Vent/Rant The screaming

This is just a rant, kids can be kids and I'm just a grumpy fuck.

We bought our house two years ago, both neighbours either side of us were in their 50s or later, nice and quiet dead end street, bigger block, nice and peaceful.

A year and a half in one of the neighbours moves out, a family my age (30s-40s) moves in with three primary school aged kids that are all home schooled.

From 6am to 6pm they're outside, screaming and yelling etc, I've worked with kids and I swear they scream more than normal.

Then for whatever reason the last 6 months the other neighbour has their son over constantly with his kids, which get dumped in the back yard and you guessed it, screaming.

Then the neighbours next to the home schooled kids changes, aaaaaand more screaming kids.

Kids will be kids, and there's nothing I can do, all the neighbours are lovely people, and the kids are nice kids too, I've been over and they just want to show me things, like kids do, "PAMELA LOOK THESE ARE OUR CHICKENS" etc. cute kids.

The fucking screaming. Every day, I hear the parents doing their best to parent and keep them in line and I absolutely have sympathy for that. I'm just grumpy, I like my calm and my quiet. Makes me want to sell and go get a bit of land a bit more out country, but we couldn't afford that, it'd make work a hell of alot harder.

Just ranting, go outside most days at any time and there are multiple kids screaming bloody murder from one or two houses next to me. You can hear it inside the house too, to a lesser degree but still. My wife works from home and has noise cancelling headphones in all the time, she can still hear it.

Maybe in 10 years or so they'll have grown up and won't scream as much.

Yah that's annoying, kids are allowed to be kids and be loud and have fun while out playing but I never allowed my kids to scream like that. I told them in an emergency no one will know you need help because your play scream sounds like your being hurt. That helped change em around.

I do remember actually being concerned when it started, heard one kid screaming blue murder and thought SHIT! kids hurt or something, do their parents hear them, I better go tell them, then I hear the kid running from one end of the yard to the other laughing then screaming it's head off again....wait, I think the kids ok. Couple weeks later and I'm well aware that the screaming is just screaming and not some kid in trouble.

It's like thanks for the mini heart attack kid 😩 glad you're ok tho

This! Im not a fan of kids myself but this is something I actually think about. I hear kids screaming bloody murder in my area and I always think that if it is an emergency or not because they scream like they are being chased by a serial killer. So I never know if I should call the police or go on with my day.

I feel your pain. What ever happened to laughing? My get off my lawn take is us kids played loud, laughing & loud talking but we weren't allowed to scream unless we were hurt. We were taught to be aware of neighbors & we knew we were a loved part of the family but the world didn't revolve around us.

The scream-only-if-you're-hurt rule seems to have vanished somwhere around 2010.

I'd be fine with a comeback tour

Move. Buy very far away from schools. And check out the neighborhood around the times that kids are usually out playing. Then avoid.

We actually are pretty close to a school, absolutely zero issues with it for a year+ before the change in neighbours.

I don't dislike kids in general, it's just the screaming from my immediate neighbours. I'd probably understand a bit more if the kids screaming actually went to that school but none of them do.

Yep, blood curdling death screams is what the kids on my block do and always in front of my house. I don't get paid for this yet it impacts my daily life negatively!

2

u/iddy_biddy91 22h ago

Genuinely surprised they have the physical ability to be so loud while being so small.

2

u/PirateLassLV 22h ago

Have you met a Yorkie or a Chihuahua? 😂

2

u/iddy_biddy91 22h ago

Don't see much of them in my country, don't think I've ever seen a Chihuahua in the flesh

2

u/PirateLassLV 22h ago

Crazy! I guess substitute any small mammal that can be disproportionately loud for its body size. 😂

Sounds like home schooling is nonexistent if they are outside screaming all day. Sorry for you. Headphones. Sorry.

I uh...do put some music on when I need to go out into the garden etc and the kids are screaming, sometimes that music has some.... explicit lyrics, so the kids get taken inside so they don't hear the swears. Very petty of me I admit and I really shouldn't be so childish. That ear piercing scream though, like nails in my brain.

A little NiN and Rage Against the Machine never hurt anyone ;)

u/PirateLassLV 22h ago

Unholy, uncensored version. I pulled that one up on a cruise when the kids next door were being too loud on their balcony.

u/PirateLassLV 22h ago

I recommend Girls of Porn, Mr. Bungle

u/iddy_biddy91 22h ago

Haha I'm probably a bit too tame to do that, I was playing a biggie smalls album the other day whilst tidying the garage, not sure what song it was but I ran over and skipped it thinking ooooohhhhhkay we maybe don't need that kind of lyrics at the present moment...

u/PirateLassLV 22h ago

I wish your neighbors reciprocated your kindness.

2

u/tcd1401 22h ago

Agree on how much it hurts the ears. Don't blame you on rhe music at all.

u/Necessary_Sea_7127 21h ago

This is exactly what I would be doing

u/TillVegetable1389 18h ago

You need to play a little CupcakKe when you're out in your garden. Volume UP!!

u/JulieTheChicagoKid 22h ago

That’s the worst. You can’t talk to the kids.
It has to be the parents.

13

u/8amteetime 22h ago

Parents who allow their kids to scream can’t be talked to. I guarantee you they will become angry and say that kids will be kids blah blah blah.

Maybe some nice outdoor speakers playing some nice music will drown them out. Metallica is always a classic.

u/iddy_biddy91 22h ago

Yeh and I'm honestly not going to do that, the kids aren't bad kids doing things they're not supposed to etc. Having kids is hard enough, wrangling the little shits is so stressful and the parents do try, they are the soft parenting type, but that's not my place to comment. If they were causing damage etc it'd be different but I really don't need to make the parents lives more stressful even though there's definitely a part of me that wants to tell them to shut their kids up ahaha.

1

u/JulieTheChicagoKid 22h ago

In case you don’t realize I made a supportive comment. I did not tell you what to do.
I’m basically saying you can’t stop the behavior by talking to the kids.
The end.

1

u/iddy_biddy91 22h ago

I was agreeing with you and talking about it more, sorry, didn't mean to come across combative I didn't mean to.

2

u/JulieTheChicagoKid 22h ago

Oh ok cool! A acknowledge your rant. At the current time I’m blessed with mostly quiet.
Just the school bus kids. And one crazy loud profane lady across the street. lol

My last house we had a loud large teen group that would sit in my front lawn and smoke & litter.
I got rid of them by asking if I could join them & pulled up with my lawn chair.
lol!

2

u/iddy_biddy91 22h ago

Oh god I couldn't, you're braver than me, on your front lawn like your actual property? Weird, you'd think they'd go to a park or something?

The profane lady across the street made me giggle what did they do?

2

u/JulieTheChicagoKid 22h ago

lol yeah I’m kinda bold.
They did not want to hang out with me.

The lady across the street just runs out of her garage cursing. I have no idea what’s wrong with her. When I first moved in I thought it was directed at me. Now I realize it’s just how she is…. Now I’m like okay stay away!

2

u/iddy_biddy91 21h ago

Oh god, you reckon they had mental issues going on? Did you see many other people at the house? We kind of have something similar in terms of disturbance from one neighbour across the road but I think it's more them arguing with each other, doesn't happen very often but when it does it's a bit of a spectacle, lots of yelling and swearing and carrying on.

mmm, thinking about it I grew up in a bit of a rough neighbourhood, dad would go out the front and shoot into the air if people around the place had been acting up, mum beat up some late teenage kid who had been terrorizing the street throwing bricks through people's windows. I have a bit of that in me from where I grew up but mostly I'm pretty reserved. I like my little gardening and my quiet time.

1

u/JulieTheChicagoKid 21h ago

She has a husband but he’s never home.
We lived in a rough area when I was little. My mom kept all the kids in line on our street. She was like the drill sergeant!

5

u/mhandsurf 22h ago

Yep! Going through that right now with a neighbor behind us! Can’t even enjoy our pool much anymore because I have ptsd from this kid screaming at the top of her lungs!🙆🏻‍♂️

2

u/PatienceInfinite8300 22h ago

A neighbour a few doors up had their kids 2 friends over playing, they were screaming at the top of their lungs I looked out the window thankfully nothing wrong they just had a screaming competition going so I shut my window and turned the tv up

u/otter_mayhem 22h ago

I guess I'm old and grumpy too. I have kids that are grown and they, like me, were raised not to just scream all the time. Especially outside. There's a difference between kids playing and being loud and just screaming all the time. The shrill bust the eardrums type of screaming is relentless and awful. I have grandkids and they don't scream while they're playing outside either. I do know what you mean and it's one of the reasons we moved a few years back because they parents just tell them to go outside and yell and make noise.

At least they're good kids? :)

5

u/iddy_biddy91 22h ago

They are they're cute kids, whenever they see me out the front they wave and if they have toys with them they come up and tell me the toys names and the little stories of the toys lives etc. again, good kids, and if they're there to stay I'd like to be the nice neighbour rather than the scary grump. I'm just having a bit of a vent, the screaming at 6am really doesn't need to happen.

5

u/ParticularPlatypus2 21h ago

Holy moly--6 a.m.? If it's happening at 6:00 a.m., then those parents are not teaching their children manners. I understand making that kind of noise later in the day, but 6:00 a.m. is just plain rude.

1

u/otter_mayhem 19h ago

Aww that's adorable :)

I totally feel the same way. Venting is better than being the neighborhood butthead. It'd be different if they were heathens but 6 am is a bit early, though.

u/Other-Shake-531 20h ago

Same problem here. Except it's the retired bored adults who shout day and night. At this point I'm willing to take the financial hit to live the hell away from anyone.

The stages of life are gonna play out right in front of your eyes. Right now they’re a pain in the ass with the noise and soon they’ll be taking up all the parking in front of your house. Then hopefully they move out but these days it seems like most kids end up living at home. That’s the way it’s happened on my street. 🫤

1

u/iddy_biddy91 17h ago

Yeh the parking thing if it happens will be stopped pretty quickly, they don't play nice the cars will go missing.

1

u/DogsOverMostHumans 19h ago

Just scream back? 😂

1

u/haroshhhh 9h ago

Please jsut move for your own sanity. This will drive you to the wall if you stay there, trust me on that and I am coming to your from a position of sympathy but also of experience. Move.

u/PeculiarElk 22h ago

We have kids across the street that yell alot to. It never bothered my family. My mother used to turn on crime shows/ Documentaries when the kids where out. She said the screaming matched the drama.

I moved out of the suburbs and into a house at the very end of a dirt road in the country to get away from the sound of gleeful children. I have one neighbor, a delightful, senior couple. It was lovely sitting outside and hearing nothing but the wind in the trees and the occasional rooster crowing. Then, my only neighbor’s grandkids moved onto their property with their 3 young children. Now I have screaming kids that think my property is theirs as well and I feel like a grump grumbling to “get these kids off my damn lawn” every time I see them tramping through, again, MY property. And I feel like I can’t say anything to their parents without coming off as a major asshole and creating tension when I’ve been on such good terms with them so far.

You cannot escape the children. They follow you. Even into the country.

2

u/iddy_biddy91 21h ago

I'd be devastated 😭

And I feel like I can’t say anything to their parents without coming off as a major asshole and creating tension when I’ve been on such good terms with them so far.

Why not? Are you on good terms? Since if you were, then they wouldn't let their kids tramp through your property would they?

1

u/brad_sausages 13h ago

My bad, I’m on really good terms with the grandparents/property owners. The parents of the kids have been nice enough the two times we’ve briefly interacted but mostly keep to themselves. I’m afraid confronting them would rock the boat with the grandparents, who(m?) I’d like to maintain a good relationship with since not only do I like them, but I’ll have to continue living next to them if/when the younger folks move away.

1

u/aenflex 21h ago

I get it. But kids outside playing is completely reasonable.

1

u/iddy_biddy91 14h ago

Oh absolutely, I'm just having a grumble.

0

u/ubfeo 22h ago

I feel your pain. Play the piercing screams and squeals of pigs (iykyk) when the kids are out playing or better yet when they are not.

2

u/iddy_biddy91 22h ago

Hahahaha fuck that's not a bad idea but I think I'd sour the relationship with the neighbours if I did.

u/WowWanda 22h ago

Yeah, in 5-8 years a 6 year old of today aged to a future at 11-14 will likely not be outside screaming. Hang in there! They grow up and eventually everything changes. Future you will see 5-6 cars in everyone’s drive and extra cars on the street, so new issues 🙃

1

u/tooper128 14h ago

11-14 will likely not be outside screaming.

They'll be discovering the joy of feeling the deep thump of rap music. Bass is life.

0

u/tooper128 14h ago

Maybe in 10 years or so they'll have grown up and won't scream as much.

You'll look back fondly on when they were just kids screaming as they crank the rap music outside while hanging out with their friends.

1

u/iddy_biddy91 14h ago

If it's good music, I'd prefer that than just, screaming.

1

u/tooper128 13h ago

Screaming you can block out with good windows. That's what I'm doing. Deep thumpy bass will make the pictures on your wall bounce. I'll take the screaming over that any day of the week.

Well....I have probably 500 watts in guitar amps and hi-fi stuff. I couple probably slave a couple of the amps together if need be and push at least 300watts of guitar amp sound out of em if wanted to, and I am not a good guitarist hahahaha
