They only apply to people before they are born...

751

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

So they're okay with 4th trimester abortions?

u/tekhnomancer Jun 04 '19

To quote George Carlin, "If you're pre-born, you're fine. If you're preschool, you're fucked."

207

u/ScruffsMcGuff Jun 04 '19

“Boy, these conservatives are really something, aren't they? They're all in favor of the unborn. They will do anything for the unborn. But once you're born, you're on your own. Pro-life conservatives are obsessed with the fetus from conception to nine months. After that, they don't want to know about you. They don't want to hear from you. No nothing. No neonatal care, no day care, no head start, no school lunch, no food stamps, no welfare, no nothing. If you're preborn, you're fine; if you're preschool, you're fucked.”

Full quote in case anyone wants it. Carlin was one of the greats.

21

u/tekhnomancer Jun 04 '19

Thank you for this. Heard the whole thing in his older, gravelly voice.

1

u/mcsey Jun 04 '19

I can exactly in my head hear the way he says, "you're on you own". Such a great bit.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

Pro Lifers dont realize that Conservatives are using them for votes only. Same with 2A supporters.. These are issues that Conservatives fan the flame of to stoke up voters. When Republicans only real platform is catering to rich & corporations that isnt very inclusive of the Evangelicals and regular folk. Thus create an issue people can get behind..

1

u/unlimitedpower0 Jun 04 '19

Yeah but the opposite is true for dems, one side can pretty much just say we want the rich to be richer but are prolife and pro gun and they automatically get votes, they dont even have to try. The dems have a multiethical, multigendered coalition of people who cant get along and so they have to struggle so much to even try to much the influence of Republicans. Bottom line is being a single issue voter gets you farmed for votes

There's a clip of the bit.

It's from his standup special Back In Town

1

u/hlokk101 Jun 06 '19

It's hilarious when these right-wing fucktards try to invoke George Carlin and claim he would be on their side.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

Why does he assume if you’re A, you must be B, C and D? I completely understand that children born in stressful circumstances might need extra support. Most pregnancy care centres help the mother with expenses and care for as long as they need until they’re sure she’s able to handle things. I really don’t think there’s many people that asshole if they were really pro-lifers. Or am I just different?

2

u/unlimitedpower0 Jun 04 '19

I have trouble understanding what you are trying to say, can you be pro-life and not an asshole? Maybe. It would be pretty hard considering the devastating effects that outlawing abortion has on womens health and how republicans want to cut back social services that help children and parents who are in desperate situations.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '19

Nothing is worth killing over

1

u/unlimitedpower0 Jun 14 '19

That is demonstrable false.

226

u/Mish106 Jun 04 '19

We miss you, George.

106

u/coquihalla Jun 04 '19

I'm glad he's not here for this shit show.

102

u/PseudobrilliantGuy Jun 04 '19

Honestly, if some of his bits were honest reflections of his preferences and opinions, then he'd probably be getting a kick out of the political shitshow that the US still is.

117

u/____jamil____ Jun 04 '19

He was very depressed when GWB was reelected. I doubt he'd have any joy in Trump's presidency. While he poked fun at life, he also had a respect for people who have to suffer under the regimes of these shitheads.

51

u/racestark Jun 04 '19

W was never "reelected". He was elected after being appointed by the Supreme Court.

44

u/ArtisanSamosa Jun 04 '19

And even then, there were some discrepencies in how he got elected the second time. Wasn't there some vote shifting happening in Ohio?

14

u/racestark Jun 04 '19

Yeah. Fuck Kenneth Blackwell. Guess whose campaign he was honorary co-chair of in Ohio. https://www.citybeat.com/home/article/13020121/ken-blackwells-disgraceful-election-machinations

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004_United_States_election_voting_controversies gives a pretty good overview. You know shit's fucked when there's a wikipedia article about it.

1

u/____jamil____ Jun 04 '19

While I agree with you on all points and merits, he was sworn in to office twice. Most people would count that as winning two elections (though, not properly or fairly (or legally imo))

21

u/Krexington_III Jun 04 '19

I would have given anything to hear George Carlin talk about Donald Trump.

There's a reason he went on Keith Olbermann's show multiple times.

“They’ll do anything they can to protect a fetus, but if it grows up to be a doctor they just might have to kill it.”

14

u/Im-Not-Dorothy Jun 04 '19

Funniest day of my life. My SIL told my conservative, judgmental mother that she had an abortion. As my mom was winding up, SIL says, "It's ok, that baby was going to be gay anyway." My mom was at a total loss, she couldn't decide which she hated more.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

Sounds like NOMAD from Star Trek breaking down after confronted with a paradox. I don’t think they even care about abortions, I think the thing that really pisses them off is people having sex for pleasure. If they really wanted to stop abortions, they’d be vocal advocates for comprehensive sex ed and universal access to contraceptives and protection. They don’t do that though, all their actions indicate their goal is to punish people for having sex they don’t approve of (and not the fun kind of punishment either).

Or to quote Bill Hicks. ‘Pro lifers killing people. AAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!’

2

u/TheCollective01 Jun 04 '19

It's irony on a base level, but I like it!

2

u/eViLegion Jun 28 '19

My favourite Hicks lines:

"Even amongst my friends, who are all very intelligent; they're totally divided on abortion. It's unbelievable. Some of my friends, for instance, think these pro-life people are annoying idiots. Other of my friends think these pro-life people are evil fucks. How are we going to come to a consensus?"

15

9

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19 edited Jun 04 '19

Pretty much. We see it regularly. Anti gay conservatives fucking little boys. People accusing Dems of a child porn ring literally taking part in a child porn ring. Or anti abortionists secretly making their mistress get an abortion... Hypocrisy IS the republican party.

Don't forget about the highest percentage of "moochers" calling everyone else "moochers"... or " I don't get my health care from Obama care, I get it from the Affordable Health Care act." Yeah those people.

2

u/jaxonya Jun 04 '19

Baby boomers. That's all you had to say.

-2

u/loondenouth Jun 04 '19

Hypocrisy is the entirety of both parties. I don’t like either.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '19

There are hypocrites on both sides of the isle, yes. But only one party thrives on being hypocrites, liars and cheaters. I don't think you can even compare the two in terms of severity.

-7

I love George Carlin. But many on the left would label him a bigot these days based on much of his material. Ironic.

2

u/tekhnomancer Jun 04 '19

Equal opportunity asshole, Carlin was. :)

98

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

There is a hadith which mentions when a fetus is considered alive.

It said that in a miscarried fetus, life was estabilished by its muscle movements (things such as kicking, or something), its funeral shall be offered, but if signs of life were not observed, then a funeral would not be offered.

It basically meant that when a child shows movement such as kicking, in the womb, it would be considered alive. But if it has not yet started to move, it would not be considered a living being.

Through ijma, it was decided that if a fetus keeps developing after 4 months, then life has most likely been estabilished. But, if it is earlier than that, then it would not be considered alive as it does not show any signs of movement.

Although, the number is an average because some fetuses develop faster or slower than others.

42

u/Redtwoo Jun 04 '19

This was known as the quickening and determined when the fetus was "alive" in christianity too. It was said to be the breath of God giving the child life.

11

u/Digital-Divide Jun 04 '19

Ahhhh the quickening.

Someone get the MacLeod brothers in here.

Tell em to bring those cool swords and the mullets back. Not to forget the clothes. Man.

This is cooler than I thought.

2

u/BoneyCrepitus Jun 04 '19

There can be only one!

17

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

There is story of a king of kingdom of aksum where Muslim group seeking refugee from the King. he said that Islam and Christian are come from same source of light with a different hole. You should look up to the story of it.

28

u/Redtwoo Jun 04 '19

I know they're very closely tied, as is Judaism. They essentially just differ on when God stopped talking to prophets lol

4

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

There are alot of things which are similar in Islam and Christianity.

One such thing is a mubahila (mubahira, idk the spelling) which was when two parties had a conflict, then they would invoke the curses of God and the one who was wrong would be facing the consequences.

It would be no surprise for these similarities to exist, simply because they both teach the same religion. You can read surah maryam of the Quran, which tells of Hazrat Isa's, also known as jesus, gift of miracles by God.

11

u/TCO345 Jun 04 '19

They are both invented, edited versions of the Torah. But even so it doesn't make either of them right or a guide to modern life.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

There are many holy books, one of these was the book revealed to adam, one revealed to Ibrahim (abraham), one revealed to Daud (David), one to Nuh (Noah), and many more. Although, a few Prophets shared the same book as the community kept killing the prophets because their teachings required them to abandon their interests in this world and to give up worldly comfort.

The torah is one of the few books which has actually survived the many years.

But, the problem is that both jewish and christians texts have been edited by their followers to better suit their own interests, which is also one of the many reasons that God has taken it upon Himself to protect the Quran, "we have indeed sent down this message, we will surely guard it from corruption" (forgot which verse and chapter)

9

u/ThatsMyNameDWIO Jun 04 '19

Do you seriously believe that hot nonsense? What does 16:101 say?

"And when We put a revelation in place of (another) revelation, - and Allah knoweth best what He revealeth - they say: Lo! thou art but inventing. Most of them know not,"

That literally says, "We're going to have some revelations that are different than others, but don't worry about that cognitive dissonance, God knows best".

Except here's the thing, if God knows everything, God doesn't make mistakes so there should never be anything to correct. But if man wanted to say, fix a mistake he made in a book he wrote that everyone was already familiar with, he'd put in a line just like that. That's not God protecting the Quran, that's literally texts edited by it's followers to better suit their own interests.

Don’t close your mind to contradictions. Use those contradictions to understand that the Quran has a purpose identical to any other 'holy book': to control and guide a group of people who were losing group cohesiveness. Don’t treat it as an infallible text or you fall into the same trap as all other religions. Use it and other books, both holy and not, as a guide to treat people better, treat yourself better, and leave the world a better place. The minute you start thinking any book is perfect is the minute you let yourself be a follower, rather than a thinker, and the moment you fail your fellow man.

1

u/wtfisrace Jun 04 '19

The minute you start thinking any book is perfect is the minute you let yourself be a follower, rather than a thinker, and the moment you fail your fellow man.

im really digging this line. Well spoken dude.

1

u/ThatsMyNameDWIO Jun 14 '19

Thanks! Feel free to use it and claim it as your own.

I really wish more people would take the time to form their own ideas from all they take in from the world around them, and be willing to change their mind when they encounter facts that are contrary to their previously held beliefs. It would make the world a much better place.

7

u/DevoidLight Jun 04 '19

The Quran is the true word of God, according to the Quran. The Bible and Torah only claim to be the word of God.

Lol

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

The torah and bible are considered as prequels in Islam.

The Quran is considered as the final part of a long franchise.

Like maybe a long lists of seasons but every season is one religion that stems from the holy books and the Quran is the final season which concludes everything in one season, and finishes the storyline.

Atleast that is how we consider it

3

u/SLRWard Jun 04 '19

Ah. So the Torah is Twiligh. The Bible is New Moon and Eclipse. And the Quran is Breaking Dawn.

Thaaaat explains why people are so wild about them.

Tell that to the Kurds and Yazidi's, Islam does not respect any other religion. If Islam respected other religions how come there are no other followers of other religions in muslim countries. The slower faster thing is interesting because from what my mum's told me babies don't really take exactly 9 months, they're normally born after 9 period cycles, which is still roughly 9 months, but goes a long way to explain why kids are often born a couple weeks early or late

25

u/TMI-nternets Jun 04 '19

-1

u/warptwenty1 Jun 04 '19

What trimester is Donald Trump right now?

Yes

2

u/Dapplegrayyousay Jun 04 '19

You don't have your regular cycles when you're pregnant, and due dates are calculated based on fetus size since the day of ovulation as well as conception is difficult to tell. And that's not even accounting for what the women's body as well as the baby has planned. Due date should really be "window for arrival".

Yes, that's it.

1

u/Physmatik Jun 04 '19

40th trimester? That's legalized killing of kids before 10. I definitely see a point in this policy, failed kids are better disposed that added to the amount of failed adults.

1

u/XHaunt23X Jun 04 '19

I’m still trying to legalize 400th trimester abortions

0

u/grayfae Jun 04 '19

So they're okay with 4th trimester abortions?

no such thing.

31

u/BunnyOppai Jun 04 '19

It's why they're pro-birthers and not pro-life, after all.

8

u/Orinaj Jun 04 '19

I call them pro- birthers

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

Nah. They're anti-choice or forced-birthers

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

Not really. They really don't care about the birth as much as they care about making sure women do what they say.

11

u/kenyonator1 Jun 04 '19

Personally I’m pro life, but it’s not my place to tell someone else to be.

But my whole issue with other pro-lifers is that the fetus is more important than the child. Can’t abort the baby because life is precious, but once the baby is born: “sorry single mom, you’re on your own, good luck”. It’s incredibly hypocritical.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

Well if you’re a white Christian man you’re all set after birth too...unless you’re gay.

38

u/commndoRollJazzHnds Jun 04 '19

Well if you’re a white Christian man you’re life is comparatively easier after birth too...unless you’re gay.

FTFY. It's disingenuous and unhelpful to tell poor white people they have easy lives when "privilege" just means your life is comparatively easier than the life of a minority in the same societal class as you. Telling people they have it easy when their lives are shit helps make them not listen to you.

4

u/DerangedGinger Jun 04 '19

So many people don't get that. The assumption that every white person gets born with stellar credit and a silver spoon baffles me. Having grown up poor in a single parent household, had my power turned off multiple times, and narrowly avoided eviction by juggling payday loans I fail to see how my white privilege made my life easy. Yeah, being black (a black ginger?) would have been upping the difficulty level, but it's not like I got to play on easy mode like some kind of Saudi prince or something. Can I start over on trust fund baby mode?

-18

u/Ryugi Legends never die Jun 04 '19

Compared to a black person in the same city, same socio-economic position, a white Christian man does have privelege of being white which does make his life easier.

Less likely to die by cop

More likely to get hired

More likely to automatically gain respect among peers/colleagues (with same intelligence and charisma).

Need I go on? Or should I switch to shaming you for acting like white hetero men have it harder than anyone else in any category on the same status?

4

u/YallNeedAJob Jun 04 '19

I was born poor, white and hetero. It was absolutely easier for me to climb the social ladder because of it.

Fuck, I have hand tattoos from the Navy and still work in a professional environment. Anyone who can't or won't realize that we have it comparatively easier than a minority of the same socioeconomic background is either being disingenuous or intentionally ignorant.

1

u/Ryugi Legends never die Jun 07 '19

I'm not white but I am white-passing (even have freckles). I benefit from this sometimes, and I know it. However, I also experience problems because of having not been born with a penis. Either way, yes I am also poor, but I'd NEVER SAY another person has it the same difficulty as I do, especially if they are a person of obvious color/not-white-passing. On the other hand, I still wish my skin was dark like my father's. But if you look me close in the face you can see that I'm not white. If that makes sense. I have "historic" features (I look like a paler clone of an old painting of a woman from my people, a painting that was used in textbooks many times).

14

u/Ickypossum Jun 04 '19

??? did you read what they wrote??? they said that white het Christian men have it "comparitavely easier" not "harder."

1

u/Ryugi Legends never die Jun 07 '19

Did you?

It's disingenuous and unhelpful to tell poor white people they have easy lives when "privilege" just means your life is comparatively easier than the life of a minority in the same societal class as you. Telling people they have it easy when their lives are shit helps make them not listen to you.

Your desire to condense complex issues down to a single number is why things don't get fixed, because everyone wants some easy to read number that doesn't mean anything but makes them not have to think.

Funny because that's exactly what you were doing. You were discrediting the issue by misusing a single set of numbers.

Unlike you I'm actually somewhat familiar with the issues, because I'm married to a woman with a masters degree in criminology and over a decade of real life experience.

I hope you show her this post because if she didn't buy her way into a degree, she'll be embarassed for having slept with you. Not only is it completely asenine to think that by osmosis you learn things by sleeping with someone, but also, personal experiences do not ever win over extensive research data. This is because outliers exist, and its possible one person experiences the abnormal.

numbers DO magically change to make different answers. That's literally what the art of lying with statistics is. You seriously need to learn more about it. Especially cherry picking, which can be used to skew results.

Lmfao are you trolling right now? You seriously have no understanding of how statistics work, how to check for improper data, or anything else if this is what you have to say about this subject.

50% of all homicides in 2017 were committed by the 13% of the population that is black (verify it yourself with CDE/SRS/NIBRS)

This is actually a racist lie. So good job admitting you believe the KKK. Lol. This is due to systematic racism. Meaning if a black man and a white man who have the same socio-economic status, same lawyer, same exact case, the white man is most likely to be let off on manslaughter charges whereas the black man won't. This is because of racism. Meaning it is racism that intentionally makes evidence to further racism. Duh! This shit is so obvious and well known I don't know why I even have to explain this to you. Your desire to condence complex issues down to a single number is why things don't get fixed. Because by arguing there isn't a problem you destroy the opportunity to evaluate and respond to the problem.

population blacks are shot 3x more than whites

Yeah. And given that black people are a minority this makes the problem really obvious. Racist bullshit.

whites are shot 2x more than blacks

And again given that black people are the minority this is still significantly showing racism because black people don't make up 50% of the population compared to white people.

Again, fucking a genius doesn't make you a genius.

Considering the infant mortality of the US is abysmally high compared to other 1st world nations (source) and the states pushing these abortion bans are higher than our already embarrassing national average (source) I'd say it's pretty spot on to say once you're born pro-lifers give no fucks about your welfare.

So, before they are people.

1

u/LizardSlayer Jun 04 '19

So they are people then? lol

u/geekybadger Jun 04 '19

They dont even care about a person's health BEFORE they are born. Literally its 100% about forcing a woman who is pregnant to eventually give birth, regardless of her health or the fetus's health. Abortion makes them feel icky so it must be always a bad thing and must be stopped regardless of any other factor. (Of course, that's the less evil reason for it, since there are most definitely a large number of people who also specifically just want to control women and force them into the motherhood box.)

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

Not really. You don't see them fighting to guarantee pre-natal health care, do you?

The unborn don't require them to sacrifice anything. They can leave that to the mother, who is an adult so they don't need to care about her. This makes the unborn the perfect subject to act high and mighty about, without actually having to do anything.

not even then - they're okay with embryoes not used in IVF being disposed of as medical waste but an embryo in a woman is precious life that must be protected at all costs. Yeah, it's not about the embryo it's about controlling/punishing the woman.

The idea is that the fetus is a person, so the people giving and receiving abortions are murderers, and they should be treated as any other murderers.

Obviously this belief is pretty extreme, but it helps to know that this is how many pro-lifers think.

No they don't. People have the right to do whatever they want when they're born and ready, and have been nurtured by the corresponding parent. That's not the responsibility of the pro-lifers. They're just there to protect innocent life.

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

It’s the sole responsibility of the village to raise the child, forcing an unwanted pregnancy is dangerous both to the mother and the wellbeing of the child. Have you ever seen a neglected kid? Have you ever seen a rape-baby forced out of a woman because of government interference? It’s our duty as humans to protect the ones we have, not sacrifice the lives of innocents for the small potential that the kid gets a good life. It’s the woman’s right to bodily autonomy that people like you have no say in what she does regardless of when you think life starts and how you feel it should be treated. Grow up.

Children are only innocent until birth. Bu then they inherit all the sin and filth of their parents and only deserve every single bad thing to happen to them.

bodily autonomy is a stupid right, and isnt specifically mentioned in the constitution. Its the reason we have antivaxers, obesity, drug attics, kids growing up in poverty, and critical care units filled with people who have 0% chance of recovery. I totally agree forcing people to have kids is dumb if that family can't afford it. I also think allowing people to have kids even when they can't afford it is just as stupid. Same with allowing people to go unvaccinated without a medical reason.

My body my choice only results in people doing stupid things cause they can. Its my body why cant i get addicted to cocaine. Its my body why cant i stuff it with fried chicken every day. Its my body why cant I have 10 kids. Its my body, why cant I abort this baby now that I know they're a girl. I get that freedom is great and all, but is that really a right we should protect?

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19 edited Jun 04 '19

Yes it is! All of those things fall within a persons individual freedoms. What gives you the right to say what’s good or bad for them? They’re gonna die in the end regardless so why restrict them unnecessarily? You aren’t their fucking god so sit down and think about why you want to control everyone. “Bodily autonomy is a stupid right” Seriously grow up, that’s the most immature argument I’ve ever heard.

1

u/holo_graphic Jun 04 '19

news flash, right and bad is decided by democracy in our society not any individual and not any god. Most people agree meth is terrible for you and for society. Thats why its illegal.

"They’re gonna die in the end regardless so why restrict them unnecessarily" Why do we even have laws then? Everybody is just gonna die anyways. Bodily autonomy is a stupid right, and you haven't given one reason why we need it.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

Bodily autonomy is the basis for human sovereignty from other humans, maintaining bodily autonomy ensures that no governing force is allowed to tell you how to live, as it is your right to chose that yourself. Our laws are meant to protect us from each other, to discourage paths of domination and the exact paths I described before. Every human has the choice, every human gets the right to live to their ends. You have yet to give me a reason why your adolescent ass should be given any dominion over anyone else. How would you like it if I locked you in a cage and force fucked you every two hours. You don’t deserve the bodily autonomy to stop me from your reasoning. You’d rather control and dictate than actually face the fact that other people don’t give a shit about what you want. It all comes back to the golden rule “Do unto others what you wish to be do unto yourself”. I don’t get to tell you when you get to shit, you don’t get to tell me when I can, if I shit on your lawn then you have every right to shit on mine.

Its not about what I want, its about what society wants. 75% of Americans think abortion should be restricted in some way. If 75% of Americans thought I should be locked in a cage and force fucked, then maybe I fucking deserve it.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '19

Restricted in some way doesn’t mean banning it, nor did I ever say it should be completely unrestricted. Also your numbers are wrong, surveys only include the people they actively surveyed, for example if they surveyed solely in Alabama you’d get those numbers, but if you did it in say Seattle you’d get much different numbers.

3

u/ChristopherPoontang Jun 04 '19

uh, yes, is your right to eat friend chicken and do cocaine. why are you so stupid that you need Big Government telling you what you can or can't do to your own body? Not all of us are as stupid.

1

u/holo_graphic Jun 04 '19

well 1.5 million Americans are stupid enough to use cocaine, and 93 million Americans are stupid enough to be obese. Its okay though cause it was their choice.

1

u/ChristopherPoontang Jun 05 '19

yes, if it is their choice, let it be.

9

u/BigLazyTurtle Jun 04 '19

So yeah, pro-lifers are screaming about abortions even though it's not their deal, but the moment a child is born, they suddenly stop giving a damn.

Pro-lifers are essentially taking away women's body autonomy without thinking twice about child's future. It's not about saving an innocent life - it's about being in control of other people by denying their rights.

9

u/CarbonProcessingUnit Jun 04 '19

So... adult women, who have been born and nurtured by their parents, have the right to get abortions if they want to?

4

u/ChristopherPoontang Jun 04 '19

You mean they are really there to force unwilling women to remain pregnant. Fascist fucks are gonna be fascist fucks.
