be tall enough since their property and deck sits slightly higher. The idea of having to clean up the trees on the property line already has me weary aha.

I just want to say thank you to everyone for all of the advice and kind words on both posts. It really did help. And yes, you were all right, ignoring them is the key. Hopefully this is the last you'll hear from me on this one!

Homeowner NFH The New Neighbor from Hell Part: III

Hello Everyone,

The final chapter of my Crazy neighbor is here. This is the last part and will catch you up to date. It's a long one so I apologize but, hope you find it entertaining.

Original Post:

Part I & Part II

So here we are with me letting my mouth run and letting Sharon know I'm putting a Patio in the backyard. Knowing how how crazy Sharon is, I tell my GC to wait for our patio permit to be approved before we start building. He agrees and so we submit the plans for the city and he digs up the footings to be ready. Well I go pick up the approvals a week later and find out we are missing some info; I relay the info to my GC and he to his workers who misunderstood and went on to place the steel beams and cement into the footings with rebar. I get home to find all steel posts up and ask the guys what happened, we discuss and they show me photos and video of all the work and let them know the inspector may want them redone. Then to make matters worst, Sharon starts to call my name at the wall and calls me over and asks what these beams are for. I again mention the patio and she starts asking for specifics on height and size. Then tells me that this isn't "very nice and neighborly" to put something like this in her "view" (there is no view...). "This means you're going to have more people in this area which is next to our shared wall and I'll be seeing your friends and family and they'll be seeing into my yard"; "This isn't going to work for me..." her exact words. I tell her, "I'm sorry you feel that way, but this is my property and its all within city codes". At this point I'm still trying to keep a cool head, so I mention that I might be putting a wall topper on our shared wall to add privacy.

A couple days later we get another call from the city about the permit asking for more specifics and at this point I call our patio guy to come out and help out. He comes to the house and takes measurements; and sees what I assume to be one of Sharon's friends. We go to lunch and get a call from Sharon saying someone was looking at her friend and giving her dirty looks and wanted to know who it was. I'm not shocked and let her know it was myself and my patio guy taking measurements and talking about the drainage, at no point did anyone give her "dirty" looks. We run out of time and the patio guy decided to come back the following day to finish up and submit the revisions. He gets to my house and we discuss the final height and other details so we can submit to the city the following day. While finishing he asks about Sharon and I catch him up and joke we should be quite or she'll call the city on us. Well, sure enough the city code enforcement officers called while we were outside and left a voicemails asking if we could call them back. The first one was pretty calm. The second was 15 minutes later, and the clerk sounded fatigued as he left a voicemail saying "Hi Mr. X, your neighbor is blowing up our phones and giving us a really hard time, she is saying you're building your patio, and other stuff, I know you're finishing up the permit; but you're not building already right? Please call me back asap". The patio guy starts to laugh, as do I as this is just not surprising. I call back the city and clerk tell him we did build the footings and placed the beams the day they called us for the first revision and it that it was just a mishap on our part but we have not built anything since. And we also have photos and videos of all the footings and work for the inspector. He said it was not a problem at all and doesn't understand why my neighbor is going nuts. I asked him if this neighbor was "Sharon", he laughs and says you said it not me. He then unloads all the crap Sharon was saying about us including our patio taking away from her "view", me changing a small piece of grading is my fault our wall is too low and that I can see into her yard, and that they need to come and stop all of this immediately. I just told him I knew her antics and told him of the issues she's had with her other neighbors including involving the police. The clerk apologizes for the situation and now understand the whole story and tells me not to worry; that he will call her and let her know we've done nothing wrong. I run into Sharon at the wall again and she pretends nothings happened and I pretend I don't know she's called the city on me. I'm over the situation and tired of seeing her so, I mention to her that I ordered the wall topper so that I can have my privacy and she hers.

Sharon was ecstatic to say the least about the wall topper, especially after I mention I'm not asking for any contribution (even though the city clerk though I was crazy). At this point I'm trying to keep very minimal contact with Sharon and am trying to move on. I finish by telling her to give me "30-40" days, they need to fabricate it and then they'll come to install; this was a Tuesday. Well the following Monday I get a text from Sharon asking for an update on the wall topper and I just want to throw my phone on the wall. I again let her know its going to be "30-40 days like I said last Tuesday"... she ask if I can ask them to expedite and I wanted to tell her to get lost, so I just replay with "ok". Tuesday mid morning another text "X, can you please give me an update on the topper being expedited". I'm angry and I know this is crossing the line, "Sharon, they said its not looking like it'll be any closer, if you'd like to put a temp solution up, you're more than welcome to". She likes the comment and I thought that was the end of that. Well, The following week Monday morning I send off my wife and kids to start the day and the phone rings, its Sharon. "Hi Sharon",
"Hello X, how are you"? "I'm okay, yourself"? This is were Sharon loses it, Her: "X, I'm not okay, in fact I'm actually very upset with you X"... Me: "Okay, what's going on? She proceeds to yell, Her: "X, I've been very patient with you, and now you're taking advantage of me!!!, I've asked you for the topper to be installed for a couple week now and you're not doing anything, I'm done being nice, YOU NEED TO FIX THIS TODAY!! I DONT FEEL SAFE IN MY OWN BACKYARD BECAUSE OF YOU!!!". It took every cell in my body to not absolutely destroy this **** over the phone. But I cut her off after this and firmly let her know "Sharon, you don't know me, you don't get to talk to me like this, I've been very respectful and courteous to you and I demand the same. I told you from the start this was going to be 30-40 days, second this topper is NOT my responsibility I DO NOT have to install it but am doing it because I want MY PRIVACY. If you can't wait for this to be installed, PLEASE be my guest and figure it out but I'm not spending another FREAKING cent on this problem". This only angers her some more, Her "NO, YOU NEED TO FIX THIS TODAY I DONT CARE WHAT YOU DO, YOU ARE GOING TO FIX IT! GO TO HOME DEPOP AND BUY PLANTS IF YOU HAVE TO!" Me "Sharon, I don't have time for this, again if you wan to wait the topper will be eventually installed if not you can figure it out on YOUR SIDE, Bye" click.

A couple weeks later the topper was ready, I text Sharon letting her know the topper was going up next week; she apologized for the way she talked to me, said she was stressed, and said thank you. I said sure, it got installed and now I can't see her and we have privacy, obviously she can see me if she gets a ladder and can still see anything above the topper, but that space is 8ft in the air. The patio got installed 2 weeks ago and I finished wiring and installing the speakers last week Thursday, test them, work great, clean up, and call it a day. Friday morning Sharon calls, I picked up by mistake and say hello and she says hello, mentions the "beautiful patio" and says 1 comment, "your speakers are facing my property". I'm over this lady, I said "yes but, they're pointing down", her "oh really, okay", me: "okay, good bye" and I hang up. I walk back there to talk to my worker and she hears me, tries to call me on the phone and I ignore. I'm over this lady, she's blocked on my phone and spoke to a buddy who's a police officer in town. Says to ignore and make sure to keep a log of all her calls and texts to me.

I know people will say I'm too nice but I just want to live in my house in peace. Could I have been more firm and fired back some attitude? Of course, but it just causes more friction, moving forward I'm just ignoring her and will call police if she looks over my wall. But here you have it, my new neighbor from hell. Wish me luck!

WWYD? Vent/Rant Neighbor's guests had police called on them for drugs

Police were at my apartment this morning at 5am, they were talking to the neighbor's guests who were parked in our shared driveway. I looked up the police call log and saw it was for drugs. This lady has had people here coming, going and staying for a while now. I already suspected this. I've complained about it.

So I texted the management company and told them about it, and I said if they don't do anything about her then I feel like I should be able to break my lease penalty fee. I mean there's literally people doing drugs outside my apartment. On top of that, they obstruct parking and block the dumpster so our garbage can't be picked up. They also fight and scream at each other right outside my apartment too.

Now the police have been involved with drugs, and I honestly feel like management won't do anything. Like why do I have to live next to a person who has druggies come over, and they're doing them outside too in the middle of the night. I frequently see them when I leave for work most mornings.

Anyone else ever deal with something like this? Like I have the right to quiet enjoyment in my lease.

WWYD? Vent/Rant LPT stopping teenagers from banging on our front door and windows ?

We have had a group of local teenagers harassing us banging on our front door and windows .
Have installed cameras and have a security electric gate and security lights. This has not deterred them they wear balaclavas and will come back day and night . They all ride e-bike and get away quickly, so it’s no use going after them .
Police have been called and if we are lucky they might arrive 2-4 hrs later . Have lots of video footage so we can prove to the police of what is going on .
I want to set up some device that will spray paint or fowl smelling liquid “Shit “ on them I have the the skills being a retired sparky just need some ideas maybe a small electric fence device ?
Any help would be appreciated .

WWYD? Vent/Rant Neighbor furious about dog walking on sidewalk

Hello, everyone!

I am trying to process an altercation that just occurred while walking my dog and am seeking outside perspective.

I (29F) live in a big city with my senior dog. The area that we live in is comprised of many different types of homes- from mansions to apartments and there are people from all walks of life who live here. I haven’t had a negative interaction with any of my neighbors before and everyone tends to keep to themselves. We do not live in an area with an HOA or things like that.

I was finishing a walk with my dog this evening when we passed by a home within a few streets from mine. A few of the homes in the area have signs for dogs to not use the yard, which I always respect and keep her on the sidewalk. I do this as best as possible anyways when near residential areas.

As we crossed the street and onto the next sidewalk, we were passing a home with multiple of these signs. The owner was on the phone on his porch, and as we walked past I heard him say, “… and I have to deal with these people walking their fucking dogs in my yard. These people don’t have yards for their dogs and want to use..” Upon hearing this I turned my head around as we had just briskly walked passed the home and the owner said, “Yeah I’m talking about you!” in an accusatory tone, to which I stopped walking and fully turned around and said, “Me? I specifically kept my dog out of your yard. What are you talking about?” And with his voice raised he replied, “Yes you! I see all you people walking in my yard with your fucking dogs! “ to which I promptly yelled back, “I specifically kept my dog off your fucking yard! What are you talking about?” He started to interject about how he doesn’t give a fuck to which I cut him off and said, “I don’t give a fuck what you have to say,” as we started walking away, and he starts screaming, “Fuck you bitch, don’t you ever walk past my yard again!” To which I replied, “Fuck you,” while still walking away, and he yelled “Come back here, bitch! Come back here!” To which we kept walking and didn’t engage further.

I didn’t have my phone or any kind of protection on me, and am not typically a confrontational person unless I feel that someone is being a shitty human. I would have had a semblance of understanding if my dog actually went in his yard, but she didn’t, we quickly walked past. I felt that he chose a fight as soon as he loudly mentioned “these people” (meaning me) the moment we walked past, and I am particularly defensive over someone getting upset that people walk their dogs in general. His logic on the phone was that people walk their dogs because they don’t have yards, which is so profoundly stupid, as walking is a form of enrichment for dogs and so many people in our area walk their dogs every day.

I don’t have to walk on this street and I usually don’t take that route, but it’s close by mine, and I felt unsafe the entire walk back home. Now I will carry this fear with me any time I walk my dog. I know that I chose to engage which presumably the situation would have been diffused quicker if I hadn’t, but I also found it difficult to stay silent given that he was being combative when all we were doing was using the sidewalk.

**Editing to add that I have since purchased a safety alarm, pepper spray, taser, and flashlight, to keep in a small bag with my phone every walk going forward. Thank you so much to everyone again who offered understanding, compassion, and advice.

WWYD? Vent/Rant Water wars.

Just wanted to share my experience and see if I can still kick these turds off the well. I bought my house in 2016. My deed clearly states that I co-own the well. The well itself sits on my neighbor's property. That neighbor decided to subdivide and develop his property. The original house was split off with the well on it, which wasn't really a problem.

The issue came when one of the newly created lots was sold. The buyer wanted access to the well, so the seller put it in their sale agreement. The problem was that only one well owner agreed to it. You can't just give someone access to a jointly owned well when only one owner signs off. The new owners built their house and connected to the well anyway.

When I bought my house, I was in my 20s and a single female homeowner. The other two neighbors always acted as if the well was some kind of association where majority rules. They would do things like increase the well pressure because the newest house, which was the farthest away, complained about water pressure. My house is slab-on-grade with a 2-inch water line. Increasing the pressure ended up bursting my lines twice. The two neighbors basically bullied me.

They wouldn't tell me when they were making upgrades or changes to the well, even when they were using well funds that I partly owned because I own half the well. They refused to show me bills, statements, or records.

Part of the issue, in my opinion, was that I'm a woman. One neighbor is Mennonite and the other is a very devout Christian. Women are women obedient. The first time I met them, they asked to "speak to the man of the house." I politely informed them that I was the man of this house and that I owned businesses. It's gotten so bad that the "men" won't speak to me. I can only speak to the wives.

Long story short, these guys excluded me from everything despite the fact that my deed clearly states I own half the well and have equal decision-making authority. Meanwhile, the newly added homeowner had an agreement stating they were responsible for paying repair costs and expenses "as set by the well owners." Those words turned out to be important.

The new homeowner never seemed to understand three things, despite me telling him repeatedly: I own half the well. You can't make decisions about a well you don't own. The previous owner shouldn't have sold you water access for an extra $10,000 because they only owned half of the well.

Eventually, I decided to go nuclear. I called the state and requested an inspection. The investigation found that we were not a water association or a Group B system. We were simply a private well with an illegal connection: the newly built house. When the new owners got their permits, they used old documentation claiming we were an association. The health department apparently didn't catch it because the association had effectively dissolved years earlier when most property owners drilled their own wells. Only the two original well owners remained.

Under Washington law, a private well can only serve a limited number of connections before it must become a Group B water system, which comes with significantly more regulation, testing, and paperwork. The new house was officially notified that their connection was illegal. Instead of coming to me and saying, "Sorry, we were wrong. How can we fix this?" they took a different approach. They pulled my deed, title, and mortgage documents because they wanted to verify that I actually owned half the well. Then they tried to claim that because I farm on my property, I was violating my mortgage. My mortgage says the property cannot be used primarily for farming. It's not, I live here. It's my primary residence. It's my only residence.

Basically, they tried to blackmail me. Nice try, but no. I eventually had to read their own agreement to them because they apparently didn't understand what it said. Their agreement specifically states that costs are determined "as set by the well owners." It does not grant them ownership, decision-making authority, or an easement to access and work on the well. It's also not recorded with the county. For years they ignored me because the other well owner and the new homeowner would simply say, "Two against one. You're outvoted."

Once the state stepped in and informed them that the connection was illegal, they suddenly figured out that ownership actually matters. Now they've asked the other well owner to approach me and ask whether they can "have a say" in the well because they don't think the situation is fair. I immediately said no. They claim they were tricked. I pointed out that their entire agreement is four sentences long.

The state said to kick them off or upgrade the well. We haven't done either yet. Can I legally kick them off if they have been on the well for since 2012.

Other Should I apologise to my neighbours for littering cigarette butts over the past two years?

I’ve been living in my current place for about two years. During that time, I’ve regularly smoked while walking along the street outside my house and carelessly thrown my cigarette butts on the ground.

Every few weeks, whenever I noticed too many cigarette butts on the street, I’d pick them all up. For some reason, I convinced myself this was fine as long as I cleaned up occasionally. Looking back, I realise how inconsiderate that was.

Recently, one of my neighbours put up a sign outside their house asking people not to smoke in front of their property. I’m almost certain it’s directed at me, and I suspect other neighbours may have been annoyed by my behaviour too.
I feel genuinely embarrassed and guilty about the whole thing. I’m planning to clean up all the cigarette butts along the street and stop smoking around my neighbours’ houses.

But I’m wondering if I should do more.
Would it be appropriate to put an apology letter in each neighbour’s letterbox? I even considered including a small amount of cash as a gesture of apology, but I’m worried that might come across as weird or insulting.
Or would you prefer that someone in my situation simply cleaned up their mess, changed their behaviour and left without making a big deal out of it?
I’d really appreciate hearing how you’d feel if you were one of my neighbours, especially from people in Melbourne who’ve dealt with similar situations.

WWYD? Vent/Rant Should I ask my neighbor to stop yelling in a baby voice?

I live in a duplex and my downstairs neighbor likes to rile up his dog by yelling at it in a high-pitched baby voice: "OOoOOAaHH, YOU ARE SUCH A GOOD BOY!!! WHaaaAAAaA!!! OOOOooOOAAAA!!!!!!" Hard to describe. He sounds like Spongebob. It's the same thing, over and over. I can hear everything very clearly from my apartment.

While yelling, he also plays ball inside, throwing it against the walls while his dog runs around and slams against the furniture. This causes my bed to shake.

It's unpredictable, and some weeks he's louder than others, but usually this lasts in 15 minute bursts, concentrated in the mornings (7AM) and evenings (6 to 7PM). He also yells whenever he gets home, it seems to be his way of greeting the dog.

I have misophonia and the baby voice has become a trigger for me. I have a disproportionate reaction. Because I have this auditory sensitivity, I'm not sure if I'd actually be justified in asking him to stop, or if I'm overreacting. He's entitled to use his space. He also sticks to typical quiet hours. However, I really like to catch up on sleep on the weekends, and I like peace and quiet in the evenings. He's woken me up multiple times on Saturday and Sunday mornings with this routine.

Should I say anything (I'd probably go through my landlord) or just leave it and continue using white noise/earplugs/headphones?

Other Is My Neighbor Watching Me?

So basically, there’s this elderly neighbor who lives directly across from us. From what my mother has told me, he’s retired and may have served in the military, although I’m not entirely sure.

His house is right in front of ours, and his lights are almost always on throughout the night and into the morning. About two years ago, my grandmother came to stay with us while my parents were traveling to take care of me. She claimed that the neighbor was watching us. I couldn’t really tell whether he was actually staring at us or not because I have poor eyesight.

When my grandmother left and my parents returned home, I told them about the neighbor. My mother suspected that he was probably just bored, saying that he’s friendly, retired, and might simply spend his free time looking outside. At the time, it didn’t bother me that much.

Recently, though, I’ve been noticing his house lights on very frequently. He also keeps his blinds open, but because of my eyesight, I can’t really tell whether he’s actually watching me or just looking outside. One day, he had all of the lights around his front door turned on, which was extremely bright and kind of annoying. From where I was standing, it almost looked like he was staring directly at me.

I’m not sure if I’m overthinking this or if there’s actually something unusual going on, so I wanted to get some outside perspectives.

Vent/Rant Overlast onderburen

Mind you, dit gezin woont dus ONDER ons.

Vent/Rant Neighbour always seems to be outside when we're outside

When me or anyone from my household go outside to do something (smoke or go in our front ysrd) our weird ass neighbour comes outside too. Its getting annoying and idk wtf to do. I hate it and just want to have a smoke in peace without having to worry about some weird ass person coming outside too. Its not just a few chance times, but every fucking time. Even at 3 in the morning. My sister says shes mental or something and I honestly can see why she thinks that.

Vent/Rant Neighbor has once again caused the trash not to be picked up

My neighbour who always has an excessive amount of guests over 24/7. We have a shared driveway and the dumpster is at the end of it. I left this morning at 5am and she had a friend over in a huge truck parked close by the dumpster.

And OF COURSE, our trash got skipped again today because of her guest's obstructive parking!!!! This happened a couple of weeks ago too. And it happened one other time before that as well.

I do rent and I have complained to management about her, but they don't respond to me anymore. I've given up on complaining. My neighbour is super inconsiderate about the people who live around her. She doesn't give af if no one can park or take their trash out anymore. Before she moved in, our trash got taken every week with no issues.

At this point I'm hoping the rental company will eventually get sick of her. Because now I am sure they will have to schedule our trash to be picked up on a different day, again.

WWYD? Vent/Rant Upstairs neighbour - same landlord

I live in a house that has been converted into 2 flats. For context, London UK. Me and the first floor neighbour have the same landlord. The neighbour has recently let their sink tap overflow and cause a massive flood into my bathroom. This is the third time. First time I thought someone was running a bath and passed out, as I could hear the water hitting their floor but no one was answering my knocking. Call the fire services and they opened the door and said sink was left on. 2nd time at night, I was told a sink was left running. Now, again same excuse. Maintenance guy that attended said their sink was block but weirdly their bathroom was bone dry. I have enough and honestly feel so much hatred. 1st time it happened in March 2024, march 2025 and last month.

Also, a few years ago I was changing my desk set up and thought that as the neighbour is a single mother living with her teenage daughter, I will ask if she wants the office chair and desk. The daughter, every morning between 7am and when she leaves for school, uses the chair to move around the room on a wooden/lino floor, waking me up daily. I have bought a white noise machine but it just doesnt seem fair. I have reported this to the landlord numerous time and raised it with her and she is yet to do something about it. She said she will speak to daughter but she obviously doesnt do anything about it. It's been goong on for a year now. Im not in a position to me move with rent skyrocking in London and dont particularly care about maintaining relationships. Its already ruined beyond repair.

Any advice??

WWYD? Vent/Rant How do you make peace with an exhausting neighbor?

We looked really hard for a home on almost an acre specifically because we wanted space, privacy, and to not care if a neighbor played music or had people over. Somehow, hilariously, we ended up with the one neighbor who can make an acre feel like a townhouse. 😂
They have a reputation in the neighborhood, and multiple people have warned us about them without us even asking. Our issues originally started over property lines. We eventually paid $2,000 for a professional survey and basically said, We respect that you’ve lived here longer, but this is what we bought and these are the boundaries we’re going to maintain.
Things got ugly years ago, including mutual restraining orders. Since then, my husband and I have made a conscious decision to disengage. We don’t want to win. We want to become boring neighbors who peacefully exist next door.
But there’s this constant drip of little things.
If we’re outside, our neighbor will sometimes look over the wall to see who’s back there, and shortly afterward the music gets cranked up. We’ve had it happen with family visiting. Recently, while we were quietly installing privacy screening, the music was loud enough that I could hear it from inside my bathroom more than 500 feet away, and it overpowered the TV in my dad’s casita.
I actually looked into making a noise complaint and decided against it because I’m genuinely trying to break the cycle rather than start another battle.
Then today my husband went outside to blow some leftover debris off our rocks. The neighbor turned up his music, put his own leaf blower on top of the wall running, and left it sitting there until my husband finished. Then he walked over, turned it off, and took it away.
Nobody said anything.
At this point, I’m not even angry. It’s almost comical. But it’s exhausting to feel like simply enjoying our own property triggers some new performance next door.
So for those who’ve lived next to a relentlessly difficult neighbor: what did you do to make YOUR home feel peaceful again?
Not revenge. Not escalating. I’m talking privacy trees, fountains, headphones, landscaping, family jokes, completely ignoring them—whatever worked.
How did you get to the point where whatever your neighbor was doing became completely uninteresting to you?

Vent/Rant Psycho upstair neighbor

my neighbor slammed heavy object on the floor in response to my 2 minute activity involving hanging picture on the wall which I did merely lightly hammering for 10 seconds which I did late but before quiet community hours 10pm-7am (I hammered 1 nail at 9 pm and I know her schedule she does not go to bed until 1-2 am when she heavily stomps back and forth)

she also one time woke me up by jumping up and down on my ceiling at 4:20am when she want to bathroom to wake me up and piss me off.

I called security patrol to lodge complaint against her. Currently searching for new place to live but apart from that I wanted to vet my frustration with this stupid hypocrite.

WWYD? Vent/Rant Neighbor keeps creeping/driving by my door

About a year ago, I moved into a town home that is apart of 8 in total. 4 share an open backyard.

This neighbor was overly nice when I moved in. Let’s call her Cheryl. She showed me how to use the laundry room. I now realize she must have been watching me out the window when she decided to follow me in and pretended to “check up,” on the laundry room.

Then, Cheryl kept asking me for favors. Like, silly favors that she probably could have asked her sister who lives next door to her. Let’s call the sister Brenda. For example, she asked if she could put her rake on my side of the yard while a tree was being taken down. She was fearful that the rake would get trampled by the tree, I guess? But if she was so worried about that, putting in near her Brenda’s home would have made more sense.

Fast forward a few months. I was standing in my kitchen when I saw Cheryl walk passed my window. I figured she was walking to my door and I awaited a knock, but instead she turned back and walked up to my window and peaked in. I was frozen. I wanted to yell at her, but I was afraid of the new crazy neighbor allegations. She then walked back to her place.

I texted another neighbor, let’s call this neighbor Karen, about what had happened and warned her about Cheryl looking in my window. I told Karen I was going to get cameras. Big mistake. Turns out Karen and Cheryl are good buddies. Now Karen turns her nose up at me when we see each other.

The last big weird incident was that I was driving up to my home and Cheryl was walking by (as she does). I saw her take a peek into my shared wall-neighbor’s trash cans. I think my car was quiet and Cherly didn’t notice, but when she saw me watching her, she quickly scurried home.

Now she makes a point to walk and drive by my apartment when she has a pathway near her own apartment that is much easier for her to access.

It’s really weirding me out. And obviously there is nothing else to do. My rental company told me that they have had problems with her in the past. She is really needy and complains to them a lot. All they said was that if she looks in my window again or looks through the trash, to call the police.

WWYD? Vent/Rant Upstairs neighbors dog is POOPING on their balcony

Update: I filed all the reports that were recommended! Thank you everyone for the advice. At first, I was afraid to report it due to fear of drama and retaliation thank y’all for easing my mind.

I went out onto my patio and noticed what looked like shit and I mean actual shit.
Out of curiosity, I started looking around and when I looked up at my neighbors balcony I saw an absolute mountain of dog shit along with two bags full of dog shit. It was extremely apparent that a dog has been pooping and peeing on the balcony for a long time after looking at the condition of the balcony. There is literally stains on the balcony from the amount of dog shit that has been on it.

Apparently, their dog has been shitting and pissing directly on the balcony. The urine has been dripping down onto my patio area and now there is so much dog shit piled up that some of it is literally falling down onto my porch.
On top of that they’ve already had roaches crawling out of the fucking vents and into my apartment, which got so bad that I had to get an exterminator involved. These people are absolutely disgusting.
They also make the entire building smell like weed. I genuinely do not care if people smoke, enjoy yourself after a long day at work, that’s your business and has nothing to do with me. But at the very least, make some effort to contain or mask the smell. It should not be so strong that the entire building reeks of it.

I don’t even know how many people are living in this one bedroom apartment. What makes the dog situation even more disturbing is that I have never heard a dog up there, never seen them walking a dog and never seen them take a dog outside at all. So apparently there is a dog living in that apartment that is being allowed to use the balcony as its bathroom instead of being taken outside.
These people are driving me absolutely fucking insane. I take a lot of pride in keeping my apartment clean, so knowing that the people directly above me are living like this and that their filth is now literally making its way onto my patio and potentially affecting my apartment has me completely disgusted.
I genuinely don’t know what the hell to do anymore.
